You can use a 30-minute audit to find crawl blocks, check what Googlebot receives, and review available AI citation data. It cannot guarantee that an AI product will cite your site—or measure visibility across every product, prompt, or locale. The title’s “free CLI” is not identified clearly enough to recommend an installation or claim a specific tool is the one intended; this workflow instead uses available site controls and webmaster dashboards.

What this audit can—and cannot—tell you

Keep three kinds of evidence separate:

  • Access: robots rules, server responses, CDN or WAF decisions, and logs can reveal whether a crawler was allowed or requested a page. A robots.txt check alone does not establish that a vendor’s crawler reached your site from its own network. AI Search Audit, for example, says its homepage user-agent probe cannot test access from vendor IP addresses and describes its report as a sample, not a full crawl. AI Search Audit documentation
  • Eligibility and delivery: crawler permission is not the same as indexing, inclusion in search, or delivery of useful page content. Google says robots.txt controls crawling; it is not a way to keep a page out of search. A blocked URL may still appear in results if discovered elsewhere. Google’s robots.txt guide
  • Observed visibility: a dashboard or answer citation shows activity in a particular product and period. It is not a universal visibility score or proof that one site change caused a trend. Bing says its AI Performance trends reflect aggregated citation activity and cannot be attributed to a specific cause. Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance

The schedule below is a practical way to time-box the work, not a validated industry standard or a claim that every step takes exactly the listed time.

Minutes 0–5: choose pages and record a baseline

Pick a small, useful sample

Choose a handful of high-value URLs: for example, a key product or service page, an explanatory article, and an important support page. For each, write down the question it should answer and the AI or search surfaces that matter to your audience. A small sample helps you investigate specific delivery problems; it cannot represent your whole site.

Make observations reproducible

Record the date, locale, URL, and exact query or prompt whenever you inspect search results or an AI answer. If you compare citations later, keep the platform and date range consistent. This is a practical record-keeping recommendation, not an industry reporting standard.

Minutes 5–12: check crawler access and page rules

Inspect robots.txt and page-level controls

Read the site’s root robots.txt and look for rules affecting your selected paths. Then inspect each page’s directives, such as a meta robots tag or an HTTP X-Robots-Tag. Robots.txt is a crawl directive, not a security boundary or a reliable deindexing method. Use authentication or other access controls to protect private material; use noindex when the goal is to keep an eligible page out of search results. Google notes that a robots-blocked URL can still be indexed without its contents if it is found through links or other signals. Google’s robots.txt guide

Distinguish crawler roles

Do not assume that allowing one crawler allows every bot from the same company. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for surfacing websites in ChatGPT search separately from GPTBot, which collects content that may be used for model training; the controls are independent. It says robots.txt changes may take about 24 hours to be reflected by its search systems. OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI Crawlers

Anthropic likewise documents distinct ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, and Claude-User purposes. Review the current crawler documentation for the services relevant to your site rather than treating “AI crawler” as one category. Anthropic crawler documentation

Look beyond robots.txt

Check whether authentication, rate limiting, a CDN, a WAF, or a JavaScript challenge could prevent a crawler from receiving the page. If you have access to server or CDN logs, look for requests to the selected URLs and record the user-agent, response status, and timestamp. A user-agent string is evidence of a request claiming that identity, not by itself proof of the requester’s origin; robots rules and log entries also do not prove that every vendor can fetch every page.

Minutes 12–18: verify what Googlebot receives

Use URL Inspection for selected pages

In Google Search Console, open URL Inspection, enter a selected URL, and inspect the available crawl and indexing details. Where available, use the live test and rendered-page view to check what Googlebot received. Look for the page’s substantive text and essential resources, not just a successful HTTP response. A page can be reachable while its key content is absent from the version Google renders.

Google’s AI features are part of Search; Google says standard SEO best practices remain relevant to those features. Search Console reports performance for AI features within the Web search type rather than providing a separate AI-only reporting surface. URL Inspection tells you what Googlebot received, not what every AI service receives. Treat it as evidence about Google’s crawler and delivery path only.

Minutes 18–25: look for observed citations and referrals

Check Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance

In Bing Webmaster Tools, open the AI Performance report if it is available for your property. For supported Microsoft AI experiences, the report includes cited pages, grounding queries, and changes over the selected period. Record the report’s date range and the pages or queries it shows. Bing explicitly cautions that the trends measure visible citation activity, not ranking, authority, or importance; shifts may reflect query mix, page changes, or system and model changes, and the trend alone cannot establish a cause. Use Google and analytics for the reports they provide

In Search Console, review the Web search performance report for relevant pages and queries; it includes Google AI feature performance in that search type, not a separate AI-only view. Analytics can help you inspect visits and referral sources that are recorded by your analytics setup, but a referral report is not a complete record of answers that cited a page without sending a click. Compare like periods and platforms rather than treating unlike dashboards as directly interchangeable.

Use a CLI only when its evidence is clear

A project called Aeolo’s aeo describes itself as a GEO CLI and lists visibility and traffic commands. The available information does not establish that it is the CLI intended by this article’s title, so no installation steps or commands are attributed to it here. Aeolo’s aeo repository

When assessing any audit CLI or service, check what it actually measures before treating its output as evidence:

  • Does it read robots.txt, probe a URL, or inspect the real serving path?
  • Does it check one URL or a site-wide sample?
  • Does it distinguish search or retrieval crawlers from training crawlers?
  • Does it show the observation, affected resource, and confidence—or provide only a score?
  • Which engines, geography, language, and date range does it cover?
  • Is the result a direct platform metric, an observed crawl, or a modeled estimate?

AI Search Audit says its findings include an observation, resource, and confidence, and that checks it cannot run are reported as unavailable rather than failures. Those are the vendor’s descriptions of its own tool, not independent validation that its scores predict future citations. AI Search Audit documentation

Minutes 25–30: save evidence and choose one next fix

Keep a compact audit record

For each finding, save the URL, date and time, tool or log source, observed status or output, and the next action. Separate confirmed blockers from unanswered questions. For example, a disallowed path is a verifiable access issue; a page not appearing in a small set of prompts is an observation, not proof that the page is universally invisible.

Prioritize a fix you can verify

Start with concrete problems: an unintended disallow rule, an authentication wall on public content, a CDN denial, or a rendered page without its essential text. Make one change at a time where practical, then rerun the same checks and retain the before-and-after evidence. If citation counts change, treat that as an observed trend; it does not prove the change caused the difference.

Why might AI products not mention a site?

This audit can help identify access and content-delivery problems, but a successful fetch does not guarantee indexing, selection for a response, or a citation. Different products use different systems, and citations may vary with the question, locale, date, and product changes. Use access logs, inspection tools, and citation reports to narrow down what is known; do not interpret a missing citation in a small sample as proof of a site-wide block.

How is this different from a standard SEO audit?

The access, indexing, and page-delivery checks overlap with ordinary technical SEO. The additional emphasis is on crawler roles used by particular AI products and on platform-specific evidence such as Bing’s AI Performance report. Google’s stated approach is that its AI features are part of Search and follow its standard SEO guidance, with performance reported under Web search type. Neither type of audit can promise a citation.

How often should you repeat the audit?

Repeat the same checks after a material change to robots rules, page rendering, CDN or WAF configuration, or authentication, and periodically if AI referrals or citations matter to your site. Keep the sampled URLs, prompts, locales, and reporting periods consistent enough to compare observations. The evidence here does not establish a universal re-audit interval.
