Audit a Discord bot before authorization by matching every requested permission to a specific feature, reviewing the bot’s separate data access, and checking where channel overrides will apply. Treat any request for Administrator as a stop-and-investigate signal, then verify the developer’s terms and privacy policy. For bots already installed, use Server Settings > Integrations > Bots and Apps and the bot profile’s Data Access tab to review scope.
Why a permission audit matters
Adding a bot gives a third-party application a place inside your server’s permission system. The app is created and operated by its developer; its listing or authorization screen in Discord is not proof that the developer is trustworthy. Discord recommends reading the app’s overview and the developer’s terms and privacy policy before installation. You can start with Discord’s guidance on using apps on Discord.

A permission audit answers three different questions:
- What can the bot do? These are action permissions such as sending messages, deleting messages, managing roles, or creating channels.
- What information can it access? Data access is a separate issue and can include member profile details, roles, message metadata, reactions, voice participation metadata, and language settings.
- Where can it do or see those things? Server roles, the
@everyonerole, and channel-specific overrides determine the effective scope.
A bot can have a narrowly described purpose but still request broader access than that purpose requires. Conversely, a bot may have modest action permissions while its data access is unsuitable for your community. Review both dimensions before clicking Authorize.

Start with the bot’s actual job
Write down the feature you need
Describe the intended use in one sentence, such as “assign a role when a member completes verification” or “post scheduled announcements in one channel.” This prevents a vague promise such as “server management” from justifying unrelated access.
Break the feature into actions the bot must perform. A verification workflow might need to read a command in a designated channel and assign one role. A moderation workflow might need to read messages, send warning notices, and delete rule-breaking content. A ticket workflow might need to create channels and manage permissions for those channels. If you cannot name the action, you do not yet have a reason to grant the permission.
Check the developer’s explanation
Read the bot’s Discord overview and follow links to its terms and privacy policy. Look for an explanation of what information is collected, why it is collected, how long it is retained, whether it is shared, and how a server owner can request deletion. The absence of a clear explanation is a reason to postpone installation, not a reason to grant broad access “temporarily.”
Recognize high-risk requests
Discord describes Administrator as its most powerful permission. The official Discord Roles and Permissions guidance says: “Administrator is the most powerful role permission. It grants all permissions and bypasses all channel restrictions, so be sure to assign this role with extreme caution.”
If a bot requests Administrator, ask the developer which individual permissions are needed and whether the bot can operate without the combined grant. A bot that only posts alerts, assigns one role, or handles commands in one channel normally deserves a more limited design. Do not accept an Administrator request merely because it makes setup easier.
Give additional scrutiny to requests that can change the server’s structure or other members’ access:

- Role management: can the bot create, edit, move, or assign roles? Confirm that its role cannot be used to grant privileges above the bot’s own position.
- Message deletion or moderation: identify which channels require it and whether moderation logs will be visible to staff.
- Channel creation or management: determine whether the feature needs new channels, edits to existing channels, or only access to a fixed channel.
- Member or server management: verify the exact administrative action and who can trigger it.
Separate action permissions from data access
Permission prompts describe actions. Data access describes information available to the app, and the two should be evaluated independently. Discord’s Visibility of Bot Data Access documentation identifies baseline categories that can include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Basic member profile information
- Members’ roles
- Message metadata, such as the day and time of a message
- Voice-channel participation metadata
- Reactions
- Users’ language settings
A bot may also receive information from direct communication or interactions with users. Ask whether each category is necessary for the feature. For example, a role-assignment tool may need member and role information but have no obvious reason to process voice participation. A reaction-based poll needs reactions and the messages involved in the poll, but not necessarily broad access to every channel.
Data access can change over time. Discord encourages regular review of the bot profile and access page, so an approval made months ago should not be treated as permanent evidence that the current scope is appropriate.
Use a permission-to-feature worksheet
Before authorizing, make a short record. This is more reliable than trying to remember why you approved a prompt later.
| Requested capability | Feature that supposedly needs it | Questions to answer | Safer boundary to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Send messages | Replies, alerts, or scheduled posts | Which channels must receive posts? Can users trigger unsolicited messages? | Limit the bot’s role and channel access to announcement or command channels. |
| Read message content or message-related events | Commands, moderation, filters, or automation | Does the feature need all channels or only messages directed at the bot? | Keep private support, staff, and sensitive channels outside its effective scope where possible. |
| Delete messages | Moderation or cleanup | What rules trigger deletion? Are actions logged and reversible? | Restrict operation to moderation channels and define a human review process. |
| Manage roles | Verification, leveling, or access automation | Which role can it assign? Can it modify roles that protect staff or sensitive areas? | Place the bot’s role below protected roles and use a dedicated, narrowly purposed role. |
| Manage channels or create channels | Tickets, temporary rooms, or onboarding | When may it create, rename, archive, or delete a channel? | Use a defined category and document cleanup and retention rules. |
| Administrator | Developer claims that one broad grant is required | Why can’t specific permissions support the feature? What channel restrictions would be bypassed? | Require a documented technical reason and owner approval; otherwise reject the installation. |
The worksheet does not certify a bot as safe. It records whether the requested access has a concrete, limited purpose and gives you a basis for declining anything unexplained.

Server-wide permissions come from the @everyone role and any roles assigned to a member or bot. A channel can then override those permissions for that channel. Discord’s permission documentation explains the hierarchy and the evaluation of channel-level denies and allows in its Setting Up Permissions FAQ and permission hierarchy guide.

Consequently, a server-wide permission list is not a complete audit. Inspect every channel where the bot will operate, especially private staff areas, member support channels, incident logs, and channels containing personal information. A bot may be unable to use a permission in one channel because of an override, yet have access in another. Conversely, an apparently limited bot can gain an unexpected path through a role that is allowed in a sensitive channel.
Record the bot’s assigned role, the roles it can manage, and the channels in which it is visible or can post. If the bot’s role is moved above a protected role, role-management risk changes; include role position in your review whenever the bot can manage roles.
Inspect the authorization request before clicking Authorize
- Open the bot’s authorization page from a source you trust. Confirm the application name, developer identity, and destination server. Do not authorize a link copied from an unverified message.
- Read every requested permission. Expand the details if Discord presents a collapsed list. Write each item in your worksheet instead of accepting the combined summary.
- Match each item to a feature. If the developer’s documentation does not explain a permission, pause and ask for clarification.
- Check for broad management powers. Pay particular attention to Administrator, role management, message deletion, and channel creation.
- Review data practices. Follow the developer’s terms and privacy policy and compare the stated collection with the bot’s Data Access information.
- Confirm the server decision-maker. Discord says the owner or a member with Manage Server can add server apps. Obtain your server’s approval before proceeding if you are not the owner.
- Authorize only after the scope is acceptable. A refusal is the correct outcome when a permission or data practice cannot be justified.
Review an installed bot in Discord
Find the installed-app list
In Discord desktop or a browser, open the server and go to Server Settings > Integrations > Bots and Apps. Discord’s Server Integrations Page documentation says administrators can see which apps are installed, when each was added, who added it, and the app’s requested permissions.
Use the list to identify installations that have no current owner or documented purpose. “Added by” is useful for accountability, but it does not prove that the original decision remains appropriate.
Open the bot’s Data Access tab
Select the bot profile and open Data Access. Discord documents this bot-specific view for desktop and browser. Compare the categories shown there with the feature worksheet and the developer’s privacy explanation. If the categories are broader than your use case, ask whether the bot can be configured differently or choose not to keep it installed.
Interface labels and rollout availability can change, so if a control is not present, check Discord’s current support documentation rather than assuming the bot has no data access. The page reflects Discord’s available visibility tools, not a security certification of the developer.

Decide whether to approve, restrict, or reject
Approve with documented limits
Approve when every requested action has a clear feature-level reason, the data categories fit the use case, the developer explains handling of information, and channel and role boundaries are understood. Save the bot’s purpose, approver, date, requested permissions, and intended channels in your server’s administrative notes.
Restrict before installation
Ask the developer whether optional permissions can be removed, whether commands can be limited to selected channels, and whether the bot supports a reduced configuration. Create dedicated roles and channels for the integration where practical. Restriction is useful only when the resulting effective permissions are actually lower; a cosmetic role name does not reduce access.
Reject the request
Reject when the bot asks for unexplained broad powers, the developer will not disclose data practices, the requested data is unrelated to the feature, or the app cannot be limited to appropriate channels. “It is popular” or “everyone uses it” is not a permission rationale.
Compare two bots for the same job
If several bots perform the same task, compare them on the same five axes rather than choosing by branding or popularity:
| Comparison axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Necessary permissions | Every requested permission and the feature that requires it. |
| Broad management powers | Whether either bot requests Administrator, role management, message deletion, or channel creation. |
| Data access | Member, role, message, voice, reaction, language, and interaction data shown or described. |
| Channel scope | Channels the bot must access and how server roles and channel overrides affect them. |
| Developer transparency | Accessible terms, privacy information, contact details, and explanations of retention and deletion. |
Do not label one bot “safer” solely because its permission prompt looks shorter. The current request, effective channel scope, data practices, and developer explanations all matter, and those details can change.

Moderation bots
List the exact moderation events the bot handles and the channels it monitors. Message deletion can remove evidence, so require a visible moderation log and define who reviews false positives. If the bot also assigns disciplinary roles, check role position and whether it can alter staff or immunity roles.
Best Value
Verification and onboarding bots
Identify the single role or set of roles assigned after verification. Check what member information is collected during the process and whether direct messages or external forms are involved. Keep onboarding channels separate from private staff channels unless the workflow genuinely requires staff access.
Ticket and support bots
Determine whether the bot creates channels, edits permissions, archives tickets, or deletes transcripts. Define who can see tickets and how long transcripts remain available. A ticket bot that can create channels may not need access to unrelated categories.
Announcement and scheduling bots
Confirm the destination channels and whether users can invoke commands elsewhere. A posting tool should not need broad moderation or role-management powers merely because it can send messages. Test the schedule in a non-critical channel before relying on it for operational notices.

What to do when the audit fails
- The bot asks for a permission that has no explanation: stop authorization and contact the developer. Do not infer necessity from the bot’s name.
- The bot needs access to a private channel unexpectedly: inspect channel overrides and the bot’s roles, then remove that channel from its effective scope if the feature still works.
- The data categories are broader than expected: ask whether collection can be reduced or whether data is retained and deleted on request. If not, decline or remove the app.
- The developer’s policy is missing or vague: treat that as an unresolved risk. A permission prompt cannot answer retention or sharing questions.
- The bot’s permissions changed after installation: repeat the audit and review the Data Access tab; Discord notes that bot data access can change over time.
Remove a bot you no longer accept
Discord’s current app guidance says a server app can be removed by kicking its bot from the server. In the member list or server management interface, locate the bot, choose the removal or kick action, and confirm. Afterward, return to Server Settings > Integrations > Bots and Apps to verify that the installation no longer appears, and remove leftover roles, channels, webhooks, or scheduled workflows that were created for it.
Removal stops the bot’s server participation, but it does not by itself answer what data the developer already retained. Use the developer’s published privacy contact or deletion process for that question, and keep a record of the date and request.
Maintain a recurring review
Set a review interval appropriate to the bot’s sensitivity and repeat the audit after major configuration changes, ownership changes, or reports of unexpected behavior. At each review:
- Confirm the bot’s current purpose and responsible owner.
- Recheck the requested permissions in the integrations page.
- Open Data Access and compare categories with the documented use.
- Inspect role position and channel overrides in every active area.
- Read updated terms or privacy information from the developer.
- Remove the bot if its current scope can no longer be justified.
The practical standard is least privilege with accountability: every permission has a named purpose, every data category has an acceptable reason, and every channel boundary is intentional. If you cannot explain the bot’s effective access in those terms, do not add it.
