Your broker, bank, depository participant, registrar or other eligible intermediary submits the bid, and the IPO sponsor bank sends a UPI mandate. You approve that mandate with your UPI PIN so the bid amount is blocked in your own bank account. Money is debited only for shares allotted to you; the balance is released if you receive a partial allotment, and the full block is released if you receive no shares.
For a retail application, the UPI route is limited to ₹5 lakh per transaction under current SEBI guidance. The exact application closing time, mandate cut-off, allotment date and release date belong to the particular issue, so the live exchange issue page and the prospectus take precedence over a general timetable.

What an IPO application through UPI actually does
UPI is the payment mechanism for an ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount) application. It authorizes your bank to place a lien or block on the amount needed for your bid while the IPO process runs. The amount remains in your bank account and continues to earn applicable interest until it is debited or released.

- You enter an IPO bid through an eligible intermediary and provide your own PAN, demat details and UPI ID.
- The intermediary sends the bid to the exchange and the IPO sponsor bank creates a UPI mandate.
- The mandate appears in the UPI app linked to that UPI ID. You check the issue, amount and bank account, then approve with your UPI PIN.
- The bank reports the amount as blocked. Only then is the UPI IPO application treated as complete.
- After allotment, the bank debits the value of the shares allotted, or releases some or all of the block.
SEBI describes the facility this way:
“Investors can now invest in securities in Initial Public Offers (IPOs) by using Unified Payment Interface (UPI) as a payment mechanism.”
A pending, declined, expired or never-received mandate is not a successful application, even if you entered the bid before the issue closed.
Accounts and details you must have before bidding
- Active PAN: The PAN in the bid must match the investor record used for the demat account.
- Demat account: Shares, if allotted, are credited to this account. Keep the DP ID and client ID available and enter them exactly as recorded.
- Bank account in your own name: The account must be able to place UPI blocks and must be linked to the UPI ID you submit.
- Eligible UPI ID and app: Not every UPI handle or app supports public-issue mandates. Check the current eligibility information published by the relevant exchange, SEBI and NPCI, and make sure public-issue notifications are enabled.
- Funds for the full bid: The bank must be able to block the entire bid amount when the sponsor bank attempts the mandate. A later deposit may be too late.
- Working UPI PIN and app access: You need to approve the mandate inside the app before its expiry or the issue cut-off.
Use only an account and UPI ID belonging to the applicant. SEBI does not consider an application made with a third party’s UPI ID or bank account for allocation.
Where to submit the IPO bid
The UPI approval happens in your app, but the bid itself must be entered through an eligible channel. A practical comparison is:
| Route | What you do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Syndicate member | Enter the issue, quantity, price or cut-off choice, PAN, demat details and UPI ID on the member’s application channel. | It is authorized for the issue and can display mandate and application status. |
| Registered stock broker | Use the broker’s IPO section or application flow, then approve the request in the linked UPI app. | The broker is registered and the displayed PAN, demat account and UPI ID are yours. |
| Depository participant | Apply through the eligible DP’s issue facility and provide the same identity and payment details. | The DP supports public-issue UPI mandates and has a process for re-initiation. |
| Registrar and transfer agent | Use the registrar’s authorized application facility when it accepts UPI applications for that issue. | You are using the registrar’s verified channel, not an unsolicited link or message. |
Compare channels on eligibility, support for public-issue UPI, ease of approving the mandate, the ability to correct or re-initiate a failed request before closing, and the quality of status and grievance support. Do not assume that a familiar UPI app supports IPO mandates or that an unverified intermediary can submit a valid bid.

Step-by-step: apply for an IPO with UPI
1. Read the issue terms and calculate the bid
Open the issue information in the intermediary’s verified IPO section and read the price band, lot size, minimum lots, issue dates and investor-category rules. Decide whether to enter a specific price or the cut-off option when the issue offers it.
For a price-based bid, calculate the amount as quantity multiplied by the selected price. For example, if one lot has 100 shares and you bid for two lots at ₹150, the amount to be blocked is ₹30,000. If you choose cut-off, the application uses the final discovered issue price, subject to the issue rules. Keep enough available balance for the complete amount, not merely the minimum lot.

- Sign in to the verified broker, syndicate member, DP or registrar channel.
- Select the IPO and investor category that applies to you.
- Enter the number of lots or shares, price or cut-off choice, PAN, demat details and your own UPI ID.
- Review every field, especially the UPI ID, DP ID, client ID and PAN, before submitting.
- Submit the bid and save the application number or confirmation screen.
Typing a UPI ID incorrectly can prevent the request from starting or send it to a different ID. A corrected UPI ID normally requires a fresh request through the same intermediary; editing a notification that was sent elsewhere will not repair the original bid.
3. Find the mandate in your UPI app
The IPO sponsor bank sends the block request to the UPI ID supplied with the bid. Depending on the app, it may appear under mandates, pending requests, IPO, or an equivalent section rather than as a normal collect payment. If you do not see it, check that notifications are enabled, open the app manually, confirm that the submitted ID is the one registered on the phone, and verify that the app and handle are eligible for public issues.
4. Inspect the request before approving
Check the issuer or issue name, bid amount, applicant name where shown, and the bank account from which the block will be placed. Reject a request that shows an unfamiliar issue, amount, account or UPI address. An IPO mandate should not ask you to disclose your UPI PIN to a person, call centre or intermediary.

5. Approve with the UPI PIN
Approve the mandate inside the UPI app with your UPI PIN. The PIN authorizes a block; it does not transfer the entire amount to the issuer at that moment. Wait for the app and intermediary to show that the mandate is accepted and the funds are blocked. A screen saying “pending” is not the same as a completed application.

6. Confirm that the block was reported
Check the application status in the intermediary’s IPO section and the mandate status in the UPI app or bank account. The application is valid only when the mandate has been accepted and the amount has been reported as blocked. If the request is declined, expires or remains unresolved near the deadline, contact the intermediary promptly for re-initiation or correction.
7. Keep the records until allotment
Retain the application number, mandate reference, bid details and screenshots. Do not cancel the mandate merely because the money still appears in the account: a blocked amount is expected to remain visible. Monitor the issue’s official allotment and refund or release notices.
How the blocked amount is settled
| Allotment result | What happens to the block |
|---|---|
| Full allotment | The amount corresponding to all allotted shares is debited from the blocked funds and the shares are credited to the linked demat account, subject to the issue’s settlement schedule. |
| Partial allotment | Only the amount for the shares actually allotted is debited. The remainder of the block is released. |
| No allotment | The full blocked amount is released after the mandate ends or expires, according to the issue and bank processing schedule. |
| Invalid or unsuccessful application | If the bid is rejected because the mandate was not approved, funds were insufficient, details did not match or a deadline was missed, the bank does not complete the intended allotment; any block is released through the applicable process. |
Release is not necessarily instantaneous at the moment an allotment result appears. The live exchange notice, prospectus and your bank’s processing status determine the actual date. If an expected release has not appeared after the stated schedule, use the application number to raise a case with the intermediary and bank.
Deadlines and a typical issue timeline
IPO dates are issue-specific. The issue page and prospectus control, not a generic calendar. SEBI material commonly refers to 5:00 p.m. IST on the issue-closing date as the UPI mandate cut-off, but an issue can publish different operational timings or require the request to be initiated earlier. Submit the bid with enough time for the intermediary, sponsor bank and UPI app to process it.

- Before the published cut-off: Approve the mandate and verify that the amount is blocked. Do not wait for the last few minutes.
- After closing: Follow the published basis-of-allotment and debit or release dates.
- After allotment: Check the demat credit and bank ledger. Escalate a missing credit, debit or release with the application and mandate references.
What to do when the mandate is missing or fails
No mandate has arrived
- Recheck the exact UPI ID entered in the bid, including spelling and handle.
- Open the UPI app directly and inspect its mandate or pending-request area.
- Confirm that notifications are enabled and that the app and handle support IPO mandates.
- Check with the intermediary that the bid was actually uploaded and that the sponsor bank request was initiated.
- If the request expired, ask the intermediary to re-initiate it while the issue is still open.
Do not create a second application through an unrelated channel unless the intermediary explains how it will avoid duplicate bids and the issue rules permit the correction.
The UPI ID was wrong
NPCI guidance indicates that a request sent to a wrong ID may not start or may reach the wrong ID. Tell the original intermediary immediately, correct the application details through its prescribed process and request a fresh mandate. A request delivered to another person cannot be approved safely or reassigned by you.
The request expired or was not approved
An expired request is declined and must be re-initiated by the broker or other intermediary. If you simply leave a request pending until the cut-off, the bid may not qualify. Approval must be completed before the issue-specific deadline and the block must be reported.
Insufficient funds
The account needs the full bid amount when the sponsor bank attempts the block. Deposit the required funds before asking for re-initiation, and allow for any other holds or scheduled debits that could reduce the available balance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
PAN, DP ID or client-ID mismatch
Compare the bid with the PAN and depository records exactly. A mismatch can lead to rejection or prevent credit even when the UPI approval succeeded. Correct the record through the eligible intermediary before the issue closes; do not alter identity information in the UPI app as a substitute for correcting the bid.
Best Value
Bid or mandate submitted too late
Exchange systems may reject a bid or exclude it when the bid upload or mandate approval misses the issue-specific cut-off. A successful UPI payment screen after the deadline does not override the IPO timetable. Submit early enough to allow for app outages, bank latency and a possible re-initiation.
Limits and rules that change the decision
Retail ceiling
Current SEBI guidance limits a retail UPI IPO application to ₹5 lakh per transaction. The ceiling applies to the application transaction, not to a vague daily spending preference in the UPI app. If your intended application exceeds that threshold, use the applicable ASBA or SCSB route and investor category rules instead of trying to split one intended bid into unapproved workarounds.
Own-account requirement
The UPI ID and bank account must belong to the applicant named in the bid. A family member’s account, a friend’s UPI ID or another person’s mandate approval does not become valid merely because the money is available.
ASBA treatment
Funds stay in the account while blocked and continue to earn applicable interest. They are not available for another debit during the block, so maintain a buffer for regular payments and do not count the blocked balance as spendable cash.
Identity and demat consistency
The PAN, demat account and application record must describe the same investor. Check joint-account, minor, non-resident and other special-category requirements in the issue documents; the ordinary retail UPI workflow does not override those rules.
How to choose between eligible intermediaries
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the intermediary SEBI-eligible for the issue? | An unverified party may not be authorized to collect or upload an IPO bid. |
| Does your bank and UPI handle support public-issue mandates? | A normal UPI payment capability does not guarantee IPO mandate support. |
| Can you see a clear mandate and application status? | Readable statuses help distinguish a submitted bid from a blocked, pending or failed one. |
| Can it correct a wrong ID or re-initiate an expired request? | Time-sensitive recovery is important before the issue closes. |
| Does it provide grievance support and reference numbers? | You need a traceable escalation path if money remains blocked or a credit is missing. |
Choose the channel that gives you reliable status and recovery support, not merely the one with the shortest application form. Never approve a mandate received from an unsolicited message without matching it to the IPO you intentionally selected.
Security checks for every UPI IPO mandate
- Start from the intermediary’s verified website or app rather than a forwarded link.
- Match the issuer, amount and bank account shown in the mandate with your submitted bid.
- Enter the UPI PIN only on the official UPI application’s approval screen. No legitimate intermediary needs to know the PIN.
- Do not share one-time passwords, UPI PINs or screen-control access with support callers.
- Save the bid and mandate references, but redact sensitive account information if you send a screenshot for support.
- If a request is unfamiliar, decline it and contact the intermediary through its published support channel.
When your money should be available again
There is no single release hour that applies to every IPO. The bank releases the unused or entire block according to the mandate end, allotment processing and issue timetable. Full allotment leads to a debit for the allotted shares; partial allotment releases the unused portion; no allotment releases the full amount. Check the bank ledger as well as the intermediary status because an app may update before the bank posts the release.
Recommended Free Tools
If the published release date has passed and the amount is still blocked, provide the intermediary and bank with your PAN, application number, mandate reference, issue name and the date of approval. Keep the complaint number until the lien is removed and any allotted shares or refund is visible.
