To automate a YouTube live playlist from an India-based VPS, run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the server, feed it your video files in a loop, and send its output to YouTube using the stream’s server URL and stream key. YouTube provides the live event and receives the feed; the encoder on your VPS—not the YouTube broadcast—controls which videos play and when the playlist repeats.
How the YouTube live setup works
YouTube separates the live event viewers watch from the incoming video feed. In the Live Streaming API, a liveBroadcast represents the event, while a liveStream represents the encoder’s incoming feed. A broadcast is bound to one stream, and a stream can be reused across broadcasts. Google documents a 24/7 feed sharing its stream with a separate interview broadcast. For a straightforward setup, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, then copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. The encoder reads and loops your playlist on the VPS, then sends the result to YouTube. YouTube’s event scheduling does not itself loop your source files.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel able to go live, and a stream or scheduled broadcast created in YouTube Studio.
- An India-region Linux VPS with SSH or root access, enough CPU and memory for your chosen encoding method, and outbound bandwidth that permits continuous streaming.
- Video files stored on the VPS, or a reliable way for the encoder to access them.
- An encoder such as FFmpeg, plus a process supervisor or service manager to restart it if it exits.
- A playlist plan: file order, whether to repeat the list, and how to handle a missing or damaged file.
VPS providers differ in location, resource limits, bandwidth allowances, overage charges, backup access and service terms. Verify the actual data-centre location and current plan details rather than relying on a country label or a provider’s uptime claim. Choose how YouTube receives the playlist
Use YouTube Studio for a single recurring feed
This is the simpler route if you are comfortable creating the event in Studio and only need to automate the video feed. YouTube’s encoder guide describes creating or scheduling a stream and entering the server URL and stream key in the encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Use the Live Streaming API when event setup must also be automated
An API-based workflow creates a broadcast and a stream, binds them, then manages the broadcast’s lifecycle. It adds API credentials, code and lifecycle decisions; it does not replace the encoder that reads and transmits the playlist. Set up a playlist from YouTube Studio
- Create the event. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one from the Manage tab. Scheduling can let viewers receive reminders and give you time to promote the event.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream’s settings, copy the server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not publish it, include it in a public script repository or put it in a screenshot.
- Prepare the files and playlist. Put the source videos in a predictable directory on the VPS. Create an ordered playlist using the selected encoder’s supported format, and set the playlist to repeat. Confirm that every referenced file exists and is readable by the account that will run the encoder.
- Configure the encoder output. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s output settings. Prefer RTMPS when supported; Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and port 443: YouTube RTMPS ingestion.
- Preview before going public. Start the encoder in a controlled test workflow and check that the preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room. Use an unlisted or private workflow if available for the channel and event. Check picture, sound, playback order and stream health before making the event public.
- Start the feed and monitor it. Once YouTube receives a healthy feed, start or transition the event as needed. Keep the encoder’s logs and YouTube’s stream health visible during the first full playlist cycle.
- Make it recoverable. Run the encoder under a service manager or container restart policy. Configure logs, disk-space checks, alerts and a documented restart procedure; test what happens after a VPS reboot and a temporary network loss.
Automate broadcast setup with the YouTube Live Streaming API
- Create a broadcast. Call
liveBroadcasts.insertwith the event title, scheduled start time and privacy status. - Create an incoming stream. Call
liveStreams.insertwith transmission settings, including ingestion type, resolution and frame rate. - Bind the event to its feed. Call
liveBroadcasts.bind. Each broadcast binds to one stream, while a stream can be used by multiple broadcasts. - Send the playlist feed. Run your VPS encoder against the stream’s ingestion details. For a test-first workflow, use the monitor-stream and testing lifecycle before making the broadcast live.
- Manage the end of the event deliberately. Decide whether and when to stop transmission and complete the broadcast. Auto-start and auto-stop are configurable lifecycle choices; do not assume they will divide a continuous playlist into new daily or weekly videos.

Size an India VPS for continuous streaming
Check the route and audience, not just the country name
Confirm the VPS’s actual city or data-centre region. An India location may be appropriate for your audience or network path, but the available sources do not establish that hosting in India automatically improves delivery to YouTube. Measure stream health and reconnection behavior from the selected server.

Estimate outbound data at your chosen bitrate
Continuous video consumes substantial outbound traffic. A useful estimate is bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8, converted to gigabytes, with additional headroom for audio, protocol overhead and reconnects. For example, a constant 4 Mb/s feed sends roughly 43.2 GB in 24 hours before overhead (4 × 86,400 ÷ 8,000); over 30 days that is about 1.3 TB. Check whether the VPS plan’s allowance covers your expected monthly total, whether sustained streaming is permitted, and what egress overages cost.
Match resources to the encoding method
CPU and memory requirements depend on the source codec, resolution, frame rate and whether the encoder re-encodes the video or only remuxes compatible source files. There is no universal VPS size for every playlist. Test the actual files and settings, watch CPU and memory under sustained load, and leave capacity for the operating system and recovery tasks.

Compare the full operating cost
- Monthly VPS price, taxes and bandwidth overages.
- Backup or snapshot charges and whether you can reach a recovery console if SSH fails.
- Support response terms and what the published SLA actually remedies.
- Storage for the media files, logs and temporary files.
- Any extra service needed to monitor the process and alert you when it stops.
Provider-published resources, prices and SLAs can change; verify them with the provider before purchasing.
Plan the broadcast lifecycle and archives
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement applies to streams shorter than 12 hours; it is not a promise that one broadcast can run or archive indefinitely. If you need separate daily or weekly archives, design and test a schedule that ends one broadcast and creates another instead of assuming a forever-running feed will produce the archive structure you want.

The broadcast event and incoming stream have separate lifecycle handling. A long-running playlist can keep supplying video, but you must decide how events begin and end, whether a stream is reused, and what viewers should see during transitions. See Google’s broadcast lifecycle documentation.

Keep the playlist eligible for YouTube
Automation does not grant rights to the videos you play. Use material you own or have permission to stream, including music, visuals and any third-party footage. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming rules before scheduling a public feed. A loop also does not make repetitive or reused material original; channels should review YouTube’s monetization policies separately if monetization is a goal. Do not expose the stream key, and confirm your channel’s live-streaming eligibility and event settings in Studio.
Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube shows no incoming video
- Check that the encoder is running and can read the playlist files.
- Verify the exact server URL and stream key in the encoder; replace the key if it was exposed.
- Confirm the VPS can reach YouTube’s ingestion endpoint and that outbound port 443 is available for RTMPS.
- Check the encoder log and YouTube Live Control Room for a rejected connection or stream health warning.
The feed disconnects or the encoder exits
- Inspect logs for network resets, process crashes, memory exhaustion or a source file error.
- Use a supervisor with a restart policy, then confirm it actually restarts the encoder after a test stop or VPS reboot.
- Check the provider’s outbound traffic limits and whether sustained streaming is permitted.
- Use alerts so an unattended failure is visible rather than relying on the stream page alone.
Video plays once and then stops
- Check that repeat/loop behavior is enabled in the playlist or encoder configuration.
- Confirm the playlist format supports looping in the encoder version you installed.
- Look for an unreadable, moved or damaged file at the point playback stops.
YouTube reports poor stream health
- Review the encoder’s output settings against the event’s configured resolution and frame rate.
- Check for low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch or missing audio; YouTube’s stream status can report such problems.
- Monitor VPS CPU load and outbound network stability during the problem, then adjust settings based on observed behavior rather than assuming India hosting fixes the route.
The desired archive is missing or split differently than expected
Check the event’s lifecycle and duration. The documented automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; plan separate broadcasts if you require predictable segments, and verify the outcome with a controlled test.
