If YouTube stopped or removed your live stream for copyright, first check YouTube Studio to see whether you have a live interruption, a Content ID claim, a scheduled removal, or a completed copyright removal with a strike. The route for challenging a completed removal is a copyright counter notification—a legal request, not the same thing as appealing a Content ID claim. Submit one only if you have a good-faith, fact-based reason to believe the removal was mistaken or the material was misidentified.
First identify what YouTube did
The remedy depends on the notice and the status of the content. YouTube’s live-stream scans may detect third-party material, including another live broadcast. A warning and placeholder may appear first; if the material continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Check YouTube Studio for the specific notice and any strike or restriction. - Live interruption: The stream was interrupted or terminated, but the notice may not describe a completed removal. Check Studio before choosing a formal route.
- Content ID claim: This is a claim against content, not itself a copyright removal request. You may be able to dispute the claim and, if rejected, appeal it.
- Scheduled copyright removal: The removal has not taken effect yet. YouTube says the scheduled notice provides a seven-day action window; a counter notification is not available until the removal takes effect and a strike is applied.
- Completed copyright removal and strike: If you believe YouTube removed the content by mistake or misidentified it, the formal challenge is a counter notification.
YouTube says that when an active live stream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a copyright strike and live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. Confirm the strike and restriction in Studio rather than assuming the same status from the interruption alone. See YouTube Help: Copyright strikes.
Choose the right route
If the stream was interrupted
Review the copyright notice and stop or replace the material it identifies. If you have a license, contact the rights owner and ask them to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent a live interruption when the channel is not allowlisted. YouTube’s guidance is at Copyright issues with live streams.

If you received a Content ID claim
Use the claim’s dispute process if you have a factual basis to challenge it. If the dispute is rejected, YouTube may offer an appeal; the claimant then has seven days to respond to that appeal. A rejected appeal can lead the claimant to request a copyright removal. If YouTube considers that request valid, the content is removed and a strike is applied. A counter notification applies only after a removal has taken effect—not as a substitute for disputing or appealing an active Content ID claim. See YouTube Help: Dispute a Content ID claim.
If a removal is scheduled
Read the deadline and options in the notice promptly. YouTube says that, during the seven-day scheduled period, deleting the content can avoid the strike; deleting it after removal does not undo a strike already applied. You may also ask the claimant to retract the request. A counter notification cannot be filed until the removal is effective. See YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests.
If the removal and strike are already in effect
Consider a counter notification only if you can explain specifically why the removal was a mistake or misidentification. Examples may include owning the relevant rights, having permission, or believing a copyright exception such as fair use or fair dealing applies. Exceptions depend on the facts and applicable law; simply calling a use fair does not establish that it is. If your basis is uncertain, consider asking the claimant to retract the request or getting legal advice before making a legal submission.

How to submit a copyright counter notification
YouTube’s computer instructions use YouTube Studio. Interface labels can change, so follow the current prompts and confirm that the item is marked removed.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content, then filter for Copyright.
- Find the item marked Removed and open its copyright details.
- Choose the counter-notification action and complete the eligibility prompts.
- Provide your explanation, required contact information, legal agreements, and full legal-name signature, then submit.
YouTube requires a clear, concise explanation of why the removal was mistaken or the content was misidentified. Be accurate and specific: identify the material at issue and explain your basis, such as ownership or permission, rather than relying on a generic assertion. Understand the information you disclose
The submission requires contact details including your full legal name and physical address. YouTube says it shares the counter notification with the claimant. The original uploader can submit it, or an authorized representative, such as an attorney, can submit on the uploader’s behalf. If disclosure is a concern, consider whether an authorized representative is appropriate before submitting.

A counter notification is a legal request, not a routine support appeal. Do not include false information or submit one without a good-faith basis: YouTube warns that misuse may lead to account termination or other legal consequences. For a complex rights issue, a possible court or tribunal proceeding, or significant concerns about disclosure, seek advice from a qualified attorney familiar with the relevant jurisdiction.
What happens after submission
If YouTube finds the counter notification valid, it forwards it to the claimant. The claimant then has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. YouTube identifies examples such as a lawsuit, court order, Copyright Claims Board claim, or a determination of infringement from that Board. The content is not reinstated while qualifying legal action is pending. YouTube may resolve the associated strike while leaving the content down.

Other ways to resolve the strike
- Ask for retraction: Contact the claimant and ask them to retract the copyright removal request. Retraction is the claimant’s choice.
- Complete Copyright School and wait: YouTube says a strike can expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School. Expiration does not restore the removed video.
- Act during a scheduled removal window: Review the notice’s deadline and available options before removal takes effect. YouTube says deleting the content during the seven-day scheduled period can avoid the strike; deletion after removal does not clear an applied strike.

Keep future streams from being interrupted
Use material you own, have permission to use, or have carefully assessed under any applicable copyright exception. Keep licenses and permission records, and if a rights owner uses Content ID, ask them to allowlist your channel when appropriate. A license alone may not stop a live-stream match from interrupting a stream if the channel is not allowlisted.
