Request and download your X archive while your account is still active and accessible. X may take a few days to prepare it, and you need to be logged in to download the ZIP. Once you have saved and checked the archive, you can deactivate your account; avoid logging in during the following 30 days if you want deletion to proceed.
Request your X archive before deactivation
Use the account settings for the X account you plan to delete. X’s labels can differ between desktop, iOS and Android, so follow the account or data options shown in your logged-in settings rather than relying on a single platform’s menu wording.

- Confirm the email address on your account. X recommends confirming it before requesting the archive so you can receive the ready notification and download link.
- Open account settings and find the account/data area. Choose the option to download or request an archive of your data.
- Verify your identity. Follow the prompt to confirm using the email address or phone number associated with the account.
- Submit the archive request and wait for notification. X says, “It may take a few days for us to prepare the download of your X archive.” X does not give a fixed maximum preparation time in its instructions. It will notify you by email and may also send an app notification.
- Download the archive while logged in. When X says it is ready, open the download from account settings or use the link in the email. Use the same browser in which you are logged in to X. On desktop, the download is a ZIP file.

X describes the archive as a machine-readable snapshot in HTML and JSON. Depending on the account and the information available, it can include profile information, posts, Direct Messages, Moments, follower and following lists, address book data, Lists, inferred interests and demographic information, and information about ads seen or engaged with. Media may include images, videos and GIFs attached to posts, Direct Messages or Moments. X describes these as information it considers most relevant and useful; it does not guarantee that every category or individual item will appear in every archive.

- Keep the original ZIP as a preserved copy before extracting or rearranging its contents.
- Open the included “Your archive” file in a desktop browser to inspect the archive and its contents.
- Check for the posts and media you specifically want to keep before moving on to deactivation.
You can keep the ZIP on your computer or make an additional copy on storage you control, such as an external drive. X does not require a particular storage method or specify an archive size or recommended drive capacity.
Deactivate only after securing the download
X describes deactivation as the first step toward permanent deletion. After you deactivate, you have up to 30 days to restore the account by logging in. If you do not log in during that period, X says the account is permanently deactivated or deleted and is no longer available through its production tools.

For X’s current instructions, see how to deactivate your account. Because logging in during the 30-day window can restore the account, do not log in if your intention is to let deletion proceed.
