Consulting usually means finite projects with defined outcomes; outsourcing or managed services usually means ongoing responsibility for running or managing client operations. Those labels are useful, but bundled contracts and inconsistent reporting mean no single revenue figure tells the whole demand story.
1. Find out what the company means by each service label
Begin with the latest annual report, investor presentation, and segment disclosures. Look for definitions of consulting, managed services, outsourcing, application operations, business-process outsourcing, cloud, infrastructure support, and systems integration. Focus on the work performed—project deliverables or an ongoing operating obligation—not just the name of a product or business unit.

Accenture offers a clear example of the distinction in its FY2025 Form 10-K: consulting revenue reflects finite, distinct projects with defined outcomes and typically specific deliverables. Managed-services revenue typically reflects ongoing, repeatable services used to transition, run, or manage client systems or business functions.

IBM’s FY2024 annual report describes services including consulting, application operations, cloud services, business-process outsourcing, security, and infrastructure support; many can be delivered wholly or partly through cloud or as-a-Service models. A cloud transformation, for example, may involve a finite implementation project followed by ongoing operations.

2. Measure the disclosed revenue mix and its growth
For each year the company reports, record consulting revenue, managed-services or outsourcing revenue, total services revenue, each category’s share of that total, and each category’s growth. Keep reported-currency and constant-currency growth separate when both are provided. Compare several years within the same company before drawing conclusions about its exposure.
Accenture’s FY2025 figures illustrate how to use a disclosed split. The company reported consulting revenue of $35.107 billion in fiscal 2025, up 6% in U.S. dollars and 5% in local currency from $33.195 billion in fiscal 2024. Managed-services revenue was $34.566 billion, up 9% in U.S. dollars and 9% in local currency from $31.701 billion. Total revenue was $69.673 billion in fiscal 2025 and $64.896 billion in fiscal 2024. These are Accenture issuer-reported results, not an industry-wide template; see its FY2025 Form 10-K.
A larger, persistent managed-services base can indicate more exposure to recurring operational work. Faster consulting growth can indicate greater sensitivity to project starts, client budgets, and discretionary transformation spending. Both readings depend on stable category definitions: acquisitions, divestitures, restatements, or changes in what a company includes in a service line can make year-to-year comparisons less meaningful.
Do not treat revenue growth as a direct measure of price or volume. Accenture says its contracts have customized service mixes and that it cannot measure how much period revenue growth is attributable to price versus volume using standard unit or rate measures. A reported split helps describe the work mix; it does not by itself explain why revenue changed.

3. Read contract terms to understand continuity and timing
Revenue categories do not tell you everything about contract economics. Check contract duration, transition periods, renewal and termination provisions, service-level obligations, pricing model, and client concentration. Consulting may be billed by time and materials, fixed fees, milestones, or deliverables. Outsourcing may be priced by time, units, volume, or a fixed amount while the provider takes ongoing responsibility for a client operation.
IBM says its services contracts can be time-and-materials, fixed-price, or fixed-price per output measure, and generally range from less than one year to five years. Those terms inform continuity and revenue timing, but do not independently establish whether a contract is consulting or outsourcing; the work obligation still matters. See IBM’s FY2024 annual report.
An older SEC-filed IT services disclosure illustrates why revenue-recognition notes are useful: it describes recognition based on work performed for time-and-materials arrangements, objective transaction measures for unit-priced work, and straight-line recognition for fixed-price work unless the delivery pattern differs. It is a historical example of contract mechanics, not a current industry rule.

4. Use bookings and backlog as clues, not forecasts
When disclosed, track new bookings or signings, backlog, book-to-bill, renewal rates, contract wins, cancellations, and remaining performance obligations. Before comparing figures, check the issuer’s definitions and scope, the measurement period, currency treatment, acquisition effects, and whether the figure is a management estimate.
Best Value
IBM defines signings as management’s initial estimate of a client’s commitment and backlog as the estimated remaining value of work expected to be recognized, after recognized revenue and adjustments. Its book-to-bill ratio compares consulting signings with consulting revenue for the same period. A rise in consulting signings may support a view that project demand is strengthening; a growing multi-year managed-services backlog may suggest operational demand and greater revenue visibility. Neither guarantees that expected work will convert into revenue. IBM’s FY2024 annual report sets out these definitions.

First compare a company with itself across years. For peer analysis, align fiscal periods and currencies, account for acquisitions and divestitures, check for restated categories, and determine whether “managed services” includes cloud operations or business-process outsourcing. Accenture notes that contract mixes are customized and that its consulting and managed-services mix differs by geography, so even a company’s own consolidated split may conceal regional variation.
Industry market totals are context, not a substitute for company disclosures. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) reported an estimated £52.6 billion in annual UK MSP-related revenue, £29.1 billion in direct GVA, 294,340 workers, and 11,492 active MSPs in its report published 12 February 2024. The study was commissioned in 2023 and primarily reflects financial reporting for work delivered and billed in 2022. DSIT calls its methodology experimental and indicative: it found no dedicated SIC code or unified definition for MSPs and used market taxonomy, company websites, accounts, and modelling. Its categories—including cloud solutions, IT infrastructure management, IT service management, and managed security—can overlap with consulting and broader outsourcing. These totals therefore should not be equated with all outsourcing demand or any one company’s revenue. See the DSIT market study.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist
- Use the company’s latest filings to identify what it counts as consulting, managed services, and outsourcing.
- Track service-line revenue, share, and growth over several years, noting currency basis and category changes.
- Read contract terms and revenue-recognition disclosures for duration, pricing, obligations, and timing.
- Use bookings, backlog, and related measures only after checking their definitions and estimate status.
- Compare peers only after aligning periods, currencies, acquisitions, and service-line scope.
