How to Assess an AI Company’s Revenue Growth, Margins, and Cash Burn

Assess an AI company by connecting four statements rather than chasing one headline metric: comparable-period revenue growth, the accounting basis of each margin, operating cash flow and its working-capital drivers, and liquidity after investment and financing. A repeatable review uses the company’s filings and reconciliations, preserves each issuer’s definitions, and treats management forecasts as assumptions—not proof.

Start with a four-part financial picture

AI is a product category, not an accounting category. A model provider, application vendor, data platform, or services-heavy integrator can have very different revenue timing, infrastructure costs, capital needs, and cash conversion. The same checklist still works when you keep the measures comparable.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Axis What to collect Question it answers
Growth Total revenue, relevant segments, recurring or subscription revenue, and the matching prior period How fast is the business expanding, and what kind of sales create that growth?
Margin GAAP gross margin, any adjusted margin, and the reconciliation How much revenue remains after delivering the product, and what costs are excluded from an adjusted figure?
Cash conversion Operating cash flow, working-capital movements, customer collections, and payment timing Is reported revenue turning into cash from ordinary operations?
Investment and liquidity Capital expenditure, capitalized software, cash, marketable securities, debt, and financing flows How much cash is available after maintaining and building the business, and how dependent is it on new financing?

Write the fiscal period and accounting basis beside every number in your notes. “Margin” without a period and label is not a usable comparison, and “burn” without a defined cash-flow measure can mean several different things.

How to assess revenue growth

Align the periods before calculating a rate

Use the same fiscal quarters or the same fiscal years for both companies. A calendar-year comparison can be misleading when one issuer has a different year-end or a 52/53-week calendar. Calculate growth as (current-period revenue − prior-period revenue) ÷ prior-period revenue, then retain the reported currency and period. Do not compare a company’s quarter with another company’s full year, or a recently acquired business with a pre-acquisition period, without clearly separating the effects.

Read the income statement and the revenue footnote together. Look for changes in accounting policy, contract modifications, acquisitions, divestitures, foreign-exchange translation, and usage-based billing. Those items can change the reported rate without representing a change in underlying demand.

Separate total revenue from the revenue that matters to the model

AI companies often combine subscriptions, consumption or usage fees, professional services, implementation, hardware, and support. Total revenue is the required starting point, but composition determines durability and gross margin. Record each disclosed category, its growth, and its share of total sales.

  • Subscription or recurring revenue: examine renewal, expansion, backlog or remaining performance obligations when disclosed. Recurring does not automatically mean profitable; hosting and inference costs may rise with usage.
  • Usage-based revenue: determine whether growth reflects more customers, more activity per customer, price changes, or a temporary workload spike.
  • Professional services: identify whether services are enabling product adoption or compensating for weak product demand. Services can carry a different margin and cash-collection pattern.
  • Hardware or pass-through items: check whether a large sales increase adds little gross profit because the company records a low-margin resale.

When a company reports a segment or subscription figure separately, keep it beside total revenue instead of substituting one for the other. A fast-growing subscription line can coexist with flat total revenue if another category is shrinking.

Find the operational explanation for the reported rate

Management’s discussion should explain volume, price, customer count, deal size, geographic mix, churn, and sales capacity. Test that explanation against deferred revenue, remaining performance obligations, accounts receivable, and contract assets. A large contract signed near period-end may increase obligations or receivables without producing equivalent cash immediately.

Compare sequential growth with year-over-year growth. Sequential acceleration can be seasonal, while a year-over-year slowdown can reflect a difficult comparison. Plot at least six to eight quarters when available and mark acquisitions, major product launches, pricing changes, and sales-force reductions on the same timeline.

Check whether customers are paying

Revenue is recognized under accrual accounting; collections appear in cash flow and balance-sheet changes. Inspect accounts receivable, allowance for credit losses, deferred revenue, and the cash-flow statement’s working-capital reconciliation. A rise in receivables that outpaces sales can signal longer payment terms, concentrated customers, billing disputes, or collection risk. A rise in deferred revenue can be positive evidence of cash received before delivery, but it is not revenue yet.

C3 AI identifies customer collections for subscription and professional services as its largest source of operating cash. That disclosure tells you which working-capital line deserves close attention: compare collections with reported sales and investigate any widening gap rather than assuming growth is self-funding.

How to read margins without mixing accounting bases

Put GAAP gross margin first

Gross margin is (revenue − cost of revenue) ÷ revenue. Start with GAAP because it is the standardized measure in the financial statements. Cost of revenue may include cloud hosting, model-inference costs, data licensing, customer support, implementation labor, depreciation, and allocated facilities. The exact mix varies, so read the cost-of-revenue footnote.

Track both the percentage and the dollar gross profit. A company can increase gross profit dollars while its margin percentage falls during an aggressive usage or customer-acquisition phase. Conversely, a margin percentage can improve because low-margin services declined, even if the product business did not become more efficient.

Use adjusted margins only with the reconciliation

Non-GAAP or adjusted gross margin may exclude stock-based compensation, depreciation, amortization, restructuring, or other costs. Those exclusions can be economically significant for an AI company that relies on specialized staff, leased infrastructure, or acquired technology. Record the issuer’s definition, list every adjustment, and calculate the difference from GAAP in percentage points.

Never place a GAAP figure from one company beside a non-GAAP figure from another as if they were equivalent. Even two non-GAAP measures with similar names can exclude different costs. The reconciliation in the earnings release or filing is part of the metric.

Explain the drivers of a margin change

Ask four questions for every material movement:

  1. Did revenue mix shift toward subscriptions, usage, services, or hardware?
  2. Did hosting, GPU or other infrastructure expense rise faster than revenue?
  3. Did utilization improve, or were fixed delivery costs spread across more sales?
  4. Did the company reclassify costs or change an adjusted-metric definition?

Then compare gross margin with operating expenses. High gross margin does not guarantee a viable company if research, sales, and support costs consume the gross profit. Conversely, a temporarily low gross margin may reflect deliberate investment in infrastructure that could support future scale; the filing should provide evidence for that interpretation.

Define “cash burn” before calculating it

Operating cash flow is the starting point

Operating cash flow (OCF) is the cash generated or used by ordinary operations after the indirect statement adjusts net income for non-cash items and working-capital changes. For a loss-making company, a negative OCF is the clearest starting signal for operational cash burn. For a profitable company, positive OCF still deserves examination because working-capital timing can temporarily inflate it.

Use a trailing four-quarter OCF total or average when you need a directional run rate. Label the period and keep each quarter visible; one quarter is not a stable burn rate. A large customer prepayment, an annual bonus cycle, or a delayed vendor payment can move OCF sharply without changing the underlying economics.

Read the working-capital bridge

Break OCF into net income, non-cash adjustments, receivables, deferred revenue, payables, accrued expenses, and other operating assets and liabilities. For each item, ask whether the movement is recurring, seasonal, or a reversal. Positive cash from a temporary increase in payables is financing the business through suppliers; it is not the same as sustainable customer-funded growth.

Customer collections deserve a separate check. Reconcile billed revenue, accounts receivable, cash collections, and bad-debt provisions. If management emphasizes collections as the main operating inflow, test that statement against the cash-flow and balance-sheet data for the same period.

Calculate free cash flow using the issuer’s formula

Free cash flow (FCF) commonly means OCF minus selected investments, but there is no single mandatory definition. Vertex defines FCF as operating cash flow less purchases of property and equipment and capitalized software, and defines FCF margin as FCF divided by revenue. Preserve that formula when using Vertex’s figures; do not silently apply it to another issuer that excludes different items.

Check whether the company subtracts capital expenditures, capitalized internal-use software, capitalized implementation costs, acquisitions, or other investments. Some companies present adjusted FCF that also excludes one-time payments. Read the reconciliation alongside GAAP measures, as the issuer itself cautions.

Separate operating investment from financing

Capital expenditure and capitalized software reduce cash available to owners even when they do not appear immediately in operating expenses. Record purchases of property and equipment, construction commitments, leases, and capitalized development. An AI company may need substantial infrastructure or software investment before revenue catches up.

Financing cash inflows—equity issuance, debt draws, or convertible notes—can increase the cash balance while operating performance deteriorates. Financing outflows such as debt repayment, share repurchases, or dividends reduce liquidity but are not operating burn. Keep the three cash-flow sections separate in every model.

Company and reporting period Revenue and margin data Cash-flow and liquidity data How to use the example
C3.ai, Inc., fiscal year ended April 30, 2026 Total revenue of $250.3 million; subscription revenue of $227.1 million; GAAP gross margin of 31%; non-GAAP gross margin of 46%. These annual figures should be analyzed with the full-year cash-flow statement and reconciliation, not treated as a quarterly run rate. The separate subscription disclosure and two margin bases show why composition and accounting labels belong beside growth.
C3.ai, Inc., three months ended July 31, 2026, compared with the comparable 2025 quarter Not a revenue-growth comparison in the cited filing excerpt. Operating cash inflow of $2.072 million versus operating cash outflow of $33.535 million in the comparable 2025 quarter; cash and equivalents of $136.4 million plus marketable securities of $514.6 million at July 31, 2026. The quarter-to-quarter cash swing demonstrates volatility, while the separate liquidity components show why a balance-sheet total is not the same as cash generation.
Amplitude, Inc., year ended December 31, 2025, reported in its 2026 Form 10-K Not stated in the cited figures. Operating cash flow of $29.8 million and free cash flow of $23.5 million for 2025. Use the company’s own FCF reconciliation and period; do not infer a sector norm from this result.

C3 AI’s July 2026 filing also discusses future negative cash flows and capital requirements. That forward-looking discussion is a risk and planning input, not a guarantee of the eventual cash result. Compare it with actual OCF, investment spending, contractual obligations, and available financing.

Assess liquidity without claiming a certain runway

Inventory the assets that can actually fund operations

List cash and cash equivalents, restricted cash, marketable securities, undrawn credit facilities, and near-term maturities separately. Marketable securities may be liquid but can have price, settlement, or contractual restrictions. Restricted cash is not freely available. A company’s liquidity discussion may identify covenants, minimum cash requirements, or collateral arrangements that a simple cash total misses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not calculate runway as “cash divided by the latest quarter’s burn” and present the result as fact. A defensible scenario must state assumptions for revenue, collections, gross margin, operating expenses, capitalized software, capital expenditure, working capital, financing access, and which assets count as available liquidity.

Build three explicit scenarios

  • Base case: use management’s stated assumptions only where they are quantified, then carry forward observed seasonality and investment commitments.
  • Downside case: reduce collections or growth, hold infrastructure costs less flexible, and remove optional financing.
  • Upside case: improve collections or gross margin only when a documented contract, price change, or capacity action supports it.

For each scenario, project quarterly OCF, capital spending, financing flows, ending cash, and the date on which a minimum liquidity threshold would be breached. Show the sensitivity to a one-quarter delay in collections or a higher infrastructure bill. The result is a range under stated assumptions, not a prediction.

A repeatable filing-review workflow

  1. Collect primary documents. Download the latest annual report, quarterly report, earnings release, cash-flow statement, revenue footnote, non-GAAP reconciliation, and liquidity discussion for each company.
  2. Normalize periods. Create columns for fiscal year, quarter, year-over-year comparison, currency, and whether the period is reported or adjusted.
  3. Map revenue. Enter total revenue and every disclosed category, then note acquisitions, divestitures, foreign exchange, pricing, usage, customer concentration, and remaining performance obligations.
  4. Calculate growth. Compute year-over-year and sequential rates only for like periods; retain the company’s explanation beside each change.
  5. Label margins. Record GAAP gross profit and margin first. Add adjusted figures only after copying the reconciliation and listing exclusions.
  6. Bridge cash flow. Start with OCF, then mark each material working-capital movement as recurring, seasonal, or one-time. Reconcile customer collections where disclosed.
  7. Derive FCF carefully. Subtract only the investments specified by that issuer. Keep capital expenditure and capitalized software visible even if the company’s headline FCF excludes another item.
  8. Review liquidity and financing. Separate cash, securities, debt, maturities, equity issuance, credit facilities, covenants, and management’s stated capital needs.
  9. Write the conclusion. State what is improving, what is volatile, which assumptions drive cash needs, and what evidence would change your view at the next filing.

Common analytical mistakes and their fixes

“AI growth” treated as a quality score

A high growth rate can come from a small base, a one-time contract, an acquisition, or low-margin services. Fix it by showing the revenue mix, customer economics, and comparable periods.

GAAP and adjusted margins blended together

Excluding stock compensation or depreciation can make an adjusted margin look structurally higher. Fix it by presenting GAAP first and naming every adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One quarter presented as a burn rate

Working-capital timing can reverse in the next quarter. Fix it with a multi-quarter trend and an explanation of collections, payables, and deferred revenue.

Cash balance mistaken for cash generation

Equity or debt can replenish cash while operations consume it. Fix it by reading operating, investing, and financing sections together.

Issuer-defined FCF compared as though standardized

Different companies subtract different investments and one-time items. Fix it by reproducing each reconciliation and, when necessary, calculating a common supplemental measure from GAAP cash-flow lines.

Management optimism treated as an actual result

Guidance is forward-looking and depends on execution. Fix it by tagging every statement as historical, current guidance, or a scenario assumption, then checking later filings against it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use management commentary

Management remarks are useful for identifying drivers and risks, but they must be paired with reported numbers. In C3 AI’s fiscal 2026 earnings release, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas M. Siebel said, “The sales performance over recent quarters has been entirely unacceptable, to the point of surreal.” The statement is candid context about sales execution; it does not replace the revenue, margin, backlog, collection, and cash-flow disclosures surrounding it.

When reading any executive comment, extract three items: the claimed cause, the measurable indicator that should confirm it, and the time period in which confirmation should appear. For a claim about stronger demand, look for bookings, remaining performance obligations, pipeline conversion, or customer additions. For a claim about efficiency, look for gross margin, operating expenses, headcount, and OCF. If the indicator is not disclosed, mark the claim as unverified rather than filling the gap with a favorable assumption.

Build a decision-ready scorecard

A useful scorecard does not assign a universal “healthy” threshold. No representative industry-wide figure establishes a single acceptable AI growth rate, margin level, or burn rate. Instead, score direction, quality, and resilience against the company’s own history and clearly comparable peers.

Question Evidence to record Warning sign
Is growth durable? Like-for-like growth, recurring mix, retention or expansion indicators, contract obligations, and management’s quantified drivers Growth concentrated in services, one customer, one contract, or an acquisition with little disclosure
Is gross profit improving economically? GAAP margin trend, adjusted reconciliation, hosting and delivery costs, and mix Adjusted expansion while GAAP margin is flat or falling, or exclusions rise faster than revenue
Does revenue convert to cash? OCF trend, collections, receivables, deferred revenue, payables, and seasonality Receivables grow faster than sales or positive OCF relies on temporary working-capital benefits
What is the true investment burden? Capital expenditure, capitalized software, leases, and the issuer’s FCF formula Headline FCF omits recurring investment needed to deliver the product
Can the company fund its plan? Cash, securities, debt maturities, covenants, financing history, and scenario liquidity Short liquidity under a modest collection delay or dependence on uncommitted financing

Use the scorecard to decide what to investigate next, not to manufacture a precise valuation or investment recommendation. The strongest conclusion is specific: for example, growth may be recurring but cash conversion may depend on collections, or margins may be improving only after excluding costs that remain economically real.
