Assess corporate-credit exposure by tracing every issuer behind your individual bonds and bond funds, then testing each debt claim’s ability to be repaid and its position if the issuer fails. Ratings are useful starting points, not guarantees. A sound review also measures maturity, liquidity, interest-rate sensitivity, call terms, seniority, and concentration by issuer and bond type.
This is general investor education, not a personalized allocation recommendation. Use current statements, fund holdings, offering documents, issuer reports, and market data for an up-to-date assessment.

What corporate credit risk means
A corporate bond is a debt obligation. The issuer is legally committed to make scheduled interest payments and generally return principal at maturity. Corporate credit risk is the possibility that the company cannot make those payments on time or in full. A missed payment, restructuring, or bankruptcy can reduce income, delay repayment, or produce a loss of principal.

It can be direct, such as a bond held in a brokerage account, or indirect, such as a bond fund that owns hundreds of corporate issues. A fund’s name or category does not by itself reveal its current corporate-credit exposure; its objective and actual holdings do.

Credit risk is distinct from the risk that a bond’s market price falls when interest rates rise, or that you cannot sell quickly at a fair price. Those risks interact: a bond with credit concerns may become less liquid, and a long-maturity bond can lose more market value when rates move even if the issuer remains solvent.
Step 1: Inventory every source of exposure
Start with a position-level inventory dated to the same review date. Include taxable and tax-advantaged accounts, separately managed mandates, workplace plans, and cash-like products that may hold corporate debt.
Individual bonds
- Record the legal issuer, issue or CUSIP identifier, face value, market value, coupon, maturity date, and whether the position is held to maturity or may be sold earlier.
- Capture the stated seniority, security, call features, and any available rating from the offering documents or account statement.
- Separate a company’s different issues. One issuer can have secured, senior unsecured, and subordinated bonds with materially different recovery prospects.
Bond funds and income funds
For each fund, save the latest holdings file, prospectus, shareholder report, and stated investment objective. Identify the percentage in corporate issuers, the number and names of major issuers, the split between investment-grade and non-investment-grade debt, and any cash, government, mortgage, or asset-backed holdings. Holdings change, so note the file’s “as of” date and do not treat an old report as a current exposure statement.
Other structures
Exchange-traded funds, closed-end funds, target-maturity funds, and insurance or retirement products can all pass corporate-credit risk through to you. Derivatives, repurchase arrangements, and securities lending can add counterparty or collateral risks that are not the same as owning a plain corporate bond; read the relevant disclosure before counting them as equivalent exposures.
Build an issuer map
Aggregate positions by ultimate corporate issuer rather than by fund ticker or bond nickname. If a fund owns several subsidiaries’ debt, determine whether the obligations are guaranteed by a parent or are obligations only of the subsidiary. Keep a separate line for each issuer when guarantees, legal entities, or claim priority differ.
Step 2: Test the issuer’s ability to pay
The central question is whether the issuer can produce enough cash or obtain financing to meet interest and principal obligations when due. Use the issuer’s current financial statements, debt schedule, earnings releases, and material-event filings. Focus on facts that affect repayment rather than on a single headline metric.
Cash generation and upcoming obligations
- Compare operating cash flow with interest expense and scheduled maturities.
- List debt coming due before the bond you own and identify whether the issuer has cash, committed credit lines, or market access to refinance it.
- Check for declining revenue, margin pressure, cash burn, covenant breaches, litigation, regulatory action, or asset sales that could weaken repayment capacity.
- Consider whether the business depends on volatile commodity prices, a small number of customers, or a cyclical sector.
Leverage and debt layering
Look at total debt, secured debt, guarantees, leases, and other claims that may rank ahead of your issue. Two companies with similar ratings can have very different debt structures and refinancing needs. A low coupon does not make a heavily leveraged issuer safe, and a high coupon does not prove that default is imminent.

A covenant package is not a guarantee: definitions, baskets, waivers, and amendments determine how much protection it actually provides.

Step 3: Use ratings as evidence, not a verdict
Credit ratings estimate relative credit risk under an agency’s methodology. They can be revised, placed on watch, or withdrawn. Agencies may use different definitions, symbols, and analytical approaches, so compare the meaning of a rating within the issuing agency’s scale rather than assuming that every symbol is interchangeable.
The SEC’s investor bulletin describes a commonly used boundary in which BBB- or higher is investment grade and lower ratings are non-investment grade; agency conventions can differ. Treat that boundary as a classification convention, not a promise that default cannot occur above it or must occur below it.
The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy and Office of Credit Ratings state: “You should not base your investment decision solely on a credit rating or treat a credit rating as if it were investment advice.” Ratings do not measure liquidity, interest-rate risk, prepayment risk, tax effects, or whether a price compensates you for those risks.

What to record
- Current rating and the agency that assigned it.
- Whether the rating is stable, under review, on watch, or recently changed.
- The rating at purchase, if known, so deterioration is visible.
- Any difference between an issuer rating and the rating of the specific issue. Seniority, collateral, guarantees, and structural subordination can produce different issue ratings.
Rating changes and market signals
A downgrade can raise financing costs and reduce a bond’s price, but a stable rating does not eliminate risk. Market prices, spreads, trading liquidity, and issuer disclosures may signal concern before a formal rating action. Conversely, a price decline caused by broad interest-rate changes is not automatically evidence of worsening credit.
Step 4: Understand where your claim ranks
Recovery depends on what assets support the issue and where it stands among competing claims if the company defaults or enters bankruptcy. The legal documents control; labels are shorthand.
| Debt structure | What it generally means | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Secured debt | Specified collateral is pledged to support repayment. A secured creditor generally has a claim against that collateral, subject to the documents and competing liens. | What assets are pledged? Are liens first-priority or shared? Can collateral value fall below the debt? |
| Senior unsecured debt | No specified collateral secures the bond, but the claim generally ranks ahead of subordinated debt in the issuer’s capital structure. | Which secured, guaranteed, or structurally senior claims rank ahead? Are subsidiaries involved? |
| Subordinated debt | The claim contractually ranks behind specified senior obligations, so losses can be greater in a default. | What subordination language, payment restrictions, and loss-absorption provisions apply? |
“Senior” does not mean risk-free, and “secured” does not guarantee full recovery. Bankruptcy priority is subject to the indenture, collateral value, guarantees, liens, administrative expenses, and other competing claims. Read the indenture and any supplemental agreements when the position is material.
Step 5: Separate credit risk from the other bond risks
Interest-rate and duration exposure
When market rates rise, existing fixed-rate bonds generally become less valuable because new bonds offer higher yields. Longer maturities and higher duration usually produce larger price changes for a given rate move. A bond can show a market loss even while every coupon is paid. If you must sell before maturity, that price matters; if you hold to maturity, default and reinvestment risks still remain.

Liquidity is the ability to sell promptly without accepting a large price concession. Thinly traded issues, small offerings, distressed credits, and stressed markets can have wide bid-ask spreads or no immediately visible buyer. A fund may offer daily dealing even when some underlying bonds trade infrequently; the fund’s price can therefore move sharply during redemption pressure.

Maturity and reinvestment
Maturity determines when principal is due and when you must reinvest it. A near-term maturity can reduce interest-rate sensitivity but concentrates refinancing or repayment risk at one date. A ladder spreads dates but does not remove issuer risk if several rungs depend on the same company.
Call and prepayment risk
A callable bond may be redeemed before its stated maturity, often when rates fall. You may have to reinvest at a lower yield, and the bond’s quoted yield may assume a call that does not occur. Review call dates, prices, make-whole provisions, and any sinking-fund terms rather than relying only on yield to maturity.
Inflation, tax, and currency considerations
Inflation can reduce the purchasing power of fixed payments. Tax treatment can change the after-tax return. A bond denominated in a foreign currency adds exchange-rate exposure unless hedged. These are not substitutes for credit analysis, but they affect the value of the cash flows you are assessing.

Step 6: Measure concentration and diversification
Concentration turns an issuer-specific problem into a portfolio problem. Calculate each issuer’s share of total fixed-income assets and of total portfolio value, including the same issuer held through multiple funds. Also group exposure by sector, geography, parent company, legal subsidiary, rating category, maturity bucket, and seniority.
Look through funds
If a fund owns 2% of its assets in a company and you own 10% of your portfolio in that fund, the look-through exposure from that holding is 0.2% of your portfolio, before considering other funds or direct bonds. Repeat the calculation for every material issuer and add overlapping positions. This is a measurement method, not a universal safe limit.
Test concentration by scenario
- Single-issuer default: estimate the portfolio impact if one issuer stops paying and recovery is delayed or incomplete.
- Sector stress: consider simultaneous pressure on companies exposed to the same commodity, regulation, consumer trend, or economic cycle.
- Downgrade wave: assess what happens if several holdings fall below an investment-grade mandate or fund guideline.
- Liquidity event: estimate whether you could meet a cash need without selling the least liquid or most stressed positions.
Diversification can reduce the damage from one issuer’s failure, but it cannot eliminate broad market, sector, interest-rate, or liquidity shocks. SEC materials do not prescribe one corporate-bond percentage or concentration limit that fits every investor.
Step 7: Compare two bonds or two corporate-credit exposures consistently
Use the same checklist for every candidate or existing position. A rating-only comparison can hide meaningful differences in claim priority, maturity, liquidity, and concentration.

| Comparison axis | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Issuer repayment capacity | Cash flow, leverage, upcoming maturities, refinancing access, and business stress. |
| Rating and trend | Agency, current issue rating, outlook or watch status, prior changes, and definitions. |
| Credit category | Investment-grade or non-investment-grade classification, recognizing that categories are conventions rather than guarantees. |
| Claim priority | Secured, senior unsecured, or subordinated status; guarantees; collateral; and structural subordination. |
| Maturity | Final maturity, payment schedule, and refinancing concentration. |
| Liquidity | Trading activity, bid-ask spread, issue size, and the likelihood of needing to sell early. |
| Call terms | First call date, call price, make-whole language, and yield under different redemption dates. |
| Position size | Direct holding plus look-through fund exposure and overlap with related issuers. |
| For a fund | Current holdings, stated objective, corporate-debt percentage, turnover, maturity profile, and concentration in its largest issuers. |
Compare yield only after these factors are understood. A higher yield may compensate for higher estimated default risk, which is why high-yield bonds require attention to the credit risk behind the yield. Yield is not a free return and does not by itself establish that an issue is attractive.

Step 8: Review high-yield exposure without treating the label as a conclusion
High-yield corporate bonds generally carry higher estimated default risk than investment-grade bonds and therefore often offer higher yields. The additional yield is compensation demanded by the market for greater uncertainty, not a guarantee of superior returns.
For a high-yield position, inspect the issuer’s near-term maturities, cash interest burden, covenant flexibility, secured debt ahead of the bond, recovery prospects, and trading liquidity. Check whether a fund’s mandate permits it to hold securities that are downgraded and how it handles defaults, distressed exchanges, or securities that become illiquid.
Step 9: Analyze a bond fund as a portfolio of credit claims
A bond fund’s credit exposure comes from the issuers of the bonds it owns. The fund’s investment objective, prospectus, holdings, maturity profile, and credit-quality limits explain what it is permitted to do; the holdings file shows what it actually owned on a particular date.

- What percentage was in corporate bonds at the holdings date?
- What were the ten largest issuers and the combined share of assets?
- How much was investment grade, non-investment grade, unrated, government, mortgage, or asset-backed?
- What were the average and effective maturities or durations, and how did they change?
- Does the fund use derivatives, leverage, securities lending, or cash-management arrangements that introduce additional counterparties?
- How frequently are holdings and credit statistics reported, and how stale could the information be when you make a decision?
Do not infer corporate exposure from a broad label such as “income” or “short-term.” A fund can hold a mixture of corporate and non-corporate debt, and two funds in the same category can have different issuer, rating, maturity, and liquidity profiles.
Step 10: Create a repeatable monitoring process
Credit assessment is not a one-time purchase check. Set a review schedule that matches the position’s complexity and your need for liquidity.
- On purchase or transfer: save the prospectus or indenture, issue rating, price, yield calculation, maturity, call schedule, and position size.
- At each statement date: update market value, issuer weights, fund holdings dates, ratings, and maturity buckets.
- After a material event: reread issuer disclosures when there is a downgrade, missed payment, covenant waiver, merger, major acquisition, restructuring, asset sale, or sudden liquidity change.
- Before a cash need: identify which positions can be sold with the least credit and liquidity damage, rather than assuming every bond or fund can be converted to cash at a stable price.
- At least annually: compare actual exposure with your intended risk level, tax circumstances, time horizon, and diversification plan. Reassess whether a fund’s current holdings still match its stated objective.
Keep a dated worksheet so you can distinguish a change in the issuer from a change in rates, spreads, fund holdings, or your own position size.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The rating makes it safe.”
Correction: read the rating definition, issue-specific terms, financial condition, and rating trend. Treat the rating as one input.
“A higher yield is automatically better.”
Correction: identify the default, liquidity, duration, call, and recovery risks that may be producing the yield premium.
Best Value
“My fund is diversified, so I have no issuer concentration.”
Correction: aggregate look-through holdings across funds and direct bonds. Diversification by security count is not the same as diversification by issuer or sector.
“Senior means I will be repaid first in full.”
Correction: inspect liens, guarantees, subsidiaries, secured claims, and the indenture. Priority affects recovery order, not certainty of recovery.
“A price decline proves the company is failing.”
Correction: separate rate movements and market liquidity from issuer-specific deterioration, then check current disclosures and trading conditions.
“The fund label tells me its current holdings.”
Correction: use the latest available holdings and objective, record their dates, and account for changes between reporting periods.
A practical worksheet for your review
For each direct bond or material look-through issuer, record:
- Issuer and legal entity
- Direct, fund, or both sources of exposure
- Market value and percentage of total portfolio
- Coupon, payment frequency, and maturity
- Current issue rating, agency, outlook or watch status, and prior rating
- Investment-grade or non-investment-grade category
- Secured, senior unsecured, or subordinated status
- Collateral, guarantees, and key covenants
- Upcoming maturities and refinancing needs
- Call dates and redemption terms
- Liquidity observations and likely cash needs
- Sector, geography, parent, and subsidiary relationships
- Reason the exposure fits your time horizon and risk capacity
For a fund, add the holdings date, corporate-bond percentage, largest issuers, rating mix, duration or maturity information, turnover, and any mandate or downgrade rules. Mark every figure with its date and source so an apparently precise number is not mistaken for a current guarantee.
When to obtain professional help
Consider qualified advice when an exposure is large relative to your finances, the bond is subordinated or distressed, the issuer is restructuring, the documents are difficult to interpret, or tax, estate, insurance, or retirement rules materially affect the decision. A professional can help interpret legal priority and scenario risk, but no adviser or rating removes the possibility of loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a bond with an investment-grade rating still default?
Yes. Investment-grade is a relative classification of credit risk, not a guarantee of payment. Ratings can change, and an issuer can encounter problems before or after a rating action.
How current are bond-fund holdings?
They are current only as of the reporting date shown in the holdings file or report. Holdings can change afterward, so record the date and avoid treating a periodic disclosure as a live position list.
Does holding a bond to maturity eliminate credit risk?
No. Holding to maturity can reduce the importance of interim market-price changes, but the issuer still must pay interest and principal, and default can delay or reduce repayment.
