Assess a pre-revenue mining company by tracing the project’s path from exploration to production and testing every step: the quality of its resource, maturity and assumptions of its studies, funding runway, permits and rights, and ability to withstand weaker economics or delays. A promising deposit or positive study is not proof that a mine will be built or earn a profit. Keep project evidence separate from the company’s capacity to finance and execute the work still required.
Start with the issuer, asset, and disclosure regime
Before comparing projects, establish what the company owns, where the asset is, and which technical-disclosure rules apply. Read the latest annual report and material-change filings, then find the underlying technical report and its effective date. A company presentation may summarize a study, but the filed report is where its scope, assumptions, authorship, and limitations should be checked.

- Ownership: Identify the company’s actual interest in the project, any joint-venture terms, royalties, streams, options, or other interests that reduce its share of future economics.
- Jurisdiction and rules: Determine whether disclosures use SEC S-K 1300, Canadian NI 43-101, or another regime. Agnico Eagle’s 2025 annual information form and management discussion, filed in 2026, notes that some Canadian issuers using the SEC Multijurisdictional Disclosure System may continue to report under NI 43-101, and that resource and reserve information may not be comparable to similar U.S. disclosures.
- Comparable basis: Check definitions, ownership basis, cut-off assumptions, effective dates, and technical-report scope before comparing headline resource figures. A larger stated resource is not necessarily a more valuable project.
Use company filings as evidence of what that issuer disclosed, not as proof of industry-wide outcomes. Paramount Gold Nevada’s 2026 Form 10-K, its Grassy Mountain technical report, i-80 Gold’s 2025 Form 10-K, Ur-Energy’s 2022 annual-report discussion of S-K 1300 and NI 43-101 categories, and Agnico Eagle’s 2025 annual information form and management discussion filed in 2026 illustrate disclosure concepts; they are not a representative statistical sample of developers.
Distinguish exploration results, resources, and reserves
Exploration results are evidence of mineralization, not themselves a resource estimate. A resource estimate classifies material by geological confidence and applies assumptions such as cut-off criteria. A reserve is a stronger project claim: it reflects the application of modifying factors and a study framework for demonstrated economic extraction. Neither a resource nor a reserve guarantees a mine will be built, operated profitably, or produce the forecast amount.

| Disclosure category | What it tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Inferred resource | The lowest-confidence resource category in the cited issuer disclosure. | It cannot be treated as a reserve or relied on to assess economic viability or assumed to upgrade. Paramount Gold Nevada’s 2026 Form 10-K cautions that inferred material may not exist as described or be economically or legally mineable. |
| Indicated resource | Higher confidence than inferred, but lower confidence than measured, in the cited disclosure. | It is not a reserve and does not guarantee eventual reserve conversion or extraction. |
| Measured resource | Higher geological confidence than indicated in the cited disclosure. | Even measured material is not automatically a reserve or proof of profitable production. |
| Mineral reserve | An estimate reflecting modifying factors and demonstrated economic extraction under a study framework. | It remains an estimate dependent on assumptions, not a guarantee of realized production or profit. |
Paramount Gold Nevada’s SEC-filed 2026 Form 10-K states: “Mineral Resources that are not Mineral Reserves do not have demonstrated economic viability.” That is company filing language, not a statement by an individual spokesperson. For U.S. investors, check the issuer’s terminology against S-K 1300 definitions and the relevant technical report.
Judge study maturity and how fragile the economics are
Identify whether the project case is an early assessment, pre-feasibility study, or feasibility study, and whether a current technical report supports it. A more mature study can narrow uncertainty, but its label alone does not establish that financing, permits, construction, or production will follow.

Read what the model actually assumes
Check the report’s effective date and qualified-person sign-off, as well as ownership interest, mine plan, metallurgy and recovery assumptions, infrastructure requirements, capital and operating estimates, taxes and royalties, closure costs, and sensitivity tables. Note which parts are conceptual or rely on inferred material. Verify that a company’s public summary reconciles with the filed report and that key inputs remain relevant to the report date.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Estimates are project-specific. For example, Paramount Gold Nevada’s 2026 Grassy Mountain feasibility technical report gives a feasibility-level capital-cost estimate with ±15% confidence and includes a 10% contingency. Those figures describe that project’s estimate; they are not a universal accuracy range or contingency standard for mining studies.

Stress-test the headline result
A positive net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return (IRR) is a modeled outcome under stated assumptions, not a forecast. Examine downside sensitivities for lower commodity prices or recoveries, higher construction or operating costs, schedule slippage, foreign-exchange changes, and additional capital. Record whether sensitivities are pre-tax or post-tax and the discount rate used. If the report provides no meaningful downside case, treat the headline economics as less informative rather than filling the gap with your own assumed result.
Estimate the funding runway and dilution risk
A pre-revenue company must pay for the work between its current stage and the next meaningful milestone. Map available cash and liquid investments against corporate overhead, exploration commitments, engineering, permitting, land or option payments, debt service, and the spending needed for its next study or construction decision. Compare this runway with the company’s stated timeline.
Rank #4
- Separate secured funding from intentions: Identify committed financing and distinguish it from proposed, conditional, or aspirational sources.
- Test whether the next milestone is covered: If available funds do not cover planned work and obligations through that point, identify what financing remains necessary and when it may be needed.
- Model more than one equity outcome: Estimate the share-count effect at more than one plausible financing price rather than assuming new shares can be issued at today’s price.
- Account for non-equity funding costs: For debt, streaming, royalties, or joint-venture funding, examine security, covenants, offtake economics, and how much project exposure the company gives up.
Additional capital needs and access to financing are expressly identified as risks in issuer filings, including i-80 Gold’s 2025 Form 10-K and Agnico Eagle’s 2025 annual information form and management discussion filed in 2026. Neither those disclosures nor the cited company examples establish a typical dilution rate for pre-revenue miners; the effect depends on the issuer’s financing needs and terms.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerify permits, title, environmental work, and community relationships
A corporate target date is not evidence that approvals are secured. Build a permit matrix from regulator records and the technical report, recording each approval, responsible authority, status, prerequisites, expiry or renewal terms, and the project schedule activity that depends on it. Include approvals and work still needed rather than treating a general statement that permitting is underway as a complete status report.

Check the project’s surface and mineral rights, royalties, claims, options, water rights, and access. Review reclamation bonding, tailings design, environmental baseline work, and closure liability. Identify Indigenous nations and local communities with rights or interests, what consultation is documented, any agreements or benefit-sharing commitments, and unresolved objections. Paramount Gold Nevada’s 2026 Form 10-K and i-80 Gold’s 2025 Form 10-K identify permitting, environmental regulation, community protests including by Indigenous groups, and conditions affecting foreign operations among the uncertainties that can affect a project.
Compare companies on consistent project and financing measures
When evaluating multiple issuers, use the same axes and comparable assumptions. Do not rank projects by contained metal alone. Compare resource category and reserve conversion, study stage and effective date, jurisdiction and permitting path, infrastructure and metallurgy, capital intensity and operating-cost sensitivities, funding runway and fully diluted share count, ownership and encumbrances, commodity and currency exposure, and execution record. Align ownership basis, cut-off grade and price assumptions, recovery, throughput, mine life, and study date wherever the disclosures allow.
Use red flags as prompts to verify, not as automatic verdicts
- Promotional materials emphasize inferred resources or contained metal but obscure study stage, cut-off assumptions, ownership, or effective date.
- A headline economic result depends on commodity-price or recovery assumptions without meaningful downside sensitivity.
- Cash and committed capital do not appear sufficient for the next milestone, while company materials imply a fully funded path.
- A permit schedule omits approvals, environmental work, consultation, or dependencies on agencies and other parties.
- A technical report is old, key inputs have changed, or issuer summaries cannot be reconciled with the filed report.
These flags point to questions that need evidence; any one of them is not, by itself, a prediction of project failure. The cited filings do not establish a generalizable probability that pre-revenue mining companies reach production or an average permitting duration. Avoid substituting invented industry averages for issuer- and project-specific analysis.
