Before connecting an AI agent to email, files, a calendar, or another account, check what it can read and what it can do—not just whether the connection appears legitimate. Match every requested permission to the task, look for controls on actions and approval prompts, and confirm how to revoke access. The goal is to grant the narrowest access that still lets the agent do its job.
Start with the task and who owns it
Write down what the agent is supposed to do, which account or data it needs, and who is responsible for its activity. For a team workflow, Microsoft recommends a dedicated agent identity with a named owner or sponsor, plus documentation of the purpose, approved data access, tool dependencies, and operating environment (Microsoft Learn: Least privilege for AI agents).

Review the consent screen in plain language
Before approving a connection, check which account is being connected, which app or agent is requesting access, and what data scopes or actions are listed. Translate each permission into a capability: can the agent read, create, edit, send, share, delete, or administer? If a permission label is unclear, consult the account provider’s explanation rather than assuming it is read-only.

Choose the narrowest available scope that still supports the task—for example, access to a specific folder instead of all files, or read-only access instead of permission to edit. Google’s OAuth policy says apps must request the least access to user data necessary for their functionality (Google OAuth 2.0 Policies).
Inspect tools and actions, not only data access
An agent’s tool access determines what it can do with connected data. Check the actions it can invoke after authorization, including extensions or tools that may reach additional systems. OWASP recommends giving agents only the tools they need, scoping permissions per tool—such as read-only versus write—and requiring explicit authorization for sensitive operations (OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet).

Pay particular attention to permissions that allow the agent to send messages, delete records, share data, purchase items, change privileges, or access other people’s resources. Unrestricted or wildcard tool access and unnecessary extensions are reasons to pause and narrow the setup. OWASP’s Excessive Agency guidance, for example, identifies read-only OAuth scopes as a way to reduce an email agent’s ability to take unintended actions (OWASP LLM06:2025 Excessive Agency).
Separate connection permissions from agent approval settings
A provider’s OAuth consent, an agent product’s enabled actions, and its prompts for approval are separate controls. Check each one. A consent screen describes the access being granted; it does not necessarily tell you whether the agent will ask before taking a consequential action later.

In ChatGPT, app availability, action settings, and permission prompts are distinct controls, and some apps do not offer configurable action settings. Review the current options for the specific app and workspace rather than assuming every connection supports the same controls (OpenAI Help Center: Admin controls, security, and compliance for plugins and apps).
Require fresh approval for consequential actions
Where the platform supports it, require confirmation at execution time for actions with external effects or difficult-to-reverse consequences. Microsoft lists sending, deleting, purchasing, deploying, and changing permissions as examples of high-impact actions that can warrant fresh confirmation (Microsoft Learn: Identity, Access, and Least Privilege).

- A FIDO security key with PUF technology provides a unique, hardware-rooted trust anchor that resists tampering and cyber attacks, offering stronger security than conventional designs.
- FIDO2 Certified Protection – Enjoy phishing-resistant security with FIDO2 certification, ensuring top-tier account safety across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS iOS, Android and more.
- Easy to use & Portable – Designed with a compact USB-C interface, Clife key fits easily on your keychain for secure access anywhere. Simply plug in and authenticate with ease.
- Universal Compatibility – Works seamlessly with hundreds of FIDO2/U2F compliant services, including popular cloud, email, and social platforms.
- Backup recommended – To ensure continuous access, register a backup Clife security key as a spare in case your primary key is lost.
Check the approval behavior for the individual action, not just the initial account connection. A one-time authorization should not be mistaken for a per-action confirmation.

- Identity: Prefer an agent identity that can be distinguished from a shared human login or generic account, with a named owner who is accountable for its use.
- Logs: Find out whether activity can be traced to the agent identity and whether records show the scope, action, resource, and resulting change.
- Duration: Where available, prefer authorization that lasts only as long as the workflow requires. Microsoft recommends binding permissions to the initiating principal and task, using minimum scope, and issuing access for the shortest practical duration.
- Revocation: Locate the provider’s control for removing the app’s access and the agent product’s control for disabling or disconnecting it. Verify whether revocation invalidates active credentials or tokens; available procedures vary by service.
Microsoft recommends reviewing effective permissions across roles, tools, and downstream systems, logging activity, testing disablement and token invalidation, and removing stale permissions (Microsoft Learn: Least privilege for AI agents). Google notes that access can end through user revocation, token purge, or token expiration (Google OAuth 2.0 Policies). Look for the current app-access or connected-apps page in the account provider’s settings; there is no single revocation path shared by all services.

Compare agent connections using the same checks
If you have more than one agent or connection option, compare them on the criteria that determine practical risk. Control availability depends on the agent, provider, account type, and workspace settings.
| Check | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Data scope | Which accounts, files, folders, mailboxes, or other resources are reachable? |
| Action scope | Is access read-only, or can the agent create, edit, send, delete, or administer? Can individual tools or actions be narrowed? |
| Identity and accountability | Is there a distinct agent identity, named owner, and traceable activity, or does the workflow rely on shared credentials or unclear ownership? |
| Approval behavior | Which actions need fresh approval, especially irreversible or externally visible ones? |
| Duration and revocation | How long does authorization last? Can you disable the agent, and does revocation invalidate active credentials? |
| Auditability | Do logs show which identity acted, on which resource, under what scope, and what changed? |
Repeat the audit when the setup changes
Recheck access when the agent’s task, integrations, data scope, or operating environment changes. In ChatGPT’s app controls, disabling new actions applies to actions introduced later; it does not turn off actions already enabled. Inspect the enabled-action list and disable anything no longer needed (OpenAI Help Center: Admin controls, security, and compliance for plugins and apps).
