How to archive Android apps to free up storage without losing their data

Android app archiving removes an app’s installed software while keeping its icon and app data on the device. That makes it useful when storage is tight but you may need the app again. On supported devices, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Archive. The app icon becomes dimmed; tap it later to reinstall the software and resume using the retained data.

What Android app archiving does

Archiving is a middle option between leaving an app fully installed and removing it completely. Google Android Help describes the result this way: “When an app is archived, your device removes its software, permissions, temporary files, and stops notifications, but retains the app icon and data.” The operating system therefore frees space used by the app package and its temporary files without treating the app as a fresh installation.

The icon remains in the launcher or app list, but it is dimmed and marked with an archive indicator. That visual cue distinguishes an archived app from one that is still ready to open. Selecting the icon starts restoration rather than launching the app immediately.

After archiving What happens
Installed app software Removed from the device until you restore the app.
Permissions Removed while the app is archived; permissions can be requested again after restoration.
Temporary files Removed.
App icon Kept in place, dimmed and marked with an archive symbol.
App data Retained on the device according to Google’s archive feature description.
Notifications Stopped while the app is archived.

“Retains the app’s data” is not a promise that every service-related item survives forever. An app’s account, cloud content, subscriptions, or server-side records are controlled by the app developer and its service. Archiving also does not guarantee that an app will remain downloadable in the future. Treat the feature as preservation of the local app data that Android keeps, not as a backup of the entire account or a guarantee of continued access to an online service.

Check whether your phone supports archiving

Availability depends on the Android version, device hardware and software configuration. Google notes that some archive controls require Android 15 or later and that certain steps require supported hardware. The exact menus can also differ between manufacturers and Android releases.

  • Install any pending Android system updates, then check the app’s page in Settings again.
  • Confirm that the phone includes the Google Play Store if you expect to restore the app through the store.
  • Remember the name of the app’s store listing. Restoration requires that the app is still available to download there.
  • Do not assume that every app, phone model or regional configuration exposes the Archive control.

If the option is absent after an update, consult the phone manufacturer’s documentation for that model. A missing control does not mean that clearing storage or uninstalling is an equivalent substitute; those actions have different effects on data.

Manually archive one app

Manual archiving is the most predictable approach when you know which app you want to remove temporarily. Use this documented route on a supported device:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps. On some phones this may be labelled Apps & notifications or App management.
  3. Select the app you want to archive.
  4. Tap Archive, if that control is available.
  5. Confirm the action if Android displays a confirmation prompt.

Return to the launcher or app list and check for the app’s dimmed icon and archive indicator. Because the software has been removed, opening the icon now begins a reinstall instead of opening the app. If you cannot find Archive in the app’s information screen, verify the Android version and hardware support rather than selecting Clear storage by mistake.

How to choose apps for manual archiving

Start with large apps that you have not used recently but may need again. Review the app’s storage details before archiving so you understand which installed software is being removed. Avoid archiving an app during an active task, download or update; notifications stop immediately and the app cannot perform work while it is archived.

Turn on automatic archiving in Google Play

Google Play can automatically archive apps that you do not use regularly. This is an opt-in store feature, so enabling it allows Play to decide when an eligible, infrequently used app should be archived rather than requiring you to select every app yourself.

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile photo.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Open General.
  5. Turn on Automatically archive apps.

Play Store labels and placement can change with app updates. If you do not see the setting, update the Play Store and look under its General settings; the feature may also be unavailable on that device configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a particular app from automatic archiving

Automatic archiving is not all-or-nothing for individual apps. To exclude an app, open Settings > Apps > [app] and turn off Manage app if unused. The wording may vary slightly, but the control is on the app’s information page. Turning it off tells Android not to manage that app through the unused-app behavior.

Method Who chooses the app When it happens Best use
Manual archive You select a specific app in Settings. Immediately after confirmation. Freeing space from a known, rarely used app while keeping control of the timing.
Automatic archive Google Play identifies apps that are not used regularly after you opt in. When Play applies its unused-app management. Reducing maintenance when you are comfortable with Play managing eligible apps.

Restore an archived app

Restoration downloads the app software again and makes the retained data available to it. The simplest route is the dimmed icon:

  1. Find the archived app’s dimmed icon in the launcher or app list.
  2. Tap the icon.
  3. Choose the option to reinstall or restore when Android displays it.
  4. Wait for the download and installation to finish, then open the app.

You can also open the app’s App info page in Settings and use its restore or reinstall control, or open the app’s details page in the Google Play Store and install it from there. The exact button text can differ by Android and Play Store version.

Conditions that can prevent restoration

  • The app store is missing: Google’s documented restore paths depend on an installed app store. If it has been disabled or removed, re-enable it where the device permits.
  • The listing is no longer available: Restoration requires that the app can still be downloaded from the store. An archived icon cannot recreate software that the store no longer offers.
  • Not enough free space: Android may ask you to manage storage before it can reinstall the package. Remove or archive other apps, clear temporary cache data, or move personal files as appropriate, then retry.
  • Network or store errors: Check the device’s connection and the Play Store before attempting the restore again. Menu names and error messages depend on the device and store version.

After restoration, check the app’s permissions. Archiving removes permissions, so Android may ask you to grant access again before features such as notifications, location or media access work. The app’s own sign-in process may also appear; archiving does not guarantee that an online account remains signed in.

Archive, clear cache, clear storage and uninstall are different

These commands appear near one another in Android settings, but they are not interchangeable. Choose based on whether your priority is preserving app data, removing temporary files or deleting the app’s local state.

Action What it removes What happens to app data When to use it
Archive App software, permissions and temporary files. Retained; the icon remains dimmed for restoration. You want to free app space and may use the app later.
Clear cache Temporary cached files. App data remains; the app stays installed. You are troubleshooting temporary files or need a small amount of space without removing the app.
Clear storage (also called clear data) The app’s stored local data. Permanently deleted according to Google’s storage guidance. Only when you deliberately want to reset the app and accept loss of its local data.
Uninstall The installed app package and its presence from the device. This research does not establish a guarantee that every app’s local state survives uninstalling. When you no longer need the app and have considered its data and account implications.

For the specific goal of freeing storage without losing retained app data, archiving is the relevant option. Clearing cache may help with temporary files but does not remove the installed software. Clearing storage is the opposite of the requested outcome because it permanently deletes the app’s local data.

What changes while an app is archived

Notifications and background activity

Notifications stop while the app is archived because its software is no longer installed. The app cannot carry out normal background work until it is restored. If you rely on an app for time-sensitive alerts, do not archive it; use manual archiving only for apps whose interruption is acceptable.

Permissions

Archiving removes the app’s permissions. After restoration, Android can request them again, and the app may not work fully until you respond. Review the permission prompts rather than automatically granting every request.

Local data versus online content

Android’s feature is designed to retain the app data associated with the archived installation. However, the official description does not provide an app-by-app guarantee for every third-party login token, downloaded item, conversation, game account or cloud document. Content maintained on the developer’s servers follows that service’s own retention and sign-in rules.

Storage planning before you archive

Archiving itself removes software and temporary files, but the amount recovered varies by app and device. Google’s official guidance does not provide a universal storage-savings figure, so use the storage amount shown on your phone rather than relying on an estimate.

  1. Open Settings > Storage to identify what is consuming space.
  2. Open an app’s information page and review its storage breakdown before choosing Archive.
  3. Prioritize apps you rarely open and that occupy substantial installed-software space.
  4. Leave frequently used communication, security and time-sensitive apps installed so their notifications and background functions continue.
  5. After archiving, revisit the Storage screen to confirm that the device reports the expected change.

If the storage screen does not change immediately, allow the device to finish its cleanup and refresh the view. Do not clear storage merely to force a larger number; that command deletes local app data.

Troubleshoot common problems

Archive is not listed

Check that the phone meets the Android version and hardware requirements. Some archive steps require Android 15 or later, and support is not universal. Install system updates, confirm that you selected an individual app rather than a system settings page, and consult the manufacturer if the control remains absent.

The icon disappeared instead of becoming dimmed

A dimmed icon with an archive symbol is the expected archive result. If the icon is gone, check whether the app was uninstalled or disabled instead, and review the app list in Settings. Do not assume that an uninstall preserved the same data.

Tapping the icon does nothing

Open the app’s App info page and try the restore control there. You can also search for the app in the Play Store. Restoration depends on an installed app store and a listing that is still available for download.

Android says there is not enough space to restore

Follow the prompt to manage storage. Archive another eligible app, clear cache data from suitable apps, or remove files you no longer need. Clearing storage is not a safe space-saving shortcut when you need to preserve that app’s data.

The restored app asks for permissions or a sign-in

This is expected because archiving removes permissions and does not guarantee preservation of every online session. Grant only the permissions you need and sign in using the service’s normal recovery process if required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic archiving removed an app I still need

Restore it from its dimmed icon, App info page or Play Store listing. Then open Settings > Apps > [app] and turn off Manage app if unused for that app. This prevents the individual app from being managed as unused where the control is supported.

A safe archive-and-restore routine

  1. Confirm your phone’s Android version and whether the Archive control is present.
  2. Review the app’s storage page and decide whether losing notifications temporarily is acceptable.
  3. Archive the app through its App info page, then verify its dimmed icon.
  4. Keep the app’s store listing in mind if it is important; future restoration requires continued availability.
  5. When needed, tap the dimmed icon or use App info or the Play Store to restore it.
  6. After installation, review permissions, sign-in status and notifications before relying on the app.

This routine preserves the distinction that matters: archiving removes the installed software while retaining the app data Android keeps, whereas clearing storage deletes that data and uninstalling has no universal local-state guarantee.
