What “Ask Gemini in Chrome” does for product research
Gemini in Chrome lets you ask questions about the webpage you are viewing instead of copying product details into a separate chat. Google’s shopping guidance describes the basic use plainly: “In Gemini in Chrome, ask about a product you’re shopping for.” You can ask about one item, request a comparison, or focus Gemini on a selected part of a page.

On supported shopping results, product cards may include descriptions, reviews, buying options, comparisons, and direct product links. The information shown depends on the products and merchants Gemini can identify. A card is not evidence that every available seller or model has been included, and seeing a buying option does not mean that in-chat checkout is available for that listing.

The most useful results come from a question that names the decision you are making. Instead of asking “Is this good?”, identify the product and the criteria that matter: dimensions, weight, material, battery life, compatibility, warranty, price, or intended use. Gemini can then organize visible information around your goal and point out details you should verify.
Check eligibility before you start
Google’s documented shopping feature has account and location requirements. The exact country list and rollout can change, so check Google’s current Gemini shopping help for your region rather than assuming the feature is available everywhere.

These conditions describe separate capabilities. For example, being able to ask a general question in Gemini does not prove that screen selection or shopping checkout is enabled on the same account and device.

Ask about one product in Chrome
Use this procedure when the page mainly concerns one product.
- Open the page in Chrome. Navigate to the product page, a retailer listing, or an article that contains the product details you want to examine.
- Open Ask Gemini in Chrome. Select the Ask Gemini control in Chrome. If it is missing, your account, device, country, browser version, or feature rollout may not qualify.
- State the decision you need to make. Identify the product and the comparison axes or use case. For example, ask whether the listed dimensions fit a particular space, or whether the warranty and battery specification meet your needs.
- Ask for evidence from the page. Tell Gemini to separate information it can see from issues that require checking elsewhere. This reduces the chance that a polished summary will be mistaken for a verified specification.
- Inspect the response and cards. Open any product card for descriptions, reviews, buying options, or links. Follow the retailer or manufacturer link for the final specification and purchasing decision.
Prompt examples for a single product
Summarize this laptop’s processor, memory, storage, screen size, weight, price, and warranty. Mark any detail you cannot verify from this page.Does this carry-on suitcase meet a 22 × 14 × 9 inch airline size limit? Google’s own examples illustrate the same pattern: “Find me a new laptop for college under $800.” A useful prompt includes a product category, a practical goal, and a constraint such as budget or size.

Compare several products with Select from screen
When a page contains multiple cards, a comparison table, or specifications that are difficult to describe, attach only the relevant part of the page. Google’s documented flow is:
- Open Ask Gemini in Chrome.
- Choose Add menu.
- Select Select from screen.
- Draw a box around the products, rows, or specifications you want Gemini to examine.
- Resize or reposition the selection if it misses a value or includes unrelated content.
- Type a concrete question and send it.
For example, select several pairs of running shoes and ask which appears best for your running style. You can also select two visible product cards and ask Gemini to list differences in price, materials, dimensions, warranty, and the feature that matters most for your use. A selection gives Gemini a defined visual target; it does not guarantee that hidden tabs, collapsed specifications, images, or information below the selected area will be considered.
Comparison prompts that produce usable output
Compare the two selected headphones for battery life, dimensions, warranty, and price. Make a table and mark values that are not shown.I selected three laptops. Which is the best fit for college note-taking and light programming under $800? Explain the trade-offs rather than choosing only by price.Compare these carry-on suitcases by weight, material, wheel design, listed dimensions, and price. Tell me which specifications I should verify on each seller page.Which features differ between the selected models, and which differences are likely to matter for daily use?
Google specifically illustrates comparison by weight, material, and price. Add other criteria only when they are relevant to your category and visible or otherwise answerable from the pages.
How to frame a question Gemini can answer
A reliable product question has four parts: the items, the task, the criteria, and the desired format. You do not need special syntax; natural language is sufficient.

Follow-up questions can narrow an answer without starting over. Ask Gemini to explain one difference, identify a missing specification, or list what to verify. If the response blends facts from the page with general product knowledge, ask it to label each statement as page-based, inferred, or needing confirmation.

Read product cards and buying options carefully
Product cards are a convenient starting point, not a complete catalog. Google says cards can expose descriptions, reviews, buying options, comparisons, and other details. The available information can vary by merchant and product category, and a card may link you to a seller rather than complete the transaction in Chrome.

- The exact model, size, color, storage capacity, or configuration being discussed.
- Whether the price applies to the selected variant and whether it is a one-time or recurring charge.
- Shipping, taxes, return rules, stock status, and delivery dates on the seller’s page.
- Warranty length, regional coverage, and exclusions in the manufacturer or retailer terms.
- Whether reviews refer to the same model and not a merged listing containing several variants.
Google’s shopping help describes Buy buttons and Google Pay checkout for eligible Gemini web-app product listings. That is a narrower path than simply seeing a product card, and it does not mean every Chrome card supports in-chat purchase. Treat checkout availability as listing-specific.
Verify consequential details before buying
Use Gemini to organize research, then verify details that could make the purchase unsuitable or costly. Open the linked retailer or manufacturer page and compare the final configuration with the answer you received.
- Match the model identifier. Confirm the complete model number, generation, size, and included accessories.
- Recheck measurements and compatibility. For furniture, luggage, chargers, parts, and devices, compare the seller’s technical specification with your required dimensions, connectors, standards, or operating system.
- Confirm current price and availability. Prices, discounts, stock, and delivery estimates can change after Gemini has summarized a page.
- Read policy details. Check warranty, returns, refurbishing or open-box status, regional restrictions, and subscription conditions.
- Resolve conflicts. If Gemini’s answer and the seller’s page disagree, use the current seller or manufacturer specification as the decision reference and investigate before ordering.
This verification step is editorial safety advice: Google’s documentation describes what cards and comparisons can show, but it does not promise that every generated answer is error-free or complete.

Feature names can look similar while their requirements differ. The screen-selection help is written for desktop access in a supported country and names Chromebook Plus, Mac, and Windows computers. Shopping eligibility separately depends on age, account type, Keep Activity, country, merchants, and product restrictions. Do not infer that one available control guarantees all other shopping functions.

At the time of the reviewed Android guidance, Gemini in Chrome was not available in the Chrome app on Android phones or tablets. Android users are directed to the Gemini mobile assistant for questions about an open webpage. This is a platform distinction, not a statement that Gemini itself is unavailable on Android.
Availability can also change through gradual rollout. If a colleague sees a control that you do not, check the signed-in account, browser updates, country support, and whether the feature has reached your account before assuming the page is malfunctioning.

Ask Gemini is not visible
- Confirm that you are using Chrome on a supported desktop device for the capability you want.
- Check that you are signed in to the intended personal Google Account.
- Review age, country, and Keep Activity requirements for shopping features.
- Update Chrome and reload the page; rollout timing can differ between accounts.
- If you are on Android Chrome, use the Gemini mobile assistant instead of expecting the desktop Chrome control.
The comparison includes the wrong products
- Use Select from screen and draw a tighter box around the intended cards or table rows.
- Resize or reposition the selection before sending it.
- Name the models in the prompt and ask Gemini to repeat the identifiers it used.
- Exclude advertisements, recommendations, and unrelated rows from the selected area.
The answer sounds confident but misses a specification
- Ask which statements came directly from the page.
- Request a list of missing or ambiguous values.
- Open the original specification or seller page and verify the disputed detail.
- Ask a narrower follow-up instead of repeating a broad “Is this good?” question.
Do not confuse product questions with Auto browse
Auto browse is a separate, agentic capability. Google describes it as a multi-step feature that can find and compare products and add them to a cart. It is not required for asking Gemini about the product page already open in Chrome.
The current Auto browse guidance lists narrower conditions: you must be 18 or older, in the United States, eligible for opt-in, using the latest Chrome with English as the device language, signed in to a personal account with Google AI Ultra or Pro, and included in the gradual rollout. Those requirements should not be applied to ordinary product questions, and ordinary product questions should not be presented as if they automatically authorize cart actions.
A practical workflow for a careful purchase decision
- Define the decision. Write down your budget, intended use, must-have features, size or compatibility limits, and acceptable trade-offs.
- Open the relevant page in Chrome. Use Ask Gemini for a single product or Select from screen for a focused group.
- Ask for structured evidence. Request a table with your criteria and a separate list of missing values.
- Challenge the first answer. Ask what could change the recommendation, which assumptions were made, and what needs verification.
- Inspect cards and links. Check the exact model and seller rather than relying on a generic product name.
- Verify at the source. Confirm current specifications, price, availability, warranty, returns, and shipping on the retailer or manufacturer page.
- Choose or keep researching. If a critical value remains unclear, do not treat the generated comparison as a substitute for that missing information.
