How to Arrange Displays and Set the Main Monitor in Windows and macOS

To make your monitor layout match your desk, arrange the numbered display tiles in your operating system to match each screen’s physical position, then apply the change and test pointer movement. Choose Extend when you want separate workspaces across screens, or Duplicate when you want the same image on each. Arranging display tiles changes screen positions and roles; it does not tile application windows.

How do I rearrange my monitors in Windows?

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display. Connect the monitors first and check that the computer or dock cables are seated. Microsoft’s instruction is: “In Display settings, select and drag the display to where you want.”

  1. Select Identify to show a number on each detected screen. Match each number to the physical monitor it represents; the number does not indicate which display should be primary.
  2. In the display diagram, drag each numbered tile so the layout matches the monitors’ left-right positions and relative heights on your desk.
  3. Select Apply, then move the pointer across the edges to check that it crosses to the expected screen.

If a connected display is missing, go to Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect. These arrangement and detection steps are documented by Microsoft Support for Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Windows 10 is now legacy guidance

The same route applies to Windows 10, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but Microsoft says they no longer receive free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes; it recommends moving to Windows 11. For a supported Windows version, follow the Windows 11 route.

How do I extend my display instead of mirroring it?

Windows: choose a display mode

Press Windows+P to open the projection choices. Select Extend for a desktop that spans the screens, allowing you to move items between them. Select Duplicate to show the same content on each screen. PC screen only and Second screen only limit the image to one display.

Mac: choose how a display is used

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select a display, and use the Use as pop-up menu to choose extended desktop, mirroring, or main display. Apple’s available choices depend on the Mac and connected displays; details are in its guides to Displays settings on Mac and extending or mirroring your Mac desktop.

How do I set my main monitor?

On a Mac

In Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the display you want, then choose Use as > Main display if that option is available. Apple says that on Mac laptops and iMacs, these Use as options require an external display; on Mac mini and Mac Studio, more than one display must be connected. The Arrange control positions displays, handles mirroring, and relocates the menu bar; it appears when an external display is connected.

On Windows

Microsoft’s official multiple-monitor guide documents identifying and arranging displays and selecting display modes, but it does not confirm the current control for designating a main display. Community guidance describes a Make this my main display checkbox under Multiple displays, but its exact label and availability should be verified in your Windows build rather than treated as confirmed by Microsoft’s guide.

How do I make my second monitor my main display?

First identify which number belongs to the physical monitor you want to use. On a Mac, select that display in System Settings > Displays and choose Use as > Main display when available. On Windows, arrange the screens in Settings > System > Display; the current main-display control is not confirmed in the Microsoft guide cited above, so check the controls shown by your Windows build rather than relying on an unverified label.

What if the display arrangement or options do not appear?

  • A Windows display is missing: Check the cable connections, then use Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect.
  • The pointer moves to the wrong screen: Revisit the display diagram and adjust the tiles’ left-right and height relationships to match the desk, apply the change, and test the edges again.
  • A Mac option is unavailable: Apple notes that settings vary by Mac model and display. Some Arrange and Use as options require an external display, and Mac mini or Mac Studio needs more than one connected display for the cited Use as choices.
  • A Mac cable does not fit its port: Apple says you can use a video adapter or replace the cable with one that fits. The supported display count depends on the Mac model and each display’s resolution and refresh rate, so check the specifications for your exact Mac before choosing a connection. See Apple’s guide to connecting displays to your Mac.

Mirror only selected screens on a Mac

For more than two displays where some should mirror and others remain extended, Apple’s procedure is to begin with displays extended, then hold Option and drag one display icon onto another to mirror that pair.
