The official Q&A places particular weight on source-code readability. A programming submission does not have to be a game: reviewers are interested in how the code is structured, written, and explained. A small, complete tool can therefore be more persuasive than an ambitious but unfinished game.
What to submit
- A finished project: Provide a build or clear run instructions, the repository or archive requested by the listing, and a concise description of your personal contribution.

Languages and tools
The Q&A identifies C++ as the main development language and Visual Studio as a principal environment. If your project uses another language or IDE, say why and make the relevant fundamentals visible. English is advantageous because technical papers and books often appear first in English, but the Q&A does not describe English as universally mandatory.
A practical README outline
- Project purpose and the question it solves.
- Features you implemented personally.
- Build, launch, and control instructions.
- System diagram or short architecture explanation.
- One difficult bug or design problem and your resolution.
- Testing method and results, with conditions and limitations.
- Next improvement you would make and why.
Make a designer or artist portfolio easy to judge
The new-graduate Q&A recommends a portfolio that is easy to view, demonstrates range and commitment, and contains finished work. It also recommends showing that you can depict varied people. There is no mandatory item count, but the practical guideline is approximately four to five images for each point or theme you want to demonstrate.

- Open with your strongest finished piece: Put the work that best represents the target role first, not a chronological sketchbook.
- Group by capability: Separate character, environment, prop, concept, modeling, animation, UI, or other relevant categories so reviewers can locate evidence.
- Show process selectively: Include thumbnails, wireframes, turnarounds, lighting tests, or rejected versions when they explain a meaningful decision.
- Label your contribution: For team work, identify exactly what you made and what other contributors handled.
- Keep viewing friction low: Use the requested file type, sensible image dimensions, working links when links are allowed, and filenames that identify the project.
Tools and role fit
The Q&A names Photoshop, SAI, Clip Studio, Illustrator, Maya, 3ds Max, and video-editing software among tools used by designers. A current game-designer listing also mentions office and document tools and welcomes Unreal Engine work experience. Treat these as signals to tailor your portfolio, not as a promise that every tool is required. Put the tools used for each piece in its caption and prioritize the tools named as required or preferred in the opening you selected.
Demonstrate range without looking unfocused
Range is useful when it supports the role: varied ages, body types, costumes, materials, camera angles, environments, or production constraints. A large collection of unrelated studies can obscure your strengths. Keep the selection coherent, finish enough pieces to show execution, and add a short note explaining the design goal and the feedback or revision that shaped each major piece.
Prepare planner, director, and cross-functional evidence
Planner applications
A proposal document is not mandatory according to the Q&A, but it can be a useful way to demonstrate skill. If you include one, make it a compact production document rather than a pitch full of unsupported claims. Define the player, objective, core loop, constraints, example content, and how you would evaluate whether the idea works.

Director and leadership evidence
For direction-oriented roles, show how you set priorities, handled competing feedback, maintained scope, and kept a team moving. A postmortem, milestone plan, or before-and-after feature decision can reveal more than a list of responsibilities.
Cross-disciplinary preparation
The Q&A says beginner knowledge across disciplines is helpful but not mandatory. You do not need to present yourself as an expert in every function. Instead, show that you can ask useful questions, understand another discipline’s constraints, and adjust your work so the team can use it.
For every role, explain the same three elements: what you aimed to do, what actions you took, and what result followed. Add how you considered teammates or the player. This structure keeps an answer concrete without inflating your contribution.
Do you need fighting-game experience or Japanese?
Fighting-game knowledge is not a prerequisite
Arc System Works’ official Q&A says, 「格闘ゲームの知識が無くても構いません。」 (“It is fine not to have fighting-game knowledge.”) It also says, 「弊社のゲーム経験の有無も選考には関わりませんのでご安心ください。」 (“Whether you have experience with our games does not affect selection.”) You can apply with work from another genre or a non-game technical project.
What matters is transferable evidence: responsive interaction, readable systems, visual communication, problem solving, iteration, or an understanding of how a player experiences your work. If you do know fighting games, discuss a specific design observation rather than treating fandom as a qualification.

Japanese and English depend on the route
Do not assume one language rule covers every Arc System Works job. The Japanese recruitment listing may specify Japanese forms or interview expectations, while a regional route can set its own document language. English is described as advantageous for technical reading and for email communication with overseas companies or creators, but it is not stated as mandatory for every applicant.
How international applicants should proceed
The Arc System Works Asia recruitment page gives a specific regional instruction: send a Japanese-language résumé or application in Word or PDF format by email. - Confirm that the Asia page covers the country, office, and job you want.
- Read the target role’s own language, format, and eligibility requirements.

- Keep the sent files and timestamp, then wait for the separate contact described after document screening.
If the target listing does not identify an international route, do not substitute the Asia instructions without confirmation. Ask the recruiting contact named in the listing which office and document set apply.

The Q&A warns that typographical errors and missing materials can result in exclusion. It also says forms are checked for writing that considers the reader. Treat the application as a deliverable, not as an administrative formality.
Final submission checklist
- Correct company name, role title, employment track, and contact details.
- Every required field completed; no unexplained gaps or contradictory dates.
- Résumé, portfolio, source archive, proposal, and other files attached exactly as requested.
- Correct Word, PDF, image, video, or archive format and within any stated size limit.
- Links open without a login, expired permission, or missing dependency when links are allowed.
- Project names, filenames, captions, and README instructions match one another.
- Japanese text, names, honorifics, and technical terms proofread by a qualified reader where possible.
- A second person has checked both the written application and the attachment list.
- You retained a final copy of every submitted file.
Write for the reviewer’s limited time
Lead each answer with the point, then provide evidence. Replace “I am passionate about games” with a specific action, such as rebuilding a system after a playtest exposed a problem, documenting an interface so another discipline could use it, or reducing a recurring source of errors. Keep explanations short enough to scan, but include the context needed to interpret a result.
Use a goal–action–result story for every major project
A portfolio page or interview answer becomes stronger when it follows a repeatable structure:
- Goal: State the player, team, or technical problem and the constraint that mattered.
- Action: Describe the decisions you personally made, the tools you used, and how you worked with others.
- Result: Give the observed outcome, test condition, or shipped artifact. If the result was inconclusive, say so and explain what you would test next.
This format helps reviewers distinguish your work from a group’s work and shows follow-through without requiring exaggerated claims.
Historical facts you should interpret carefully
Arc System Works was established in 1988, according to its official company and recruitment pages. The new-graduate Q&A reported an application ratio of approximately 2.6% in October 2020. That figure is historical context, not a current acceptance-rate forecast: recruiting volume, applicant pools, roles, and selection methods can all change.
