The most reliable answer is a layered one. Measure (1) securities classified as Chinese, (2) the China revenue earned by every company you own, (3) direct operations in China, (4) dependence on Chinese suppliers and customers, and (5) the China exposure embedded in funds. Keep those figures separate, attach an as-of date to each, and show the largest contributors. A single “China allocation” percentage can miss substantial exposure through multinational companies and global supply chains.
MSCI’s June 2026 example makes the difference concrete: the MSCI ACWI index had a 2.5% China index weight but almost 12% China revenue exposure. Both figures were market-cap-weighted and measured different things. MSCI also estimated 8.0% China and 6.0% Taiwan tier 1 and tier 2 supply-chain exposure as of June 1, 2026. These are index-specific, modeled estimates—not a prediction of returns or losses and not a direct estimate for your portfolio.

What “China exposure” can mean
Before calculating anything, define the question. An investor asking “How much of my portfolio depends on China?” may be asking about ownership of Chinese securities, dependence on Chinese customers, factories located in China, or suppliers that would be difficult to replace. Those are related but non-identical risks.

| Country classification or domicile | How much is classified as Chinese by an index or data provider? | Issuer country classification, incorporation, or economic domicile multiplied by portfolio weight. | A foreign-listed or offshore-incorporated company may have significant China business without being classified as Chinese. |
| Security holdings | Which Chinese shares or bonds do I directly own? | Issuer, listing route, security type, and position weight. | It omits China sales and supplier links of non-Chinese issuers. |
| China-derived revenue | How much of company sales comes from China? | Portfolio weight multiplied by each issuer’s reported or modeled China revenue share. | Companies may report only broad regions; vendor estimates can differ from issuer data. |
| Direct operations | Which holdings have employees, plants, stores, licenses, or other activity in China? | Company disclosures or a modeled operating-exposure dataset. | Operational presence does not reveal the size or profitability of that activity. |
| Supply-chain exposure | Which holdings depend on Chinese suppliers or production stages? | Supplier, production, and input-flow data, often modeled in tiers. | A modeled supply-chain percentage is not the same as an estimated loss in a disruption. |
| Underlying fund exposure | What China exposure is inside an ETF, mutual fund, pension pool, or other fund? | Look through the fund’s dated holdings and apply the same measures to each underlying issuer. | Holdings can be stale or unavailable; treating an unlooked-through fund as zero creates false precision. |
Liz Houston, Executive Director of MSCI Research & Development, summarized the purpose of this approach: “At the portfolio level, understanding underlying exposure can offer a different perspective on what drives risk and performance.” The statement appeared in MSCI’s June 25, 2026 article on geographic exposure.

Step 1: Fix the portfolio scope and the measurement date
Start with a complete inventory, not a screenshot of a brokerage summary. Export positions and weights for a stated date and record the currency used for market values. Include:
- Individual shares, bonds, depositary receipts, and other listed securities.
- Exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, target-date funds, pension pools, and other pooled vehicles.
- Cash, money-market holdings, margin balances, options, futures, swaps, and other derivatives when they are material.
- Private-company interests or managed accounts whose underlying holdings are not visible in the public account.
Use the latest holdings date you can obtain, but do not call the result “current” when the portfolio file or a fund’s disclosure is old. Record three dates separately: your portfolio valuation date, the fund or security holdings date, and the company reporting period used for revenue or operations. A company might report its fiscal year before your portfolio snapshot, while a fund may disclose holdings only monthly or quarterly.
Decide whether the calculation is based on total portfolio value, invested assets excluding cash, or a specific sleeve. State how derivatives are treated. A short futures position, for example, may offset a long cash position, while a notional exposure can be much larger than the amount posted as collateral.

Classify every issuer
For each position, capture the issuer name, security type, listing venue, incorporation or domicile, country classification used by your data source, and portfolio weight. Sum the weights of positions classified as China, but label the result precisely—for example, “China-classified equity weight as of 30 September 2026.” Do not present it as the portfolio’s complete economic dependence on China.
Listing route matters. A company can be incorporated offshore, listed in the United States or Hong Kong, and still earn most of its sales in mainland China. Conversely, a multinational classified in another country can have Chinese factories, customers, or suppliers. Country classification is a useful starting layer, not an economic map.
Understand what an index classification includes
The MSCI China Index profile, with data as of September 30, 2026, says the index has 576 constituents and represents about 85% of the China equity universe. Its coverage spans A shares, H shares, B shares, Red chips, P chips, and foreign listings such as American depositary receipts. That breadth explains why China exposure can appear through several listing channels. It does not mean the index owns 85% of every Chinese business, nor that a portfolio tracking another benchmark has the same coverage.

Keep the security-weight figure alongside the listing and classification method. If two providers classify an offshore issuer differently, show the difference and investigate the methodology rather than averaging the results.
Step 3: Look through every fund and pooled vehicle
A fund’s legal domicile tells you where the fund is established, not where its portfolio companies operate. Obtain a dated holdings file or a reliable look-through report and multiply through the layers:
- For each fund, record your fund weight in the portfolio.
- For each underlying issuer, record the issuer’s weight inside that fund.
- Apply the issuer’s China classification, China revenue share, operating exposure, or supply-chain estimate.
- Multiply the three weights and add the result across all issuers and funds.
In formula form, an issuer’s look-through contribution is portfolio fund weight × issuer weight inside fund × issuer China measure. If you own the same company directly and through several funds, add those contributions so overlap is visible.
Do not silently assign zero to a fund whose holdings cannot be obtained. Put it in a separately labeled “not look-through” category, state the percentage of the portfolio it represents, and explain that the China estimate is incomplete. A fund can also hold cash, derivatives, or other funds; document how those positions were handled.
The IMF’s Portfolio Investment Positions by Counterpart Economy dataset (formerly the Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey) provides aggregate cross-border position data by counterpart economy. It separates equity and fund shares, long-term debt, and short-term debt, and its availability information was updated in October 2026. This is useful country-level context and a reasonableness check, but it is not a substitute for your own dated holdings because it does not identify your specific funds, issuers, or look-through gaps.
Step 4: Estimate China-derived revenue
Revenue exposure addresses a different question from domicile: what share of the businesses you own sells to customers in China? For each issuer, find the geographic revenue share in its latest annual report, regulatory filing, earnings release, or a documented data service. Then calculate:

China revenue exposure = Σ (portfolio weight × issuer China revenue share)
Use the company’s definition exactly. “China” may mean mainland China, Greater China, or a broader Asia-Pacific region. If only a broad region is disclosed, do not present a precise mainland-China percentage as issuer-reported fact. You can allocate a broad region using a modeled method, but label the result as an estimate, name the method or vendor, and show the portion of the portfolio covered by reported versus modeled data.
Revenue is not profit, cash flow, or share-price sensitivity. A company may have high China sales but low margins there, hedge its currency, or be able to redirect production. Another may report modest China revenue while relying on Chinese inputs. Keep revenue, operations, and supply chains in separate columns.

Step 5: Add operating and supply-chain lenses
Direct operations
Look for factories, research centers, offices, stores, logistics sites, employees, licenses, and joint ventures in company filings. Record the location and activity where disclosed. A modeled direct-operations estimate can fill gaps, but it must be marked as modeled and dated. The estimate answers “where does the company operate?” rather than “how much would an interruption cost?”
Suppliers and production stages
Map material suppliers and production steps when the business provides that information. Distinguish tier 1 suppliers from deeper tiers; a component purchased from a non-Chinese contractor may still contain Chinese inputs. Supply-chain data are often modeled because companies do not publish every supplier relationship.
MSCI reported that, for the MSCI ACWI index, modeled tier 1 and tier 2 supply-chain exposure was 8.0% for China and 6.0% for Taiwan, using data as of June 1, 2026. MSCI cautions that such estimates may differ from company-reported figures. Do not convert those percentages into an expected portfolio loss without a separate scenario analysis that specifies disruption length, substitution, pricing, inventory, and policy responses.

Step 6: Aggregate, rank, and inspect concentration
Produce a separate total for each lens. A practical worksheet has one row per issuer and columns for portfolio weight, classification, China revenue share, operations indicator or estimate, supply-chain estimate, data source, reporting date, and confidence or coverage status.
Recommended Free Tools
Then examine:
- Top contributors: list the issuers and funds that account for most of each exposure measure.
- Sector concentration: identify whether China exposure clusters in technology hardware, consumer goods, industrials, financials, energy, health care, or another sector.
- Fund overlap: count the same issuer reached through multiple funds and direct holdings.
- Data coverage: show the percentage based on issuer-reported data, modeled data, and holdings that could not be looked through.
- Time mismatch: flag when company revenue periods or fund holdings materially predate the portfolio valuation date.
- Sensitivity: recalculate totals with reasonable alternative treatments for broad regional revenue and missing fund holdings.
Rankings are more informative than a single headline percentage. A portfolio with a moderate aggregate China revenue figure may still have one supplier or one fund responsible for most of the exposure. Conversely, a diversified set of small revenue links may be less concentrated but harder to monitor.

When two tools or reports disagree, compare their definitions before deciding that one is wrong.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Measurement basis | Is the figure based on domicile, security holdings, China revenue, direct operations, supply chain, or fund look-through? |
| Coverage | What percentage of portfolio value has issuer-reported data, modeled data, or no usable data? |
| Geographic definition | Does “China” mean mainland China, Greater China, or a provider-specific country grouping? |
| Method | Are revenue and supply-chain figures reported by companies or inferred by a model? How are broad regions allocated? |
| Concentration | Which issuers, sectors, funds, or suppliers create the largest contributions? |
| Timing | What are the portfolio, holdings, company-reporting, and index dates, and how often is each updated? |
| Instrument characteristics | What are the listing route, share class, liquidity, currency, accessibility, fund structure, and applicable regulations? |
Preserve the original source and date for every number. A vendor’s modeled estimate should not be displayed with more decimal places than its method supports.
What published index examples can—and cannot—tell you
MSCI’s June 2026 ACWI example reported a 2.5% China index weight and almost 12% China revenue exposure. For context, the same article reported just below 44% U.S. revenue exposure and nearly 64% U.S. domicile. These are market-cap-weighted index statistics, not a forecast and not a proxy for every investor’s allocation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe MSCI World with China Exposure Index offers another lens. Its April 30, 2026 factsheet listed 50 constituents selected from MSCI World companies with the highest proportions of revenue derived from China. It demonstrates how an investor can measure China-linked economics among companies domiciled in developed markets. It is a benchmark methodology, not an endorsement of a fund or security.
Best Value
MSCI’s market-classification framework considers economic development, market accessibility, investability, and investors’ practical experience accessing and transacting in a market. Those dimensions help explain why a security’s classification and an investor’s real-world ability to trade it may differ. They are not individual investment or legal advice.
Instrument and investor risks to review
Exposure measurement does not replace a review of the instrument’s current documents. Read the prospectus, annual report, exchange notices, and rules that apply in your jurisdiction. Relevant issues can include:
- Currency fluctuations between the renminbi, the security’s trading currency, and your reporting currency.
- Lower liquidity, wider spreads, trading suspensions, settlement differences, and limits on market access.
- Exchange controls, repatriation restrictions, changing regulation, and differences in investor rights.
- Political or policy actions affecting ownership, licensing, data, technology transfer, or cross-border payments.
- Risks described in a particular fund’s disclosure, such as expropriation, confiscatory taxation, nationalization, and exchange controls.
A 2026 summary prospectus for the Franklin FTSE China ETF lists currency fluctuations, less liquidity, expropriation, confiscatory taxation, nationalization, and exchange controls among that fund’s China-related risks. Those are examples from one fund’s disclosure, not a universal list or a statement that every instrument has identical exposure.
A repeatable review checklist
- Set the boundary: name the portfolio, asset classes, valuation date, currency, and treatment of cash and derivatives.
- Collect holdings: obtain complete security and fund positions, including look-through files where available.
- Classify securities: record domicile, listing, security type, and the provider’s country classification.
- Calculate direct weight: sum China-classified positions and retain the underlying issuer list.
- Calculate fund look-through: multiply fund weight by underlying issuer weight and label funds that could not be opened.
- Collect revenue data: use the latest company disclosure, document geographic definitions, and separate reported from modeled shares.
- Map operations and supply chains: record direct activity and tiered supplier estimates separately from revenue.
- Aggregate and rank: identify top issuers, sectors, funds, overlaps, and unlooked-through assets.
- Test sensitivity: rerun totals for alternative regional allocations and missing-data treatments.
- Review documents: check current prospectuses, issuer disclosures, market-access rules, currency conditions, and investor rights.
- Set a refresh schedule: update after major portfolio changes and at a frequency consistent with fund and company reporting.
Interpreting the result without overclaiming
Report a dashboard rather than one “true” China number: China-classified securities, look-through holdings, China revenue, direct operations, and supply-chain exposure, each with its date, coverage, and method. A high number in one column does not prove a high number in another. A revenue percentage is not a loss estimate; a supply-chain percentage is not a disruption scenario; and an index classification is not a complete measure of economic dependence.
The most decision-useful conclusion identifies where the exposure comes from, how concentrated it is, how much is reported versus modeled, and which assumptions would change the result. That makes the assessment auditable and allows it to be updated when holdings, company disclosures, or market-access rules change.
