Do not treat AI-generated reverse-engineered code as recovered source or as proof of how a program works. Treat it as an analytical hypothesis. A defensible audit identifies the exact binary and execution context, preserves the reconstruction and its evidence, has an independent qualified engineer review the result, compares security-relevant behavior with the executable, and uses several testing methods selected from a threat model. Only then should findings be fixed, retested, and signed off.
NIST defines decompilation as an attempt to recreate source code from compiled instructions. The NSA describes Ghidra as a framework for analyzing compiled software. Both support analysis, but neither transformation establishes source equivalence, complete control-flow recovery, or security. The process below is designed for decompiler output, AI-written pseudocode, and new implementations based on observed behavior.

First, define what you are auditing
The phrase “AI-generated reverse-engineered code” can describe materially different artifacts. Write down which one is in scope before anyone runs a scanner:
- Decompiler output: source-like text produced from machine code. Names, types, comments, structure, and error paths may be inferred.
- AI-generated pseudocode or explanation: an analyst asks a model to interpret disassembly, traces, or decompiler output.
- Manual reconstruction: an engineer rewrites an implementation from observed behavior.
- Reimplementation: new production code intended to match the behavior of an existing executable.
These artifacts have different evidentiary value. A disassembler converts binary instructions to assembly; a decompiler attempts to recreate source. An AI interpretation adds another layer of inference. Label every conclusion as an observation from the binary, a behavior reproduced at runtime, or an interpretation that still needs confirmation.

Do not claim that reconstructed code is the original source unless equivalence has been established for the specific security property under review. A missing bounds check in the reconstruction may be a real defect, an artifact of incorrect types, or an omitted path. Conversely, code that looks safe may hide behavior the model failed to recover.
Preserve an auditable evidence chain
Another engineer should be able to start with your finding and trace it back to the exact artifact and observation. Create a case record before analysis changes the evidence.
Record the target
- Executable, firmware image, library, container, or package name.
- Cryptographic hash of every original file and any unpacked component.
- Version, build identifier, release date, architecture, operating system, and execution mode, when known.
- Input files, command-line arguments, configuration, environment variables, network endpoints, and privileges used during observation.
- Whether the sample is production software, a debug build, a patched copy, or an unknown variant.
Record the reconstruction
- Decompiler, disassembler, debugger, emulator, and AI model names and versions.
- Prompts, pasted snippets, tool settings, scripts, and generated output, subject to your organization’s confidentiality policy.
- Every analyst edit, renamed symbol, inferred type, removed block, and manually added check.
- Links between reconstructed functions and binary addresses, traces, screenshots, or instruction ranges.
- Hash or immutable storage reference for each analysis package.
This evidence template is a practical control derived from secure-development and verification practices; it is not a guarantee that the reconstruction is complete. If policy prevents storing prompts or proprietary code, record a redacted prompt identifier and the transformation performed instead.

Build a threat model before choosing tests
Scanning first encourages a tool-driven audit that misses design flaws. Model the system’s security boundaries and use the model to decide what evidence is necessary.
Map trust and privilege
- List untrusted inputs: files, network messages, IPC, command-line arguments, environment variables, plug-ins, update packages, and serialized objects.
- Mark trust boundaries between users, services, processes, kernels, devices, and administrative interfaces.
- Record identities, roles, tokens, capabilities, set-user-ID behavior, service accounts, and operating-system privileges.
- Identify sensitive data and security decisions: credentials, keys, personal data, authorization results, update validation, and audit records.
- Document network listeners, outbound connections, local sockets, parsers, interpreters, process creation, file writes, and loading of dynamic code.
Prioritize security-critical behavior
NIST IR 8397 lists threat modeling among broadly applicable verification techniques. Use it to prioritize authentication and authorization, cryptography and key handling, memory safety, parsing, path and file operations, command execution, deserialization, update logic, and privileged interfaces. A small utility with no network access may need deep parser and memory testing; a service handling account permissions needs stronger authorization and session analysis.
Write explicit abuse cases. Examples include a low-privilege user supplying a path that reaches an administrator-only file, a malformed packet causing a parser to read past a buffer, a forged update being accepted, or a secret appearing in diagnostic output. Each abuse case should map to a function, input, expected control, and test.
Use independent human review
OWASP AISVS 1.0 Appendix C requires AI-generated code to receive review by a qualified human engineer and says the reviewer should not be the same identity that requested generation. The AI agent itself does not count as that reviewer. Apply your organization’s heightened-review policy to security-critical changes.

What the reviewer should challenge
- Missing checks: Are length, range, encoding, signature, freshness, and error-return checks present on every path?
- Trust assumptions: Does the code treat a client field, local file, plugin, or IPC peer as trusted without proof?
- Authorization: Is permission checked at the operation that uses the resource, not only at an earlier entry point?
- Failure behavior: Do errors fail closed, preserve transactional state, and avoid leaking secrets or internal paths?
- Concurrency: Can a check-then-use sequence, shared cache, or cleanup race bypass the intended control?
- Cryptography: Are algorithms, modes, nonce handling, key storage, verification order, and downgrade behavior actually supported by observed code?
- Reconstruction gaps: Are indirect calls, exception handlers, callbacks, assembly routines, inline code, and platform-specific branches represented?
Have the reviewer mark each conclusion as confirmed, probable, unresolved, or contradicted by runtime evidence. That vocabulary prevents an attractive AI explanation from becoming an unqualified fact.
Run a layered verification plan
No single scanner can establish that reconstructed code is safe. NIST IR 8397 recommends combining techniques, including threat modeling, automated and structural tests, static analysis, secret detection, built-in protection checks, historical tests, fuzzing, web scanners where applicable, and review of included code such as libraries and services. OWASP AISVS also lists SAST, IAST, DAST, secret scanning, infrastructure-as-code scanning, and software composition analysis for pull requests containing AI-generated code.
Static analysis and source-level checks
Run a language-appropriate SAST tool on the reconstruction or reimplementation, with rules for injection, path traversal, unsafe memory operations, command execution, deserialization, access control, and cryptographic misuse. Treat results as leads. A finding is not confirmed until the relevant path and runtime conditions are understood; a clean report is not evidence that omitted binary behavior is safe.
Secrets and configuration
Use heuristic secret detection on source, build files, scripts, logs, test fixtures, and generated documentation. Search for keys, passwords, tokens, private certificates, hardcoded endpoints, debug switches, and fallback credentials. Validate whether a suspicious string is an actual credential, a test value, or an unrelated constant, then rotate exposed credentials according to incident policy.
Dependencies and included code
Inventory libraries, packages, firmware components, services, containers, and dynamically loaded modules. Resolve versions and verify provenance where possible. Review transitive dependencies and bundled copies; reconstructed code can conceal a vulnerable component simply because the original build metadata is absent. Software composition analysis is useful for the reimplementation, but it cannot identify a dependency that the reconstruction failed to represent.
Runtime and dynamic testing
Use black-box tests against the original executable and structural tests against the reconstruction. Add instrumentation, tracing, or a debugger where safe. Dynamic application testing and interactive analysis can expose behavior that static inference misses, such as authorization checks performed in a shared library or a parser branch activated only by a specific state.
Fuzzing and boundary tests
Fuzz parsers, protocol handlers, archive readers, image decoders, command interpreters, and other attack surfaces identified in the threat model. Include malformed lengths, truncated messages, duplicate fields, invalid encodings, extreme nesting, integer overflows, decompression limits, and unexpected state transitions. Capture crashes, hangs, excessive resource use, memory-safety reports, and differences between the executable and reconstruction.

Web and infrastructure checks
Use web application scanners only when the target exposes a web application, API, or browser-facing surface. Use infrastructure-as-code scanning for deployment definitions, permissions, network rules, secrets, and unsafe defaults. Do not apply a tool merely because it is available; record why it covers a threat in this system.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compare the reconstruction with the executable
Behavioral comparison is the central control against confident but incorrect AI output. It does not require proving total equivalence. It requires testing the properties that matter to security.
Design differential tests
- Select an observable function or interface and define its input, state, identity, environment, and expected security outcome.
- Run the same case against the original executable and the reconstruction, keeping versions and configuration fixed.
- Compare return values, output bytes, state changes, files, network requests, logs, timing-sensitive authorization outcomes, and resource limits as appropriate.
- Investigate every difference. Classify it as an expected platform or implementation difference, a reconstruction error, or a potentially security-relevant divergence.
- Promote confirmed differences into regression tests and preserve the original evidence.
Derive cases from observed behavior, specifications, historical defects, threat scenarios, and boundary conditions. Do not rely solely on tests generated by the same AI that produced the code. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet specifically warns that AI-generated test suites are not independent security evidence and says AI-generated test modifications require review.
Check paths that are easy to lose
- Exception and signal handlers.
- Callbacks, virtual dispatch, function pointers, and dynamically resolved symbols.
- Assembly stubs, compiler-generated checks, macros, and inline functions.
- Startup, shutdown, rollback, and recovery paths.
- Feature flags, locale or architecture branches, and administrator-only modes.
- Timeout, retry, cache invalidation, and rate-limit behavior.
A reconstruction that matches normal inputs but diverges on an error path can still introduce a serious vulnerability.
Evaluate common vulnerability classes
Memory and resource safety
Trace every externally influenced length, index, pointer, allocation, copy, conversion, and arithmetic operation. Check integer truncation, signedness changes, null handling, lifetime, double release, use-after-free, race conditions, decompression bombs, recursion depth, and unbounded queues. Confirm whether protections such as stack canaries, address randomization, control-flow integrity, sandboxing, or hardened allocators are actually enabled in the deployed artifact.
Recommended Free Tools
Input handling and injection
Follow data from each trust boundary to SQL, shell, template, regular-expression, path, XML, archive, scripting, and interpreter operations. Verify canonicalization order, encoding rules, allowlists, size limits, and parser differentials. A model may describe a sanitizer that is absent on one branch or ineffective for a different encoding.
Authentication and authorization
Identify where identity is established, how sessions or tokens are validated, and where each sensitive operation checks permission. Test missing, expired, duplicated, malformed, and downgraded credentials. Look for confused-deputy behavior in services that act with greater privilege than the caller, and for alternate interfaces that bypass the main authorization path.

Cryptography and secrets
Confirm algorithm selection, key generation, storage, rotation, certificate validation, nonce uniqueness, signature coverage, and failure handling against the observed implementation. Never infer secure cryptography merely from names such as “encrypt” or “verify.” Check whether debug logs, crash dumps, command lines, environment variables, and temporary files expose secrets.
Updates and supply-chain trust
Trace package discovery, signature verification, rollback protection, version checks, transport security, and privilege changes during updates. Verify that verification occurs before installation and that failures cannot leave a partially trusted state. Scan model or model-related components for malware, vulnerabilities, backdoors, and other issues when they are within scope, following organizational policy.

The NSA describes Ghidra as a reverse-engineering framework with disassembly, assembly, decompilation, graphing, and scripting across multiple platforms. The project warns that certain versions have known vulnerabilities and directs users to its security advisories. Keep analysis tools isolated where practical, restrict untrusted files and scripts, patch tools according to current advisories, and record exact versions so another reviewer can reproduce results.
Do not open a hostile sample in a privileged workstation merely because it is being analyzed. Use a controlled environment, limit network access, separate secrets, and preserve the original sample read-only. Tool isolation reduces analyst risk; it does not make the target trustworthy.
Triage findings and verify remediation
Use the organization’s normal severity policy rather than inventing a special AI scale. For each issue, record the affected artifact and version, vulnerable path, preconditions, impact, evidence, confidence level, owner, deadline, and recommended remediation.
Separate evidence from interpretation
- Confirmed: reproduced in the executable or reconstruction under documented conditions.
- Probable: supported by code and traces but not fully reproduced.
- Unresolved: dependent on missing symbols, unavailable environment, or an untested branch.
- False positive: contradicted by complete evidence, with the reason retained.
NIST SSDF frames code review and analysis as ways to identify vulnerabilities before release and recommends recording and triaging issues. NIST SP 800-218A, published in July 2024, extends related review and analysis practices to AI and dual-use foundation-model components. Apply model-specific scanning recommendations only when models or model components are actually in scope; do not call an ordinary generated application file a model.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Retest the fix
- Apply the remediation in the maintained source or reimplementation, not only in an analyst’s temporary reconstruction.
- Re-run the reproducer and the relevant differential, static, dependency, secret, and fuzz tests.
- Compare the patched executable with the intended security behavior, including failure and rollback paths.
- Have a reviewer independent of the original generator confirm that the fix closes the issue without weakening another control.
- Attach results, tool versions, configurations, and residual limitations to the finding before closure.
Choose an audit approach by evidence and independence
| Approach | Primary evidence | Strength | Typical blind spot | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decompiler and AI-assisted static review | Binary instructions, inferred control flow, reconstructed source | Explains complex routines and creates reviewable hypotheses | Wrong types, omitted paths, and confident misinterpretation | Prioritizing functions and forming testable questions |
| Independent human code review | Source, reconstruction notes, threat model, and findings | Challenges assumptions and business-logic errors | Reviewer may lack runtime evidence or platform expertise | Security-critical decisions and sign-off |
| Static, secret, dependency, and IaC scanning | Rules, patterns, inventories, and configuration | Repeatable coverage of known issue classes | False positives, unknown flaws, and missing reconstructed code | Pull-request and build gates |
| Dynamic, differential, and fuzz testing | Observed execution, crashes, outputs, and state changes | Confirms behavior under concrete inputs | Untested states and environment-dependent paths | Parser, protocol, authorization, and regression validation |
| Threat modeling | Trust boundaries, assets, abuse cases, and assumptions | Finds design-level weaknesses scanners miss | Requires accurate system context | Choosing tests and prioritizing remediation |
Evaluate every approach on coverage, reviewer and test-author independence, reproducibility, and operational fit. A tool that blocks a severe finding is useful only if someone owns triage and exceptions; a sophisticated analysis that cannot be repeated is weak evidence.

Common audit failures and corrections
“The decompiler output looks reasonable, so it is safe.”
Reasonable-looking names and control flow are presentation, not proof. Tie claims to instruction ranges, traces, and differential tests.
“A scanner found nothing.”
Silence means only that the configured rules did not report a match. Review untested code, unresolved calls, binary-only components, and threat-model abuse cases.
“The AI wrote tests for every function.”
Generated tests may repeat the model’s assumptions and omit adversarial cases. Have a human derive independent tests from threats, observed behavior, and historical failures.
“We fixed the reconstructed source.”
Unless the maintained build uses that fix, the shipped executable may remain vulnerable. Trace the fix into the release artifact and rerun the original reproducer.
“The analysis tool is trusted.”
Reverse-engineering tools process hostile input and can have vulnerabilities themselves. Patch them, isolate them, and consult current project advisories.
Release-gate checklist
- Target hash, version, architecture, platform, and execution context are recorded.
- Original artifact, reconstruction, prompts or redacted transformation records, and analyst changes are retained.
- Threat model identifies assets, trust boundaries, privileges, inputs, and abuse cases.
- Qualified human review is independent of the code-generation identity.
- Static analysis, secret detection, dependency review, and applicable IaC or web checks are complete.
- Behavioral tests compare security-relevant outcomes with the executable where feasible.
- Fuzzing or boundary testing covers the highest-risk parsers and interfaces.
- AI-generated tests and modifications have been independently reviewed.
- Findings are classified, assigned, remediated, and retested with evidence.
- Tool versions, configurations, false positives, untested areas, and residual uncertainty are documented.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
A sound audit does not say “the AI recovered the source and no vulnerabilities exist.” It says which artifact and behavior were examined, which security properties were confirmed, which paths remain uncertain, what testing was performed, what findings were fixed, and what limitations prevent broader claims. That level of precision lets another engineer challenge the result and gives maintainers a repeatable basis for future releases.
