Do not wait for your Record of Employment (ROE): Service Canada allows required records to be supplied after the application. Waiting more than four weeks after your last day of work can cost you benefits.
Set aside about an hour, gather your identity, banking and employment details, submit the application, then monitor My Service Canada Account (MSCA) and complete reports every two weeks. Service Canada—not the application form—makes the final decision on eligibility, benefit rate and duration.

What to do first
Start the official online EI application immediately after your work stops. The application can be completed from home, at an internet kiosk in a Service Canada Centre or through a public internet-access location such as a library. Choose the option that gives you a private place to enter sensitive information and a dependable internet connection.
The online form takes about one hour. If you leave before submitting it, the draft is saved for 72 hours; after that, it is deleted and you must start again. A delay of more than four weeks after your last day of work may reduce or eliminate benefits, so do not postpone filing while waiting for paperwork.

Applying promptly does not mean you are promising that you qualify. It preserves the opportunity for Service Canada to examine your circumstances, hours, earnings and separation from employment. The department—not an employer, calculator or online form—makes the decision.
Information and documents to gather
Having the following details ready reduces errors and processing delays:
- Your Social Insurance Number (SIN).
- The last name at birth of one parent.
- Your mailing and residential addresses, including postal codes.
- Your bank name, transit number and account number if you want direct deposit.
- Details for every employer in the previous 52 weeks, or since the start of your last EI claim if that period is shorter.
- For each job: the employer’s name and address, employment start and end dates, and the reason the employment ended.
- Your own account of what happened if you quit or were dismissed.
Gathering the work history before opening the form is useful because the application asks about all relevant employment, not only your most recent employer. If you had several jobs, have each employer’s dates and address available. If you are unsure about a date, use your records and explain any uncertainty rather than silently omitting the job.

Check spellings and dates before submitting. The application checklist specifically warns that an inaccurate entry, such as a misspelled parent’s last name at birth, can delay processing. On a shared computer, protect your SIN and banking information, sign out of every government session and close the browser when finished.
Apply even when your ROE is missing
Service Canada needs Records of Employment from relevant employers to assess your hours, earnings and reason for separation, but the government says you can send required documents after filing. Submit the application first rather than waiting for an ROE.
After applying, check MSCA for electronic ROEs. Ask an employer for a paper ROE if one is not appearing electronically and send it as soon as possible. Keep copies of anything you submit and note when it was sent. Missing records can hold up a decision, but waiting to apply creates a separate risk because the four-week filing warning still applies.
An ROE is evidence used in the assessment; it is not the application itself. An employer’s delay in issuing one should not cause you to miss the filing window. Continue checking MSCA because an electronic ROE may appear after you have already applied, and Service Canada may send a message asking for clarification or another document.
Step-by-step application process
- Open the online EI regular-benefits application. Start as soon as you stop working. You do not need to have the ROE in hand.
- Complete the identity and contact sections. Enter your SIN, the parent’s last name at birth, residential and mailing addresses and postal codes exactly as requested.
- Add direct-deposit information, if desired. Enter the bank name, transit number and account number carefully. Incorrect banking details can prevent a payment from reaching you.
- List your recent employment. Include every employer in the applicable 52-week period, or since the beginning of the previous EI claim when that period is shorter. Provide employer addresses, dates and the reason each job ended.
- Explain a quit or dismissal in your own words. Do not omit the job because you think the separation automatically disqualifies you. Service Canada assesses the circumstances of each case.
- Review and submit. Check names, dates, SIN digits, contact information and banking numbers. If you stop before submission, return within 72 hours or the saved draft will be deleted.
- Send outstanding records. Look for electronic ROEs in MSCA, request paper records from employers and provide any other information Service Canada asks for.
After submission, save the confirmation details and retain copies of your answers where possible. You may need to refer to the dates or explanation you entered if Service Canada asks follow-up questions. Keep your telephone number, address and email details current so a request does not go unanswered.

- held insurable employment;
- lost the job through no fault of your own, subject to case-specific exceptions and current temporary measures;
- had at least seven consecutive days without work and without pay during the qualifying period;
- accumulated enough insurable hours;
- are ready, willing and capable of working each day; and
- are actively looking for work.
These conditions continue after the application. A claimant generally must remain available for suitable work and continue an active search while receiving regular benefits. Keep a written job-search record with the employers contacted, dates, positions and outcomes. Service Canada may ask for evidence of your availability and search activity.
A resignation or dismissal is not a reason to skip the application: provide the facts and allow the department to assess them. The phrase “no fault” is not a shortcut for deciding your own case. Particular circumstances and current temporary measures can affect how a separation is treated.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe qualifying period
The qualifying period is normally the 52 weeks before your claim starts. If you had a previous benefit period, it is usually the period since that earlier claim began when that is shorter. In specified situations, the period can be extended to a maximum of 104 weeks. The applicable period and any extension depend on your circumstances.
Insurable-hour requirement
The required hours depend on the unemployment rate in your EI economic region, not on a single national threshold. The current published range is:
| Regional unemployment rate | Insurable hours generally required |
|---|---|
| Above 13% | 420 |
| 6% or lower | 700 |
Intermediate regional rates fall between those endpoints in the government’s economic-region table. A prior EI violation can increase the hours required. Use the official economic-region lookup for your address and claim-start date rather than relying on the two endpoint figures or an assumed national number. The region used for your claim and the date your claim starts matter, so a threshold quoted for another city or another month may not apply to you.
How much EI could pay and for how long
Weekly benefit rate
For most claimants, regular EI pays 55% of average insurable weekly earnings, subject to the annual maximum. For claims in 2026, the maximum yearly insurable earnings are $68,900 and the maximum weekly benefit is $729. These figures apply from January 1, 2026 and can change in a later year.
How Service Canada calculates the rate
The calculation uses your required number of best weeks of insurable earnings and a divisor tied to unemployment in your EI economic region, then applies the 55% rate. The number of best weeks used is between 14 and 22. Because both your earnings history and regional unemployment rate matter, a salary estimate alone cannot determine your actual payment.
The “best weeks” method means Service Canada does not simply divide your last paycheque or use one annual salary figure. It examines insurable earnings in the applicable period, selects the required number of higher-earning weeks and applies the regional divisor before calculating the benefit. The verified ROEs and other records therefore matter to the final amount.
Number of payable weeks
Regular benefits can last from 14 to 45 weeks. The result depends on the unemployment rate in your region when the claim is filed and your insurable hours in the qualifying period. Service Canada determines the individual entitlement; there is no single duration for all Canadian applicants.

Waiting period, decision time and first payment
The normal EI waiting period is one unpaid week for claims beginning January 1, 2017 or later. Temporary measures can change waiting-period rules for claims in a specified window, so check the government’s current temporary-measures information when you apply.

Service Canada’s service standard is a decision within 28 days, with an objective of meeting that standard 80% of the time. If you are eligible and all required information has been supplied, the first payment is expected about 28 days after applying. These are service targets, not a promise for an individual claim; missing ROEs or other information can extend the timeline.
Plan for the possibility that the first payment will not arrive immediately. Keep checking MSCA for messages, and respond promptly if the department asks about employment dates, separation details, availability or another missing record. Prompt responses help avoid a preventable pause in processing.
What arrives after you apply
Service Canada mails a benefit statement and a four-digit access code. Use the code with your SIN to file reports online or by telephone. Keep the statement and code secure.
MSCA provides the main status view for your claim. Depending on the stage of processing, you can see the claim start and end dates, weekly benefit rate, number of entitlement weeks and the last report processed. MSCA messages also identify requests for additional information. Check the account regularly and keep your address, telephone number and banking information current.

Receiving it means you can complete reports; it does not confirm that Service Canada has approved the claim or set the final amount.
Biweekly reports are required for payment
After the claim is established, submit a report every two weeks. Reports confirm that you continue to meet the conditions for payment. You have three weeks from the stated next-report date to complete a report.
Report every period of work and all earnings accurately, even if the employer has not yet paid you. Failing to report earnings can create an overpayment that you must repay and may affect your claim. Continue documenting your job search and your availability for work in case Service Canada requests it.
Mark the next-report date shown in your statement or account. Missing a report can interrupt payments, while inaccurate reporting can create a debt later. If your situation changes—such as returning to work or no longer being available—answer the report questions truthfully so Service Canada can reassess the claim.

If Service Canada asks for more information
Respond through the channel and by the deadline shown in MSCA or in the department’s correspondence. Typical requests may concern an ROE, employment dates, the reason work ended, availability or job-search activity. Supply a clear explanation and retain proof of delivery.
If your contact details or banking information change, update them promptly in MSCA. An outdated address can cause you to miss a letter or benefit statement; incorrect banking information can delay a deposit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If your claim is refused or the result is wrong
MSCA displays the decision and reasons when Service Canada declines a claim. Read the explanation against the facts you supplied, including your hours, separation circumstances and availability.
You may request reconsideration within 30 days after the decision is communicated. State which decision you are challenging, explain why you believe it is incorrect and include supporting information. Missing the 30-day period can affect your review rights, so act promptly. A reconsideration request is not a new EI application; it asks Service Canada to review the decision in light of your explanation and evidence.

| Service Canada Centre internet kiosk | You need internet access or a government location. | Use the kiosk’s privacy controls and log out fully before leaving; ask staff about available assistance. |
| Public internet access, such as a library | You do not have a suitable device or connection at home. | Choose a private setting where possible, avoid saving passwords and close the session completely. |
Regardless of location, the claim is submitted through the same government application. A printer, paid application service or special computer is not required. If you use a public device, do not allow the browser to remember your SIN, access code or banking credentials.
Use the Benefits Estimator only for planning
The free government Benefits Estimator can provide an estimate based on your answers. It is useful for budgeting before a decision, but it does not establish eligibility or guarantee the final weekly amount. Service Canada’s calculation uses your verified earnings, best weeks, regional unemployment rate and insurable hours.
Use an estimate as a planning range rather than a promise. The actual result can differ when ROEs, regional rules, a prior EI claim or the circumstances of a separation are assessed.
Temporary measures and date-sensitive rules
Temporary EI measures can alter the way a separation or waiting period is treated for claims in a defined window. The current government information identifies a separation-related measure for claims starting October 11, 2026 through October 9, 2027. That measure is time-limited; do not apply its treatment to claims outside those dates. Check the live government temporary-measures page immediately before submitting, because the rule can expire or change.

Common mistakes that slow an EI claim
- Waiting for an ROE before applying.
- Filing more than four weeks after the last day of work.
- Leaving the application draft untouched beyond its 72-hour save period.
- Misspelling the parent’s last name at birth or entering an incorrect SIN.
- Omitting an employer from the applicable work history.
- Giving only a short label such as “quit” or “fired” instead of the facts behind the separation.
- Using a generic hours threshold instead of the one for your EI economic region.
- Ignoring MSCA messages or requests for records.
- Failing to report work or earnings on biweekly reports.
- Letting the 30-day reconsideration period expire after a refusal.
A practical sequence from last day of work to first payment
- On or immediately after your last day, collect your SIN, addresses, banking details and employment history.
- Submit the online application, even if no ROE is available yet.
- Watch MSCA for electronic ROEs, messages and the claim status.
- Send paper ROEs or other requested documents as soon as they are available.
- Record your job-search activity and remain ready, willing and capable of working.
- Use the mailed access code and SIN to complete each report every two weeks, reporting all work and earnings.
- Review the decision in MSCA. If refused, request reconsideration within 30 days of communication.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to wait for my ROE before applying for EI?
No. Apply as soon as you stop working. Service Canada allows required documents to be supplied afterward. Check MSCA for an electronic ROE, request a paper copy from the employer when needed, and send it promptly.
Best Value
How late can I apply for regular EI benefits?
Apply immediately. Waiting more than four weeks after your last day of work may cause you to lose benefits, even if an ROE has not arrived.
How many hours do I need for EI?
The requirement depends on the unemployment rate in your EI economic region and can range from 420 hours where the rate is above 13% to 700 hours where it is 6% or lower. Use the official regional table for your claim-start date. A prior EI violation can increase the requirement.
Can I apply if I quit or was dismissed?
Yes. Provide a complete account of what happened. Service Canada assesses the circumstances and any applicable exceptions or temporary measures; do not decide your own eligibility by skipping the application.
How long does an EI decision take?
Service Canada’s standard is a decision within 28 days, with an objective of meeting that standard 80% of the time. It is a service target, not a guarantee. Missing information can extend processing.
When will my first EI payment arrive?
If you are eligible and all required information has been provided, the first payment is expected about 28 days after applying. The normal waiting period is one unpaid week, although temporary measures may change rules for specified claim windows.
What happens if I forget to report earnings?
Unreported work or earnings can create an overpayment that you must repay and may affect your claim. Report every period of work and all earnings accurately on each biweekly report.
How do I challenge a refusal?
Read the decision and reasons in MSCA and request reconsideration within 30 days after the decision is communicated. Explain what you believe is wrong and include supporting information.
The Bottom Line
Apply online immediately after work stops, even without an ROE. Prepare accurate identity and employment information, monitor MSCA, submit every biweekly report and verify the current regional and temporary rules that apply to your claim.
