One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo archive a website for long-term access, first define exactly what you need to preserve, then capture it in a portable format such as WARC, retain the capture details, keep multiple copies, and test the archive in a replay tool. A screenshot can document how a page looked, but it is not a substitute for an archive of the page’s files, links, and responses.
Choose what “the website” means
A website archive preserves what a capture process could access within a defined scope at a particular time. It is not automatically a complete copy of the origin server, its database, or every interaction a visitor could ever perform. Decide what the archive is for before choosing a tool.
- One page: preserve a specific article, announcement, or reference page.
- A set of pages: capture selected URLs and the assets needed to inspect them.
- An interactive experience: record pages while navigating, opening menus, or triggering content.
- A site or collection: define a domain or subdomain and use a crawler or managed archiving workflow with an explicit crawl scope.
Write down the seed URLs—the starting pages from which a crawl or session proceeds—and the reason each is included. The Library of Congress notes that a seed may be a page, document, subdomain, or domain, depending on the intended scope (Library of Congress Web Archiving FAQ). Save the URL list alongside the archive so a future reader can understand what was and was not meant to be captured.
Select a capture method and format
For preservation, prefer portable, non-proprietary archive output over a screenshot or a service-only link. The Library of Congress prefers WARC for web archives and lists WACZ as an acceptable option used by the Webrecorder project (Recommended Formats Statement: Web Archives). WARC stores captured web resources and associated technical information in a structured archive format; it is intended for recording and later retrieval of web content (WARC, Web ARChive file format).

| Need | Approach | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve one public URL for reference | Use a public web archive page-save feature, after checking its current service documentation. | Whether it includes linked assets, offers public access, and lets you retain an exportable copy. Current operating details are not established by the cited materials. |
| Capture pages that require interaction | Use a browser-based session capture such as Webrecorder’s ArchiveWeb.page. | Confirm capture is active, wait for pending URLs and resources, export WARC or WACZ, and replay the result. Its documentation does not promise complete capture of every site (ArchiveWeb.page; Capture Session user guide). |
| Preserve a larger site or collection | Use a crawler or institutional archiving workflow with documented seeds and scope. | Check crawl depth, JavaScript support, access limitations, metadata, output format, storage, and replay capability. Scope and capture limitations matter even with a crawler. |
| Keep your own copy | Retain exported WARC or WACZ files in managed storage, with separate copies. | Consider capacity, integrity checks, recovery, and a separate physical or geographic location. A single external drive is only one copy, not a full preservation plan. |
Capture the content while it is available
Websites and their URLs can change or disappear. The Library of Congress describes websites as ephemeral and often at-risk born-digital content (Web Archiving Program Overview). If a redesign, shutdown, or content removal is expected, begin capture before the deadline rather than relying on a last-minute export.
For a browser-based capture
- Install or open a browser capture tool such as ArchiveWeb.page, then start a new capture session.
- Enter the seed URL and confirm the tool indicates that capture is active before browsing.
- Navigate through the pages and interactions you intend to preserve. Open relevant menus or tabs and trigger content that only appears after an action.
- Watch the capture status. The ArchiveWeb.page guide shows capture activity and pending URLs; wait for pending resources to finish before navigating away.
- Export the session as WARC or WACZ using the tool’s export controls, then record the export date and scope in a separate note.
- Open the export in a compatible replay tool and inspect representative pages, assets, and interactions.
Browser recording is useful for interactive pages because it captures what you visit, but it does not by itself demonstrate that a whole domain has been captured. A browsing session can omit pages you never opened, resources that failed to load, or content unavailable to the browser.
For a larger site
Build an inventory before running a crawl: list important page families, subdomains, linked files, and any pages that require a login or user action. Set boundaries explicitly so a crawler does not roam into unrelated sites or miss sections beyond its limits. The Library of Congress describes seed URLs and institutional practices for collecting web material; its guidance does not imply that a crawl can retrieve every resource on a site.
If you control the site, make it easier to preserve
Site owners can reduce some common capture obstacles. The Library of Congress recommends standards-based, accessible pages, stable URIs, meaningful navigation, comprehensive sitemaps, and open formats, while cautioning that these practices do not guarantee flawless capture (Creating Preservable Websites).

- Keep important content reachable through ordinary links rather than relying solely on hidden or obfuscated JavaScript behavior.
- Maintain a comprehensive sitemap and stable URLs for pages and files.
- Use accessible web standards and formats that are not tied to one proprietary viewer.
- Test a representative archive capture, including pages with images, downloads, and dynamic content, and document known omissions.
Preserve the archive and its context
An archive file is more useful when a future reader knows what it represents. Store a plain-text or otherwise readable record with each capture that includes:
- Capture date and time, including the time zone if known.
- Source URL or complete seed URL list.
- Scope: page, selected paths, subdomain, domain, or interactive session.
- Capture tool and version, when available.
- Known gaps, such as pages not visited, blocked resources, or interactions not captured.
- Archive format and any replay instructions needed to inspect it.
Keep multiple copies under managed storage. The Library of Congress describes managing multiple copies as part of institutional web preservation practice (Library of Congress Web Archiving FAQ). For personal archives, an external hard drive can be one local copy of WARC or WACZ files, but it should not be the only copy. Use separate storage locations and periodically verify that files remain readable.
Replay and inspect what you captured
Do not assume that a successful export means a usable archive. Open it with a compatible replay tool and test a representative sample: the homepage or seed page, internal links, images, documents, and any interaction that matters. Compare the replay with the live page while the original is still available, and note missing elements.
Web archives preserve captured responses, not an eternal copy of every remote service or a guarantee that all browser behavior will survive. The Library of Congress’s format guidance discusses capture limitations and the importance of distinguishing archived material from the live site (Recommended Formats Statement: Web Archives; WARC, Web ARChive file format). If an important page is incomplete, recapture it while possible and update the notes rather than silently treating the archive as complete.

What a screenshot can—and cannot—preserve
A screenshot records a visual state. It can be valuable as evidence of what appeared in a browser at capture time, but it does not preserve the site as navigable pages with their original links, scripts, or response history. For an archival record, use WARC or WACZ as the principal preservation output; use screenshots as supplementary visual documentation when useful.
For a quick visual record, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a WARC crawler. Its one-request API can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and supports full-page captures, element capture, custom waits, cookies, headers, and other capture controls. That can help document a page’s appearance, but it should not be described as a complete website archive.
Or skip the browser setup
For a visual capture rather than a preservation archive, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan.

Troubleshooting common archive failures
Pages or assets are missing from replay
Likely cause: the page was not included in the scope, a resource had not finished loading, or the capture tool could not retrieve it. Fix: check the seed list and capture status, wait for pending resources, visit the missing pages directly during a browser session, and recapture if the source is still available.
Interactive content does not work
Likely cause: the interaction was never triggered during capture, or it depends on a live service or data source that the archive did not preserve. Fix: repeat the relevant user action while capture is active and test replay. Record the limitation if the required response cannot be captured.
A crawl misses pages behind search or login
Likely cause: those pages are not linked through ordinary navigation or require credentials or user actions. Fix: document access requirements and use a permitted, authorized capture workflow that can reach the content; do not claim those pages are included unless replay confirms it.
Recommended Free Tools
Streaming media, databases, or rich media are absent
Likely cause: these are recognized difficult areas for web archiving. The Library of Congress notes limitations involving rich multimedia, streaming media, deep web content, and databases (Recommended Formats Statement: Web Archives). Fix: preserve separately any material you are authorized to retain, document what the web capture omits, and avoid labeling the resulting archive complete.

Likely cause: relying on a single storage device. Fix: create additional copies in separate locations, verify files periodically, and retain the capture metadata with each copy.
Practical checklist
- Define whether the goal is one page, selected pages, an interactive session, or a site crawl.
- Record seed URLs, desired scope, and any access or interaction requirements.
- Capture to WARC or WACZ when a portable web archive is the goal; treat screenshots as supplementary visual records.
- Wait for active and pending capture work to finish, and capture relevant interactions deliberately.
- Export, record capture context and omissions, and retain multiple copies.
- Replay a representative sample and recapture important gaps while the live source remains available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a WARC file guarantee that a website will work exactly as it did live?
No. It contains captured web responses, not a guarantee that every external service, dynamic behavior, or unavailable resource will replay indefinitely.
Can I use a screenshot as my website archive?
A screenshot preserves a visual state, not a navigable collection of the website’s pages and responses. Use it as supporting documentation, not as the main web archive.
Which is better for web archives, WARC or WACZ?
The Library of Congress prefers WARC and lists WACZ as acceptable. Choose a format your capture and replay workflow supports, and keep the format and tool details with the archive.
