There is no single application form for research internships and fellowships across India. Each institute and programme sets its own eligibility, materials, deadline, selection process and funding terms. Start by matching opportunities to your subject and current degree year, then follow the latest official call—not an old page or another institute’s rules.
Find calls that fit your subject, study stage and schedule
Search official institute and programme pages using your discipline, current degree and year, and the dates you can attend. Include coordinated fellowship programmes as well as individual institute calls. The Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship Program is one national route for students and teachers studying or teaching in India; its three Academies publish programme details and year-specific instructions (Science Academies programme information).

Use a current, year-specific call to decide whether you can apply. A programme page may remain online after its application window closes, and an old call cannot establish next year’s deadline, eligibility or funding.

Check eligibility before preparing an application
Read the exact call for eligible degree types and years, subjects, institution or enrollment conditions, academic standing, and any required certification. Rules differ even among well-known institutes. The Science Academies’ 2027 instructions list eligible study stages across several degree types; IISc’s 2026 Inorganic and Physical Chemistry fellowship specified particular undergraduate and first-year postgraduate cohorts; IIT Hyderabad’s 2026 SURE call was limited to specified non-IITH cohorts and required certification that applicants ranked in the top 20% of their discipline. These are programme-specific examples, not rules that apply nationally.
#1 Best Overall
If a requirement is unclear, use the contact information on the official call to ask the programme administrators. Do not assume that meeting one institute’s criteria qualifies you for another programme.
Prepare the materials the call actually requests
Build a reusable folder, then tailor the application to each programme. Potentially requested materials include academic records, a CV, research-interest text, details of prior projects, and a teacher’s or institutional contact. Not every programme asks for all of these, and there is no universal personal-statement format established by the cited calls.
Rank #2
- Academic records: Check which examinations and semesters are required, and whether the portal accepts a consolidated transcript or requires individual mark sheets. The Science Academies’ 2027 instructions require mark sheets from Class X through the latest examination.
- CV and project details: Include relevant coursework, skills and project experience accurately. IISER Kolkata’s application form asks for a CV and academic information; IISc’s cited Chemistry page asks about the applicant’s last summer or winter project.
- Research interests and faculty choices: Name specific areas that fit the programme and available faculty options. IISc’s Chemistry application asks for a research-interest description; IISER Kolkata’s form allows up to two preferred faculty members.
- Teacher or institutional contact: Check whether the call asks for a reference, support letter or simply a contact’s email. Science Academies’ programme information asks student applicants for the email address of a teacher familiar with their work.
Before opening the form, note required file formats and sizes, text fields, supporting documents, and any limit on applications. For example, the Science Academies’ 2027 instructions say only one application per candidate will be considered. IISc’s cited Chemistry page says transcripts are not required at its initial application stage, so do not upload documents simply because another programme requests them.

- Open the current call: Confirm the programme year, deadline, eligibility and portal status on the official page.
- Complete the form carefully: Match your entries and uploads to that call’s instructions. Where research interests or faculty preferences are requested, make them specific and truthful.
- Submit before the deadline: Avoid waiting until the final hours in case of upload or portal problems. The Science Academies’ 2027 instructions list 30 November 2026 as the online deadline and say not to send hard copies.
- Save evidence of submission: Keep a copy of the application and any confirmation the portal provides. IISc’s cited Chemistry page advises applicants to submit once and notes that its form displays a saved-data message rather than sending an automatic acknowledgement; follow the instructions for the programme you apply to.
Understand what happens after submission
Selection can involve screening, academic ranking, an interview or additional document checks, depending on the call. IIT Hyderabad’s SURE 2026 process included preliminary screening and potentially an online interview, with selected candidates to be notified by email. Monitor the contact channel stated in your application and keep relevant records available in case they are requested.
Check funding, travel and living costs separately
A stipend does not necessarily cover travel, accommodation, insurance or other expenses. Read the funding and practical-arrangements section of the specific call before accepting a place.
- IISc Inorganic and Physical Chemistry fellowship, 2026: The closed call described a two-month placement, a stipend of ₹8,000 per month for two months, and round-trip second-class train or ordinary bus fare. It said candidates had to arrange accommodation and hold medical insurance valid in Bengaluru during the project. These terms applied to that fellowship, not to all IISc programmes.
- IIT Hyderabad SURE, 2026: The call specified a total fellowship of ₹15,000 for a two-month internship and 250 interns, including 100 places exclusive for girls. Neither figure should be treated as typical of other internships.
Check whether a listed call is still open
These official examples illustrate why the year and portal status matter. They are not a complete directory, and closed calls do not establish the terms of a future cycle.

Before applying, revisit the official page for the relevant year and confirm the application window is open, the eligibility still fits, and the programme’s current funding and selection terms. A past deadline, stipend or intake cannot be assumed to carry forward.
