In NSWS, choose Add Approvals → Central Approvals → Registration as a Startup, complete the self-certification, upload your incorporation or registration certificate and supporting evidence, then submit using the startup’s own contact details. Startup India says the application is free and that no private agency, representative or franchise has been appointed to issue the recognition.
Before filing, confirm your entity type, incorporation date, turnover history and innovation or scalable-impact evidence. The current Startup India recognition summary uses different age and turnover ceilings from legacy text still visible in part of the online form, so applicants close to a threshold should verify the latest notification and the live NSWS form before certifying eligibility.

What DPIIT startup recognition is—and what it is not
DPIIT recognition is an official acknowledgment by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under India’s Startup India framework. It can make a business eligible to apply for certain government benefits and exemptions, subject to the separate rules for each benefit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecognition is not incorporation, a licence to operate, a patent, a quality certification or an automatic tax holiday. You first need a legally registered entity, then apply for recognition. Tax relief under Section 80-IAC requires a separate application and separate eligibility assessment; recognition alone does not grant it.

The Startup India portal identifies the central NSWS approval as Registration as a Startup. The certificate generated after approval is digitally verifiable and can be downloaded from the portal.
Check eligibility before opening the form
The recognition page currently lists the following framework. Treat every criterion as a condition you must be able to self-certify, not as a box to tick without evidence.
| Criterion | Current Startup India summary | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Permitted legal form | Private limited company, registered partnership firm, limited liability partnership (LLP) or cooperative society | Have the incorporation or registration certificate for the exact applicant entity. |
| Age | Up to 10 years from incorporation for a standard startup; up to 20 years for a DeepTech startup | Use the incorporation date shown on your government certificate and confirm which DeepTech definition applies. |
| Turnover | Below ₹200 crore in any previous financial year for a standard startup; below ₹300 crore for DeepTech | Review turnover for every relevant previous financial year, not only the latest year. |
| Business activity | Work toward innovation or improvement of products, services or processes, or have a model with potential to generate employment or create wealth | Prepare a concise explanation tied to products, technology, process changes, customers, jobs or economic value. |
| Prohibited formation | An entity formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business is excluded | Be ready to explain the origin of the venture and distinguish a new business from a reorganisation of an old one. |
How to handle the age and turnover wording conflict
A Startup India form view still contains legacy self-certification language referring to a 10-year limit and a ₹100 crore turnover limit. Elsewhere in the same form, an explanatory note states ₹200 crore for non-DeepTech startups and ₹300 crore for DeepTech startups. The current recognition summary uses the 10-year/20-year and ₹200 crore/₹300 crore framework.
This is a material inconsistency, not a reason to guess. If your age or turnover is near any limit, check the latest governing notification and the live NSWS form, and seek clarification from Startup India before submitting a declaration. Do not replace the current summary’s figures with the old ₹100 crore figure without confirmation, and do not assume that selecting “DeepTech” automatically extends the limit unless your business meets the applicable definition.
DeepTech classification needs extra care
The available guidance identifies a longer 20-year period and a ₹300 crore ceiling for DeepTech, but the exact governing notification language and the detailed classification test are not reproduced in the available page material. Keep technical evidence that explains the underlying research, engineering or scientific development, and verify the current notification before relying on DeepTech treatment.

Prepare the application package
Gather the files and explanations before you start the NSWS workflow. A complete, internally consistent submission is easier to review than a collection of generic marketing documents.
1. Incorporation or registration certificate
The official FAQ names this as a core document. The displayed recognition form accepts a PDF, PNG or JPG and shows a maximum file size of 5 MB. Use the certificate for the applicant entity, ensure the legal name matches the NSWS account and application, and make sure every page is readable.
2. Authorisation letter
The form asks for an authorization letter on company letterhead. State the entity’s legal name, identify the person authorised to submit the recognition application, and have the appropriate founder, director or partner sign it. Keep the signatory details consistent with your constitutional records.
3. Innovation or scalable-impact explanation
The FAQ asks for an explanation of how the startup is working toward innovation, development or improvement of a product, service or process, or how its model can generate employment or create wealth. Write about the actual business rather than copying broad claims such as “we use technology.” Explain:
- the customer problem or operational gap;
- what you have built, changed or validated;
- why the approach is a meaningful improvement;
- how the product, service or process can be developed or scaled; and
- the employment, productivity, market or wealth-creation potential.
Use measurable facts where you have them, but do not invent users, revenue, patents, jobs or technical performance. The application is a self-certification and false information can lead to revocation.

4. Supporting links or documents
The form gives examples including a website, video, pitch deck or patent evidence. Choose material that proves the specific statements in your explanation. A working product page, prototype demonstration, architecture or process video can be more useful than a long promotional deck.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →5. Stage-specific proof
For a validation-stage startup, the form asks for proof of concept, such as a website, video or pitch deck showing the prototype or service. For early traction or scaling, provide a website or video/pitch deck with supporting material that demonstrates the operating model and development. If a link is private, explain how an assessor can access it and ensure it remains available during review.
Step-by-step: submit through NSWS
- Create or use the startup’s NSWS account. Register with the startup’s own legal and contact details. Use a monitored email address and mobile number because portal notices and the certificate are tied to the account.
- Open the approvals catalogue. From the NSWS dashboard, select Add Approvals, then Central Approvals.
- Find the correct approval. Search for Registration as a Startup and add it to your dashboard. Do not select an unrelated state approval or a tax-exemption application.
- Complete the entity details. Enter the legal name, entity type, incorporation or registration date and other requested particulars exactly as they appear on the certificate. Inconsistencies can trigger an incomplete request.
- Answer the eligibility self-certification. Review the age, turnover, business-activity and prohibited-reorganisation statements. If the displayed form uses wording that conflicts with the current summary, pause and verify the governing requirement before certifying.
- Describe the business. Explain the innovation, product, service or process improvement, or the credible potential for employment or wealth creation. Link each important assertion to evidence you upload or provide.
- Upload the documents. Add the incorporation or registration certificate, authorization letter and appropriate supporting material. Check file type, size, legibility and whether links open without a login problem.
- Review the declaration. Confirm that the information is true, current and supported. Recognition can be revoked when information is false or required documents were not uploaded.
- Submit and save the acknowledgement. Download or record the application reference and keep a copy of the submitted form and files. You will need the account dashboard to follow status changes.
Cost, intermediaries and account security
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry states: “Ministry of Commerce and Industry does not charge any fee for DPIIT ‘Certificate of Recognition’ or ‘Certificate of Eligibility’ for startups.” Startup India also states: “Application for DPIIT ‘Certificate of Recognition’ and ‘Certificate of Eligibility’ should be filed by the startup on its own, using own details/mobile no./email.”
Those statements mean an agent is not required and no agency, representative or franchise has been appointed by DPIIT for this certificate. A lawyer, company secretary or other professional may be useful for optional legal or compliance advice, but do not treat a paid intermediary as an official DPIIT channel. Never hand over control of the startup’s email, mobile number or NSWS credentials merely to have a form uploaded.
What happens after submission
Typical processing time
The Startup India FAQ says recognition is typically issued within two working days after successful submission. This is a typical estimate, not a guaranteed service level. Missing files, inconsistent information, portal issues or a request for clarification can extend the practical timeline.

Approval and certificate
When approved, the portal generates a verifiable recognition certificate that you can download. Store the file in the company’s records and keep the account email and mobile number current so future notices are not missed.
Recognition does not equal every benefit
Recognition may be a prerequisite for particular schemes, but each scheme has its own application, dates and conditions. Section 80-IAC is a separate example: Startup India says an already-recognized startup may apply separately, and its recognition page identifies private limited companies and LLPs incorporated after 1 April 2016 as eligible entity categories for that separate exemption. Do not represent the recognition certificate as an automatic tax holiday.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the portal marks the application incomplete
Check the dashboard for the exact deficiency and correct the relevant field or file rather than submitting a new application immediately. The FAQ says an incomplete application can be edited from the applicant account. It also says that after an application has been marked incomplete three times, it is rejected.
Before each resubmission, use this review:
- Does the legal name and incorporation date match the certificate?
- Is the certificate within the 5 MB limit and fully readable?
- Is the authorization letter on letterhead and signed by an authorised person?
- Do the innovation and impact claims have corresponding evidence?
- Do all website, video and document links work for an assessor?
- Have you addressed the exact deficiency noted by the portal?
The FAQ says a rejected application cannot be edited and that a new application may be filed after three months from the rejection email. Portal rules can change, so confirm the current dashboard instructions and official guidance when this situation occurs. Keep the rejection email and corrected evidence to avoid repeating the same defect.
Common mistakes that delay recognition
Using the wrong route
Searching for a generic “startup certificate” or applying through a commercial website can lead you away from the NSWS approval. The official route is the central approval named Registration as a Startup.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Submitting a generic pitch
An attractive deck does not by itself demonstrate innovation or scalable impact. Tie the explanation to the product, process, technology, customer problem and evidence requested in the form.
Ignoring the historical threshold text
Applicants who rely on the old ₹100 crore wording may incorrectly reject themselves; applicants who rely on a preferred threshold without checking the current notification may make a false declaration. Resolve the discrepancy before submission when it affects your case.
Confusing recognition with incorporation or tax approval
DPIIT recognition comes after entity formation and does not replace company, partnership, labour, tax or sector-specific registrations. It also does not automatically approve Section 80-IAC relief.
Letting an intermediary use its own contact details
The ministry’s instruction is to file with the startup’s own details, mobile number and email. Using someone else’s credentials can make status tracking and certificate retrieval difficult and conflicts with the stated filing instruction.
Applicant checklist
- Entity is a private limited company, registered partnership firm, LLP or cooperative society.
- Incorporation age and turnover are checked against the current Startup India summary and, where relevant, the latest notification.
- DeepTech treatment is claimed only after verifying the applicable definition.
- The entity was not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
- Incorporation or registration certificate is legible and within the displayed 5 MB limit.
- Authorization letter is prepared on company letterhead.
- Innovation, improvement, employment or wealth-creation explanation is specific and evidence-backed.
- Prototype, website, video, pitch deck or patent material supports the claims made.
- NSWS account uses the startup’s own email and mobile number.
- Application reference, submitted files and portal messages are saved.
Bottom line
For most eligible Indian startups, the process is a free, self-filed NSWS application: verify the entity and thresholds, prepare the certificate and evidence, select Central Approvals → Registration as a Startup, submit accurate self-certification and monitor the dashboard. Because legacy ₹100 crore wording remains visible in part of the form while the current summary states ₹200 crore for standard startups and ₹300 crore for DeepTech, applicants near a boundary should verify the live requirement before filing.
