Short answer: a North Sea gas field can support a data center only when independently verified gas deliverability, gas treatment, net firm generation, cooling, communications, safety, environmental performance, permits and project economics all work for the facility’s full operating life. A reserve estimate or an announced megawatt figure is not enough.
The practical test is an integrated one: can the field deliver suitable gas at the required rate and pressure; can an offshore plant turn it into dependable electricity after treatment, capture and auxiliary loads; can the data center operate through trips, maintenance and bad weather; and can the complete project obtain consent and earn an acceptable return? The following framework answers those questions and uses the Earlham and Orwell concept announced by Orcadian Energy on 16 July 2026 as a case study, without treating that proposal as proof of feasibility.

Define what “support a data center” means
“Support” should mean more than having enough molecules of gas in the reservoir. A viable project must provide a continuous service to a defined computing load, with enough redundancy for planned maintenance, equipment failures, weather disruption and field decline. It must also meet the applicable emissions, marine, planning, safety and financial requirements.
Assess the complete facility demand rather than comparing a server-hall number with a power-station nameplate. The relevant comparison is:

net firm electrical output available to the data center ≥ total facility demand at the required reliability.
Total demand includes information-technology equipment, cooling, pumps, fans, gas treatment, carbon-capture systems, compression, controls, lighting, water systems, accommodation, communications and reserve capacity. “Firm” means power still available after realistic auxiliary consumption, efficiency losses, degradation, maintenance, trips and the chosen backup configuration.
A field may be physically capable of producing gas yet fail this test because its rate declines too quickly, the gas requires disproportionate treatment, the capture plant consumes too much power, or offshore operations cost more than an onshore alternative.
Gate 1: Prove the gas quantity, rate and quality
Use an independently assessed production profile
Start with an independent resource and reserves assessment, not a resource-in-place headline. Require recoverable volumes, expected production rates, reservoir pressure, decline curves, well count, development timing, uptime assumptions and the period over which the field can sustain the plant’s contracted fuel requirement.
Model at least three cases: expected production, a downside decline case and a delayed or lower-rate development case. Show when compression or additional wells become necessary. A data center normally needs dependable power for many years, while a field’s economically recoverable rate may fall sharply after an initial plateau. The power and computing design should therefore be tested against the entire field-life profile, not only first gas.
Characterise the gas before selecting equipment
Obtain a complete composition analysis, including carbon dioxide, methane, water, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide and other contaminants, plus pressure, temperature, heating value and variation over time. These data determine well completion, separation, dehydration, compression, turbines or engines, carbon-capture chemistry, materials selection and safety systems.
High carbon dioxide can reduce heating value and increase the volume of gas that must be handled for each megawatt-hour. Water and acid gases can cause corrosion or hydrate formation. A treatment train may require separation, dehydration, compression and disposal or reinjection before the fuel reaches the generators. Each item adds capital cost, parasitic electricity demand, maintenance and failure modes.

In its 16 July 2026 development-concept announcement, Orcadian Energy stated that Earlham gas contains 49% carbon dioxide. The company described an offshore power station, integrated carbon capture and a co-located offshore data center supplied through a proposed islanded grid. That figure is the company’s disclosed composition claim; it is not an independent reserves certification or a completed treatment design.

The same announcement did not establish an independent production curve, recoverable reserves, pressure-decline forecast or fuel-delivery contract. Those records are prerequisites for deciding whether the field can sustain a computing facility over its intended life.
Gate 2: Convert gas into firm, usable power
Build a whole-facility load model
Define the computing workload first. State the IT load in megawatts, rack density, utilization profile, growth rate and service-level requirement. Then add the non-IT load using a time-series model rather than a single percentage. Cooling demand can vary with seawater temperature, weather and server utilization; gas treatment and capture loads can vary with plant output.
Document power-usage effectiveness, but do not rely on a generic target. Include electrical distribution losses, uninterruptible-power systems, battery charging, chillers or pumps, lighting, fire systems, desalination or water treatment, accommodation and control systems. Show peak, average and minimum loads, plus black-start requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Compare with net firm generation
For each operating state, subtract plant auxiliaries, fuel treatment, carbon capture, compression and export equipment from gross generator output. Apply realistic availability and degradation. Then test whether the remaining output covers the complete data-center load with the required reserve margin.
The Earlham concept announcement referred to a proposed 200 MW offshore data-center hall and said a proposed Earlham power station could supply approximately 200 MW of electrical power “(IT load).” Those are company concept figures. They do not demonstrate that a 200 MW hall’s total facility demand, redundancy, capture penalty, maintenance reserve or uptime has been engineered. If 200 MW is an IT-load figure, the generators must provide more than 200 MW net to cover cooling and all other overheads.
Model failures, maintenance and start-up
Run a reliability model that includes generator trips, common-mode failures, gas-treatment outages, capture-plant shutdowns, cable faults, switchgear failures, weather-related access limits and planned overhauls. Specify whether redundancy is N+1, 2N or another architecture, and identify which components are shared.
Explain how the site starts after a total blackout. A black-start system may require batteries, diesel or another independent source, with fuel storage and safe access. If the field cannot deliver gas during a restart, the facility needs an alternative sequence and enough stored energy to bridge it.
Gate 3: Establish the carbon and environmental case
Count the full emissions chain
Calculate methane leakage from wells, valves and processing; combustion emissions; energy used for treatment and capture; compression; transport; storage or reinjection; and emissions associated with construction and maintenance. Report capture rate, residual emissions, solvent or sorbent losses, compression energy and monitoring requirements. A capture percentage applied only to the generator exhaust is not a lifecycle result.

If carbon dioxide is stored or reinjected, identify the reservoir, injectivity, pressure limits, well integrity, monitoring plan, permanence assumptions and liability arrangements. Demonstrate what happens if the storage system is unavailable. The power plant may need to curtail or vent, purchase another disposal route or operate under a different permit.
Interpret UK policy language precisely
The 2025 UK Overarching National Policy Statement for Energy (EN-1) states:
“Low carbon infrastructure for the purposes of this policy means, for electricity generation, all onshore and offshore generation that does not involve fossil fuel combustion (that is, renewable generation, including anaerobic digestion plants provided they meet existing definitions of low carbon; and nuclear energy generation), as well as natural gas fired generation which is carbon capture ready.”

This is a policy definition for the stated purpose. It is not a finding that a particular gas project has low lifecycle emissions, has secured consent or will capture carbon successfully. EN-2 addresses onshore natural-gas electricity-generating infrastructure and requires relevant consideration of air quality and greenhouse-gas emissions within that scope; it is not a complete checklist for an offshore installation.
Assess other environmental effects
Cover drilling, seabed disturbance, pipelines, platforms, cable routes, cooling-water intake or discharge, noise, fisheries, shipping, birds and marine mammals, chemical use, waste, flaring, decommissioning and cumulative effects. State the baseline surveys, seasonal constraints and mitigation measures. An offshore location may reduce proximity to residential areas, but it does not remove marine impacts or the need for emergency response.
Gate 4: Design the offshore data-center system
Cooling and heat rejection
Choose a cooling architecture that matches rack density, seawater conditions and maintenance access. Options may include direct seawater heat exchange, closed-loop cooling with seawater as a heat sink, air-side systems or a hybrid. Specify intake temperature ranges, fouling control, corrosion-resistant materials, filtration, pumps, discharge temperature and chemical treatment.
Orcadian Energy cited seawater as a potential heat sink in its rationale for an offshore site. That is a proposition to validate with temperature records, hydraulic calculations, environmental limits, redundancy analysis and lifecycle costs. Pumps, heat exchangers and intakes themselves consume power and can become single points of failure.
Connectivity and physical access
Compute facilities require diverse terrestrial or subsea communications routes, carrier-neutral interconnection where needed, latency targets and protected landing points. A single cable or landing station can negate the benefit of an islanded power system.

Prepare an access plan covering helicopters, vessels, weather windows, lifting limits, accommodation, spare-parts storage, medical evacuation, fire response and hazardous-area procedures. Offshore maintenance may require specialist crews and long lead times. The design should identify which failures can be repaired remotely, which require a vessel and how much computing capacity remains available during each repair.
Security and resilience
Combine physical security, cyber security, segmentation of operational technology, identity management, fire protection and evacuation. Account for salt spray, wave loading, lightning, icing where relevant, storms and collision risk. Locate critical controls and backup communications so that a single flooded or damaged room cannot disable the site.
Gate 5: Compare delivery configurations
Do not choose an offshore co-location concept until it has been compared with simpler arrangements. Use the same field-life assumptions, demand profile, emissions boundary, reliability target and financing assumptions for every option.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Gate 6: Map the jurisdiction and consent path
Identify the governing waters and connections
First determine the coastal state, licence area, platform location, cable route, storage site, landfall and any onshore generation or network works. North Sea jurisdictions do not share one approval process. A project crossing boundaries may need separate energy, marine, environmental, seabed, construction and network approvals.
UK-specific policy and marine requirements
For a UK proposal, EN-1 is the primary national policy statement for relevant nationally significant energy applications, within the wider planning and marine-policy framework. The Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme covers offshore oil and gas, gas and carbon-dioxide storage and related technologies; the government’s OESEA5 work and consultation provide the strategic context.
EN-5 addresses electricity-network infrastructure. Specified subsea-cable activities in UK territorial waters, or associated with offshore generation, require marine licensing, with requirements depending on location and activity. EN-2 is specifically an onshore natural-gas generation policy statement, so its provisions should not be presented as a complete offshore consent list. Obtain advice for the actual coordinates, technology and cable route.

Use international examples only as context
Norway’s government data-center strategy says facilities particularly above 100 MW may require investment in regional or transmission networks depending on location and existing capacity. That is useful comparative context for large loads, not a UK threshold and not a rule for an islanded installation.

Gate 7: Test economics, schedule and customers
Build an integrated project model
Include wells, flowlines, separation, dehydration, compression, generators, capture, carbon transport or injection, offshore structures, cooling, data halls, subsea cables, communications, vessels, workforce, insurance, decommissioning and contingency. Separate capital expenditure from fixed and variable operating costs. Model gas-price exposure, carbon costs, capture downtime, storage fees, electricity value, computing revenue, financing costs and taxes.
Run sensitivities for lower gas rates, higher CO2 content, delayed permits, a longer cable route, higher interest rates, reduced data-center utilization, generator degradation and carbon-storage unavailability. A project that works only at the announced capacity and an optimistic gas price is not robust.
Require evidence of demand and finance
Obtain binding or clearly staged customer commitments, workload requirements, energisation dates and credit information. Distinguish an expression of interest from a signed offtake or colocation agreement. Match the customer’s required availability and latency to the actual offshore network design.
Separate a concept, a pre-front-end engineering study, a final investment decision, a construction contract and an operating asset. The Earlham and Orwell announcement said an assessment phase had commenced and that a Concept Select Report was intended. It did not establish a final design, permit, construction commitment, customer contract, financing package or operating result.
How demand and grid context affect the decision
Large computing loads are competing for electricity connections. Ofgem reported that contracted electricity demand offers increased from 41 GW in November 2024 to 125 GW in June 2025, with data centers driving much of the increase. Its 29 July 2026 announcement described proposed measures to address speculative projects; those were consultation proposals, not settled rules in the cited release.
This context can strengthen the case for examining dedicated generation, but it does not remove the need to prove fuel supply, reliability, cooling, connectivity or consent. An islanded plant still needs a credible operating model and a plan for outages and surplus or curtailed power.
Evidence package required before a yes/no decision
A field-level assessment should not conclude “viable” until the sponsor can provide, at minimum:

Red flags that should stop a premature conclusion
- Using gas in place or a headline reserve number without a recoverable-rate and decline profile.
- Comparing a data-center IT-load figure directly with gross generator capacity.
- Counting carbon capture as a benefit without energy penalty, transport, storage, monitoring and fallback cases.
- Assuming seawater cooling is free, maintenance-free or automatically environmentally acceptable.
- Treating an announced concept as an independently certified reserve, final design or permit.
- Ignoring subsea communications, vessel access, spare parts, evacuation and cyber security.
- Applying UK onshore policy language to an offshore facility without checking scope and marine requirements.
- Choosing a configuration before comparing onshore generation, offshore export and islanded co-location on identical assumptions.
What the Earlham and Orwell example demonstrates
The proposal is useful because it exposes the questions a real assessment must answer. Orcadian Energy described a 49% carbon-dioxide gas stream, approximately 200 MW of proposed electrical supply for IT load, a proposed 200 MW offshore data-center hall, integrated carbon capture and an islanded grid. It also cited potential advantages of avoiding nearby residential areas, using seawater for cooling and reducing the need for grid transmission and distribution through co-location.
Those statements define a concept to investigate, not an established outcome. The public announcement does not by itself prove reserves, sustained production, net power after capture and auxiliaries, facility-wide reliability, customer commitment, economics or consent. The correct conclusion is therefore conditional: the field might support such a facility, but only the evidence package above can establish whether it actually can.
