The most reliable way to analyze a wire or cable stock is to rebuild its economics at constant metal prices, then test whether quoted prices actually pass copper-cost changes through to customers. After that, separate volume and product mix from metal effects, examine backlog as a schedule of future cash receipts rather than a headline order number, and match debt maturities and acquisition funding against recurring free cash flow.
This approach prevents three common mistakes: treating copper inflation as organic growth, assuming a high backlog is automatically profitable, and calling leverage safe without checking when the debt must be repaid.

Why cable-company earnings need a special framework
Wire and cable producers often quote sales at the metal price prevailing when an order is invoiced. Copper, aluminum and sometimes lead can represent a large portion of the invoice, while the manufacturer’s conversion work, engineering, installation and warranty obligations generate the economic margin. A rise in copper can therefore lift reported revenue without improving the value created by the factory.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe reverse can also occur. If a producer buys metal before a price decline, inventory and contract timing can depress reported results even when underlying demand is healthy. Customer quotations may be fixed for a period, indexed with a lag, or negotiated in a highly competitive market. The analysis must therefore distinguish metal-price translation from conversion economics.

Step 1: Normalize metal prices before comparing companies
Current-metal-price sales versus standard-metal-price sales
Nexans reports both sales using current metal prices and sales using a standard metal price. Its 2025 standard copper assumption was €5,000 per tonne. Prysmian’s FY25 methodology held copper at €5,500 per tonne, aluminum at €1,500 per tonne and lead at €2,000 per tonne. Those reference prices are not interchangeable, so a reported margin comparison between the two companies is incomplete until the metal assumptions and accounting definitions are reconciled.
| Issuer and period | Standard metal assumptions | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Nexans, 2025 | Copper €5,000/t | Used to present sales and margin without the period’s copper-price translation. |
| Prysmian, FY25 methodology | Copper €5,500/t; aluminum €1,500/t; lead €2,000/t | Uses a different constant-price basket, so its standard-metal figures cannot be compared directly with Nexans without adjustment. |
A practical bridge starts with each issuer’s reported current-metal-price sales, subtracts the metal-price effect, and then checks the reconciliation for inventory revaluation, hedging and any disclosed core-exposure item. Keep the same metal assumptions across every period in your spreadsheet. Otherwise, a change in the reference price can look like operational growth or margin expansion.
Nexans example: the scale of the bridge
| Nexans 2025 metric | Reported amount | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Sales at current metal prices | €7,810 million | Includes the metal value translated at the prices prevailing under the company’s reporting method. |
| Sales at standard metal prices | €6,098 million | Better starting point for comparing underlying activity across periods. |
| Adjusted EBITDA | €728 million | Must be read with the standard-sales denominator and segment mix. |
| Adjusted EBITDA margin on standard sales | 11.9% | A constant-metal margin, not a guarantee that every product or future quarter earns this rate. |
| Core exposure effect | €24 million in 2025, versus €41 million in 2024 | Shows how copper variation can affect earnings even after the company’s standard-price presentation. |
| Free cash flow | €344 million | Use to test how much of EBITDA converted into cash after working capital, capital spending and other items. |
| Net debt at 31 December 2025 | €266 million | Year-end balance; do not substitute it for later-quarter leverage. |
The €1,712 million difference between Nexans’ current-metal-price sales and standard-metal-price sales is not automatically profit. It is primarily a metal-value presentation difference. The conversion margin, price pass-through, inventory timing and hedging determine how much of any metal move reaches EBITDA.
Step 2: Test pass-through and margin durability
Why copper and selling prices can diverge
Some contracts index the metal component quickly; others fix a quotation for weeks or months. In spot-like construction markets, competitors may cut or hold wire prices even as copper changes. Encore Wire’s risk disclosure states that “This competitive pricing market for wire does not always mirror changes in copper prices, making margins highly volatile.” That warning is central to any model based on a simple copper-price assumption.

When copper rises faster than customer prices, the producer temporarily absorbs the increase and conversion margin can compress. When copper falls, a producer holding higher-cost inventory can face an unfavorable timing effect; a producer with rapid pass-through may experience little economic impact. A model should therefore include the lag between metal purchase, quotation, shipment and invoice rather than applying the same copper sensitivity to every quarter.
Questions that establish margin quality
- Contract language: Is copper indexed, fixed, or renegotiated at milestones? Identify the reset date, reference exchange and any collars.
- Lag and exposure: How many days separate metal purchase and customer billing? Quantify the open position during that window.
- Hedging: Are futures or swaps used, and does hedge accounting move gains and losses through revenue, cost of sales or another line?
- Mix: What proportion comes from engineered, subsea or high-voltage projects versus standardized building wire?
- One-offs: Did a quarter benefit from inventory revaluation, a claim settlement, a plant start-up effect or a project milestone?
- Competitive behavior: Do quoted wire prices follow copper in the company’s main regions, or does market share pressure delay pass-through?
Use a margin bridge, not a single percentage
Start with adjusted EBITDA at standard metal prices. Then show the contribution from volume, product mix, conversion pricing, productivity, inflation, hedging and one-time items. A margin that rises because a high-margin transmission project shipped is different from a margin that rises because copper translation inflated the denominator. The bridge should reconcile to reported EBITDA and explain every material variance.
Step 3: Separate volume, mix and price
Measure organic growth after removing metal and foreign exchange
Nexans reported 2025 organic growth of 8.3%, or 11.6% excluding Other activities. Those percentages are more informative than current-metal-price revenue growth because they attempt to isolate operating demand. Still, check the company’s definition: organic growth can exclude acquisitions, disposals, foreign exchange and metal effects differently from another issuer.
Track shipped tonnes, conductor kilometres or project units where disclosed, then compare them with standard-price revenue. A rise in revenue with flat physical volume may reflect price or mix. A rise in volume with stable standard-price revenue can indicate weaker pricing or a shift toward lower-value products.

Identify project-driven quarters
Nexans reported 40.0% quarterly growth in PWR-Transmission in Q4 2025. Such a result can reflect the timing of large project deliveries rather than a new run rate for every quarter. Separate recurring low-voltage and building-wire demand from milestone-based high-voltage, subsea and grid work. Record plant utilization and bottlenecks because a full order book does not help if production slots, qualified labor or testing capacity are unavailable.
Step 4: Read backlog as a cash-flow schedule
Start with the contract details behind the headline
Nexans disclosed €7.9 billion of PWR-Transmission backlog in Q1 2026. Of that amount, €1.2 billion was tied to the Great Sea Interconnector, which was under rescheduling. The company said the broader PWR-Transmission backlog provides visibility toward 2028, while the rescheduled project was excluded from 2026 guidance.
| Backlog fact | What an analyst should test |
|---|---|
| €7.9bn PWR-Transmission backlog, Q1 2026 | Delivery years, customer funding, manufacturing slots, escalation clauses and expected cash-collection pattern. |
| €1.2bn linked to the Great Sea Interconnector | Rescheduling terms, cancellation rights, revised milestones and whether deposits or purchased materials are protected. |
| Visibility toward 2028 | Whether “visibility” means signed orders, framework awards, options or management’s internal forecast. |
For each disclosed order, build a schedule with customer, geography, product, contract value, expected shipment year, billing milestones, advance payments, escalation mechanism, cancellation or rescheduling rights and working-capital needs. A backlog dollar is not equivalent to cash. It may require substantial copper purchases before the first progress payment, and a project can be profitable on completion while consuming cash during construction.
Backlog-quality checklist
- Contracted versus awarded: Confirm whether the amount is legally binding or still subject to notice to proceed.
- Customer credit: Check the utility, developer or consortium’s ability to fund the project.
- Milestones: Map engineering approval, factory acceptance, shipment, installation and final acceptance.
- Escalation: Determine whether copper, labor and freight inflation can be passed through.
- Concentration: Flag a single customer or project that represents a material share of backlog.
- Conversion: Compare new orders, cancellations, rescheduling and revenue recognized each quarter.
Step 5: Analyze debt, acquisitions and financing capacity
Use a maturity ladder
Net debt divided by EBITDA is only a starting point. Build a schedule of bonds, term loans, revolvers, lease liabilities, acquisition bridges and committed capital expenditure. Then compare each maturity with expected free cash flow under a normal case and a stress case involving lower volumes, delayed projects or a copper-related working-capital build.

| Debt or leverage figure | Period and context | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| €266m net debt | Nexans, 31 December 2025 | Year-end snapshot after 2025 cash generation; reconcile to the company’s debt definition. |
| 0.36x leverage | Nexans, year-end 2025 | Low starting leverage, subject to subsequent acquisitions and seasonality. |
| 1.4x financial leverage | Nexans, H1 2026 | Shows the effect of later financing and operating timing; it is not comparable with the year-end figure without period alignment. |
| €910m Encore Wire term loan | Prysmian financing schedule, due 2029 | A specific refinancing or repayment date that belongs in the maturity ladder. |
| Revolving facilities | Prysmian schedule, due 2030 | Check drawn amount, undrawn commitment, covenants and renewal terms rather than treating all capacity as cash. |
Acquisitions can change the leverage story quickly
Nexans’ H1 2026 leverage was 1.4x after the Republic Wire acquisition, versus 0.36x at the end of 2025. That change illustrates why a low year-end ratio can be stale soon after an acquisition closes. Add purchase consideration, assumed debt, earn-outs, integration costs and expected synergies to the model. Use management’s pro forma EBITDA only after checking the timing and cost required to achieve it.
Cash-flow tests that matter
- Free-cash-flow conversion: Compare free cash flow with EBITDA over several years, not one favorable quarter.
- Interest coverage: Stress higher rates and delayed project receipts; include capitalized interest where relevant.
- Working capital: Model inventory and receivables when copper rises or customers demand larger performance bonds.
- Capex: Separate maintenance spending from new plants, subsea vessels, testing equipment and expansion projects.
- Covenants: Read definitions, permitted acquisitions, baskets and cure rights in the credit documents.
- Liquidity: Deduct restricted cash and commercial-paper reliance; identify committed undrawn facilities and their expiry.
Step 6: Compare wire and cable stocks on explicit axes
A useful comparison uses the same definitions for every issuer. Prysmian says its standard-metal prices are held constant over multiple periods to improve comparability, but its constants differ from Nexans’. Record the reference prices before ranking margins.
| Axis | What to measure | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-metal profitability | Adjusted EBITDA divided by standard-metal sales, with reconciliation items. | Is the margin earned after normalizing copper and other metals? |
| Organic growth | Growth excluding metal, foreign exchange and consolidation effects. | Are customers buying more product, or are invoices simply larger? |
| Backlog duration and conversion | Signed value, delivery years, cancellations and revenue recognized. | How much of the backlog can become sales and cash by each year? |
| Pass-through and hedging | Indexation clauses, lag, open metal exposure and hedge results. | Can a copper shock compress conversion margin? |
| End-market mix | Grid, transmission, subsea, construction, data centers and industrial demand. | Which markets support pricing and which are cyclical? |
| Capacity and capex | Utilization, expansion spending and commissioning schedule. | Can the company deliver orders without a cash-intensive bottleneck? |
| Cash generation | Free cash flow after working capital and growth capex. | Does accounting profit fund expansion and debt repayment? |
| Balance-sheet safety | Net leverage, interest coverage, liquidity and covenant headroom. | Can the company absorb a delayed project or acquisition integration? |
| Maturity concentration | Debt due by year and refinancing dependence. | Is a large repayment clustered in a weak cycle? |
A practical six-pass worksheet
- Collect the filing data. Record current-metal-price sales, standard-metal-price sales, adjusted EBITDA, free cash flow, net debt, segment growth, backlog and every disclosed metal assumption.
- Rebuild the metal bridge. Hold copper, aluminum and lead at each issuer’s stated constants, and reconcile current-price revenue to standard-price revenue, hedging and inventory effects.
- Build the margin bridge. Attribute the change in EBITDA to volume, mix, conversion pricing, productivity, inflation, hedging and one-time items.
- Schedule the orders. Allocate backlog by customer, project, geography and delivery year; mark rescheduled or option-based amounts separately from firm contracts.
- Stress the financing plan. Add acquisition debt, capex, working-capital needs and maturities, then test a case with lower volume, delayed milestones and higher interest expense.
- Rank only after normalization. Compare standard-metal margin, organic growth, backlog quality, cash conversion, end-market resilience and leverage using the same period and definitions.
Common analytical mistakes
Using reported revenue as demand
Current-metal-price revenue can rise because copper is more expensive. Use standard-metal revenue and physical volumes before concluding that the market expanded.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Comparing unlike standard prices
A Nexans margin built on €5,000 per tonne copper and a Prysmian margin built on €5,500 per tonne copper are not a clean head-to-head comparison. Recalculate or clearly label the difference.
Best Value
Treating backlog as guaranteed profit
Backlog can contain projects awaiting funding, subject to rescheduling or requiring significant cash before collection. Examine contract status and milestone economics.
Ignoring acquisition timing
A year-end leverage ratio can change materially when an acquisition closes in the next half-year. Use pro forma debt and EBITDA, then track actual integration spending.
Assuming copper pass-through is immediate
Encore Wire’s warning about competitive pricing shows why a copper rally can compress margins when selling prices lag. Model the lag explicitly.

Update the worksheet after every quarterly and annual filing, a material copper-price move, a major acquisition, a project rescheduling notice or a change in debt terms. Recheck standard-metal assumptions whenever an issuer changes its methodology. A backlog figure from one quarter and leverage from another can create a misleading picture if the periods are not aligned.
Bottom line
The strongest wire-and-cable analysis is not a ranking based on the highest reported margin or largest backlog. It is a normalized comparison that shows what each company earns at constant metal prices, how reliably it passes costs through, when orders convert to cash, and whether debt remains manageable while plants and acquisitions are funded. Only after those four questions are answered should valuation or stock selection enter the decision.
