How to Apply SOLID Principles in React Without Overengineering Components

A practical guide to translating SOLID into React’s component and Hook idioms, with a product-filter example and a test for whether an abstraction earns its place.

Apply SOLID in React as a set of design questions, not a mandate to recreate class-heavy architecture. Give components clear UI roles, keep rendering pure, and add a component, Hook, or dependency seam only when it improves understanding, reuse, or isolation.

What SOLID means in a React codebase

SOLID is a set of object-oriented design principles, not a React rulebook. React’s documented idioms center on function components, composition, Hooks, and code that can be understood locally. The mappings below are practical adaptations of those idioms—not official React interpretations of SOLID.

React describes interfaces as small, composable, nestable components, but does not set a universal component size or count. Its guidance is to decide what should be a component while describing the UI. React’s guide to describing the UI is a useful starting point.

React recommends function components for new work. Classes remain supported, but the Component reference says they are not recommended for new components. So the useful React translation of SOLID is usually about function components, composition, Hooks, and explicit dependencies—not inheritance hierarchies.

Start with React’s non-negotiables: pure rendering and controlled calls

React assumes each component is a pure function: given the same inputs, it should produce the same output. Components and Hooks should be idempotent, should not mutate props or state, and should keep side effects out of render. React documents these expectations in Rules of React and Keeping Components Pure.

  • Use render to describe UI from the current props and state.
  • Put side effects in event handlers or, when synchronization with an external system is needed, an Effect—not in render.
  • Do not use an Effect merely to calculate a value that can be derived from current props or state during render.
  • Do not mutate props or state; treat them as snapshots.

React controls when components and Hooks run. Render components through JSX rather than calling component functions as ordinary functions, and follow the Rules of Hooks: call Hooks at the top level of a function component or custom Hook. See React calls Components and Hooks and the Rules of React.

These constraints support local reasoning: a reader should be able to understand a component or Hook by looking at its code in isolation. That is also a practical test for whether an abstraction is helping. React’s purity reference explains this benefit.

Translate each SOLID principle into a React decision

Single responsibility: give a component a clear UI purpose

A component may contain several closely related details without violating a useful React design. A form that owns field interaction and validation can remain one component if those concerns change together and the code remains understandable. Extract a child when it represents a distinct UI responsibility, is reused, or has an independent reason to change.

Do not split every element or event handler into its own component just to shorten a file. Component boundaries should make the interface easier to describe and reason about, not create navigation work for its own sake.

Open/closed: compose known variations instead of predicting every future one

For a small number of known variants, use ordinary composition and explicit props. A slot, render prop, or strategy can help when real variants recur and can be added without making the base component harder to understand. Adding a configurable framework for hypothetical future cases is not a React requirement.

Liskov substitution: keep variants safe to use through a shared contract

In React, explicit props or interchangeable children are often clearer than subclass substitution. Whatever form variation takes, consumers should be able to use the shared component contract predictably rather than learn hidden special cases for each variant.

Interface segregation: keep props relevant to the role

Props should describe what a component actually uses. If it accepts many unrelated options, ask whether it combines separate roles or whether a smaller child or slot boundary would clarify its use. Do not mechanically invent a separate type or wrapper for every cluster of props.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dependency inversion: add a seam only for a real dependency boundary

Put an external dependency behind a small seam when callers genuinely need to swap it, isolate it, or test meaningful behavior independently. A simple component does not need a service container or interface layer just to look architected. Keep external synchronization out of render; use an event handler or an Effect when the behavior calls for one.

Example: build a product filter without fragmenting it

Consider a product-list feature with category and price filters. Keep one feature component responsible for connecting the selected filters to the displayed results. The following illustrative code derives the visible products during render and does not mutate its inputs:

function ProductBrowser({ products }) {
  const [category, setCategory] = useState("all");
  const [maxPrice, setMaxPrice] = useState(Infinity);

  const visibleProducts = products.filter((product) =>
    (category === "all" || product.category === category) &&
    product.price <= maxPrice
  );

  return (
    <section>
      <FilterPanel
        category={category}
        maxPrice={maxPrice}
        onCategoryChange={setCategory}
        onMaxPriceChange={setMaxPrice}
      />
      <ProductList products={visibleProducts} />
    </section>
  );
}

This example assumes useState is imported from React and that the input products have category and numeric price fields. It illustrates a design shape; it is not a tested implementation.

Keep the feature together when that is clearest

If the filter UI appears only here and the state transitions are straightforward, keeping the controls and filtering logic in the feature component can be the clearest option. A component does not become better simply because its lines have been moved elsewhere.

Extract a component for a distinct UI responsibility

FilterPanel is a reasonable child when the controls form a distinct piece of UI, are reused, or have their own styling and change path. It receives the values and callbacks it needs; it does not need to own the entire product feature.

Extract a custom Hook when state logic deserves a name

If filter state transitions and derived filtering logic grow substantial enough to understand separately, a custom Hook such as useProductFilters can group that behavior. Call it at the top level of the component, and keep it focused on the state and calculations that belong together. Do not create a Hook for a single trivial expression merely to add another layer.

Add a dependency seam only when the data source really varies

If products are loaded from an API, keep that external work outside render. A data layer or injected function can be useful if the source is expected to vary or needs isolation for meaningful behavior. If the feature has one stable source and no such need, a service abstraction adds indirection without solving a present problem.

Use this test before extracting a component, Hook, or service

These questions are a practical decision aid, not an official React scorecard:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Does the candidate have a distinct UI purpose or independent reason to change? If not, a new boundary may be arbitrary.
  2. Will extraction make its behavior easier to understand in isolation? A name alone does not guarantee clarity.
  3. Is there actual reuse or a known variation? Avoid building for flexibility that has no concrete use yet.
  4. Is a dependency genuinely likely to change or need isolation? If not, an interface or service layer may be unnecessary.
  5. Does the boundary reduce more complexity than it adds? Account for extra indirection, props, files, and navigation as well as coupling.

Compare the main choices by what they buy and what they cost:

Choice Best fit Check before adding it
Keep logic in the feature component One cohesive UI role with straightforward state and behavior Can a reader follow the feature in one place?
Extract a child component A distinct or reused UI responsibility, or one with an independent change path Does the boundary clarify the UI rather than just move markup?
Extract a custom Hook State transitions or calculations substantial enough to understand separately Does the Hook group behavior that belongs together, and is it called according to Hook rules?
Add a dependency seam A real dependency that must vary, be isolated, or support meaningful independent testing Is that dependency boundary present today, rather than only hypothetical?

The right choice depends on the feature: React sets no official threshold for component count or size, and no single structure fits every UI. The useful outcome is a clear responsibility boundary that preserves local understanding instead of multiplying layers.
