Start with the platform’s notice or in-app appeal option for the specific decision. Check whether it concerns a security lock, an account suspension, an individual post or video, or copyright; those situations can have different review routes. Save the notice and details of the affected content before submitting anything. An appeal requests a review—it does not guarantee reinstatement.
First, identify what was restricted and why
Open the notification, email, or account-status message associated with the action. Record the exact reason given, the account or item affected, the date, any stated deadline, and the appeal control or instructions shown. If the platform offers an in-app appeal for that decision, use it before looking for another route.

Do not treat every loss of access as a moderation suspension. A security lock or suspected account compromise calls for the platform’s security or account-recovery process. A policy suspension concerns the account itself; a content removal concerns a particular post, video, or other item. A copyright notice may have its own appeal or legal process.

- Account locked or possibly compromised: use the platform’s security and recovery route. An appeal about a policy decision may not restore access to a compromised account.
- Account suspended or disabled: follow the appeal instructions tied to the account decision.
- One item removed or restricted: appeal that specific item using its notice or the platform’s content-management tools.
- Copyright or intellectual-property claim: read the notice carefully; it may direct you to a distinct process with legal consequences.
Keep a copy of the notice and, where possible, the affected post’s URL, title, date, and other identifying details. Do not delete content that is under appeal unless the platform’s instructions require it.

Where to find the appeal route on each platform
| Platform | Decision type | Route described by the source | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| X | Account suspension | Log in to the suspended account, complete any prompts offered, then submit an appeal while logged in if the account remains locked. | X lists spam or fake accounts, suspected compromise, and abusive posts or behavior among possible suspension reasons. It does not promise an appeal will succeed. X: About suspended accounts |
| TikTok | Removed post | Open the removal notification in Inbox and tap “Submit an appeal,” or open the removed post, view its Community Guidelines violation details, and submit an appeal. | Do not delete the appealed post while review is pending; TikTok warns deletion may prevent restoration and may leave the violation on the account record even if the appeal is approved. TikTok: How to contact TikTok about removed posts |
| Disabled account | Log in and follow the on-screen appeal instructions. | For copyright removals, the notice contains the applicable appeal instructions; the route depends on whether the DMCA process applies. Facebook: Appeal a copyright removal | |
| Content removal | The Appeals Centre Europe’s March 2026 guide says to look for notices in notifications, Profile Status, or Account Status. | This is a route summary, not a complete current step-by-step procedure; labels and availability may vary. Use the notice and current in-app instructions. Appeals Centre Europe: DSA User Support Guide | |
| YouTube | Content restriction | In YouTube Studio, choose Content, find the video, and select “Appeal” in the restrictions column. | The cited guide summarizes the route; it does not establish a comprehensive set of deadlines for every location. For a channel or account termination, use YouTube’s termination instructions and the notice or email. Appeals Centre Europe: DSA User Support Guide · YouTube: Channel or account terminations |
Menu names and appeal availability can change. If the account remains accessible, check the current notice and account-status area for the decision-specific route rather than relying on an old screenshot or a generic form.
How to write a clear, relevant appeal
Use the official form or in-app flow and keep the explanation tied to the decision being reviewed. A concise, factual account is more useful than a general complaint about moderation.

- Identify the decision: give the username or account and identify the post, video, or other item, if applicable.
- Refer to the notice: quote or accurately summarize the stated rule or reason and include the date you received the notice.
- Explain the relevant facts: describe what happened and why the cited rule may not fit. If context was missed, explain that context specifically and briefly.
- Attach only what the form requests: provide relevant documentation through the official channel. Never send a password or login code.
- Keep a record: save the submitted explanation and any confirmation or case reference.
Do not claim evidence you cannot support, or send unrelated material that obscures the issue. No particular wording or format can guarantee a different decision.

Do not assume a copyright takedown uses the same route as a Community Guidelines or general policy appeal. Facebook distinguishes appeals for copyright reports outside DMCA procedures from DMCA counter-notifications where the DMCA notice-and-counter-notice process applies. The copyright notice contains the relevant instructions: follow those instructions and determine which process the notice invokes before responding. A DMCA counter-notification is legally significant, not a generic appeal form. If you are unsure about the consequences of making one, consider getting qualified legal advice. Can you take an appeal beyond the platform?
Facebook Oversight Board
Some Facebook content decisions may qualify for a further Oversight Board appeal after the platform’s own review process. Meta’s April 2021 announcement says users must first request a review and that not every decision is eligible. It is background rather than a current eligibility list, so check the decision notice and the Board’s current criteria before relying on this route. Meta’s Oversight Board announcement
EU out-of-court dispute resolution
For eligible users located in the EU, the Digital Services Act framework describes an internal platform appeal, a certified out-of-court dispute body, and a complaint to a national regulator. The Appeals Centre Europe says it accepts qualifying disputes involving named services including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, YouTube, and Google Maps. Its current service information says it reviews certain content removals and account suspensions, is free to users in the EU, and aims to decide within 90 calendar days, with extensions up to 180 days for complex disputes. These are the Centre’s service parameters, not a measure of appeal success. Its decisions are non-binding, and it cannot guarantee restoration; the platform makes the final decision. Check eligibility before submitting. The Centre lists exclusions including hacked or compromised accounts, impersonation decisions, copyright and other intellectual-property disputes, certain account-behavior and automated-spam decisions, age-related removals, identity-verification decisions, and users outside the EU. It says covered decisions against the user must be no more than six months old. Use the platform’s security-recovery process for a hacked account and the relevant copyright process for an intellectual-property claim. Appeals Centre Europe: scope and eligibility

Watch the account’s official inbox and the email associated with it for a response or request for information. Keep the confirmation and any follow-up correspondence. If the platform provides a review deadline or next step, use the timing and instructions in that notice; the available routes and timelines vary by decision and location.

Avoid paying an intermediary that claims it can bypass a platform’s review or guarantee reinstatement. The appeal routes described here are platform or eligible dispute processes, not a service that can promise an outcome.
