How to attract bogong moths and other night-flying insects to your garden without harming them

The safest way to welcome Bogong moths and other nocturnal insects is to make your garden useful and dark, not to bait it with bright lights. Grow locally appropriate native flowers, include night-blooming species where they suit your climate, switch off unnecessary outdoor lighting, avoid insecticides and let visiting moths rest undisturbed. During a Bogong moth’s migration seasons, you can also record a photograph through Zoos Victoria’s Moth Tracker.

A garden cannot summon moths on demand or redirect their migration. Plant recommendations vary by region, and artificial light can harm nocturnal wildlife, so the goal is a low-disturbance stopover rather than a moth trap.

What Bogong moths are doing in your garden

The Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa) is a native Australian migrant found across southern Australia, including Tasmania. The Australian Museum describes adults moving from inland breeding areas toward cool, high-altitude regions in spring. They spend summer in a resting state called aestivation in alpine areas, then return inland in autumn to breed. Their larvae, commonly called black cutworms, feed on seedlings of wide-leafed plants in inland areas.

Adults may pass through urban gardens, forests and woodlands. They can also be drawn toward artificial lights, which is why a brightly lit yard may receive moths while still making conditions worse for them. Attraction is not the same as support: a light can pull an insect into danger, expose it to predators or exhaust it before it reaches suitable habitat.

Zoos Victoria identifies two broad Bogong migration windows as September–December and February–April. These are useful periods for reducing disturbance and watching for moths, but weather, local conditions and annual population changes mean that an exact arrival date cannot be guaranteed.

Why careful support matters

Alpine Resorts Victoria reports a 99.5% decline in Bogong moth numbers between 2018 and 2021 and says the species was added to the IUCN Red List as endangered in 2021. The 99.5% figure is an attributed report about that 2018–2021 period, not a new measurement of every population today. It is nevertheless a strong reason to avoid practices that add pressure to migrating moths.

“Bogong moths are harmless to people and pets.” Georges River Council published that advice on 7 October 2026. Normal handling is unnecessary, but a moth that has entered a house can be guided out without spraying or crushing it.

Four principles for a moth-safe garden

  • Provide food plants rather than a light lure. Use a diverse selection of native flowers suited to your locality. Flowers that open or remain accessible at night can support moths and other nocturnal pollinators.
  • Keep habitat dark. Turn off outdoor lights when they are not needed, especially during the September–December and February–April periods reported by Zoos Victoria. Do not install a bright lamp to attract moths.
  • Remove chemical hazards. Avoid insecticides in areas used by moths. Never spray a moth that has landed on a wall, plant or window.
  • Minimise handling. Leave a resting moth alone whenever possible. If one is inside, use a gentle, controlled release method instead of chasing it.

The Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water describes several effects of artificial light on pollinators: it can distract, repel or kill them, reduce pollen transport, alter predator–prey interactions and fragment nocturnal habitat. A dark garden is therefore not an absence of design; it is a useful habitat feature.

Choose plants by region, not by a universal list

Plant choice is the part of this project that most needs local judgement. Soil, rainfall, frost, altitude and local plant availability differ widely across Australia. Prefer species that are native to your area, and use local-provenance plants where a reputable native nursery can supply them. A plant that suits the Victorian Alps may fail in a subtropical coastal yard, while a Queensland recommendation may not tolerate an alpine winter.

Plant or group What the guidance says How to apply it responsibly
Correa Alpine Resorts Victoria lists Correa among native alpine flowers that attract Bogong moths. Check which Correa species and forms are suited to your soil, exposure and elevation. Choose local provenance where available.
Eucalypts Alpine Resorts Victoria includes eucalypts in its examples of native alpine flowers associated with Bogong moths. Confirm mature size, root space and fire-management requirements before planting. Select a locally appropriate species rather than treating “eucalypt” as one uniform option.
Tea tree Tea tree is another native alpine-flower example in Alpine Resorts Victoria’s guidance. Use a species suited to your region and moisture conditions; nursery advice is important because common names cover several plants.
Grevillea Alpine Resorts Victoria names grevillea among suitable native alpine flowers. Match the species to local climate and flowering period. Avoid assuming every grevillea offers the same nectar or structure.
Eupomatia Sunshine Coast Botanic Garden recommends night-blooming pale flowers such as Eupomatia for moth pollinators generally. This is Queensland botanic-garden guidance. Verify regional suitability before planting outside comparable climates.
Commersonia Sunshine Coast Botanic Garden also gives Commersonia as a night-blooming pale-flower example. Use local horticultural advice and consider whether the species’ flowering period overlaps with the insects you hope to support.

How to compare candidate plants

When a nursery offers several possibilities, compare four practical factors:

  1. Regional suitability: Will the plant tolerate your climate, soil and exposure without intensive intervention?
  2. Local provenance: Can you obtain a form sourced from nearby natural populations or an approved local seed zone?
  3. Flowering period: Does it provide flowers during the months when nocturnal insects are active in your area?
  4. Night access: Are flowers pale, open or otherwise accessible after dark, and can they remain in a genuinely dark part of the garden?

Plant several suitable species rather than relying on one. Diversity reduces the chance that one failed flowering season leaves the garden without resources, but it does not guarantee a Bogong visit.

Use lighting only where safety requires it

Lighting is the most common way a well-intentioned garden becomes harmful. Adults may fly toward lamps, yet the Australian Government warns that artificial light can disrupt movement and ecological interactions. The best default is darkness around plants, paths and resting areas.

Situation Safer choice Reason
Decorative garden lighting Turn it off at night. It adds no essential function and can illuminate habitat that should remain dark.
Security or access lighting Use it only when needed, for the shortest practical duration and at the lowest useful intensity. This limits the time and area in which wildlife is exposed to artificial light.
Path beside flowering plants Keep the plant bed unlit; place any necessary light so it does not wash across flowers or dark corridors. Dark refuge areas allow nocturnal insects to move and rest without a lamp acting as a lure.
Migration season Be especially strict about unnecessary outdoor lights during September–December and February–April. These are the migration periods listed by Zoos Victoria for Bogong moths.
“Moth-attracting” lamp Do not install one. Attracting insects into a lit space can increase disturbance rather than provide habitat.

If a light must remain on, keep the surrounding planting and flight routes as dark as possible. A practical design is a lit entrance separated from a darker flowering area, rather than a lamp aimed at the flowers. The Australian Government describes connected dark areas and corridors as useful design principles for nocturnal wildlife.

A step-by-step plan for a low-disturbance garden

  1. Map the dark areas first. Walk the garden after sunset and note which beds remain unlit. Reserve those areas for native flowering plants. Record which fixtures illuminate leaves, flowers, walls or windows.
  2. Audit every outdoor light. For each fixture, ask whether it serves a safety or access need. Switch off decorative lights. For essential fixtures, shorten the operating period and prevent light from spilling into the planting area.
  3. Consult a local native-plant nursery. Explain that you want flowers for nocturnal pollinators and ask for species suited to your soil, climate and local provenance. In the Victorian Alps, Alpine Resorts Victoria points readers toward the Victorian Alps Nursery for suitable alpine plants.
  4. Combine locally appropriate species. Include several flowering natives rather than a single specimen. In areas where they are suitable, investigate the Correa, eucalypt, tea tree and grevillea examples listed for Bogong moths. In climates comparable to the Sunshine Coast, ask whether night-blooming pale flowers such as Eupomatia or Commersonia are appropriate.
  5. Protect the planting from chemicals. Remove routine insecticide spraying from the beds. If another pest problem appears, obtain species-specific, non-chemical advice before treating the area; do not spray a moth or a flower covered with visiting insects.
  6. Mark a no-disturbance zone. Tell household members not to pick up, brush away or photograph resting moths with a flash at close range. Observe from a distance and leave the insect where it is.
  7. Keep seasonal notes. Record flowering dates, weather, lights that were operating and any moth sightings. This helps you adjust planting and lighting without assuming that one quiet night means the garden failed.
  8. Submit useful sightings. Photograph a suspected Bogong moth without handling it and upload the observation to Zoos Victoria’s Moth Tracker. Its project says that the team verifies sightings and shares them with experts, partners and government.

How to recognise a Bogong moth

Zoos Victoria gives several field clues. An adult is about 2.5–3.5 centimetres long, has a dark stripe on each wing, and shows a circular spot near the top and a kidney-shaped spot near the bottom of each stripe. The two spots are the same colour. These features are aids, not a substitute for expert confirmation.

Observation What to do
Size appears close to 2.5–3.5 cm and the wing pattern matches Take a clear photograph from a respectful distance and submit it to Moth Tracker.
The insect is partly hidden, damaged or moving too quickly to identify Submit the uncertain sighting anyway if the project accepts it; do not capture the moth just to obtain a better image.
You cannot distinguish it from another brown moth Record it as an unidentified night-flying insect rather than claiming it is a Bogong moth.

The Australian Museum associates Bogong moths with southern Australian urban areas, forests and woodlands and explains their inland-to-alpine-to-inland migration. A moth seen outside those broad settings is not automatically a different species, but location alone is not enough for identification.

Method 1: Create a single route outside

  1. Close doors to other rooms so the moth has fewer directions in which to fly.
  2. Switch off indoor lights, including lamps and bright screens if practical.
  3. Leave one outdoor light on near an open exit. The contrast can help guide the moth toward the doorway.
  4. Stand back and give it time. Do not wave towels, swat at it or turn on additional lights.
  5. Once it leaves, switch off the outdoor light if it is not needed.

Method 2: Glass-and-card release

  1. Wait until the moth settles on a flat surface.
  2. Place a clear glass or container over it without pressing against the insect.
  3. Slide a stiff piece of paper or cardboard under the rim.
  4. Keep the paper supporting the opening, carry the container outside and set it near sheltered vegetation.
  5. Lift the glass gently and step away.

If the moth is in a hard-to-reach place, leaving the room dark and an outdoor exit lit is safer than attempting a risky climb. Do not use insecticide, glue traps or a vacuum.

How to help other night-flying insects

“Night-flying insects” is a broad group. Moths, beetles, flies and other nocturnal visitors do not all use the same plants or respond to the same conditions. The most transferable measure is to reduce unnecessary artificial light and maintain a range of locally suitable native flowers.

Sunshine Coast Botanic Garden’s examples of pale, night-blooming Eupomatia and Commersonia are specifically framed as support for moth pollinators generally, not as a universal Australian recipe. In another region, ask a local botanic garden, council nursery or native-plant specialist for equivalent species. Choose plants for ecological fit first, then consider flower colour and night accessibility.

Keep at least one part of the garden dark enough to function as a refuge. A fully illuminated yard offers no low-light alternative, while a mixed design can provide essential access lighting and an unlit area for insects. Avoid treating every visitor as a pest: identification before intervention prevents unnecessary harm.

Seasonal checklist for Australia’s Bogong migration windows

Period Likely context Garden actions
September–December Zoos Victoria’s first reported Bogong migration period; adults move toward cooler alpine areas in spring. Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights, check that flowers are locally appropriate and avoid insecticides. Watch without handling.
Summer Adults aestivate in cool alpine areas, according to the Australian Museum. Maintain dark refuge areas and plants, but do not expect constant adult activity in every garden.
February–April Zoos Victoria’s second reported migration period; adults return inland in autumn to breed. Repeat the lighting audit, keep flowering areas chemical-free and record sightings for Moth Tracker.
Outside those periods Other moths and night insects may still use the garden; local activity varies. Continue regionally suitable planting and dark-garden practices rather than adding a lure light.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Installing a bright “moth light”: Remove it and restore a dark flowering area. Attraction does not establish that the light is beneficial.
  • Planting an alpine recommendation in an unsuitable climate: Replace failed or stressed plants with locally appropriate natives. The Correa, eucalypt, tea tree and grevillea examples come from Alpine Resorts Victoria’s guidance and are not a universal list.
  • Assuming every pale flower supports every moth: Treat Eupomatia and Commersonia as Sunshine Coast examples, then seek regional advice.
  • Spraying because a moth is resting on a plant: Stop and identify the insect first. Leave it undisturbed; Bogong moths are not dangerous to people or pets.
  • Handling a moth for a perfect photograph: Use a distance photograph and submit an uncertain record rather than chasing or trapping it.
  • Concluding that no sightings mean the garden failed: Migration timing and local abundance vary, and a dark garden may be helping insects pass safely without making them conspicuous.

What success can—and cannot—mean

A successful project has measurable, low-risk features: locally suitable native flowers, an area that remains dark after sunset, no routine insecticide exposure and fewer unnecessary disturbances. You can document those conditions even when no Bogong moth appears.

You cannot promise to attract a Bogong moth on a particular night, increase a regional population from one garden or change a migration route. The Australian Museum’s lifecycle description and Zoos Victoria’s seasonal windows explain why visits are temporary. The most responsible objective is to remove avoidable hazards and provide suitable resources if a moth passes through.

For a suspected Bogong moth, a clear photograph and a Moth Tracker submission turn a private observation into information that Zoos Victoria says it verifies and shares with experts, partners and government. That contribution is more useful than keeping the insect under a lamp for display.
