Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA traffic drop that lines up with a Google spam update is a reason to investigate, not proof that the update caused the loss. The reliable approach is to verify the rollout, compare Search Console data after the rollout has finished, isolate the affected URLs and query types, check those pages against Google’s spam policies and people-first guidance, then make documented improvements and monitor the same evidence over time.
This audit cannot produce a guaranteed ranking formula. Google says changes may take days to several months to be reflected in Search, and it does not promise that any change will create a visible improvement. Your objective is to make the site demonstrably more useful, trustworthy and compliant—not to make a quick edit intended only to regain a position.

What a decline after a spam update does—and does not—mean
Google’s spam-update guidance tells sites that see a change after an update to review the spam policies and ensure that their practices comply. That is a recommendation to investigate, not an admission that the update caused every decline. Search visibility can also change because of seasonality, competitors, technical changes, demand shifts, a different search result mix or another Google system.

A useful audit connects an observed change to specific pages, searches and practices, while keeping alternative explanations visible.

The workflow below is designed for site owners, editors and SEO practitioners. Keep a record of the evidence you used, the decision made for each page group and the date you will review the result.
1. Verify the update before changing pages
Start by confirming what actually happened. Use Google’s Search Status Dashboard and its ranking-updates history to identify the update name, rollout dates and completion status. Record the timezone shown by the dashboard, the first date your own data moved and any other releases that overlapped the period.
- Record the event. Note the update label, start date, end date (or “still rolling out”), affected search systems if stated, and the date you checked the status.
- Mark your own timeline. Add launches, migrations, template changes, robots.txt or noindex changes, analytics changes, publishing campaigns, outages and major seasonal events.
- Separate update timing from causation. A decline that begins during the rollout is a correlation. Treat it as a lead to investigate rather than a diagnosis.
- Check for a manual issue separately. Review any messages in Search Console’s manual-actions and security areas. A manual action is a different investigation from an algorithmic spam-update comparison.
Google’s core-update guidance recommends waiting at least one full week after a core update has finished before comparing Search Console periods. That is a cautious analysis practice for your timeline; the cited guidance is about core updates, not a special waiting rule for spam updates. If a spam rollout has just completed, avoid drawing a final conclusion from the first few days of unsettled data.
2. Build a defensible comparison window
Choose periods that represent normal performance and contain enough data to reveal a pattern. Compare a period before the rollout with a period after completion, and use the same number of days in each period. If the site is highly seasonal, compare a like-for-like period from the prior year as a secondary check rather than treating it as a perfect control.
- Use Search Console’s date comparison. In Performance > Search results, select a custom range and activate Compare with the same duration before and after the event.
- Preserve the four primary metrics. Export clicks, impressions, average position and click-through rate (CTR) for both periods. A change in one metric without the others can indicate a different problem from a broad visibility loss.
- Annotate confounders. Put publication dates, removals, redirects, redesigns, outages and tracking changes on the same timeline.
- Keep the data grain consistent. Compare the same property, country, device and search type. Do not mix a web-only baseline with an all-search-types follow-up.
Use a rolling follow-up review rather than replacing the original baseline. A weekly check can show whether the affected URLs stabilize, continue to fall or begin to recover; the original pre-update period remains your reference for the size of the change.
3. Locate the pages and queries that changed
Do not begin by rewriting the whole domain. First find the smallest set of URLs and query groups that explain most of the movement.
- In Performance > Search results, open the Pages tab and compare clicks, impressions, CTR and position.
- Export the pages with the largest absolute and percentage changes. Keep both views: a large page can lose many clicks with a modest percentage change, while a small page can show a dramatic percentage change with little business impact.
- Open each important URL as a filter, then inspect its Queries tab. Group queries by the task or intent they represent, not only by individual wording.
- Repeat the process for directories, templates, authors, languages, countries and device types. A cluster-level pattern is often more actionable than a site-wide average.
- Keep a separate list of pages with increased impressions but lower CTR; those pages may have retained visibility while the result layout, title, snippet or intent match changed.
| Signal | What to inspect | What it can suggest | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impressions and clicks fall together across many templates | Directories, publication dates, search types and policy exposure | A broad visibility or site-pattern change | Audit representative pages from each affected template and query intent |
| Impressions fall for a small URL cluster | Shared author, topic, production process or internal-link pattern | A localized content or practice issue | Compare affected pages with unaffected peers serving the same task |
| Impressions remain similar but clicks fall | CTR, snippets, title wording, device and result type | Search-result presentation or intent mismatch | Check whether the page still answers the query better than competing results |
| Average position changes but clicks do not | Query mix, branded versus non-branded searches and impressions | Aggregation or query-distribution change | Analyze individual query groups before making page edits |
Google’s core-update documentation uses a move from position 2 to 4 as an example of a small change and 4 to 29 as an example of a large one. Those are illustrations, not universal cutoffs. Judge severity in the context of the page’s clicks, intent, conversion value and historical volatility.

4. Compare search types and query intent
Search Console separates Web Search, Images, Video and News. Review these search types independently. A decline in Web Search does not establish that image visibility changed, and a news-heavy site may have a different volatility pattern from an evergreen reference site.
Within each type, classify the affected queries:
- Informational: the reader wants an explanation, definition or procedure.
- Transactional or commercial: the reader is evaluating an option, price or action.
- Navigational: the reader is looking for a particular organization, product or page.
- Freshness-sensitive: the answer depends on a current event, release or policy.
Then ask whether the page’s promise matches the intent today. A page can retain accurate words yet fail because it answers a neighboring question, buries the practical steps, omits a material limitation or presents a dated recommendation for a time-sensitive query.
5. Screen the practices covered by Google’s spam policies
Review the current wording of Google’s spam policies against what the site actually does. Do not infer a violation solely from a date-aligned traffic drop. Examine samples, production logs, linking patterns and ownership relationships so the conclusion is based on practice rather than suspicion.
Scaled content abuse
Look for many pages produced primarily to manipulate rankings without providing useful help. The policy applies whether people, automation or a combination created the pages. Warning signs include near-duplicate pages made from interchangeable terms, automatically assembled text that adds no original information, thin location or comparison pages with no local or product evidence, and publishing volume that the editorial process cannot fact-check.
For each suspected group, ask whether a visitor would receive a distinct answer, evidence or analysis. A large archive is not automatically abusive; the issue is the purpose and usefulness of the pages.
Link spam
Inspect links created primarily to manipulate rankings: purchased or exchanged links intended to pass ranking credit, automated placements, excessive exact-match anchor patterns, or pages whose main purpose is to host such links. Check both links pointing to important pages and links placed on your own site.
Do not assume that removing a link will restore a previous benefit. Google states that, after a link-spam system neutralizes artificial links, the ranking credit those links supplied may not be regained simply by removing them.

Site reputation abuse
Check whether third-party pages are published on an established host mainly to exploit that host’s ranking signals. Review sponsored, partner, coupon, freelance and subdomain arrangements, and ask who controls the editorial decisions, who benefits from the ranking signals and whether the material belongs on the site for its audience.
Recommended Free Tools
A legitimate partnership is not automatically a violation. The audit should document the relationship, the editorial safeguards and the independent value of the pages rather than labeling an entire section by association.
6. Evaluate each affected page as a reader would
Start with the main content, not an arbitrary word count. Google’s people-first guidance asks whether a page provides original information, substantial coverage, useful analysis, clear sourcing, appropriate expertise and a satisfying result for its intended audience.
Originality and added value
- Does the page contain original reporting, research, measurements, examples, comparisons or analysis?
- Does it explain something the reader cannot get by copying the obvious top results?
- If it summarizes another source, does it add context, verification, interpretation or a useful next step?
Completeness and task success
- Can the intended reader complete the task without immediately searching again for a missing prerequisite, caveat or step?
- Are important exceptions, regional differences, version numbers, costs and risks stated where they matter?
- Are headings, tables, examples and instructions organized for scanning rather than padded for length?
Accuracy and sourcing
- Are factual claims supported by links, documents, measurements or named methodology where a reader would reasonably expect evidence?
- Are dates, product versions, laws, prices and compatibility statements current for the stated geography and edition?
- Does the page distinguish observed facts from interpretation and uncertainty?
Experience and presentation
- Does the author demonstrate relevant first-hand experience where the topic requires it?
- Are authorship, review responsibility, update history and conflicts clear enough to establish accountability?
- Can readers use the page on their device without intrusive elements obscuring the answer?
Google recommends examining the pages most affected and the searches for which they were affected. Ask an unaffiliated, trusted reviewer to complete the page’s intended task and note where they hesitate, distrust a claim or need another source. Record the reviewer’s concrete observations rather than a single overall grade.
7. Apply the “Who, How and Why” lens
Use Google’s three questions as an editorial check:
Who created or reviewed it?
Show the responsible author, editor or reviewer and their relevant experience. A credentialed expert is not required for every subject, but the page should not conceal who is accountable for important claims.
How was it created?
Explain the process when that context helps readers judge reliability—for example, whether a test was performed on a stated device, whether data came from a defined sample, or whether an editor verified a source. Do not add a process paragraph merely as decoration.
Why does the page exist?
The primary reason should be to help people who visit the site directly. Google phrases this as creating content “primarily to help people, content that is useful to visitors if they come to your site directly.” A page built mainly to capture search traffic, manufacture links or scale near-duplicates fails this test even if it contains grammatically correct sentences.

E-E-A-T—experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness—is a way to think about these qualities, not a single score or a standalone ranking factor. Google identifies trust as the most important aspect of the concept. Do not assign a numeric E-E-A-T grade or claim that every topic needs all four dimensions equally.

For every affected URL or page group, create one record containing the observed evidence, reader need, suspected issue, proposed change, owner and follow-up date. Prioritize work that improves usefulness and trust for pages with substantial loss and clear defects.
| Observed problem | Evidence to retain | Preferred remediation | Do not substitute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Near-duplicate pages answer the same intent | URL inventory, overlap in queries and repeated passages | Consolidate into a stronger page or give each page a genuinely distinct purpose | Changing titles or adding synonyms to every copy |
| Claims lack support or are outdated | Claim list, publication dates and source checks | Verify, qualify or replace claims; show relevant sources and review responsibility | Changing the date without substantive work |
| Page does not complete the task | Reviewer notes and missing-step examples | Add the necessary procedure, limits, examples or decision criteria | Adding words that do not answer the missing question |
| Third-party section has unclear purpose or control | Contracts, ownership, editorial workflow and sample pages | Rework, restrict or remove material that exists mainly to exploit host signals | Keeping it unchanged because the host domain is authoritative |
| Artificial links are part of the strategy | Link inventory, anchor patterns and acquisition records | Stop manipulative practices and clean up what can be responsibly addressed | Expecting lost link credit to return automatically |
Merge or remove material only when it cannot be improved or serves no defensible audience need. Google calls deletion a last resort. Before removing a URL, check internal links, external references, conversions, accessibility and whether a redirect would create a better destination.
Avoid mass edits based on hearsay, fixed word counts, cosmetic freshness changes or a checklist item that has no connection to the reader’s task. Make one substantive change at a time where practical so the follow-up evidence remains interpretable.
9. Document the audit so decisions are repeatable
A lightweight log prevents teams from rewriting pages repeatedly without learning anything. Use a row for each URL or coherent template group.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Field | What to capture |
|---|---|
| Scope | URL, directory, template, country, device and search type |
| Evidence | Before and after dates, clicks, impressions, CTR, position and affected query groups |
| Context | Update status, rollout dates, site changes, seasonality and other known events |
| Reader task | The question the page is supposed to answer and the intended audience |
| Finding | Specific originality, completeness, accuracy, sourcing, authorship or policy concern |
| Action | Owner, exact edit or decision, completion date and links to supporting evidence |
| Follow-up | Review date, same metrics and same query/page filters used for comparison |
Keep the original export and a version of the page before editing. That record lets you distinguish a real improvement from a change caused by a new query mix or another update.
10. Reassess without promising a recovery date
After making changes, monitor the same pages, query groups and search types rather than relying on a domain-wide average. Check for technical availability, indexing and accidental redirects at the same time, but do not interpret a short-term fluctuation as proof that an edit worked.
Best Value
Google says some changes can take effect in days, while systems may need several months to learn and confirm a site-level pattern of helpful content. It gives no guarantee that a visible improvement will occur. Set review points—for example, an early technical check, a later content check and a longer-term pattern review—without promising a date to stakeholders.
For a link-spam update, distinguish two outcomes: removing manipulative links can reduce ongoing risk, but the ranking benefit those links once appeared to provide may remain unavailable after Google neutralizes them. A return to the old position is therefore not a valid success criterion by itself.

Troubleshooting common audit situations
The whole site fell at once
Confirm that the pattern appears across independent templates, countries and search types. Then sample pages from each major intent and screen for practices shared across the site, such as scaled production or link manipulation. Do not rewrite every page before confirming that a common factor exists.
Only one directory or author group fell
Compare affected pages with unaffected pages that answer the same kind of question. Look for differences in sourcing, review, production workflow, third-party ownership, internal links and query intent. A focused remediation is safer than a domain-wide purge.
Clicks fell but impressions did not
Inspect CTR, titles, snippets, devices and result types. Verify that the query mix did not shift toward searches where the page is a poor match. Improve the answer and its clarity before making a cosmetic title change.
The update is still rolling out
Label the data as provisional, continue collecting exports and avoid declaring a winner or loser. Use the time to verify policy exposure and document page-level issues; make urgent corrections for accuracy, safety or compliance, not speculative ranking tweaks.
No clear policy issue is visible
Do not manufacture one. Recheck alternative causes, including seasonality, technical availability, search-type mix, query intent and competing results. Then use the people-first questions to find practical improvements even when no spam-policy violation is established.
What a sound audit conclusion looks like
A defensible conclusion states what changed, where it changed, which query intents and search types were involved, what evidence supports a likely content or policy issue, what remains uncertain and what action will be reviewed next. It does not claim that proximity to an update proves causation, that a page has failed a hidden score, or that a particular edit guarantees recovery.
The most durable outcome is a site whose pages provide original, well-supported and complete answers, make responsibility clear and exist to help visitors directly. That standard gives editors a basis for decisions even when Google’s systems, update names or result layouts change.
