How to Audit AI-Generated Code for Software Supply-Chain Risks

Audit AI-generated code as an untrusted software change, not as a special exemption and not as an automatic security failure. Keep a traceable record of what changed and how it was generated, review the design and implementation, inspect dependencies and permissions, run repeatable security checks, verify the final build, and require an accountable human approval before merge or release. This approach follows the same secure-development discipline used for human-written code while adding controls for AI-specific provenance, prompt context, and agent behavior.

AI assistance does not by itself prove that code is vulnerable. It does make authorship and context easier to lose, and it can introduce dependencies, insecure defaults, excessive permissions, or unexpected files at machine speed. The objective is therefore evidence: can you explain the change, identify every component it uses, show that it passed the required gates, and connect the approved source to the artifact you will ship?

What an AI-code supply-chain audit must establish

A useful audit answers four separate questions. Keeping them separate prevents a clean static-analysis report from being mistaken for proof that the release is safe.

  • Is the change secure by design and implementation? Check data flows, authentication, authorization, input handling, error behavior, logging, secrets, and security-sensitive defaults.
  • What components does it rely on? Identify direct and transitive packages, base images, actions, plugins, generated configuration, and any downloaded or bundled code.
  • Can you prove where those components came from and what reached the product? Use integrity information, an appropriate software bill of materials (SBOM), provenance records, and analysis of the delivered artifact.
  • Was the decision made by an accountable person? Retain peer review, security validation, automated test results, findings, remediation or risk acceptance, and release approval.

NIST’s DevSecOps reference model says AI-generated outputs should be traceable to their source context, logged, reviewed through established software-development gates, and approved by accountable stakeholders. NIST’s Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) community profile for generative AI and dual-use foundation models, SP 800-218A (July 2024), adds AI-relevant practices to the general framework. The controls below apply to ordinary applications and services; model-training and data-pipeline controls from that profile belong in scope only when the system actually includes them.

1. Define scope and preserve enough context to investigate

Start by marking the exact change under review. Include more than application source: AI assistance may have materially changed tests, infrastructure-as-code, deployment manifests, configuration, package manifests, lockfiles, container recipes, or CI workflows.

Identify the change and its owner

  • Record the repository, branch or revision, pull request, affected files, and intended release.
  • Name the engineer or team accountable for the change and the person authorized to approve it.
  • Classify whether the output was generated wholesale, edited from a generated draft, or merely assisted by completion or refactoring. Your policy can define the threshold for recording assistance.
  • State the security and functional requirements the change is supposed to satisfy. A reviewer cannot test an unstated assumption.

Preserve provenance without treating prompts as proof

Where policy and privacy rules permit, retain the tool or model identifier, relevant prompt and context, repository revision supplied to the tool, generated files, and significant human edits. Record the date and the identity of the person who accepted or modified the output. This information is audit context, not a correctness certificate. A prompt transcript cannot demonstrate that the code handles production inputs safely, uses the intended package, or matches the artifact eventually deployed.

Include supplier and data-leakage questions

If a contractor, platform, or other supplier used AI coding tools, ask how it governs generated code, how it assesses the security impact, and how it periodically reviews possible data leakage from those tools. CISA’s Software Acquisition Guide for Government Enterprise Consumers (July 2024) frames these as procurement questions for government enterprise consumers. It is useful as a checklist, not a universal legal mandate. Adapt the questions to your contract, jurisdiction, and risk classification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Review behavior, architecture, and threats

Reading a generated function line by line is necessary but insufficient. Review the change against the system’s architecture and abuse cases, then verify the implementation with tests and analysis.

Walk the security-sensitive paths

  • Data flows: Trace untrusted input from the network, files, queues, webhooks, or user interfaces to parsers, interpreters, database queries, templates, and outbound requests.
  • Identity and authorization: Confirm authentication happens before sensitive operations, authorization is checked for the resource being accessed, and failures do not fall back to a broader identity or role.
  • Validation and encoding: Check type, length, format, range, and canonicalization rules at trust boundaries. Ensure output is encoded for its destination rather than merely filtered with a brittle blacklist.
  • Errors and logging: Make sure errors fail safely, do not disclose secrets or personal data, and provide enough structured information for detection and investigation.
  • Secrets and cryptography: Look for embedded keys, tokens, credentials, weak algorithms, hard-coded salts, unsafe random-number generation, and accidental logging of secret material.
  • Defaults and failure modes: Test what happens when a dependency is unavailable, a permission is denied, a certificate is invalid, a timeout occurs, or an input is unexpectedly large.

Question the assumptions

Generated code often satisfies the example in its prompt while silently assuming a particular framework version, deployment topology, character encoding, clock, operating system, or trust boundary. Ask the author to state each assumption and then check it against production. A function that is safe only when called by a trusted internal service is not safe if a route later exposes it to the internet.

Use threat modeling proportionately

NIST SP 800-218A recommends security risk modeling and says relevant AI-model threats should be incorporated where applicable. For an ordinary web service that uses an AI assistant only during development, model the service’s actual threats; do not paste every model-training threat into an unrelated application. For a system that operates an AI model or agent, consider malicious code or unwanted content in inputs and outputs, unauthorized information disclosure, denial of service from adversarial prompts, supply-chain attacks, and misconfigured data pipelines.

3. Audit dependencies and component integrity

AI-generated code can add a package in one line, alter a version constraint, or copy a snippet whose import name resembles a trusted component. Dependency review must cover both what the source declares and what the build actually includes.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect manifests and lockfiles

  1. Diff every package manifest and lockfile against the approved base revision.
  2. List new and changed direct dependencies, then expand the list to transitive components resolved by the package manager.
  3. Confirm the exact package identity, registry or repository, version, integrity hash where supported, license and maintenance context, and the reason the component is needed.
  4. Check whether a similarly named package, untrusted mirror, or unexpected repository has been introduced.
  5. Review install and build scripts for commands that execute with network, filesystem, or credential access.

Software composition analysis (SCA) can identify known vulnerabilities in open-source components and their relationships. It does not establish that a package is trustworthy, that its maintainer still supports it, or that the final binary contains only the components shown in a source manifest.

Use secure acquisition and vetted sources

Resolve dependencies through approved repositories and secure acquisition channels. Pin versions or immutable digests where the project’s update policy permits, verify signatures or checksums that the ecosystem supports, and document exceptions. A pin reduces surprise changes; it does not remove the need to update a vulnerable component or inspect its release provenance.

Supplement source analysis with binary analysis

NIST’s open-source supply-chain guidance recommends binary composition analysis as a supplement to source-level analysis. Analyze supplied binaries, container images, installers, or other release artifacts to discover components that were introduced during compilation, packaging, or image assembly and to verify what the customer will actually receive. Source SCA and binary composition analysis answer different questions: one examines declared and resolved source dependencies, while the other checks delivered contents.

4. Check generated configuration, infrastructure, and permissions

AI assistance frequently changes YAML, policy files, Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code, CI definitions, Dockerfiles, and deployment settings. These files can create a supply-chain path even when application code is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review privilege and reach

  • Compare every new cloud role, service account, token scope, filesystem permission, and network egress rule with the task’s minimum requirement.
  • Check whether a build job can publish artifacts, alter releases, read production secrets, or modify repository settings when it only needs to compile and test.
  • Confirm that containers run as a non-root user where feasible, use restricted capabilities, and do not mount sensitive host paths without a documented reason.
  • Inspect CI actions, plugins, and downloaded tools for version pinning, trust, and permission scope.
  • Ensure secrets are injected through the approved secret-management mechanism rather than written to source, images, logs, or generated test fixtures.

The NIST DevSecOps reference model warns about excessive privileges for AI agents and about AI-generated artifacts entering a supply chain without provenance or approval. The UK Code of Practice for the Cyber Security of AI is voluntary guidance, but its recommendations on audit trails, external-component risk assessment, testing, and limited permissions are useful when an AI system interacts with other systems.

Separate generation from deployment

Generated output should not independently deploy or modify production. An agent may prepare a pull request or a build, but a controlled workflow should require review, tests, and explicit approval before a production mutation. Corrective actions found by automated or AI-assisted checks should likewise create a reviewed change rather than silently rewriting software or system state.

5. Run automation, then apply qualified human judgment

Automation makes checks repeatable; it does not understand every business rule or deployment assumption. Run the project’s normal gates and make their results part of the review record.

Minimum automated set

  • Clean, reproducible build from the proposed revision.
  • Unit, integration, and relevant end-to-end tests.
  • Static security analysis and linting appropriate to the languages and frameworks.
  • SCA for direct and transitive dependencies, with vulnerability severity and reachability considered rather than copied blindly.
  • Secret scanning across source, history where appropriate, generated files, and build logs.
  • Infrastructure, policy, container, and configuration checks for the deployment targets involved.
  • Artifact or binary composition analysis when the product includes supplied binaries, images, or packaged components.

Record tool versions, rulesets, target revision, findings, and suppressions. A green result means the checked rules found no issue; it is not an automatic security verdict. Review false positives, false negatives, excluded paths, unavailable vulnerability data, and any scan that did not run on the final artifact.

Require an independent reviewer

SP 800-218A recommends review by a qualified person independent of the design, supported by automated processes. Independence can be scaled to risk: a peer outside the implementation pair may review a low-risk library change, while a security engineer or designated architecture reviewer should examine authentication, cryptography, privilege, or release-pipeline changes. The reviewer should be able to reject the change and should see the requirements, threat model, dependency evidence, test results, and provenance record.

6. Verify the release artifact and preserve evidence

Pre-merge checks show that a proposed revision passed gates. Release checks must show that the approved revision produced the artifact you intend to distribute.

Connect source to artifact

  1. Build from the reviewed, immutable revision in a controlled environment.
  2. Record the build inputs, builder identity, relevant configuration, dependency resolutions, and output digest.
  3. Scan the exact image, binary, package, or installer that will be released.
  4. Compare the artifact’s component inventory with the approved dependency and SBOM records.
  5. Block release when the artifact differs from the reviewed output, contains an unexplained component, or lacks required evidence.

Maintain provenance and an SBOM

SP 800-218A states: “Collect, safeguard, maintain, and share provenance data for all components of each software release (e.g., in a software bill of materials [SBOM], through Supply-chain Levels for Software Artifacts [SLSA]).” An SBOM describes components and relationships; provenance evidence describes how and where an artifact was produced. Neither replaces vulnerability management, code review, or access control, but together they make investigation and customer communication faster.

Retain a decision record

Keep the pull request and approvals, relevant generation context, test and scan results, SBOM or component inventory, artifact digest, findings, remediation, accepted residual risk, and final release owner. Record why an exception was accepted, its expiration or review date, and the compensating control. Evidence should be available to incident responders and auditors without requiring access to a private prompt transcript that may contain sensitive data.

7. Make disposition explicit

Every finding needs a visible outcome. Mark it as remediated, deferred with an owner and deadline, accepted residual risk with an accountable approver, or blocked pending more information. Do not allow an AI-generated pull request to merge merely because the author cannot reproduce the issue or because a scanner reports no known vulnerability.

When to block

  • Unexplained package, binary, repository, or build-script changes.
  • Missing provenance for a high-impact component or inability to identify the delivered artifact.
  • New privilege, secret exposure, or network access without an approved need.
  • Failed security tests, unresolved critical findings, or a material mismatch between reviewed source and release output.
  • Human approval missing from a change that policy classifies as security-sensitive.

When a conditional release may be reasonable

A lower-risk issue may be released only when the organization’s policy allows it, the risk is documented, a named owner accepts it, compensating controls are in place, and a remediation date is tracked. “The model generated it” is not a risk treatment and should never be the sole reason for acceptance or rejection.

Choosing controls by the evidence they inspect

Teams often ask which single tool can audit AI-generated code. No single control covers the full path from prompt to product. Select a combination based on the evidence you need.

Control or evidence Primary question answered Important limitation
Peer and independent security review Does the design and implementation meet requirements in its operating context? Quality depends on reviewer expertise and the evidence provided.
Static security analysis Does source contain patterns associated with coding defects or vulnerabilities? It can miss business-logic flaws and environment-dependent behavior.
SCA Do declared or resolved open-source components have known vulnerabilities? It does not prove provenance, maintainer trust, or final artifact contents.
Binary composition analysis Which components are present in a supplied binary, image, or package? It supplements rather than replaces source and dependency review.
SBOM What components and relationships are recorded for a release? An inventory alone does not prove that components are safe or untampered.
Build provenance or SLSA-related evidence How was the artifact produced, from which inputs, and by which builder? It must be protected and tied to the exact released digest.
Secret and configuration scanning Did the change expose credentials or unsafe deployment settings? Rules need tuning and should be paired with permissions review.

Common failure modes and recovery steps

“The tests pass, so the code is safe.”

Tests demonstrate the cases they cover. Add threat-focused tests for authorization boundaries, malformed input, failure handling, rate limits, and secret exposure; then review the architecture and dependency evidence separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The prompt explains what the code does.”

Prompts are often incomplete, mutable, or unavailable to the person operating the system. Preserve useful context, but derive the acceptance criteria from requirements, inspect the implementation, and test the deployed behavior.

“The package name looks familiar.”

Verify the exact registry identity, version, integrity data, maintainer context, and transitive tree. Remove or replace a component that cannot be justified, and rebuild from a clean environment.

“The source scan is clean, but the image is different.”

Stop release, compare build inputs and digests, run binary or image composition analysis, inspect packaging scripts and base-image changes, and regenerate the SBOM. Do not approve an unexplained artifact delta.

“The scanner has too many findings.”

Classify findings by exploitability, reachability, asset exposure, and severity. Fix genuine defects, document accepted residual risk, tune rules only with a reviewable rationale, and never suppress an entire path merely because generated code produces noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The AI agent needs broad access to finish the task.”

Reduce permissions to the smallest set needed for the current stage, isolate generation from deployment credentials, and require human approval for changes to repositories, releases, production systems, or security policy. Log agent actions so an incident can be reconstructed.

Practical audit checklist

  • Scope includes source, tests, infrastructure, configuration, manifests, lockfiles, images, and release packaging.
  • Owner, approver, revision, intended release, and security requirements are recorded.
  • Permitted provenance context is retained without storing sensitive prompts unnecessarily.
  • Data flows, identity, authorization, validation, errors, logging, secrets, cryptography, and defaults were reviewed.
  • AI-specific threats were considered only where the system actually uses AI models or agents.
  • Direct and transitive dependencies, registries, integrity data, build scripts, and known vulnerabilities were checked.
  • New permissions, secrets, network access, CI actions, and infrastructure changes passed least-privilege review.
  • Build, tests, static analysis, SCA, secret scanning, and applicable configuration or artifact checks completed.
  • A qualified reviewer independent of the implementation approved the change.
  • The exact release artifact was scanned, matched to the reviewed revision, and inventoried.
  • Provenance, SBOM or equivalent component evidence, approvals, findings, and disposition are retained.
  • No AI-generated output can independently deploy, alter production, or silently rewrite corrective changes.

Which guidance applies to your organization?

NIST SP 800-218A, issued in July 2024, is an SSDF community profile for generative AI and dual-use foundation-model development. Use its AI-model and training-data practices when those systems are in scope, and use its software-development practices more broadly for AI-assisted application work. NIST’s software supply-chain guidance addresses acquisition, use, and maintenance of third-party software; the related page was updated November 1, 2024. NIST’s open-source controls specifically support secure acquisition, vetted repositories, automated collection and scanning, source composition analysis, and binary composition analysis.

CISA’s July 2024 acquisition guide is aimed at government enterprise consumers and supplies questions for evaluating suppliers that use AI-generated code. The UK Code of Practice for the Cyber Security of AI is voluntary guidance for AI systems and lifecycle security. Neither document should be presented as a binding rule in every jurisdiction. Your contracts, regulatory obligations, risk appetite, and internal SDLC policy determine which controls are mandatory.

The audit verdict

Approve AI-generated code only when it is explainable, tested, component-aware, provenance-backed, and accepted by an accountable human. The strongest control is not a special “AI scanner.” It is a connected chain of evidence: traceable change context, security and threat review, dependency and permission checks, automated validation, independent judgment, and a reproducible link from reviewed source to released artifact. That chain treats AI assistance as a reason for better visibility and discipline, not as a substitute for either.
