To save a visual snapshot of an Indian government web page with Browserless, send a POST request to its REST /screenshot endpoint with the page URL and screenshot options, then save and inspect the returned image. Use fullPage: true for the full document rather than just the visible screen. Keep the exact URL, capture time, and settings alongside the image: a screenshot is a visual record, not a complete web archive or proof of authenticity.
What a screenshot preserves—and what it does not
A screenshot records how a page appeared in a particular rendered view. It does not preserve the page’s underlying files, links, interactive behavior, or future availability. It also does not, by itself, establish that the image is authentic or legally admissible.

For a government page, first record its exact URL and identify the organization responsible for the content. The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and Apps (GIGW) identifies gov.in and nic.in domains as indicators of official status and says ownership information is among the minimum content expected on subsequent pages. How to take a screenshot with the Browserless REST API
Browserless documents a POST request to its /screenshot endpoint. Include your Browserless API token and a JSON request body containing the URL and screenshot options. The response is an image; documented formats include PNG, JPEG, and WebP, depending on the API and options you use. Check the Browserless screenshot API documentation for the current endpoint URL, authentication format, and request schema.

Because the endpoint URL and authentication details depend on Browserless’s current API configuration, use the exact URL and token format shown in your Browserless account and documentation. A generic request-body shape is:

Save the response bytes to a file with an extension matching the requested image format. The snippet above illustrates the body shape; it is not a complete executable request because the endpoint and token are account-specific.
Choose the capture area and viewport

Viewport width can change responsive layouts and therefore what appears in the image. Set deliberate viewport dimensions when the intended screen size matters, and record those dimensions with the file. Do not treat one chosen width as a universal standard.

Wait for page content before capture
Government pages may load text, images, or other elements after the initial navigation. Browserless recommends waiting for relevant elements to load. Its Browserless as a Service (BaaS) documentation also describes waitForImages for image-heavy pages. For lazy-loaded content, the REST screenshot documentation notes that scrolling may be needed to trigger loading before capture. Consult the BaaS screenshot documentation and the REST screenshot documentation for the options available to your chosen endpoint.
Use the narrowest wait that matches the page: wait for a meaningful selector if the target content has one, allow images to load when they matter, and scroll when the page loads content lazily. Then inspect the image rather than assuming a completed request means the intended content was captured.
Keep context with the image
Save a small sidecar text or JSON record with each capture. This is practical traceability advice, not a formal evidence standard prescribed by the cited documentation.

- The exact page URL, including its path and query string if present.
- Capture date and time in UTC.
- Viewport width and height, and whether
fullPagewas enabled. - Output format and any wait or scrolling settings used.
- Any visible error, access-denied notice, incomplete content, or other anomaly.
Keep the original image unchanged if you need to retain what the capture returned. If you make a cropped or annotated copy for easier reading, identify it as an edited derivative rather than the original capture.

Inspect the result and troubleshoot failures
Browserless identifies blank or white images, CAPTCHA pages, access-denied or 403 pages, and missing elements as signs that automation may be blocked or the page may not have been captured as intended. Do not label such an output as a successful capture of the target content.

Indian government archival policy is separate from screenshot capture
GIGW guidance says departments should manage outdated announcements, tenders, recruitment notices, news, and press releases under an archival policy, including expiry dates and a mechanism to remove or archive time-sensitive content. Its archival-policy template says departments must specify how long old documents remain online, when they move to offline archives, and whether or when they may be permanently deleted. The template uses placeholders for retention periods; it does not establish one universal duration for every department.

The same template calls for an authorization process and an audit trail for content governance. That is not a rule for authenticating screenshots. For an official records program, consult the responsible department’s policy and obtain qualified records or legal guidance where formal retention or evidentiary assurance is required. The reviewed guidance does not establish that a screenshot alone satisfies a department’s records policy or proves legal admissibility in India.
