If you lost your Michigan job or your hours were cut, file an unemployment claim through the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) as soon as you become unemployed. Apply online in MiWAM through MiLogin at Michigan.gov/UIA, or call 1-866-500-0017 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Online filing is available 24 hours a day. After filing, register for work through MiTalent.org and complete the required Michigan Works! registration or verification step, certify on the schedule UIA gives you, report gross earnings for the week they were earned, and complete at least three unique work-search activities every week. The three-activity rule applies to weeks beginning July 19, 2026.
UIA decides eligibility from your wage and separation records. Being fired does not automatically disqualify you, and being laid off does not automatically guarantee payment. Your claim, notices and deadlines in MiWAM control what happens next.

What to do first after losing a Michigan job
Do not wait for a former employer to tell you whether you qualify. Start the claim yourself once you are unemployed or underemployed and able to seek suitable full-time work. A practical sequence is:

- File the initial claim online through MiLogin and MiWAM, or by telephone.
- Register as a job seeker through MiTalent.org and complete the required Michigan Works! step.
- Read your Monetary Determination and every MiWAM alert.
- Certify for each assigned period and report any gross wages in the calendar week you performed the work.
- Record at least three different work-search activities for every week claimed.
The current process is generally biweekly. UIA has scheduled the MiUI benefits system for November 9, 2026; after that launch, the agency plans to move certifications and payments to a weekly schedule. Check your account notices because a system transition can change the instructions attached to your claim.

Who may qualify for Michigan unemployment
Michigan unemployment benefits are intended for people who are unemployed or underemployed, able and available for suitable full-time work, actively seeking work and properly registered as job seekers. UIA applies these requirements to the facts of your individual claim.
Being laid off, fired or leaving voluntarily
A layoff generally means the employer no longer has work available, but UIA still verifies the employer’s report and your wage history. A firing is reviewed according to the reason for the discharge; do not assume that the word “fired” alone decides the claim. If you left voluntarily, explain the circumstances accurately. A worker who left because of domestic violence or household safety may qualify under Michigan law effective July 17, 2026, if all other requirements are met.
Give the same dates and explanation to UIA that you gave your employer. Inconsistent answers can delay fact-finding. If UIA asks for a statement, respond by the deadline shown in MiWAM rather than waiting for an informal call from the employer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWage requirements for a 2026 benefit year
For a standard 2026 claim, the wage test includes all of these elements:
- At least $5,328 in one quarter.
- Wages in at least two quarters.
- Total base-period wages of at least 1.5 times the wages in your highest quarter.
The benefit year and base period determine which completed quarters UIA examines. If the standard calculation does not qualify you, UIA may examine an alternate base period or an alternate earnings qualifier using a different set of completed quarters. The applicable calculation is shown in your determination; there is no single alternate dollar threshold stated for every claimant.
How the weekly benefit amount is calculated
For eligible 2026 claims, the weekly benefit rate uses 4.1% of wages in your highest base-period quarter, subject to a $530 weekly maximum. Your wage history generally produces between 14 and 26 potential benefit weeks. The exact amount and duration appear in the Monetary Determination, and they can change if UIA corrects an employer’s wage report or resolves an eligibility issue.
| 2026 claim item | What the published rule says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying quarter | At least $5,328 in one quarter | UIA checks the quarter-by-quarter wages in the applicable base period. |
| Quarter coverage | Wages in at least two quarters | A single high quarter is not enough by itself. |
| Total-wage test | Base-period wages at least 1.5 times the highest-quarter wages | UIA compares your total base-period wages with your highest quarter. |
| Weekly rate | 4.1% of the highest base-period quarter | The calculated rate cannot exceed $530 for 2026 claims. |
| Potential duration | 14 to 26 weeks | UIA determines the number of payable weeks from wage history. |

How to file the initial Michigan claim
Option 1: File online in MiWAM
- Go to Michigan.gov/UIA and sign in to MiLogin.
- Open your MiWAM account or create the account prompted by MiLogin.
- Choose the option to file a new unemployment claim.
- Enter your identity, employer, wage, separation and payment information exactly as requested.
- Review every date and employer before submitting. A wrong last-day-worked date can affect the base period and fact-finding.
- Save the confirmation and watch MiWAM for the Monetary Determination, requests for information and certification instructions.
Online filing is available 24/7. It is usually the most convenient option because you can review entries before submitting and return to the same account for notices and certifications.
Option 2: Apply by telephone
Call UIA at 1-866-500-0017 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Have the same identity, employer, separation and banking information ready. The representative will record your answers and tell you how to access later notices and certifications.

| Telephone | Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. | Follow the representative’s instructions for account access | Claimants who cannot complete the online application or need telephone assistance. |
Use one filing method for the initial claim. Submitting a second claim for the same unemployment period can create duplicate records and delays.
Register for work before your first certification
Filing the claim is not the end of the application. Before your first certification, create a job-seeker account at MiTalent.org. Then complete the Michigan Works! in-person or virtual registration and verification step unless UIA specifically tells you that it is not required in your case.
- Create or update your MiTalent.org job-seeker profile.
- Follow the registration instructions for your local Michigan Works! agency.
- Complete the required in-person or virtual verification.
- Keep the confirmation or appointment record with your unemployment records.
- Check MiWAM to make sure no separate UIA request remains open.
Registration does not replace the weekly work-search requirement. It is a separate condition that must be completed so your claim can proceed.
Read the Monetary Determination carefully
UIA sends a Monetary Determination showing whether your reported wages meet the financial test, the weekly benefit rate and the potential number of weeks. Treat it as a calculation notice, not a guarantee that every week will be payable. A separate issue involving your separation, availability, work search or another requirement can still affect payment.
Check these entries
- Each employer listed for the applicable base period.
- Quarter-by-quarter wages and the highest quarter.
- Your weekly benefit rate and maximum potential weeks.
- The benefit-year dates.
- Any message requesting wage proof or an explanation.
If an employer or wage amount is missing, use the response method and deadline in the notice. Keep copies of pay stubs or other wage records that support your correction. Do not assume that a later certification will fix an incorrect determination automatically.
Certify for benefits and report earnings correctly
Under the current system, UIA generally requires certification every two weeks through MiWAM or MARVIN, according to the call-in or online instructions assigned to your claim. Certify only for the period requested, and do not certify twice for the same weeks.
MiWAM certification
Sign in to MiWAM when your certification window opens, answer each question for the assigned weeks, review the responses and submit. Save the confirmation number or a screenshot for your records. If MiWAM displays an unresolved alert, read it before submitting a new certification.
MARVIN certification
Use MARVIN only when UIA assigns or permits that telephone certification method. Follow the call-in instructions attached to your claim and record the confirmation information. Calling outside the assigned window or for the wrong period can result in an incomplete certification.
Recommended Free Tools
Reporting part-time work
If you worked part time, report your gross earnings for the calendar week in which you performed the work, not the week you received the paycheck. Report the amount before taxes and deductions. Underemployment can produce a partial payment, but failing to report wages can create an overpayment and a separate eligibility problem.
Keep a weekly log with the dates worked, hours, gross wages and employer. If your final paycheck includes vacation pay, severance or another payment, answer the certification questions and provide the details UIA requests rather than deciding on your own that the payment is exempt.
The three-work-search rule in effect July 19, 2026
For every week you claim beginning July 19, 2026, complete and document at least three unique work-search activities. “Unique” means three separate activities, not three entries describing the same contact. Missing the report can stop payment for the affected week.
Build a record that can be verified
Use the work-search categories and entry fields shown in your MiWAM or UIA instructions. For each activity, record:
- Date of the activity.
- Employer, organization or service used.
- Position or opportunity involved, when applicable.
- Contact method or location.
- Any confirmation, reference number or follow-up date.
Keep copies of application confirmations, interview invitations, career-event registrations and other evidence. Do not count the same application, employer contact or event more than once unless UIA’s instructions expressly identify separate qualifying activities.

When an activity is difficult to complete
If illness, transportation, a scheduled interview or another circumstance affects your ability to search, answer the certification questions truthfully and read any UIA instruction about reporting the issue. Do not skip the weekly report because you are waiting for an employer to respond. If you believe a requirement does not fit your circumstances, ask UIA for clarification through the contact method in your account and keep the message record.
When Michigan unemployment payments arrive
UIA says the first payment is often about three weeks after filing, although the actual timing varies with wage verification, separation questions, work registration, unresolved alerts and the date of your first certification. Later payments generally follow successful certification. A three-week estimate is not a promise of approval or a guaranteed deposit date.
Payment can be delayed when:
- Your identity or wage record needs verification.
- An employer disputes the separation or reports different dates.
- You have not completed MiTalent.org and Michigan Works! registration.
- You missed a work-search report or certification deadline.
- You did not answer a MiWAM request by its stated due date.
- Your direct-deposit account is an unsupported online-only digital bank account.
Check MiWAM before calling. The account normally shows whether UIA is waiting for information, has issued a determination or has released a payment.
What to do if you were fired, had hours cut or quit
If you were fired
State the employer’s reason and your response without speculation. UIA may request statements from you and the employer. Continue to certify and complete work searches while the issue is reviewed unless UIA instructs you otherwise; an unresolved separation question does not eliminate your obligation to meet other weekly requirements.
If you were laid off
Enter the employer’s last day worked and the layoff explanation accurately. If the employer expects to recall you, answer any UIA question about recall, availability and suitable work. Continue registering and searching unless a written UIA notice changes your obligation.
If your hours were reduced
You may be underemployed rather than fully unemployed. Report all gross wages in the week performed and certify the weeks you are claiming. UIA calculates whether a partial payment is available from the reported earnings and your weekly benefit rate.
If you left because of domestic violence or household safety
Michigan law effective July 17, 2026 recognizes this circumstance as a possible basis for eligibility when all other requirements are met. Explain the safety-related reason accurately and provide only the documentation UIA requests. The law does not remove the wage, availability, registration or work-search requirements.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using inconsistent employment dates
Compare your application with your final pay stub, separation notice and employer records before filing. If you discover an error, use the correction or message process in MiWAM promptly and keep the submission confirmation.
Best Value
Missing an alert or deadline
MiWAM alerts are time-sensitive. Sign in regularly, open each notice and calendar the response date. A late response can delay a determination or stop payment even when your underlying wage claim appears valid.
Counting the same search three times
Keep three distinct activities each week. A single application followed by three edits or messages is not automatically three unique activities. Follow the categories UIA lists in your account.
Reporting net rather than gross pay
Use gross earnings before tax withholding and deductions, and assign them to the week worked. If you later learn that the amount was wrong, correct it through the channel UIA specifies rather than waiting for an overpayment notice.

How the November 9, 2026 MiUI change affects claimants
UIA has scheduled the MiUI benefits system for November 9, 2026. The agency plans for certifications and payments to become weekly after launch instead of biweekly. Until the change takes effect, follow the schedule shown in your current MiWAM or MARVIN instructions. During and after the transition, read new notices rather than relying on an older calendar, because the assigned certification day and payment timing may change.
Keep your MiLogin credentials, contact information and bank details current before the transition. If UIA gives you a migration instruction, complete it through the account notice and save proof of completion.
Keep your claim on track: a weekly checklist
- Sign in to MiWAM and read every new alert.
- Check that your mailing address, email address and telephone number are current.
- Complete the assigned certification once for the correct period.
- Report gross earnings in the calendar week worked.
- Complete and record three unique work-search activities for each week beginning July 19, 2026.
- Answer UIA requests by the displayed deadline.
- Save confirmation numbers, notices and supporting records.
- Use the current post-November 9 instructions if MiUI replaces the existing schedule.
Where to get help with a Michigan claim
For filing assistance, use the UIA telephone line at 1-866-500-0017 during its Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. hours. For job-seeker registration and verification, follow the instructions from MiTalent.org and your Michigan Works! agency. Your MiWAM account remains the controlling source for claim-specific deadlines, requests and certification instructions.
When you contact UIA, have your claim information, notice dates, confirmation numbers and a concise timeline ready. Ask which requirement is unresolved and what exact document or action will clear it. Keep the response record with your weekly claim files.
Bottom line for a 2026 Michigan applicant
File promptly, complete MiTalent.org and Michigan Works! registration before your first certification, and monitor MiWAM for the Monetary Determination and deadlines. For weeks beginning July 19, 2026, document three unique work-search activities every week. Certify on the schedule UIA assigns, report gross part-time earnings in the week worked, and follow the new weekly process if MiUI launches as scheduled on November 9, 2026. UIA—not the application form alone—decides eligibility, payment amount and payable weeks from your wages, separation and continuing eligibility.
