To check a music royalty payout, reconcile the statement for the exact service and reporting period against your rights, ownership share, and agreement—not against a public stream count alone. If a line still looks wrong, document the specific mismatch and ask the party that issued the statement to explain its calculation before treating it as a confirmed underpayment.
Why don’t streams translate into a fixed payout?
A stream count is not a guaranteed payment calculator. Spotify says royalties are calculated using streamshare, not a fixed per-stream rate. The value can vary with listener country, subscription plan, and overall streaming volume. What reaches an individual artist can also depend on the relevant rightsholder’s share, fees, and any recoupment terms in the artist’s agreement.

Spotify for Artists describes the royalty report from a rightsholder as the most accurate source for understanding royalties generated from Spotify streams. That report is a better starting point for tracing an individual artist’s earnings than multiplying public plays by an assumed rate. It still needs to be read alongside the agreement and the rights and shares recorded for the release.
How to reconcile a royalty statement
- Start with the statement for the period in question. Note the service, territory, track or release identifiers, usage, gross amount, deductions, ownership share, currency, fees, and payment status wherever the report supplies them.
- Compare like with like. Match the same service, territory, track or release, reporting period, usage basis, currency, ownership share, deductions, and payment status. A public play count for one window is not directly comparable with a payout covering a different period or territory.
- Verify the rights and metadata. Check that the account, release information, writer and ownership splits, and registrations reflect the rights you actually hold. A mismatch in a registration or split can affect where royalties are reported or paid.
- Read the relevant agreement. Check the applicable royalty share, costs, fees, advance, and recoupment position. Spotify for Artists advises artists to review their statements and understand their agreement terms, costs, and recoupment status.
- Keep a comparison record. Save the statements and record the fields that differ. This makes it easier to distinguish a genuine accounting question from differences in period, territory, share, or payment status.
What could explain a suspicious amount?
A discrepancy deserves investigation, but it does not by itself prove that royalties were improperly withheld. Check the possible causes below before deciding what kind of correction or explanation to request.

Allocation, shares, and recoupment
Platform allocation is not a fixed per-play calculation, and the amount reported to a rightsholder is not necessarily the amount payable to an individual artist. The relevant agreement may specify shares, fees, costs, or recoupment of an advance. Confirm that the statement and agreement cover the same rights and parties.
Platform adjustments for artificial streaming
Spotify says confirmed artificial-streaming cases may result in associated royalties being withheld and public stream counts being corrected. If you believe the streams were authentic, Spotify advises giving your distributor or label information about the genuine promotion methods used. Apple Music Provider Support describes reports for stream-manipulation adjustments and excluded streams, including breakdowns by content, subscription type, and storefront. Review the applicable platform report and ask your intermediary how any adjustment affected the artist statement.

Reporting timing or a deferred small balance
A missing payment does not necessarily mean a royalty entry is missing. Under 37 CFR 210.29, The MLC may defer certain mechanical-royalty distributions and statements while balances are below thresholds that vary by payment method. The cited thresholds are less than $5 for direct deposit, $100 for a physical check, or $250 for a wire transfer. These are thresholds for the specified MLC deferrals under the U.S. regulation—not universal minimum payout amounts for streaming services, distributors, or other collection organizations. Check the account’s accrued balance and payment method before treating a small unpaid amount as an accounting error.

Incorrect or incomplete rights registration
Streaming can generate royalties for different rights through different routes. The U.S. Copyright Office says songwriters and publishers must register with The MLC to receive royalties under the U.S. blanket mechanical license. It also describes SoundExchange’s role in distributing certain sound-recording royalties under statutory licensing. A master-recording statement from a distributor should not be assumed to include every composition or performance royalty. Which organization applies depends on the rights, territory, and arrangement.

A payment or ownership claim dispute
A disagreement over who owns or registered a share may not be resolved by changing a statement alone. SoundExchange says an artist dispute can arise when competing claimants assert shares of featured-artist royalties that together exceed 100 percent. It does not interpret third-party agreements and follows instructions from a recording’s direct registrants. Keep relevant split sheets, agreements, registrations, and correspondence so the underlying claim can be addressed with the appropriate parties.
How to ask for a correction or explanation
Write to the distributor, label, publisher, or collection organization that issued the statement. There is no universal appeal form or response deadline established for every agreement, so use the channel and timing specified in your contract or account terms where available.

- Identify the exact reporting period, service, territory, track or release, and amount.
- State what the statement reports and which record appears inconsistent.
- Attach relevant statement pages, screenshots, agreements, or registration records, keeping copies for yourself.
- Ask for the calculation, applicable ownership share, deductions, and the reason for any adjustment or withholding.
- Keep dated copies of your inquiry and the response, along with any follow-up records.
Keep the request factual and specific. A clear question about one line item is easier to investigate than a general claim that the overall payout is too low.

Formal audit rights depend on the legal framework and the contract. The U.S. Music Modernization Act’s blanket-license system is a specific statutory context, not a universal audit right for artists against every distributor or label.

The U.S. Music Modernization Act framework
The U.S. Copyright Office explains that The MLC may periodically audit digital music providers, and musical-work copyright owners may periodically audit The MLC. Under the described process, an audit notice is filed with the Office and delivered to the party being audited; the Office causes notice to be published in the Federal Register within 45 days. This process concerns the parties and rights covered by that law.
Private label or distributor agreements
For a private arrangement, inspect the contract’s audit clause. Check who may audit, what records and periods are in scope, how much notice is required, auditor qualifications, confidentiality requirements, cost allocation, and any deadline for raising a claim. Contract terms and applicable law can differ, and there is no single set of conditions established for every deal.
If a material amount, ownership claim, or contractual deadline is involved, consider getting advice from a qualified music-business or legal professional in the relevant jurisdiction. The right next step may depend on the agreement, the rights at issue, and local law.
