To stream a playlist through OBS, first build a playlist from local media files with OBS’s VLC Video source, then schedule the YouTube live event separately in YouTube Studio and connect OBS using the event’s stream URL and key. These are separate tasks: OBS does not automatically import and synchronize a playlist already hosted on YouTube. The documented workflow is the same for creators in India; channel eligibility still applies.
What “YouTube live playlist” means here
There are two different playlists that can be meant by this phrase:
- An OBS playback playlist: a list of media files on your computer that OBS plays into the live feed. For several files, OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlist playback.
- A YouTube playlist: videos already hosted on YouTube and arranged on your channel. The official OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a feature that automatically pulls that playlist into OBS and plays it as a live broadcast.
This guide covers the first option: sending local pre-recorded files through OBS to a scheduled YouTube live event. A YouTube playlist and a scheduled live event are also separate YouTube objects.
Check channel eligibility before setting up
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to go live. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help, so enable it before the date you plan to broadcast. The official workflow does not identify an India-only setup step.

Build a local media playlist in OBS
Install VLC and prepare your files
OBS’s Media Source can play an individual local media file. For a multi-file playlist, use the VLC Video source, which requires VLC to be installed. OBS documentation advises matching VLC’s architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Make sure the files you intend to use are available on the computer running OBS.
Add and configure the playlist
- In OBS, choose the scene that will carry the pre-recorded content.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video. If the source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Open the source’s properties and add the media files you want in the playlist.
- Choose the playback behavior: enable Loop to repeat the playlist, or Shuffle to vary its order, if those are the behaviors you want.
- Preview the scene and confirm the files play in the intended order and fit the stream layout.
Loop and shuffle control media playback in OBS. They do not schedule a YouTube event, start a broadcast, or create a recurring calendar schedule. For a single file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source can loop that file.

Schedule the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- On the Manage tab, choose to schedule a stream. You can create a new stream or reuse settings from a previous one.
- Set the event’s title, description, date and time, and privacy setting. Check the selected visibility before scheduling.
- After scheduling, locate the event in the Live Control Room and use its stream settings to connect the encoder.
A scheduled event may appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers may be able to select Notify me. Scheduling the event does not make OBS start sending video at the scheduled time; the encoder feed still needs to be started.
Connect OBS and send the feed
- In the scheduled event’s YouTube stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream details, or use the available account connection workflow if you prefer.
- Apply the settings, return to your scene, and check that the VLC Video source is playing and the preview looks right.
- Start streaming in OBS. Confirm in YouTube’s Live Control Room that the encoder feed is arriving and the event is ready before relying on the broadcast.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS with the replacement.

What can and cannot be automated
Studio scheduling
For a one-off broadcast, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and start the OBS encoder when you are ready. An event’s scheduled time and OBS’s playback settings are not the same control.
Programmatic YouTube broadcasts
If your goal is to create and manage broadcasts in software, the YouTube Live Streaming API provides broadcast and stream resources. Its documented recurring-broadcast pattern uses one liveStream resource bound to scheduled liveBroadcast resources. That is API-level event management; it does not by itself make OBS’s local media playlist follow a YouTube-hosted playlist.

External OBS control
For software control of OBS scenes and sources, OBS WebSocket is included in OBS Studio 28 and later. External tools can use it to control OBS, but this is separate from YouTube’s broadcast scheduling. Enable WebSocket authentication and protect its credentials; do not expose an unauthenticated control interface.

Copyright and other practical checks
- Confirm you have the rights needed to use every video and audio item in the playlist. A scheduled or automated broadcast does not grant permission to rebroadcast content.
- Test the entire intended sequence before relying on it: playback order, loop behavior, scene framing, audio, event settings and encoder connection.
- Keep in mind that this local OBS workflow depends on the computer and its connection being available while the encoder is sending. The cited setup documentation does not promise unattended uptime or automatic recovery from interruptions.
- A camera, capture card or other input is not required just to play local media files, though other production setups may need additional inputs or hardware.
