Estimate a gold explorer’s cash runway by comparing liquid resources with a clearly stated cash-use scenario, then test whether planned work and near-term obligations fit within that period. A cash balance alone does not establish how long the company can operate: exploration spending is uneven, working capital may include assets that are not cash, and future financing is uncertain.
Start with the latest filing, not a headline runway claim
Use the newest interim or annual financial statements and management discussion available on your analysis date. Record the balance-sheet date, reporting period, currency, and whether the statements are audited. Then check subsequent events and financing announcements so an older cash figure is not presented as current.

Work out what resources are actually available
Begin with cash and cash equivalents. Inspect restricted cash, short-term investments, receivables, accounts payable, and other current liabilities before treating a balance-sheet total as spendable money. Working capital is current assets minus current liabilities; it is not synonymous with cash, because some current assets may not be immediately realizable at their reported value.
#1 Best Overall
Athena Gold Corporation reported C$1,446,033 of cash and C$2,899,500 of working capital at June 30, 2026. Its working capital included investments in two publicly traded companies, so the larger figure should not be read as an equivalent cash balance. See the company’s 2026 interim MD&A.
Estimate cash use with more than one scenario
Use historical cash flows as a baseline
Read the cash-flow statement, especially operating and investing activities. Accounting presentation differs: exploration and evaluation costs may appear in either category. Separate one-off items from recurring overhead where the filing provides enough detail, and review financing cash flows separately so past fundraising does not obscure how much cash operations and exploration consumed.
A rough screening calculation is:
Indicative runway in months = available cash resources ÷ representative monthly net cash use

State the period behind the monthly-use figure. A recent average is only a scenario, not a forecast: field seasons, drilling campaigns, and changes in work plans can make an explorer’s spending lumpy.
Compare the baseline with management’s forward plan
Check the latest exploration program, expected expenditures, and timing. Use a separate forward-plan case rather than assuming historical spending will continue unchanged. Dakota Gold Corp.’s 2025 Form 10-K reported approximately $25.4 million of cash used in operations in 2025 and anticipated approximately $32.3 million of cash expenditures through March 25, 2027. The filing noted that timing depended on variable exploration spending; the forward figure is not a promise that cash use will occur evenly. The filing also reports financing inflows separately from operating use. See Dakota Gold’s 2025 Form 10-K.
Add commitments and other near-term obligations
Review planned program costs alongside obligations that may fall due before the estimated runway ends. Identify their amounts, due dates, and whether each is discretionary, contractual, or required by financing terms. Relevant items can include:
- Property payments, option or lease obligations, and accounts payable.
- Flow-through or other restricted-use expenditure commitments.
- Debt maturities and other contractual cash commitments.
- Planned exploration or development work that management expects to undertake.
Athena Gold disclosed approximately C$795,000 of unspent flow-through expenditure commitments due by December 31, 2026, in its 2026 interim MD&A. That obligation belongs in the near-term cash assessment; it should not be treated as interchangeable with optional future exploration spending.

Separate completed financing proceeds from announcements of intent, unused capacity, unexercised warrants, or a hoped-for strategic transaction. For each potential source, ask whether it is committed and available under defined conditions, how much net cash it could provide, and whether it would arrive before the estimated cash shortfall.
Assess access as well as timing. Market conditions, the share price, gold prices, and investor appetite may affect an explorer’s ability to issue shares, but a higher gold price does not guarantee favorable financing. Dakota Gold’s filing describes possible dilution from additional equity and notes that borrowing would add liabilities and future cash commitments (2025 Form 10-K). Equity may reduce existing holders’ ownership; debt creates repayment or other future cash obligations.

Read what the company says it would do if funding falls short
Review liquidity, going-concern, and risk-factor disclosures for the stated consequences of not obtaining adequate capital. Possible responses include reducing or deferring exploration, seeking debt or equity, pursuing a strategic arrangement, relinquishing property interests, or ceasing operations. Do not infer that every option is available: use the actions the issuer actually discusses.
Austin Gold’s annual filing describes the possibility of delaying, reducing, or eliminating exploration programs, or relinquishing rights, if timely adequate financing is unavailable (annual filing). Athena Gold stated that current resources were expected to cover at least the next 12 months, while warning that financing beyond that horizon might not be available on acceptable terms or at all; it also said planned exploration and development might need to be reduced or deferred if additional financing were unavailable (2026 interim MD&A). Such statements are management outlooks based on assumptions, not assured financing.
Compare companies on consistent terms
When comparing two or more explorers, align reporting dates and currencies or clearly normalize them. A useful comparison keeps liquidity, spending, obligations, and financing certainty distinct:
| Comparison area | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Liquidity | Cash and cash equivalents versus working capital; identify material investments or other current assets that may not be immediately spendable. |
| Cash use | Operating and investing cash use, the period covered, and changes in exploration activity. |
| Forward spending | Planned exploration budget, expected timing, and contracted or restricted-use commitments. |
| Runway scenarios | Indicative months using a stated recent-use assumption and a separate disclosed forward-plan assumption. |
| Funding need | Amount and timing of external capital required; distinguish completed proceeds from potential financing capacity. |
| Financing consequences | Likely equity dilution or debt liabilities and future cash commitments, as described by the issuer. |
| Fallback actions | Going-concern language and stated operational responses if capital is unavailable. |
Do not assign a universal “safe runway” threshold: the filings cited here do not establish an industry-wide standard, and the two company examples are not a sector average.
Write a dated conclusion with assumptions visible
A useful assessment reports the latest filing date and resources, the cash-use or budget assumptions, material commitments and their timing, the amount and certainty of any financing needed, and the stated operational response if funding fails. Give a range where different reasonable spending scenarios produce different outcomes, explain what could invalidate the estimate, and date the conclusion. Recheck subsequent filings and events before repeating any balance or runway estimate.
