Assess an AI device as a complete system, not as a gadget. Examine its sensors, on-device software, companion app, account, home or office network, cloud services, integrations and vendor support. Map what the device senses and infers, where data goes, who can access it, how long it is retained, how it can be deleted, how the device is secured and updated, and what could happen if an attacker or an algorithm makes a mistake. Then reduce exposure before connecting sensitive accounts and reassess whenever software, integrations, household members or vendor support changes.
Why AI devices need a system-level risk assessment
An AI-enabled camera, speaker, wearable, robot or appliance combines several trust boundaries. A microphone or camera can capture people who never opened an account; local software may convert raw signals into transcripts, labels or behavioral profiles; a mobile app and cloud account can expose history; integrations can issue commands; and the vendor controls updates and data practices. A weakness in any layer can change the risk of the whole product.

NIST describes IoT cybersecurity and privacy as lifecycle concerns because connected products interact with the physical world and can create risks unlike conventional computers. AI adds another layer: models can infer sensitive characteristics, make people identifiable again from seemingly harmless data, or amplify tracking and surveillance. For a lock, oven, medical device or other actuator, unauthorized commands and unsafe failures matter as much as data exposure.
Adoption makes these questions practical rather than theoretical. Parks Associates estimated that 45% of U.S. households with internet had at least one smart-home device in 2024 and 18% had six or more. Those figures were reported in NIST SP 1343, which surveyed 401 U.S. smart-home users across five device categories; the sample is not a population-representative estimate of all owners. Read the NIST SP 1343 survey.

1. Define the use, people and credible harms
Write down what the device will do before judging whether its safeguards are adequate. A device used in a private bedroom, a child’s room, a workplace or an entryway has a different exposure profile from one used in an empty garage. Include visitors, neighbors, employees, children and household members who may be recorded without controlling the account.
Describe the consequences, not just the features
- Information exposure: voice recordings, video, location, health measurements, routines, contacts, purchase history or inferred traits could be disclosed.
- Unauthorized control: someone could unlock a door, disarm an alarm, change a thermostat, operate an appliance, access a vehicle or trigger a connected service.
- Incorrect inference: an AI system could misidentify a person, infer a sensitive characteristic incorrectly or make a consequential recommendation from poor data.
- Surveillance and re-identification: combined sensor data may reveal identities, relationships, movements or habits even when individual fields seem innocuous.
- Availability and safety: an outage, malicious command or model failure could prevent access, interrupt care or create a physical hazard.
Rate each harm by who could be affected, how likely the event is and how severe the result would be. FTC guidance says reasonable security depends on a product’s purpose, the information it collects and shares, and the level and likelihood of risk. See the FTC’s business guidance on IoT security.
2. Map every component and data flow
Make an inventory that follows data from the physical environment to every recipient. Do not stop at the device’s privacy label or the mobile app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Layer | Questions to answer | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| Physical device | Which microphones, cameras, radios, location sensors, biometric sensors or other inputs are present? Are they always powered? | Model and hardware version; indicator lights; physical shutters or microphone switches; reset behavior. |
| Local processing | What is analyzed on the device, and what stops working without an internet connection? | Vendor documentation identifying on-device recognition, storage and offline controls. |
| App and account | What histories, permissions, contacts and connected accounts can a user view or change? | Account roles, login options, export and deletion paths, notification settings. |
| Cloud backend | Which raw data, transcripts, images, embeddings or inferences leave the device? In which regions are they stored? | Privacy notice, retention schedule, deletion terms and descriptions of model-improvement use. |
| People and organizations | Can contractors, support staff, advertisers, partners or law-enforcement recipients access data? | Named recipient categories, human-review statements and disclosure process. |
| Network and integrations | Which router, phones, hubs, voice services, automation platforms or APIs can communicate with it? | Ports or protocols where documented, permissions, commands exchanged and access logs. |
Distinguish collection, inference and sharing
List both what the sensors capture and what the model derives. A camera may collect images but infer identities, occupancy, age or emotions; a microphone may collect speech but infer intent, health or household routines. For each item, note whether processing is local, sent to a vendor server, shared with a third party, reviewed by a person, retained for a stated period, deleted on request or used to improve models.
Voice systems deserve particular care. The FTC warns that wake-word systems can mishear, that recordings are usually sent to manufacturers’ servers, and that employees at some manufacturers have listened to recordings in certain circumstances. Controls and policies differ by product. Use the FTC’s voice-assistant privacy guidance to check the actual model and account settings rather than assuming another product’s controls exist.
3. Inspect defaults before connecting sensitive accounts
Complete the initial setup with low-risk data. Read the current product documentation and open every privacy, security and sharing screen before linking email, calendars, payments, door locks, health services or work accounts.

Controls to verify
- Account protection: a unique password or passphrase, multifactor authentication and separate roles for household or staff members.
- Recording visibility: a clear listening or recording indicator, plus a physical microphone or camera control where the device supports it.
- History management: a view of recordings or events, individual and bulk deletion, and automatic deletion with a selectable period if offered.
- Permission boundaries: limits on which people, apps and services can read data or issue commands.
- Purchase and high-impact actions: confirmation requirements or the ability to disable voice purchases, unlock commands and other irreversible operations.
- Reset and removal: what a factory reset erases, how to remove the device from the account and how to revoke integrations when you sell or recycle it.
Do not infer that a control exists because a competing product advertises it. If the manual, app and account do not clearly expose a setting, mark it as unknown and treat the uncertainty as part of the decision.

4. Evaluate security evidence and support life
A privacy statement describes intended data practices; it does not prove that authentication, encryption or update mechanisms work as described. Look for operational evidence in setup guides, security documentation, release notes and a vulnerability-reporting channel.
Questions about the security design
- Are credentials unique per device, and does setup force a password change from any factory default?
- Is data encrypted in transit and at rest, and are keys or tokens protected from ordinary users?
- Are local interfaces, remote administration and diagnostic services disabled unless needed?
- Does the app show active sessions, sign-ins or access logs so unfamiliar access can be investigated?
- Can the vendor deliver patches securely, and are updates automatic, user-approved or unsupported?
- Is there a published support duration, a process for reporting vulnerabilities and a response commitment?
Find the end-of-support consequence
Determine the date or condition under which security updates stop and what happens then. A product that still performs locally may remain exposed if its cloud account, app or network service is no longer patched. FTC consumer advice recommends keeping devices and apps updated and disconnecting old devices; FTC business guidance recommends considering automatic patches and delivering them securely. Read the FTC home-device security guide.
If the vendor does not state a support period or end-of-support behavior, record that omission. It is not proof of a breach, but it makes the long-term risk harder to manage and should lower the amount of sensitive access you grant.
5. Secure the network and integrations
The network is part of the device’s security boundary. The FTC calls the router “the key to privacy in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) world” in its consumer guide. A router can improve segmentation and access control, but buying new hardware is not necessary for every household and a router cannot solve weak device, account, vendor or AI-inference controls.

Replace the router’s administrator credentials and every device password that is not unique. Use long, unique credentials stored in a password manager.
- Enable current encryption. Use the strongest wireless encryption supported by the router and devices; avoid open networks for connected equipment.
- Update the router, device and app. Turn on automatic updates where trustworthy and available, and check release notes when updates are manual.
- Disable unnecessary exposure. Turn off remote administration, unused radios, discovery features, cloud services and integrations that are not required for the stated use.
- Segment when practical. Put smart-home equipment on a guest or separate network if the router supports it, while confirming that required local controls still work.
- Review logs. For cameras and similar products, investigate unfamiliar access entries, new sessions or unexpected data transfers. The FTC specifically advises checking IP-camera access logs.
Audit integrations as separate data users
For every connected service, document what it can read, what commands it can send, which account owns the connection and how to revoke it. Remove a service when its benefit is marginal. An integration can expand the attack surface even when the original device has strong controls, because a compromised partner account may be able to trigger actions or retrieve history.

6. Account for AI-specific inference and physical effects
Inference can be more sensitive than the raw signal
AI models combine repeated observations and context. A series of harmless occupancy events can reveal work schedules; voice characteristics can be used for identification; movement, sleep or pulse patterns can expose health information. Ask whether the vendor stores intermediate representations such as embeddings, whether users can delete inferences as well as source files, and whether data is used to train or improve models.
NIST’s Cybersecurity, Privacy, and AI guidance discusses privacy and cybersecurity risks from AI, including inference and re-identification. Treat a vague statement such as “we may improve services” as an unresolved data-use question until the product documentation identifies the data, recipients and retention period.
Physical actions require fail-safe planning
For devices that unlock doors, control heat or cooking, operate machinery, dispense medication or affect a person’s safety, assess both malicious and accidental commands. Use confirmation for high-impact actions, restrict who can issue them, keep a manual fallback, and test behavior during internet loss, low battery, sensor failure and an incorrect recognition. Do not allow a convenience integration to become the only way to unlock, call for help or shut down a hazardous appliance.
How to compare two AI devices without guessing
Use the same worksheet for every candidate and separate documented facts from unknowns. Missing information is uncertainty, not evidence that a vendor is breaching privacy.
| Comparison axis | Record for each device | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Data | Sensor types; inferred data; local versus cloud processing; recipients; retention; deletion; optional uses; human access. | Does the device collect and retain only what the use requires? |
| Control | Opt-outs; indicators or hardware switches; account permissions; export and deletion tools; reset behavior. | Can people meaningfully stop collection, review history and remove their data? |
| Security | Unique credentials; multifactor authentication; encryption; secure setup; exposed interfaces; integrations; access logs. | Are preventive and detective controls appropriate to the harm? |
| Support | Update delivery; stated support duration; vulnerability contact; response process; end-of-support behavior. | Will protection continue for the period you expect to use it? |
| Context and impact | Visitors, children, employees and household members exposed; sensitive spaces; consequences of misuse or failure. | Is the remaining risk acceptable for this location and population? |
| Transparency | Clarity of privacy statements, defaults, data flows and support commitments; unresolved questions. | Can you verify the claims for the exact model, region, firmware and account tier? |
Choose the option with the smallest unacceptable risk, not simply the longest feature list. If a device controls a lock or safety-critical appliance, give consequence and recovery capability more weight than convenience.
A practical setup and reduction checklist

- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
- Record the model, firmware, app version, account owner and every person who needs access.
- Read the current privacy, security, retention and support information for that exact model and region.
- Set a unique account password and multifactor authentication; remove unnecessary administrators.
- Review microphone, camera, location, contact, purchase and integration permissions before enabling them.
- Turn on recording indicators and physical controls where available; set the shortest practical retention and automatic deletion period.
- Update the device, app and router before connecting sensitive services.
- Change default credentials, enable wireless encryption and disable unused remote-management or cloud features.
- Place the device on a separate or guest network when compatible with required functions.
- Connect only essential services, document their permissions and test revocation.
- Test normal operation, offline behavior, account recovery, reset and manual safety fallbacks.
- Review access logs and account sessions after setup and whenever behavior changes.
Keep a short record of the settings and the vendor’s stated support end date. That makes later changes visible instead of relying on memory.
When to reassess or remove the device
Repeat the assessment after a firmware or app update, a new integration, an account or household change, a security notice, a change in the monitored space or a change in who may be harmed. Recheck whether an update altered retention, sharing, permissions or model behavior.
If the vendor stops providing security updates, cannot explain where data goes, removes deletion or access controls, or leaves a high-impact integration exposed, disconnect the device from the network and revoke its account tokens while you decide whether to replace it. Remove old devices from accounts and dispose of them using the vendor’s reset and data-erasure procedure.
What this assessment can and cannot establish
Product documentation and privacy policies show a vendor’s stated practice, not independent proof that implementation matches it. Verify the current model, firmware, account settings and geographic terms. FTC recommendations are U.S. consumer and business guidance; legal duties and available controls differ by jurisdiction and device category.
No checklist can guarantee that an AI model is accurate or that a vendor will never suffer a breach. The goal is to make data flows visible, limit unnecessary collection and access, prepare for failure, and decide whether the remaining risk fits the people and physical spaces involved.
