1. Record the page you want to study
Start with the competitor’s exact landing-page URL, including any campaign or variant parameters that may affect what appears. Record the date and time you accessed it. Keeping these details is a recordkeeping practice, not a feature of the archive, but it helps distinguish the page you examined from a later version or a different campaign variant.

For comparisons, note the visible headline, offer, calls to action, and major layout elements. Treat these as observations about the page, not evidence of its rankings or search performance.

- Open Internet Archive’s Save Page Now, enter the exact URL, and submit it. You can also use the Wayback Machine browser extension to invoke a save.
- When the save completes, retain the resulting archived-page URL beside the original live URL and capture date.
- Open the saved URL and check whether the page rendered as expected.
The Internet Archive says Save Page Now captures the submitted page, including images and CSS when available. It does not save outlinks or start a crawl of the whole site. A site’s crawling restrictions or technical and SSL issues can also prevent a successful capture.

3. Take a separate screenshot
Use your browser’s screenshot function or another capture method to make a local visual record of the page as you viewed it. The screenshot is separate from the Wayback capture: it records a view at a particular moment, while the archive URL gives you a retrievable saved page. Record the screenshot’s date and whether it shows desktop or mobile, along with the viewport dimensions if available.
The sources cited here do not prescribe a specific screenshot application, file format, or viewport. For a competitor comparison, consistency matters more than choosing a particular size: use the same viewport for each page and record it so readers of your notes can interpret the comparison.

4. Verify and organize both records
Open the archived URL and inspect the page for missing images, styles, or other resources. The Internet Archive notes that images may be broken when the assets are not available on its servers. An archived rendering is the version available from that saved capture; do not assume it reproduces every personalized, interactive, or dynamic state.

- The exact live URL and any meaningful query parameters.
- The access date and time.
- The Wayback capture URL and the date of that capture.
- The local screenshot, with viewport or device context.
- A brief note on the visible offer, headline, calls to action, and anything that did not load.
5. Interpret screenshots and archive captures carefully
A screenshot and an archive capture are complementary, not complete proof of every visitor’s experience. Neither guarantees that dynamic content, personalization, interactions, or unavailable assets were preserved. Use them to document page content and presentation; appearance alone does not establish search rankings, traffic, or SEO performance.
Google’s guidance for its own crawler is relevant when evaluating how Google may render a live page, not as a rule for Internet Archive access. Google recommends that important resources be accessible and points site owners to URL Inspection for checking how Google renders a page. It also explains that robots.txt controls crawling and is not a reliable way to keep a URL out of search results. Do not infer from Googlebot rules whether the Internet Archive can save a page.

Google Search Essentials groups its guidance into technical requirements, spam policies, and key best practices, and says meeting requirements does not guarantee a page will be crawled, indexed, or served. These points provide SEO context; they do not turn a screenshot into evidence of ranking outcomes.
6. Rights and attribution are a separate question
Google’s screenshot guidance says users do not need to ask permission to use screenshots of Google Search pages and results in print for educational or instructional purposes, subject to Google’s trademark rules and screenshot guidelines. It also says the Search interface should be shown naturally and not altered. That guidance is specific to Google Search screenshots; it does not establish a general rule for reusing screenshots of competitor landing pages or for every online use. Consider the relevant rights and permissions for your intended use rather than treating Google’s guidance as a blanket license.
