Indian citizens applying for a short visit to Switzerland generally need a Schengen visa. For tourism, visiting someone, or another short stay of up to 90 days, apply through the Swiss process if Switzerland is the main destination of the trip. Applicants in India submit through VFS Global for the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, using the location assigned to their residence. Choose the visa category and checklist that match your real purpose of travel.
1. Check that the Swiss short-stay visa is the right route
The short-stay Schengen route covers stays of up to 90 days. If your itinerary includes several Schengen countries, apply to the country that is your main destination under Schengen rules; Switzerland should be the principal destination for a Swiss application. Work, study, family reunification, and stays longer than 90 days follow separate requirements, so do not use a tourist checklist for those cases. See the Swiss Embassy’s visa procedure and jurisdiction information before proceeding.

For applicants resident in India, the application route is through VFS Global to the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi. The competent application location depends on residence. Check the current jurisdiction information before booking; Bhutan is listed under Austrian representation for Swiss Schengen applications.
2. Choose the checklist for your purpose
The Embassy publishes separate document lists for tourism, personal visits, business, and other purposes. Start with the checklist that describes your trip, then tailor the evidence to your own circumstances. The tourist checklist accessed here displays an October 2024 revision marker; confirm that it remains the current version on the Embassy visa page before relying on its detailed requirements.

3. Gather the tourist application documents
The following requirements are from the Embassy’s tourist checklist. It may request additional documents or a personal interview, so a complete checklist does not guarantee approval.
Passport, photo and application form
- Passport: A national passport issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least three months after your planned return, and with at least two blank pages. The checklist excludes handwritten passports and passports with observations on the biographical-data page.
- Photo: One recent passport-size photograph on a white background, 35–40 mm wide and taken within the last six months. Follow the checklist’s photo instructions.
- Form: A completed and signed visa application form.
Employment and financial evidence
- Employed applicants: An original employer letter on company letterhead, signed and stamped, stating your position, length of service, no objection to the trip, dates, and purpose. The checklist also asks for the last three months of payslips, matching salary-account statements, and Indian ITR-V or acknowledgement for the last two assessment years.
- Self-employed applicants or company owners: Business registration, GST documentation, or other proof of ownership; personal bank statements for the last three months; and ITR-V or acknowledgement for the last two assessment years.
- Retired applicants: Pension-account statements for three months and, where applicable, evidence of regular income from property or business.
Transport, accommodation and family documents
- Provide a flight reservation showing all travellers, applicable transport evidence within the Schengen area, and hotel or package-tour confirmations for Switzerland or other Schengen states.
- For children, follow the checklist’s additional-document rules, including notarized parental consent in specified travel situations.
- Where family members share applications and bookings, the checklist describes which documents may be supplied by the head of family. Confirm the details for your circumstances rather than assuming one family member’s evidence covers everyone.
Use the Embassy’s current visa instructions and purpose-specific checklist to confirm the required document order and any updates.

4. Arrange compliant travel medical insurance
The tourist checklist requires insurance covering the full Schengen stay, with at least EUR 30,000 for expenses connected with medical repatriation, urgent medical attention, or emergency hospital treatment. The Embassy’s approved Indian insurance list is effective January 2026 and includes company and policy age limits. Check that the exact policy and the applicant’s age qualify; an insurer’s name alone is not enough. See the Embassy’s insurance instructions and approved-company list.

5. Book, submit and provide biometrics if required
Submit through the authorized VFS Global route for the Embassy in New Delhi, following the location that handles applications for your residence. Personal appearance is generally required when fingerprints must be collected. The Embassy says fingerprints are generally collected every 59 months from applicants aged 12 and older. If they were recorded within the previous 59 months and the earlier visa is marked “VIS,” a repeat fingerprint visit may not be needed; inadequate prints or an interview request can still require attendance. Children under 12 do not provide fingerprints. Check the Embassy’s current procedure before your appointment.

6. Pay the fee and allow time for a decision
The India-specific Embassy fee table, effective 1 April 2026, lists these visa fees:
| Applicant | Fee listed for India |
|---|---|
| Adult | EUR 90 / INR 9,600 |
| Child aged 6–12 | EUR 45 / INR 4,800 |
The fee is payable when you submit the application and is not refunded if you withdraw or the visa is refused. The Embassy reserves the right to adjust the local-currency amount with exchange-rate fluctuations. Check the current fee table and any VFS service charges before attending.

The Embassy procedure page estimates 7–10 calendar days after submission at a VFS centre in India. It also says a consular decision is generally taken within 15 days and may take longer in individual cases; some nationalities can trigger consultation lasting up to 14 calendar days. These describe different stages or circumstances and are not a guaranteed delivery date. The Embassy recommends applying early and allows applications no earlier than six months before the planned trip. Its page was published on 19 January 2026; check the latest procedure information before planning travel.
