A crypto breakout deserves more trust when a candle closes beyond a clearly described support or resistance level, participation is stronger than during the preceding range, a retest holds, and a higher-timeframe chart agrees. None of those observations guarantees continuation. A move that quickly closes back inside the old range is a failed breakout, or “fakeout,” and should trigger a reassessment rather than an automatic entry.
What a breakout and a fakeout actually are
A breakout is a move above resistance or below support that may mark a new directional phase. A fakeout (also called a false breakout) occurs when price crosses the level but soon reverses into the range it had just left. The distinction is about follow-through, not about whether a chart briefly printed a new high or low.

Support and resistance are not perfectly objective. Binance Academy notes that traders can interpret the same chart differently, so record how you selected a level: for example, a repeatedly tested horizontal area, rather than presenting one exact price as an unquestionable boundary. A zone is often more realistic than a single tick because trading activity may cluster around several nearby prices.

Technical evidence is probabilistic. The practical tests below describe common technical-analysis practice; they are not a validated formula, a guaranteed signal, or a promise of a profitable trade.

Use a confirmation sequence, not one trigger
Evaluate the event in a fixed order so that a dramatic wick or headline does not make the decision for you. The sequence is:
- Define the level and the previous trading range.
- Wait for a candle to close beyond the level.
- Compare volume with the asset’s own preceding range.
- Observe whether a retest holds on the other side of the level.
- Check whether a higher-timeframe chart shows the same break.
- Write the failure condition before acting, usually a return and close inside the old range.
These checks complement one another. A strong reading on one does not cancel a warning on another.
1. Define the level and the old range
Describe how the level was chosen
Mark the resistance or support that price has reacted to, then note the chart timeframe and the observations that make the area relevant. Because level selection is subjective, two analysts can draw different boundaries and both be acting consistently with the same price history. State whether you are using a horizontal area, a prior swing, or another visible reference; do not imply that the market recognizes a mathematically exact line.

Identify the upper and lower boundaries that contained price before the move. This gives you a concrete test later: if price returns and closes inside that prior range, the breakout interpretation is weakened. A brief intrabar probe back into the range is not identical to a closing failure, so record both what happened during the candle and where it finished.
2. Wait for a candle close beyond the level
Why a wick is weaker evidence
A wick can cross resistance or support and then be rejected before the candle ends. Binance Academy describes a close past the level as a common confirmation signal because it shows that the market held beyond the boundary for the entire candle interval. A candle that only wicks through the level therefore supplies less evidence than one that closes beyond it.
Do not invent a universal number of closes
There is no established rule in the available evidence requiring exactly two closes, three closes, or any other fixed count. The useful question is whether the completed candle ended beyond the level you defined, on the timeframe you are evaluating, and whether subsequent behavior supports that reading. A close is an observation, not a guarantee of continuation.
3. Compare volume with the preceding range
Use relative participation, not an arbitrary multiple
Compare the breakout candle’s volume with the volume seen while the asset traded in its previous range. Rising volume is commonly treated as evidence that more participants were involved; shrinking or fading volume weakens the case for follow-through. The comparison must be made with the same asset and a comparable set of preceding candles rather than with a universal market-wide number.

The sources do not establish a reliable volume ratio, minimum percentage increase, or mandatory threshold. Avoid rules such as “volume must be twice the average.” Treat volume as supporting context alongside the close, retest, and timeframe rather than as proof.
Reported volume has a venue-quality problem
Volume data can be distorted by wash trading. A 2021 Crypto Wash Trading study estimated that wash trading averaged over 70% of reported volume on the unregulated exchanges it examined. That figure applies to the exchanges and period studied; it is not a current estimate for every exchange or for the entire cryptocurrency market. Consequently, unusually high reported volume should be interpreted in light of the venue and the reliability of its measurements.
4. Watch the retest of the broken level
What a constructive upside retest looks like
After an upside break, price may return to the former resistance. If that area holds as support and price moves away again, the behavior supports the breakout interpretation. The same logic applies in reverse after a downside break: former support should act as resistance during a retest.
What a failed retest tells you
A return through the level, followed by a move back into the old range, is a warning that the initial break lacked follow-through. The retest does not need to occur at a predetermined number of candles or within a fixed time window; the evidence does not establish a universal interval. Record whether the market actually tested the area and how it closed, rather than assuming that every breakout must produce a textbook pullback.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Check a higher-timeframe chart
A break visible only on a very short chart may be noise inside a larger range. Reviewing a higher timeframe adds context: you can see whether the move is also beyond a meaningful level or merely a small fluctuation within a broader structure. Binance Academy identifies higher-timeframe confirmation as one way traders add context, but it does not prescribe a universally best timeframe or a fixed combination of intervals.
Choose timeframes that match your intended holding period and state them explicitly. For example, a short-term observation and a higher-timeframe check should not be presented as interchangeable evidence. Agreement across charts strengthens the case; disagreement is a reason to reduce confidence, not a reason to force a conclusion.
6. State the failure condition before you act
Write down what would make you abandon the breakout thesis. The clearest condition in the available guidance is a return and close inside the previous range. Defining that condition in advance prevents you from moving the goalposts after price reverses. It also separates an ordinary retest from a failed breakout: a retest that holds the broken level is constructive, while a close back inside the old range weakens or invalidates the original interpretation.

This is an assessment rule, not a promise that losses can be avoided. Even a move that meets every observation can reverse later, and a move that initially looks weak can recover. Keep the language of your plan conditional: “the evidence supports” or “the setup is weakened,” rather than “the breakout will continue.”

| Observation | More supportive of a breakout | More consistent with a false signal |
|---|---|---|
| Candle relative to the level | A completed candle closes beyond the selected support or resistance area. | Price only wicks through, or closes back on the original side. |
| Volume relative to the prior range | Participation rises compared with the asset’s preceding range. | Volume shrinks or fades during the attempted break. |
| Retest | Former resistance holds as support after an upside break, or former support holds as resistance after a downside break. | The retest fails and price moves back into the old range. |
| Higher timeframe | The break is visible in the broader chart context. | The move appears only on a very short chart and lacks broader confirmation. |
| Failure rule | Price remains outside the prior range while the other observations stay supportive. | Price returns and closes inside the prior range. |
The table is a way to organize observations, not a scoring system. The evidence does not supply weights, a minimum number of positive rows, or a proven hit rate.
A hypothetical walkthrough
Imagine an asset trading in a range bounded by a resistance zone and a support zone that you documented from repeated reactions. Price rises above resistance during one candle but leaves a long upper wick and closes back below the zone. At that moment, the event is an attempted break, not confirmation: the close did not hold beyond the level.
In a different hypothetical sequence, a candle closes above the same zone and volume is higher than during the preceding range. Price then returns to test the zone, finds support there, and closes above it. A higher-timeframe chart also shows price beyond the broader resistance area. Those observations collectively support the breakout interpretation, while still leaving uncertainty about what happens next.
If the second sequence instead returns to the range and closes inside it, the predefined failure condition has occurred. The appropriate conclusion is that the original thesis is weakened or failed; do not relabel the same move as confirmed merely because the first candle had high volume.
How to compare two apparent breakouts
When two assets, or two attempts on the same asset, appear to break out, compare like with like. Use the same chart conventions and describe the level-selection method for each case. Then record the following fields:
- Where the completed candle closed relative to its level.
- How its volume compared with that asset’s own preceding range.
- Whether a retest occurred and whether the broken level held.
- Whether a higher-timeframe chart agreed.
- Whether price later returned and closed inside the old range.
Do not rank one event as objectively stronger solely because its percentage move was larger. A large move with a failed close or unreliable volume may provide less useful confirmation than a smaller move that holds a well-defined level and survives a retest.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Treating every intrabar spike as confirmation
Problem: A wick through a level is mistaken for a completed breakout.
Correction: Wait for the candle to close and record which side of the level it finished on.
Recommended Free Tools
Using a fixed volume rule everywhere
Problem: A universal multiple is applied to assets with different trading histories and venues.
Correction: Compare volume with the same asset’s preceding range, and treat the result as supporting evidence rather than proof. Consider whether the venue’s reported volume is credible.
Ignoring the retest
Problem: The initial cross is treated as decisive even when price cannot hold the broken level.
Correction: Observe whether former resistance acts as support, or former support acts as resistance. A failed retest and return into the old range are warnings.
Looking only at a very short timeframe
Problem: A small fluctuation is interpreted as a market-wide directional change.
Best Value
Correction: Check a higher timeframe suited to the intended holding period. Do not claim that one particular timeframe is universally correct.
Moving the invalidation point after a reversal
Problem: The definition of success changes after price closes back inside the range.
Correction: Write the failure condition before acting and apply it consistently.

A practical breakout worksheet
For each apparent break, capture these details before drawing a conclusion:
- Asset and venue: Identify where the price and volume data came from.
- Chart timeframes: Record the chart used for the signal and the higher timeframe used for context.
- Level description: Explain the reactions or range boundaries that led you to draw support or resistance.
- Candle result: Note whether the completed candle closed beyond the level or only wicked through it.
- Relative volume: Compare participation with the preceding range and note any concern about venue quality.
- Retest result: State whether the old level held in its new role.
- Invalidation: Write the exact return-and-close behavior that would place price back inside the former range.
This record makes your conclusion auditable. It also exposes which observation is missing instead of allowing an appealing chart pattern to fill the gap.
What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
The confirmation guidance is drawn from exchange education material describing common technical-analysis practice, not from a controlled test of a complete trading strategy. It does not establish a probability of success, a profitable holding period, or a guaranteed outcome. The wash-trading estimate comes from a 2021 study of specific unregulated exchanges and should not be generalized to all current crypto markets.
Accordingly, the most defensible conclusion is conditional: a close beyond a documented level, supportive relative volume, a successful retest, and higher-timeframe agreement make a breakout interpretation more credible than a wick that immediately fails. A close back inside the prior range is a concrete reason to reassess. The market can still invalidate either reading afterward.
