ASBA blocks the application amount in your bank account instead of transferring it immediately. If shares are allotted, only the amount due is debited; the balance is unblocked. If you receive no allotment, the blocked amount is released and there is normally no separate refund transfer.
The live FPO’s offer document controls the opening and closing dates, price or price band, lot size, investor categories, bid rules, demat requirements and available submission channels. Confirm those details before entering a bid.

First confirm that the offer is a public FPO
An FPO is a public issue made by a company that is already listed. It is not automatically the same as a rights issue. A rights issue has separate eligibility rules and a separate Letter of Offer; for example, rights-issue ASBA provisions can depend on holding eligible shares on the record date. If the document you received is for a rights issue, follow that document’s rights-specific instructions rather than the public-FPO process below.
For a public FPO, use the current offer document and the official exchange or registrar information associated with that offer. Do not rely on an old announcement, a generic bank tutorial or an app screen from another issue.

What ASBA changes about the payment
Application Supported by Blocked Amount (ASBA) leaves the application money in your own bank account while a lien or block is placed on it. You cannot use the blocked portion during the allotment process, but it is not treated as an ordinary payment sent to the issuer at the time you bid. SEBI Investor guidance explains that the blocked funds continue to remain in the account and continue earning interest until the allotment and debit process.
- If shares are allotted, the amount corresponding to those shares is debited.
- If fewer shares are allotted than you applied for, the unused balance is unblocked.
- If no shares are allotted, the blocked amount is unblocked; a separate refund transfer is normally unnecessary under ASBA.
Entering a bid, authorizing the block, receiving an allotment and seeing shares credited to your demat account are separate events. A successfully submitted bid does not guarantee acceptance or allotment.
Check these items before you start
- Offer identity: Confirm the issuer, that the issue is a public FPO, and the exact offer dates in the current offer document.
- Price and quantity: Note the price or price band, minimum lot, bid multiples, maximum permitted quantity and any category-specific limits.
- Investor category: Select the category for which you qualify. The offer document states the categories and their rules.
- Demat details: Have the beneficiary account or demat information requested by the application flow, and enter it exactly.
- Account ownership: Use your own eligible bank account. For a UPI application, use your own UPI ID linked to that account.
- Channel availability: Verify that your SCSB bank or registered broker supports this particular FPO and your investor category.
- Funds: Keep the full application amount available for the block, including any amount required by the offer’s bid terms.
- Records: Make a note of the application reference, bid details and the date and time of submission.
Choose between bank ASBA and broker-submitted UPI ASBA
| Decision point | Bank ASBA | Broker or intermediary with UPI |
|---|---|---|
| Where you submit | Through an eligible SCSB bank’s branch or internet-banking process. | Through an eligible registered stockbroker or other permitted intermediary that supports the FPO. |
| How the block is authorized | By the bank’s ASBA authorization in its branch or online interface. | By approving a mandate request in your UPI application with your UPI PIN. |
| Account and identity | The application uses the eligible bank account and the demat details requested by the offer. | The bid includes your own UPI ID; third-party UPI IDs or bank accounts are not considered for allocation. |
| Availability | Depends on the bank being an eligible SCSB and on the offer’s instructions. | Depends on the broker or intermediary being eligible and enabled for that specific issue. |
| Universal speed or allotment advantage | Not established. | Not established. |
Neither route improves allotment odds merely because you used it. The correct choice is the channel that the offer permits and that you can authorize with matching account, demat and identity details.

1. Verify the SCSB route for the FPO
Read the offer document’s ASBA section and confirm that bank ASBA is available for your category. NSE’s ASBA procedure describes public-issue applications through SCSBs. Use the bank’s current branch or internet-banking instructions; menu names and form fields differ between banks and can change.
2. Open the bank’s application flow
Use the SCSB’s stated branch form or its official internet-banking route. Do not assume that a savings account at any bank qualifies: the account must be with an eligible SCSB and meet the issue’s conditions. If the bank asks you to select an issue, match the issuer and FPO dates exactly.

3. Enter the offer and applicant details
Provide the applicant name, PAN or other requested identity information, demat or beneficiary details, investor category, bid quantity and bid price exactly as shown in the offer document and your account records. Enter the lot multiple and price rules specified for that FPO rather than copying values from another issue.
4. Authorize the block
Review every field before submitting. Your authorization instructs the SCSB to block the application amount in the account. The money remains in that account while the basis of allotment is finalized; it is not an ordinary outward transfer to the issuer.

Record the application or reference number and retain the submitted details. If the bank provides a downloadable acknowledgement, keep it with the offer name and bid information. The reference is useful if you need to ask the bank or registrar about a missing or rejected application.
6. Monitor the account and official status
Watch for the block, any debit for allotted shares and release of the unused amount. Check allotment through the official channel identified for the FPO, such as the designated registrar or exchange information. A bank acknowledgement alone does not establish that shares were allotted.
How to apply through a broker using UPI
1. Confirm broker and issue eligibility
Before starting, check that the broker is a registered intermediary permitted for public-issue applications and that it supports this specific FPO. NSE lists registered stockbrokers among intermediary routes for UPI with ASBA. Support for one issue does not prove support for every issue or every investor category.

2. Start the FPO application in the broker’s flow
Select the exact FPO and enter the bid quantity, price, category and demat information required by the live offer document. The broker’s screen may use different labels from another app, so match the underlying field—not a familiar label—to the offer instructions.
3. Enter your own UPI ID
Provide the UPI ID linked to your own bank account. SEBI’s UPI guidance describes the intermediary uploading the bid and UPI ID for processing. Do not substitute a spouse’s, relative’s or friend’s UPI ID, even if that person offers to authorize the mandate; third-party account and UPI details are not considered for allocation.
4. Wait for and inspect the mandate request
The sponsor bank sends a UPI mandate request to the UPI application associated with the ID. Check that the request identifies the correct FPO, applicant and amount before approving it. If the request does not arrive, first check that the UPI ID was entered correctly and that notifications are enabled; then use the broker’s and bank’s official support paths rather than creating a second, conflicting application.
5. Approve with your UPI PIN
Authorize the mandate in your UPI application with your UPI PIN. The block occurs after the required authorization. Simply entering a bid in the broker app, without approving the mandate, does not complete the UPI-ASBA process.
6. Keep the acknowledgement and follow the outcome
Save the broker’s application acknowledgement and any mandate reference. After the basis of allotment, the allotted amount is debited and excess funds are unblocked. Check the official allotment result and later the demat account for credit; these are distinct stages.

UPI limit and account-ownership warning
SEBI’s Investor guidance page, accessed in 2026, states a limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction for UPI applications and describes that route as available only to retail individual investors. The page is IPO-focused, and current circulars or the specific FPO document may control the applicable rule. Treat ₹5 lakh per transaction as the cited SEBI guidance context, not as a substitute for checking the live offer. Verify the current limit, category and issue instructions before submitting.
The same guidance warns against third-party UPI IDs or bank accounts. The applicant, bank account, UPI ID and demat relationship must satisfy the issue’s rules. A mandate approved by someone else can therefore leave the application ineligible even if the bid appears in the broker interface.
What happens to your money after you apply?
- Bid entered: You submit quantity, price, category and account or UPI details.
- Authorization completed: The SCSB authorization or UPI mandate approval places the application amount on block.
- Allotment determined: The issuer and issue intermediaries finalize the basis of allotment under the offer’s rules.
- Allotted amount debited: Funds needed for the shares actually allotted are debited from the blocked amount.
- Surplus unblocked: The amount for unallotted shares, or the full amount when there is no allotment, is released back for use.
- Shares credited: Allotted shares are credited to the demat account through the issue’s settlement process.
ASBA is therefore not a promise that money will never leave the account. The debit occurs for the shares allotted; the distinction is that the money is blocked first and the final debit is made only after allocation.

When a bid, block or allotment appears to fail
The bid was entered but no block appears
For bank ASBA, confirm with the SCSB that the application was accepted and that sufficient unblocked funds were available. For UPI, check whether the mandate was actually approved; a broker screen showing a submitted bid is not the same as an authorized block. Keep the reference number and ask the relevant bank or intermediary to trace it.
The UPI mandate never arrived
Recheck the UPI ID for typing errors and confirm that it is linked to your own bank account. Look in the UPI application’s mandate or pending-request area, not only in push notifications. Do not approve a request whose issuer, amount or applicant details do not match the FPO. Escalate through the official broker, UPI app or bank support route if the offer’s deadline has not passed.
The application was rejected
Possible issue-specific causes include an ineligible category, incorrect demat or identity details, a third-party account or UPI ID, an invalid quantity or price, or failure to complete the required authorization. The exact reason must come from the bank, intermediary or registrar handling that FPO; do not infer it from a generic app message.

The amount remains blocked after allotment
Check the official allotment status first and compare it with the bank or UPI mandate record. If the amount should have been released but remains blocked, provide the application reference to the SCSB or bank and, where directed by the offer, to the registrar. Avoid submitting another application merely because the release is delayed; multiple channels do not increase allotment odds and can create avoidable mismatches.
No shares appear in the demat account
Confirm that you actually received an allotment and that the demat details in the application were correct. Shares are credited after allotment and settlement, which is separate from bid submission and block authorization. Use the official registrar or exchange contact listed for the FPO if the published allotment and your demat record do not agree.
Security and accuracy checklist
- Use only the current FPO document and official issue-status pages.
- Never share your UPI PIN, bank password or one-time authentication code with a broker, bank employee or caller.
- Approve a UPI mandate only after checking the issuer, applicant and amount.
- Do not use another person’s UPI ID or bank account.
- Match the applicant name, PAN, demat account and bank or UPI ownership details.
- Check the final bid quantity, price and category before authorization.
- Save the application and mandate references until the block is released and any allotted shares are credited.
- Do not treat an application acknowledgement, a block or a mandate approval as an allotment guarantee.
Which route should you use?
Choose bank ASBA when you have an eligible SCSB account and prefer to submit directly through the bank’s permitted branch or internet-banking process. Choose broker-submitted UPI ASBA when the broker is eligible for that FPO, your category is supported, and you can authorize a mandate from your own linked UPI account. In either case, verify the offer document first and use the route it permits.
There is no source-supported basis to call one route universally faster, more reliable or more likely to receive an allotment. The practical difference is submission and authorization: SCSB bank authorization versus an intermediary-uploaded bid followed by a UPI mandate.
