Treat a suspected LiteLLM compromise as a breach of the proxy and every credential it held. Immediately restrict internet reachability, preserve logs and deployment metadata, inventory and revoke all virtual, master, database, UI, and upstream-provider credentials, then issue narrowly scoped replacements. Patch every LiteLLM replica from a trusted build, review organizations, teams, users, service accounts, and administrator roles, and correlate LiteLLM events with reverse-proxy, cloud-network, provider, and PostgreSQL records. A clean-looking application log is not proof that credentials were not read.
What a LiteLLM compromise can expose
LiteLLM is a gateway, not merely a request router. A deployment may contain virtual API keys, a master key, database credentials, UI login credentials, service-account keys, configuration, and upstream provider credentials. An intruder who reaches the proxy or its database may therefore use provider accounts directly, bypass proxy budgets and model filters, create new keys, or read information that normal request logs never show.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The practical incident boundary is every secret and identity that existed in the deployment during the possible exposure window. Do not limit the investigation to the token seen in one suspicious request. The Cloud Security Alliance (CSAI Foundation) notes published April 28 and April 30, 2026 recommend rotating every virtual API key, master key, and upstream provider credential stored by an affected deployment. Those recommendations are medium-confidence incident context until checked against the current LiteLLM maintainer advisory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Application logs can be incomplete for database reads, failed injection attempts, direct provider calls, deleted records, or activity on another replica. A missing alert means only that the relevant event was not captured there. Use several independent evidence sources and record uncertainty explicitly.

First hour: contain the gateway and preserve evidence
Restrict public reachability
Remove the proxy and Admin UI from the public internet as the first containment action. Put them behind a VPN, an authenticated reverse proxy, an internal load balancer, or an equivalent firewall and network policy. Keep only the administrative and application networks that must reach the service. If an immediate block would interrupt critical workloads, apply an allowlist for known source networks while preparing a controlled shutdown or credential cutover.
Do not make broad configuration changes before preserving the state that may explain the intrusion. Record all times in UTC and identify the earliest plausible exposure time, not just the time a suspicious call was noticed.
Snapshot deployment metadata without copying secrets
Capture the following in the incident record:
- LiteLLM image or package version and digest, including every running replica.
- Container, virtual-machine, Kubernetes, or process identifiers and deployment timestamps.
- Configuration-file names and environment-variable names, but never paste secret values into the case file.
- Database connection target, database engine and version, enabled callbacks, and logging or redaction settings.
- Ingress, reverse-proxy, WAF, load-balancer, firewall, and identity-provider rules.
- Provider accounts, model routes, regions, and the secret-manager references used to inject credentials.
Export the original files and logs in a read-only evidence area. Hash each export in the case-management system, retain the hash beside the file, and preserve the suspected window plus a clean comparison period before the incident. Raw copies must remain available even if operational copies are later redacted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Preserve every relevant log source
Collect reverse-proxy and WAF access logs, load-balancer records, host and container logs, Kubernetes audit and ingress logs, cloud-flow or firewall logs, LiteLLM callback and application logs, provider usage and billing records, and PostgreSQL query or audit logs. Include authentication failures, configuration changes, secret-manager access, and process restarts. Keep source address, destination, timestamp, method, path, status, user-agent, request identifier, and response size where available.
Inventory and rotate every credential
Build the inventory from the database, secret manager, deployment manifests, CI/CD variables, provider consoles, and administrator interviews. Mark when each credential was created, last used, last rotated, owner, scope, and whether it was present on a potentially exposed replica.

| Credential class | Action | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| LiteLLM virtual keys | Revoke every key present during the exposure window, including inactive or apparently unused keys. Issue replacements with the smallest organization, team, model, rate, and spend scope. | Old tokens return an authentication failure; replacement tokens work only for their assigned models and budgets. |
| LiteLLM master key | Rotate it even when application logs show no successful extraction. Update the secret-manager reference and all replicas. | Old master material is rejected everywhere, including administrative scripts and health-check jobs. |
| Service-account and automation keys | Revoke and recreate CI, batch, monitoring, and integration credentials. Remove keys with no current owner. | Each workload authenticates with its replacement and cannot perform interactive administration unless explicitly required. |
| Admin UI bootstrap credentials | Replace shared environment-based login with named administrator accounts before disabling the shared path. | Each administrator can sign in individually, and the old environment credential no longer works. |
| Database credentials | Rotate the database user password or token, review its privileges, and update every gateway replica and migration job. | Old credentials fail; the application still has only the tables and operations it needs. |
| Upstream provider credentials | Revoke every provider key or role that was available to the affected deployment. Use provider-native rotation and narrow permissions. | Old credentials fail at the provider, and provider usage matches the new LiteLLM routes. |
Rotate in an order that avoids a second outage
- Create replacement provider credentials with the minimum model and project scope. For AWS Bedrock, prefer narrowly scoped IAM roles and policies tied to required model ARNs; do not use account-root or broadly permissive credentials.
- Store replacement values in the secret manager under new versions or references. Do not overwrite evidence copies or place secrets in chat, tickets, shell history, or source control.
- Revoke old provider credentials, then update LiteLLM’s secret-manager references and restart every gateway instance consistently.
- Rotate the LiteLLM master key and virtual keys. Revoke first, issue replacements second, and update applications through their normal secret-delivery mechanism.
- Check for old replicas, paused jobs, disaster-recovery environments, and developer sandboxes that may still serve the previous secrets.
- Test a representative request with a replacement key and verify that the old key fails at the proxy and, where applicable, at the provider.
Rotation is not complete until the old credential has been rejected. A replacement that is merely stored in a secret manager while an old replica remains live does not close the exposure.
Hunt LiteLLM and network logs together
Use LiteLLM’s per-request call_id as the primary join field. Preserve the raw value and correlate it with callback records, reverse-proxy entries, WAF events, load-balancer logs, and external observability exports. Key aliases can connect a request to an owner without placing the secret itself in an investigation note.
Events that deserve focused searches
- Bursts of key generation, key deletion, key regeneration, or alias changes.
- Unexpected organization, team, user, service-account, role, budget, model, or configuration changes.
- Requests to administrative, health, documentation, callback, or unusual model routes that are not part of normal traffic.
- Familiar credentials used from unfamiliar source addresses, autonomous-system ranges, countries, user-agents, or time zones.
- Sudden changes in model selection, token volume, latency, error rates, or spend.
- Outbound connections from the proxy or host to destinations not used by the configured providers, secret manager, telemetry, or update process.
- Authentication failures followed by a successful login, especially from the same source or a new source.
Search both successful and failed requests. An attacker may probe permissions, discover routes, or test an injection without completing a request. Preserve the source address as observed at the edge; an application may record only the last proxy hop unless forwarding headers are configured and trusted.
Interpret suspicious Authorization headers carefully
Review captured headers for SQL metacharacters or keywords such as a quote, UNION, SELECT, FROM, WHERE, --, or /**/. These are indicators for triage, not proof of exploitation. Legitimate tokens can contain punctuation, scanners can generate false positives, and a successful exploit may use a different encoding or leave no application-level error.
Do not publish or circulate complete bearer tokens during the review. Hash or partially mask them in working copies, restrict access to the raw evidence, and document the redaction method so investigators can still determine whether two records refer to the same credential.

Review PostgreSQL and provider-side evidence
Database reads may be the missing signal
Review PostgreSQL query logs, connection logs, statement statistics, and database audit trails for reads or exports involving credential, verification-token, configuration, user, team, organization, and key tables. Look for access by unexpected database users, unusual client addresses, large result sets, queries outside normal maintenance windows, and reads that do not correspond to a LiteLLM request.
Check whether logging was enabled for the entire exposure window. If it was not, record the gap rather than inferring that no query occurred. Database-level evidence may survive when an attacker avoided an application route, and it may show a read even when LiteLLM emitted no alert.
Compare provider usage with LiteLLM spend
Export provider-side usage, billing, authentication, and key-management records for the suspected window and a comparable clean period. Compare model, region, account, timestamp, token or request volume, and source metadata with LiteLLM spend records. Direct provider calls made with extracted credentials may appear only at the provider and therefore cannot be reconciled to a LiteLLM call_id.
Flag provider activity that continues after LiteLLM keys are revoked, occurs from an unexpected region, uses a model that the gateway never routes, or exceeds the budgets recorded by LiteLLM. Keep the provider’s timestamps and timezone definition beside the export; do not silently convert an ambiguous timestamp.
Preserve and improve redaction
Keep raw logs under restricted access before applying redaction. For ongoing operations, enable message redaction and user-key metadata redaction where appropriate. Document which keys, teams, or service accounts are permitted to opt out and why. Redaction should remove secrets while retaining enough request, identity, and timing data to correlate an incident.

Audit organizations, teams, users, and service accounts
Export the current identity and authorization state before deleting anything. Retain a dated copy for comparison with the deployment snapshot and, if available, an earlier known-good export.
| Identity or object | Record | Decision questions |
|---|---|---|
| Organization | Owner, members, teams, budgets, model scope, rate limits, and administrators. | Does the organization still have a business owner and only the models and budget it needs? |
| Team | Team owner, members, keys, aliases, allowed models, limits, and delegated permissions. | Can a team change only the fields intentionally enabled by the proxy administrator? |
| User | Identity source, role, organization and team scope, last-seen activity, and key-creation authority. | Is the account named, active, owned, and limited to its job? |
| Service account | Application owner, workload, key age, source networks, model scope, and rotation contact. | Would the workload continue to function with a project-scoped key and no interactive privileges? |
| Virtual key | Alias, creator, owner, creation and last-use times, models, rate limits, budget, and expiration. | Is the key still needed, and does its scope exceed the workload’s actual requirement? |
| Administrator role | Named person, role level, organizations visible, mutation rights, and last administrative action. | Can the person perform only the administrative changes required by the role? |
Remove excess and orphaned access
- Delete dormant users, orphaned keys, duplicate administrator identities, and service accounts without a current owner.
- Replace shared accounts with individually attributable identities.
- Remove key-creation, deletion, budget, model, and configuration rights from users who do not need them.
- Set expiration or review dates for temporary access and document exceptions.
- Check that organization and team boundaries match billing and data boundaries; a key should not cross them merely for convenience.
Prefer organization- and team-scoped roles. Platform-wide viewer roles are sensitive even when they cannot mutate data: they may expose all organizations, teams, users, spend, usage, and API keys. Grant that visibility only to people who need it, and treat a viewer’s credentials as high-value secrets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Replace shared administrative authentication
A shared environment login prevents reliable attribution and becomes a single credential to steal. Create named administrator accounts and test the individual path before disabling the shared one.
- Create and test a per-user
proxy_adminaccount for each authorized administrator. - Confirm that each account has the intended organization, team, and platform scope, and that a test administrator cannot perform an out-of-scope mutation.
- If single sign-on is configured, verify password-login restrictions, identity-provider group mappings, deprovisioning, and the emergency recovery path.
- Enable
disable_env_credential_loginonly after the named-account path and recovery account have been tested. - Remove
UI_USERNAMEandUI_PASSWORDfrom the deployment and secret manager after verification. Search manifests, CI variables, and old replicas for copies. - Keep failed-login rate limiting enabled and review failures by source address and identity.
- Disable the Admin UI entirely when operationally feasible; manage it through a restricted administrative path instead.
LiteLLM Enterprise describes its audit capability with the phrase “Every admin action is on record.” Treat that as an Enterprise audit-log promise, not a guarantee for every deployment or license level, and verify current licensing, retention, and export behavior before relying on it for incident response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePatch and rebuild the deployment
Check the current LiteLLM security advisory and release notes before selecting a remediation version. A CSAI Foundation research note about the cited 2026 SQL-injection exposure identifies LiteLLM 1.83.7 or later as the complete remediation and describes disable_error_logs: true only as a temporary workaround while patching. Confirm that recommendation against the current maintainer advisory, because a later advisory may change the required version or configuration.
Best Value
- Obtain a trusted package or image through the normal release channel and record its digest or version.
- Verify image signatures where available and compare the build provenance with the deployment policy.
- Rebuild rather than modifying a running container in place.
- Roll the new build through every replica, worker, scheduled job, and disaster-recovery environment.
- Confirm that the new instances receive only the replacement secrets and that old instances are stopped and unreachable.
- Review callbacks, error handling, database permissions, ingress rules, and redaction settings after the restart.
Do not treat a version change as a substitute for rotation. A patched gateway can still be abused with credentials stolen before the patch.
Validate controls after rotation
Run a controlled validation using test identities and nonproduction routes where possible. Record expected and actual results rather than relying on a visual check of the Admin UI.
- Old virtual keys, master keys, provider keys, database credentials, and shared UI credentials are rejected.
- Replacement keys work only for their assigned organization, team, model, rate, and budget.
- A regular team member cannot create or delete keys, change configuration, alter budgets, or view unrelated organizations.
- A team administrator can change only the fields intentionally delegated by the proxy administrator.
- Named administrator actions identify the person and produce the expected audit or callback record.
- Admin and proxy endpoints are unreachable from the public internet and reachable from approved networks.
- Provider spend, model usage, outbound destinations, authentication failures, and privileged changes remain within expected ranges.
- All replicas report the remediated version and replacement secret references.
Set a post-rotation observation period appropriate to your normal traffic and provider billing delay. Review at short intervals at first, then compare daily totals with the clean baseline. Escalate if provider usage continues under revoked credentials, new privileged identities appear, outbound destinations change, or a replica cannot be accounted for.

The right control set depends on whether the gateway is a small internal service or a multi-organization platform. Compare capabilities rather than labels or marketing claims.
| Control axis | Self-managed open-source deployment | Enterprise or external observability layer |
|---|---|---|
| Named identity and SSO | Configured and maintained by your team; verify identity-provider mappings and recovery paths. | May provide integrated SSO or SAML and delegated administration; verify edition and current licensing. |
| Role granularity | Depends on the deployed LiteLLM version and your configuration. | May add delegated team administration; test actual mutation boundaries. |
| Audit retention | You must size, protect, export, and retain logs. | May offer retained audit logs; verify fields, retention duration, export format, and “Every admin action is on record” scope. |
| Secret rotation | Use your secret manager, provider-native rotation, and deployment automation. | May integrate with secret managers; confirm whether rotation is automatic or still requires your runbooks. |
| Network controls | Implement VPN, authenticated proxy, allowlists, and private routing yourself. | May add administrative controls, but internet exposure still requires your network policy. |
| Redaction and privacy | Choose callback, message, and key-metadata redaction and document exceptions. | Check what data leaves the gateway, retention, regional processing, and opt-out controls. |
| Provider correlation | Join call_id, key alias, provider records, and database logs in your own system. |
Centralized observability can simplify retention and correlation; validate provider-side coverage. |
| Incident support | Your team owns triage, patching, and escalation. | Support may help with product incidents; define response times and evidence access before an emergency. |
| Total cost | Software licensing may be lower, but engineering time, storage, and response work remain costs. | Subscription and support costs trade against administration and retention effort; price the required edition and capacity. |
Centralized telemetry is useful when you have a stated requirement for long retention, cross-system correlation, or multiple operators. It is not a replacement for provider-side records, database auditing, network controls, or credential rotation.
Document residual uncertainty and close the incident
Write a final evidence statement that distinguishes confirmed facts from unknowns. Include the exposure window, public and private network paths, versions and replica coverage, credentials rotated and their verification results, log sources and retention gaps, provider-side findings, deleted or unavailable records, and the observation period.
State plainly if you cannot determine whether the proxy was internet-exposed, whether a replica served old secrets, whether database query logging covered the full window, or whether provider activity can be correlated to a LiteLLM request. Those limits affect the severity decision and the monitoring plan; they are not reasons to assume safety.
After closure, schedule recurring reviews of public reachability, named administrator membership, dormant keys, key age, team and model scope, provider permissions, failed logins, outbound destinations, and version advisories. The objective is to make the next investigation attributable, complete, and reversible rather than dependent on a shared credential or a single application log.
