The Capricornian’s Standard home insurance is a sum-insured policy: you choose building and contents amounts, and the cover is subject to the policy’s definitions, limits and exclusions. The Capricornian distributes it; Insurance Australia Limited issues it under the CGU brand. Standard may suit people who want building, contents or combined cover, but a useful decision depends on your replacement-cost estimates, excesses and the current policy documents—not the event list alone.
What this review can—and cannot—establish
The Capricornian’s current product page describes Standard and Plus options for buildings, contents or both, with cover for listed events including fire, theft, storm and flood, subject to terms. Its public description is not the insurance contract. The official Key Facts Sheets dated 24 February 2025 are summaries, and the current full Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Premium, Excess and Discounts Guide were not available for verification here. Check the current PDS, certificate of insurance and applicable guides before buying or relying on a particular limit or exclusion. The Capricornian’s home insurance page links to the current documents. The accessible 2023 booklet appears to describe an earlier First Choice Home product, so it should not be treated as the current contract.

CHOICE’s public profile identifies the policy as sum-insured cover. It says the insurer does not share price data, and the numerical ratings and recommendation fields are available to members. Public information therefore does not establish whether the policy is cheap, expensive or better value than alternatives.
How Standard differs from Plus
The following are headline descriptions from The Capricornian’s current product page, not a substitute for the policy wording. Limits, triggers, eligibility and claim conditions need confirmation in the current documents.
#1 Best Overall
| Feature | Standard | Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary accommodation | Advertised for up to 12 months after a covered event. | Advertised for up to two years after a covered event. |
| Building safety net | No additional safety net stated on the product page. | Advertised 25% safety net above the building sum insured. |
| Accidental damage to contents | Optional. | Included automatically. |
| Motor burnout for contents | Optional. | Included automatically. |
| Food spoilage for contents | Up to $500. | Up to $2,000. |
| Landscaping replacement | Up to $1,500, according to the 24 February 2025 Building Key Facts Sheet. | Up to $3,000, according to the 24 February 2025 Building Key Facts Sheet. |
For the contents options, the page says motor burnout applies to motors up to 15 years old if they are not under warranty or used in a business. That is a summary; confirm the current eligibility rules and exclusions before relying on it. The 2025 Key Facts Sheets also state a 21-day cooling-off period when no claim has been made. Read the current sheet and contract for the applicable conditions.
What events and benefits are described?
The Capricornian’s current page lists fire, including bushfire; theft and vandalism; flood and rainwater run-off; storm; storm surge; and tsunami. It specifically excludes action of the sea, such as tides and waves. A listed event does not by itself establish that a particular loss is covered: definitions, waiting periods, excesses, exclusions and the circumstances of the damage matter. The public CHOICE profile lists a 14-day flood waiting period and restrictions involving water escaping from shower recesses or bases. Confirm those details against the current PDS and your certificate, since the full current wording could not be verified.
Rank #2
For combined buildings and contents cover, the product page advertises temporary accommodation after a covered event, emergency repairs, visitor belongings up to $2,500 and legal liability up to $20 million, subject to policy terms and limits. The 2025 Contents Key Facts Sheet also states a $20 million legal liability limit. The page distinguishes where liability cover applies: building liability is described for incidents at home, while contents liability may apply away from home within Australia. Check the contract for the precise scope.

Contents cover has important item limits. The page states that works of art, collections, jewellery and watches share a combined $2,500 limit under general contents unless valuable contents cover is selected. Optional portable contents is described as covering specified items outside the home, normally up to $10,000 per item unless separately listed for more; geographic and item-use exclusions apply. If an item is valuable or often taken away from home, check whether it must be specified and whether the relevant optional cover applies.
How to choose sums insured without guessing
Estimate the building amount
Choose a building sum insured that reflects the cost of rebuilding, not the home’s sale price or land value. The product page’s calculator is a guide, and The Capricornian says customers remain responsible for choosing enough cover. Consider whether the estimate accounts for the home’s construction, size, features and likely rebuilding costs. Plus’s advertised 25% safety net may provide an additional amount above the building sum insured in qualifying circumstances, but it does not replace selecting a realistic base amount; check the policy wording for how the safety net works.
Value contents at replacement cost
The official Contents Key Facts Sheet recommends estimating possessions by what it would cost to replace them. Make an inventory room by room, include everyday items as well as electronics, clothing and furniture, and separately identify goods that could fall under a valuables sublimit. The sheet warns that inadequate contents cover can result in underinsurance.

Ask about items in storage
If you are putting contents into storage, notify The Capricornian and obtain confirmation that the items and location are accepted under the current terms. The product page indicates storage cover may require prior notice and acceptance, and that valuable contents are not covered while stored. Do not assume ordinary contents cover automatically follows belongings into storage.
What to compare before deciding
There is no reliable public premium comparison for this policy. Get an address-specific quote and compare the same cover settings across insurers; a premium alone is not meaningful if the sums insured, options or excesses differ.
Best Value
- Rebuilding amount: Compare the building sum insured and whether any safety net applies, including its conditions.
- Contents and valuables: Check the contents amount, category sublimits and whether valuable or portable contents cover is needed.
- Events and restrictions: Read event definitions, waiting periods, exclusions and any restrictions relevant to your home or belongings.
- Standard versus Plus: Include the cost of optional Standard benefits when comparing them with features included in Plus.
- Excesses: Check the basic and event-specific excesses. The Key Facts Sheets warn that more than one excess may apply.
- Accommodation: Compare duration, caps and conditions for temporary accommodation, rather than duration alone.
- Annual premium: Use a quote for your address and chosen cover, and compare it alongside the limits and excesses above.
Who might find Standard a fit?
Standard is worth considering if its selected building and contents amounts meet your needs and you are comfortable adding any optional benefits you want. It may be less suitable if you need Plus’s advertised safety net or longer temporary accommodation period, or if accidental damage and motor burnout are important and their optional Standard premiums reduce the difference. Whether either tier is worthwhile depends on your quote and the complete terms, which public information alone cannot settle.
