Choose the record you need first: use a browser’s full-page screenshot for a visual image, Print → Save to PDF for a paginated document, Firefox’s page-save options for an offline local copy, or Internet Archive Save Page Now for a publicly accessible archive URL. These outputs are not interchangeable, so select one before capturing and verify the saved result afterward.
Decide what kind of archive you need

If the page contains private, logged-in or confidential information, avoid a public archive submission. Save a local file instead and protect it according to your organization’s policy.
Save a complete page as a full-page screenshot
Firefox
- Open the page and wait until the content you need has loaded.
- Launch Firefox’s Screenshot tool from the page context menu or browser controls.
- Select Save full page, not Save visible.
- Download the result as an image, or copy it to the clipboard. Mozilla documents PNG as the downloaded image format and provides keyboard shortcuts for saving or copying.
- Open the downloaded image. Check the top, bottom, lazy-loaded images, fixed headers and any content that appeared only after scrolling.
A full-page image preserves the visual arrangement at capture time, but a very long page becomes a tall bitmap. Text cannot be assumed to remain selectable or searchable, and interactive controls are represented only by their appearance.
Microsoft Edge
- Open the target page.
- Invoke Screenshot from the right-click menu or Edge Settings. Microsoft also documents Ctrl+Shift+S for this tool.
- Choose a full-page capture or a selected area.
- Use the overlay to mark up, copy or save the result.
- Reopen the saved image and inspect the entire length.
Edge’s Screenshot feature and labels can vary by device, market and browser version. If full-page capture is unavailable, update Edge or use Firefox’s Screenshot tool.

Save a webpage as a PDF
PDF creation uses the browser’s print renderer, so always inspect the preview rather than assuming the PDF will match the screen pixel for pixel.
- Open the page in Chrome, Firefox or Edge.
- Choose Print (commonly Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS; confirm the shortcut for your platform).
- In the preview, set the paper size, orientation and page range. Adjust scale and margins when content is clipped or breaks badly.
- Enable background graphics when the preview or output loses colors, panels or images. Edge documents this as a print control; Firefox exposes background printing as well.
- Select Save to PDF or Save as PDF as the destination and save the file.
- Open the PDF in a viewer. Check page breaks, headings, images, links, fonts and any required background elements.
Firefox print controls
Firefox’s print workflow exposes orientation, selected pages, scale, margins, paper format and background options. It also offers an original or simplified format in supported versions. A page can be deliberately styled for paper and therefore look different from its on-screen layout.
Chrome and Edge
Chrome’s print dialog uses Save to PDF. Edge’s print guidance specifically recommends enabling Background graphics when the preview or saved output differs from the webpage. Names and available controls can change with browser updates.

- Web page, complete: saves the HTML with pictures and supporting resources in a separate directory. Mozilla notes that the original HTML link structure may not be retained.
- Web page, HTML only: preserves the original HTML and link structure but omits pictures.
- Text files: creates a text version and does not preserve the original HTML link structure.
After saving, keep the HTML file and its resource directory together. Open the file locally and test images, styles and links before moving or renaming either item.
Create a public archive URL with Internet Archive
Save Page Now is for submitting a page to the Wayback Machine, not for privately storing a file on your computer. The service says it captures the submitted page with images and CSS and returns a permanent URL.
- Open Save Page Now in a browser.
- Enter the page URL and submit it.
- Wait for the capture to finish and copy the resulting Wayback URL.
- Open that URL in a separate window and check that the page, images and styles are present.
Save Page Now captures one submitted page; it does not automatically save outlinks or crawl an entire site. Some pages cannot be captured because of crawling restrictions, and certain SSL configurations can cause failure. The Help Center documentation describes a permanent URL, but you should not infer a guaranteed retention policy or exact reproduction for every page.
Capture pages that change while loading
Dynamic pages need extra checking. Wait for visible content, scroll through the page if images load lazily, and capture only after consent dialogs or overlays have been handled. For a PDF, use the print preview to identify missing sections. For a screenshot, inspect the bottom of the image: an apparently successful download can still omit content below a failed lazy-load boundary.

Authenticated pages, pages protected by bot checks, and highly interactive applications may not archive like a simple public article. The browser methods above describe the capture workflow, not a guarantee that scripts, live data or every interaction will be preserved.

- Confirm that the capture includes the full page, not only the viewport.
- Check images, background colors, fonts and sections loaded after scrolling.
- For PDFs, inspect page breaks, orientation, margins and background graphics.
- Open the saved file on another device or viewer when the record will be used as evidence.
- For a public archive, test the Wayback URL and record the submission date.
- Keep the original page URL and, when relevant, the browser, platform and capture settings alongside the file.
Troubleshooting common failures
The screenshot stops before the bottom
Use the tool’s full-page option, wait for lazy-loaded content, then retry. If the page is extremely long, save sections separately as well as one tall image.
The PDF omits colors or backgrounds
Turn on background graphics in the print dialog, verify the preview and save again. A site’s print stylesheet may intentionally remove screen-only decoration.
Content is clipped or split awkwardly
Change orientation, paper size, scale or margins, and use a narrower page range to isolate the problem. Preview every page before relying on the PDF.

Firefox’s complete save has broken images
Keep the HTML file beside its generated resource folder and reopen the file from that location. If you need original links more than images, choose HTML only instead.
Save Page Now fails
Check the URL, retry later and test whether the site permits crawling. SSL configuration and crawling restrictions can prevent capture; use a local screenshot or PDF when a public archive is not possible.
The archived page contains private data
Do not submit it to a public archive. Use a local PDF, image or Firefox page save, and restrict access to the resulting files.

Keep a screenshot when visual appearance is the evidence. Keep a PDF when pagination, printing or a single shareable document matters. Keep Firefox’s complete local save when offline browsing and resource files are useful. Use Save Page Now when the defining requirement is a public Wayback URL. For important records, retaining two formats—such as a PDF plus a screenshot—can expose differences that one renderer hides.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I archive an entire website with Save Page Now?
No. Internet Archive’s Save Page Now submits one page and does not crawl that page’s outlinks or an entire site.
Will a full-page screenshot preserve clickable links?
No. It is an image. Use a PDF or local HTML save when navigation or selectable text is required, and verify the result because neither format guarantees identical behavior on every site.
Is a browser PDF always searchable?
Do not assume so. The documented print workflows explain layout and destination settings, not a universal text-layer guarantee; open the PDF and test selection or search.
