What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To analyze a photo from your phone with a computer’s AI, make the image available as a file, open an image-capable model, attach or provide the image, and ask a specific question. The key choice is whether the model runs on the computer itself or on another device you connect to. In either case, treat the answer as an interpretation of the visible image—not proof of what an object is, where a photo was taken, or when it was captured.
What you need before asking AI about a phone photo
The AI application and model must support image input. A text-only chat model cannot inspect the photo’s pixels. Ollama’s desktop app supports sending images to compatible multimodal models, and LM Studio documents image input for vision-language models (VLMs): models designed to work with both text and images. See Ollama’s app documentation and LM Studio’s image-input documentation.

You also need a way for the computer or connected device to access the photo. The simplest general approach is to transfer or export it from the phone into a folder the computer can access. The transfer steps depend on your phone and computer; the model tools’ documentation establishes image-file input, not one universal transfer method.

- Make the photo available. Transfer or export the image to a computer-accessible folder, or use a supported linked-device setup. Open the image once to confirm you have the intended photo.
- Choose an image-capable app and model. Ollama’s macOS and Windows app can download and chat with supported models, including models that accept images. LM Studio’s image-input interface lets you provide a local image file to a VLM. Availability and model support can change, so check the current Ollama app information or LM Studio instructions.
- Attach the image. In Ollama, you can drag and drop an image into the chat; its documentation also describes providing an image path. In LM Studio, prepare a local image file and pass it to the VLM using the documented interface. The precise controls depend on the application.
- Ask one focused question. For example: “Describe the objects clearly visible in this photo,” “Read the large printed text and mark any uncertain words,” or “What visible differences are there between these two pictures?” A narrow question makes it easier to check the answer against the image.
- Check the answer against the photo. Zoom in to verify text, compare each claimed feature with what is actually visible, and ask for uncertainty where details are unclear. Do not rely on a model’s identification when a mistake could affect health, safety, or money.
Choose where the image will be processed
“Using your computer’s AI” can mean that inference—the model’s processing of your prompt and photo—takes place on that computer. It can also mean using a model hosted on another device that your computer or phone can reach. The distinction matters for setup, access, and privacy.

| Route | Where processing happens | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop model in Ollama or LM Studio | On the computer running the model, when configured for local inference | You want to attach a local image file and use a model on your computer | Image support, file formats, model availability, and that model’s hardware needs |
| Model on another linked device with LM Link | On the other connected machine that hosts the model | You want to access a model on another device, including from an iPhone | Network setup and where the image goes; LM Studio describes encrypted transfer through Tailscale |
LM Studio describes LM Link as a way to access models on another connected machine, with encrypted communication through Tailscale. That is a networked route, not processing wholly on the device holding the photo. Apple’s WWDC26 materials describe local Mac AI workflows using MLX, including image understanding and image attachments; see Apple’s WWDC26 session. These describe particular routes and tools, not a guarantee that every app disables networking or telemetry.
Formats and hardware depend on the tool and model
Supported image formats are not universal. LM Studio’s cited image-input documentation names JPEG, PNG, and WebP. Check the documentation for your chosen app and model before converting a file or troubleshooting an attachment.

Hardware requirements also vary by model. Ollama’s documentation for Llama 3.2 Vision lists minimum VRAM of 8 GB for the 11B version and 64 GB for the 90B version. Those figures apply to those model versions; they are not minimum requirements for every vision model. Consult the current model listing before downloading, and consider its resource requirements alongside your computer’s available hardware. See Ollama’s Llama 3.2 Vision information.

A model can offer a description of visible content, attempt to read text, or compare visible differences. Its answer is not guaranteed to be accurate. Small, blurred, angled, or obscured labels may be misread, and a plausible description can still be wrong. For text, ask it to flag unreadable or uncertain words and check every important character against the photo.

A picture alone does not establish an object’s identity, a person’s identity, authenticity, location, or capture date. Ask the model to point to visible evidence rather than infer beyond it, and independently verify consequential claims. Image-input documentation explains how to submit a picture; it does not guarantee the correctness of the model’s interpretation.

Privacy checks before you upload or link a photo
- If you use a model configured to run locally, confirm which computer performs inference. “Local” describes that processing path; it does not by itself establish that the application has no telemetry or that all network connections are disabled.
- If you use a linked-device service such as LM Link, account for the network path and the device that processes the image. LM Studio describes LM Link communication as encrypted through Tailscale, but that does not make it an on-device workflow.
- Before submitting a sensitive image, check the selected application’s settings and privacy documentation. Remove or avoid sharing material you do not want processed by that setup.
