1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLiquidation risk is not a single Bitcoin price. It is the point at which a treasury’s financing terms, collateral value, cash obligations and ability to execute a sale collide. To find that point, map every BTC-backed obligation, calculate each facility’s trigger price, forecast cash through the financing horizon, and then rerun the analysis with gaps, wider spreads, thin order books and venue outages. Set escalation levels and pre-authorized actions before a margin call arrives.
A price-only calculation can be dangerously optimistic. A company may be forced to sell BTC because payroll, tax, interest or principal payments consume its cash even when no lender has issued a margin call. Conversely, a facility can show a comfortable mark-to-market cushion that disappears when a large sale moves the market or a venue restricts risk-reducing orders.

What liquidation risk means in a corporate Bitcoin treasury
Liquidation risk is the chance that the company must dispose of Bitcoin, collateral or other assets on unfavorable terms to satisfy a lender, derivatives counterparty, repurchase agreement, covenant or operating obligation. The sale can be automatic, such as a contractual collateral liquidation, or discretionary, such as management selling BTC to fund a cash shortfall.

Assess the risk on three connected layers:
- Contractual layer: loan-to-value limits, maintenance margins, collateral haircuts, cure periods, notice rights, covenants and automatic-sale language.
- Cash layer: fiat on hand, committed undrawn facilities and the timing of payroll, taxes, interest, principal, capital expenditure and other payments.
- Market layer: BTC price gaps, order-book depth, bid-ask spreads, trading-hour availability, venue outages, withdrawal limits and the size of the proposed sale relative to daily volume.
The usable risk limit is the tightest result from those layers. A lender’s threshold may be far away while the operating cash forecast requires a sale next week; or cash may be ample while a sharp overnight move breaches a maintenance ratio before staff can post collateral.

Keep the analysis specific to each legal entity, facility, custodian and venue. Cross-guarantees, pledged shares, segregated wallets and restrictions on moving collateral can make a group-level balance sheet look safer than the entity that actually owes the money.
Step 1: Inventory every mechanism that can force a sale
Start with executed agreements and current lender or counterparty notices, not a summarized debt schedule. For every exposure, record the legal borrower, lender, maturity, governing law, collateral account, permitted assets and the person who can issue or receive a notice.
BTC-backed loans and margin facilities
Capture principal, accrued interest, valuation time, approved price sources, collateral haircuts, initial margin, maintenance margin, top-up rules, cure period and the lender’s right to liquidate. Note whether a cure clock runs continuously or only after a formal notice, and whether the lender may sell without further consent once the clock expires.
Derivatives and options
List variation-margin frequency, intraday calls, eligible collateral, independent amounts, close-out netting and any right to terminate after a ratings, liquidity or covenant event. A derivatives position can create a cash call even when the underlying BTC remains in custody and is not pledged to a lender.
Convertibles, repurchase terms and other contracts
Review convertible debt for security interests, minimum-cash covenants, change-of-control clauses and events that accelerate repayment. Repurchase or buyback terms can require cash or collateral at a time when the treasury is already under stress. Include bilateral promises that are not labelled “margin” but still permit set-off, close-out or collateral sale.
Build a trigger register
For each contract, document:
- The metric that causes a breach, such as LTV, collateral ratio, minimum net worth or minimum cash.
- The exact valuation source, time zone, averaging period and haircut used in the calculation.
- The breach, notice, cure and liquidation thresholds, including whether they are tested continuously, hourly, daily or only on a reporting date.
- Which wallets, securities or fiat balances are eligible collateral and how quickly they can be transferred.
- Notice channels, response deadlines, lender discretion, automatic rights and the people authorized to act.
- Cross-default, cross-collateralization and concentration provisions that can pull another facility into the event.
Do not rely on a single “margin-call price” in the treasury system. One company can have several thresholds, each using a different haircut, price source and cure period.
Step 2: Calculate the BTC price at each contractual threshold
Use eligible collateral value rather than an unadjusted exchange mark. If a facility holds Q BTC, the BTC price is P, the collateral haircut is h, and debt including accrued interest is D, then:

P = D × R ÷ [Q × (1 − h)]
For an LTV threshold L, use:
P = D ÷ [Q × (1 − h) × L]
Adjust the debt input for interest accrual, fees, draws, repayments and any collateral that is already unavailable. Recalculate when the lender’s price source, haircut or eligible-wallet balance changes. If more than one asset is pledged, model each asset’s haircut and liquidation time separately rather than treating the basket as one liquid instrument.
A documented facility example: USBC, Inc., 2026
USBC, Inc. reported a facility with an initial margin ratio of 150%, which is approximately a 66.7% maximum LTV. The same terms state that a 130% ratio triggers a margin call and that a 120% ratio can permit collateral liquidation if the deficiency is not cured. These figures illustrate how one agreement can have an operating cushion, a call threshold and a liquidation-rights threshold; they are not a universal crypto-lending standard.
| Facility term | USBC, Inc. 2026 example | Meaning for the model |
|---|---|---|
| Initial margin ratio | 150% | Collateral is 1.5 times the debt at inception under the stated terms. |
| Approximate maximum LTV | 66.7% | Debt is about two-thirds of eligible collateral value at the corresponding limit. |
| Margin-call ratio | 130% | A call can occur when eligible collateral falls to 1.3 times debt. |
| Liquidation-rights ratio | 120% | If the deficiency is not cured, the agreement can permit collateral liquidation at this level. |
Convert the ratios into prices using the facility’s actual debt, BTC quantity, haircut and valuation convention. A ratio shown in a term sheet is not enough to determine a dollar trigger without those inputs.

Calculate the price at the beginning and end of every cure period. A facility that gives four hours to cure can move through several thresholds before a bank transfer, collateral release or board approval completes. Run an additional case in which BTC opens below the call level after an overnight move; the first observable price may already be at or below the liquidation-rights level.
Step 3: Test whether cash can carry the treasury without selling BTC
Prepare a rolling cash forecast covering at least the longest financing horizon and the shortest contractual cure period. Use actual payment dates, not monthly averages. Include:
- Payroll, payroll taxes and other mandatory employment costs.
- Corporate income, payroll, sales, property and withholding taxes.
- Interest, scheduled principal, commitment fees and margin or variation calls.
- Capital expenditure, hosting, energy, equipment, leases and other operating commitments.
- Custody, legal, audit, insurance and transaction costs that rise during a stress event.
- Minimum operating balances required by banks, lenders or internal policy.
Set liquid fiat beside committed undrawn facilities, then subtract stressed outflows and any amount that cannot be drawn quickly because of notice, covenant or collateral conditions. Treat an undrawn line as available only after confirming its borrowing base, lender discretion, documentation and operational funding time.
The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and other U.S. banking agencies said in their 2023 Interagency Policy Statement on Funding and Liquidity Risk Management that stress-test outcomes should identify and quantify potential liquidity strain and analyze effects on cash flows, liquidity position, profitability and solvency. Apply that principle to the treasury: every scenario should end with a quantified cash balance, borrowing capacity and time-to-action.
Measure cash days and the first unavoidable sale
Calculate how many days the company can meet unavoidable payments using cash and confirmed facilities without selling BTC. Then identify the first date on which the forecast falls below the approved minimum. That date may precede a formal margin call. If a sale is required, model the amount of BTC needed after fees and slippage, not the amount implied by a spot price multiplied by holdings.

Separate restricted and usable cash
Exclude trapped subsidiary cash, customer funds, pledged deposits, tax-reserved balances and fiat that cannot reach the collateral account within the cure period. Reconcile bank, custodian and exchange balances daily during stress; a dashboard that counts inaccessible cash creates false comfort.
Step 4: Stress BTC price and market liquidity together
A liquidation model that lowers BTC’s price but leaves execution conditions unchanged understates risk. The 2026 filing by MARA describes stressed conditions in which order books can thin, spreads can widen, spot sales or hedges may not be completed promptly, and exchanges may restrict risk-reducing orders. Model those effects explicitly.
Price paths to include
- An overnight gap that skips the warning level and opens below a margin-call threshold.
- A multi-day decline with repeated margin calls and rising accrued interest.
- A sharp recovery after a forced sale, showing the opportunity cost of selling under pressure.
- A choppy path that repeatedly crosses a trigger and creates fees, spread costs and operational fatigue.
Execution conditions to include
- Wider bid-ask spreads and lower fill quality as order-book depth shrinks.
- A sale split across venues, with transfer delays, withdrawal limits and different collateral prices.
- Venue outage, custody-access failure, API interruption or a temporary ban on market orders.
- Hedge slippage, basis risk and a counterparty unable to honor a collateral or settlement obligation.
- Different liquidation fractions, from a small top-up sale to disposal of the entire pledged balance.
For each case, calculate net proceeds as the execution value less spread, market impact, trading fees, transfer costs, taxes where applicable and any lender fee. Use an execution curve or conservative price bands rather than assuming every coin sells at the last quoted mark. Compare the sale size with the market’s observable volume and record the maximum share of daily volume the treasury is willing to use.

Model correlated failures
Stress the combination that matters operationally: BTC falls, collateral haircuts increase, a lender calls for cash, and the preferred venue is unavailable. Also test a counterparty concentration event in which several facilities demand collateral at once. The objective is not to predict a particular crash; it is to reveal whether the treasury has enough time, authority and liquidity to act when normal assumptions fail.
Step 5: Set buffers and escalation triggers before stress
Choose limits that leave time for a real response, not merely enough room to avoid a breach in a spreadsheet. The dashboard should show, at minimum:
- Current and stressed LTV and collateral ratio for every facility.
- Collateral excess in BTC and fiat terms after each haircut.
- Cash days to the next unavoidable payment and cash days through the financing horizon.
- Committed undrawn capacity, borrowing-base headroom and time to draw.
- Net proceeds from a defined BTC sale under current and stressed slippage.
- Aggregate exposure by lender, custodian, exchange and legal entity.
- Maximum planned sale as a share of observable daily market volume.
- Time remaining to each notice, cure and liquidation deadline.
Use three operating states, with numeric levels approved in policy and tied to owners:
Green: normal operation
All ratios remain above internal cushions, cash covers the forecast horizon, custody access is tested and no counterparty concentration limit is exceeded. Treasury continues routine monitoring and records a current contingency plan.

An internal cushion is consumed, a stress case produces a shortfall, cash falls toward the minimum, or market depth makes a planned sale too large. The treasurer alerts the CFO, confirms collateral availability, pauses discretionary BTC purchases, refreshes lender and venue contacts, and obtains legal, tax and accounting review for the available actions.

Red: execute the playbook
A contractual call is received, a threshold is breached, the cash forecast shows an unavoidable shortfall, or the stressed execution test cannot meet a cure deadline. The named incident leader follows the pre-approved sequence, documents decisions and reports to the CFO and board or risk committee without waiting for a routine meeting.
Each trigger needs a timestamp, data source, responsible owner, deadline, escalation path and evidence that the action was completed. Avoid triggers based only on a headline BTC price; pair every price level with collateral, cash and execution conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: Pre-authorize a response playbook
Before a crisis, obtain the legal, tax, accounting, custody and board approvals required for each action. A playbook should state who can act, up to what amount, through which venue and with what reporting.
- Validate the event. Reconcile the lender’s calculation against the contract, price source, debt balance, haircut and eligible collateral. Confirm whether the notice is valid and when the cure clock expires.
- Secure operational access. Verify wallet keys, exchange permissions, withdrawal limits, bank signatories, backup communications and the ability to move eligible collateral within the deadline.
- Raise non-BTC liquidity first when practical. Draw an available facility, release approved fiat, collect receivables or defer discretionary spending if those steps are contractually and operationally available.
- Post additional collateral. Use only assets permitted by the agreement, checking whether the transfer itself can be completed before the deadline and whether posting one asset creates a new concentration risk.
- Refinance or amend terms. Request a waiver, longer cure period, lower haircut or new borrowing base while the company still has negotiating leverage. Record lender consent in writing.
- Hedge or reduce exposure. Use an approved hedge only after checking basis, margin, counterparty and liquidity consequences. A hedge that creates a new cash call does not solve the underlying problem.
- Reduce leverage. Repay principal when cash and facilities permit, prioritizing the exposure with the shortest cure period, highest liquidation cost or greatest counterparty concentration.
- Sell BTC in measured stages. Use pre-approved limits, venue diversification and execution instructions. Recalculate remaining LTV, cash runway and market impact after every tranche rather than assuming the original price.
- Document and communicate. Preserve notices, prices, approvals, fills, fees, tax lots and post-action ratios. Notify the board or risk committee and affected auditors, insurers or regulators as required.
Continuous margining and auto-liquidation are specifically discussed as design issues in a 2026 CFTC/Federal Register notice. Assume that a counterparty may act automatically unless the executed agreement clearly provides notice and discretion.
How to compare financing and response choices
Evaluate every option against the same decision axes:
- Maximum LTV and haircuts: how much BTC value supports the debt after the lender’s discount.
- Cure period and notice: how much verified time exists to transfer cash or collateral.
- Automatic versus discretionary liquidation: whether a human can negotiate before assets are sold.
- Liquidity and slippage: whether the option depends on selling a volume the market may not absorb.
- Cash-buffer requirement: whether the action consumes operating cash or creates another margin obligation.
- Counterparty concentration: whether several facilities depend on the same bank, custodian, venue or price source.
- Governance speed: whether approvals can be obtained within the cure window, including nights, weekends and holidays.
Adding collateral can be fast but may simply move risk to another wallet or asset. Refinancing can remove an immediate trigger but introduces execution, documentation and lender-dependence risk. Hedging can reduce price sensitivity but requires collateral, reliable counterparties and a market that remains open. Selling BTC provides direct deleveraging but exposes the company to slippage, taxes and the possibility of selling into a temporary dislocation. The right choice depends on the facility terms and the cash forecast at that moment.
Governance, custody and reporting
Assign one accountable executive, usually the treasurer or CFO, while separating trade approval, collateral control, custody administration and reconciliation. No single operator should be able to change a wallet address, draw a facility and sell the company’s BTC without independent checks.

The CFO, treasurer and board or risk committee should receive a dashboard that shows current exposures and the stressed results, not only a BTC price chart. Include:
Best Value
- Facility-by-facility debt, eligible collateral, LTV, collateral ratio and distance to each threshold.
- Cash balance, restricted cash, committed capacity, next payment date and cash runway.
- Stress outcomes for price gaps, market-depth deterioration, venue outage and simultaneous calls.
- Counterparty, custodian, venue and legal-entity concentrations.
- Key-management status, backup signer availability, withdrawal tests and transfer time.
- Open notices, cure deadlines, delegated authorities and the last successful rehearsal of the playbook.
Reassess after a new loan, amendment, BTC purchase or sale, custody migration, material price move, haircut change, counterparty event or liquidity disruption. A quarterly review may be insufficient when leverage is high or collateral is marked continuously.
Common failure modes and how to correct them
Using the headline BTC price as the trigger
Failure: The model divides debt by BTC holdings and ignores haircuts, accrued interest and the lender’s valuation source. Correction: Calculate eligible collateral and contractual ratios for every facility, then include a gap through the cure period.
Counting all cash as available
Failure: Restricted, trapped or operationally inaccessible balances are included in the buffer. Correction: Reconcile usable fiat by entity and test the time required to move it to the lender or trading venue.
Assuming a sale executes at the mark
Failure: The treasury treats market value as cash proceeds. Correction: Apply spread, impact, fees, transfer limits and venue outages, and cap planned sales as a share of observable volume.
Ignoring automatic rights
Failure: Management expects a negotiation even though the agreement permits continuous margining or auto-liquidation. Correction: Read the executed language, confirm notice mechanics and maintain collateral access that works outside business hours.
Waiting for the board meeting
Failure: Authorities are unclear when a call arrives overnight or on a holiday. Correction: Set delegated limits, named alternates, communication trees and a written incident procedure before the threshold is reached.
Concentrating collateral and execution
Failure: All BTC, fiat and trading permissions depend on one custodian, bank or venue. Correction: Measure concentration explicitly, maintain tested backups and verify that diversification does not violate a lender’s eligibility rules.
A practical review sequence
Run the assessment in this order so that each result feeds the next:
- Collect executed financing, custody, derivatives, repurchase and covenant documents.
- Build the trigger register and calculate threshold prices using current debt, BTC quantity, haircuts and valuation rules.
- Reconcile eligible collateral and usable cash by entity, wallet, bank and venue.
- Forecast mandatory cash flows through the longest cure period and financing horizon.
- Stress price paths together with spreads, order-book depth, outages, transfer delays and different sale sizes.
- Compare stressed proceeds and cash against every cure deadline and operating minimum.
- Set green, amber and red thresholds with owners, deadlines and escalation paths.
- Approve the response playbook, delegated authorities and legal, tax, accounting and custody checks.
- Rehearse a gap-down and venue-outage scenario, then record the time required to raise cash, post collateral and execute a controlled sale.
- Report the dashboard to management and the board or risk committee, and refresh it whenever terms, holdings or market access change.
The result should answer four operational questions at any time: which event can force a sale first, what BTC price and liquidity conditions produce it, how much cash or eligible collateral is immediately available, and who can execute the remedy before the deadline.
