Open the UPI or bank app that shows the transaction, capture its status and transaction details, then save the original image and—if useful—a PDF copy. Keep the app’s transaction ID or RRN, date, amount, status and any complaint reference readable. A screenshot records what the app displayed; it is not automatically a bank statement or guaranteed proof accepted by every bank or provider.
Capture the refund or failed-payment record in your app

Open the UPI app or bank app where the payment appears and go to its transaction history.

Capture the status screen. If all relevant details do not fit, take additional screenshots of the transaction details and the complaint reference or complaint-status page. Keep the app or bank identity, transaction date and time, amount, transaction ID or RRN, displayed status and complaint reference legible.

Check that each capture is readable and that the relevant information belongs to the same transaction. Do not assume the app has a dedicated “download refund page” feature: buttons and export options vary by app and version.
NPCI’s complaint guidance identifies the bank, transaction date, 12-digit transaction number or RRN, account number and amount as information used to check a transaction or register a complaint with the relevant member institution. The member institution is responsible for resolving the complaint: NPCI complaint portal.
Keep the original image and make a PDF copy if needed
Preserve the unedited capture
Keep the original screenshot file as captured. Give it a useful filename or add a note with the capture date, for example UPI-refund-status_2026-10-03_appname.png. If you need to hide personal details before sharing publicly, create a separate redacted copy and retain the original privately.

Save a PDF using your device’s available options
A PDF can make several screenshots easier to store or send together, but it is simply an archive of those images; it does not make the displayed status more authoritative. Use your phone’s built-in image share, print or document-save function where available. The exact menu sequence depends on the phone, operating system and app, so there is no universal set of PDF-conversion steps. After saving, open the PDF and check that text and identifiers remain legible and that no page is missing.
Know what a screenshot can—and cannot—establish
A screenshot is a record of what the app showed at the time of capture. It does not, by itself, establish that a bank has accepted the claim or replace an official account statement. Google Pay India states: “ATM mini statements and app screenshots aren’t valid bank statements.” Its support guidance says a bank statement covering the transaction date through the dispute date may be requested for an in-app ticket: Google Pay India: Fix problems with transactions.
If your bank, UPI provider or merchant asks for a statement, provide the official statement through its approved support channel as well as any screenshots it requests. Do not describe a screenshot or PDF as legally conclusive or assume every institution will accept it as sufficient evidence.

Track the complaint and follow up through the right channel
Save the complaint reference and capture later status updates too. NPCI says its portal can facilitate transaction-status checks and complaint registration with member institutions; users can follow up with the bank or institution using transaction details or the complaint reference. Its portal also explains that the member institution is responsible for resolving the complaint: NPCI complaint portal.

For the cases covered by its India guidance, Google Pay says a transaction in progress may take up to three working days to resolve and describes a failed debit as being credited back within three working days. This is Google Pay’s advice for those scenarios, not a universal UPI refund deadline. If the money has not been credited after three working days, Google Pay says users can raise an in-app ticket by opening transaction history, selecting the transaction, choosing “Having issues?” and following the instructions. A bank statement may be requested. If money was debited and the merchant says it did not receive the credit or refund, Google Pay directs users to contact their bank about a chargeback; its guidance also points to NPCI’s dispute redressal portal if the issue remains unresolved: Google Pay India transaction guidance.
Separate refund delays from unauthorised transactions
A delayed refund or failed payment is not the same as a fraudulent or unauthorised transaction. NPCI says unauthorised-transaction matters should be raised with the customer’s bank; do not use an ordinary refund-delay path as a substitute for promptly reporting an unauthorised payment. Protect private transaction details

Store screenshots and PDFs somewhere private, not in a public album or post.

Check for UPI IDs, names, account fragments, transaction references and amounts before sharing. Redact only a copy intended for public sharing; preserve the original privately.
