How to Analyze an Indian IT Services Company’s Quarterly Results

A useful quarterly analysis answers five separate questions: Is revenue growing on a like-for-like basis? Are margins and profit improving for durable operating reasons? Is accounting profit turning into cash? What do delivery indicators say about future work? And is management meeting its own guidance? You can answer them reliably only after fixing the reporting basis, period, currency, units and assurance level.

The method below uses Infosys’s quarter ended June 30, 2026 and its audited FY26 results as examples of disclosure practice, not as a proxy for every Indian IT services issuer. Apply the same sequence to the company you are studying, keeping consolidated and standalone figures, reported and constant-currency measures, and recurring and exceptional items separate.

Start with the question the quarter can actually answer

A quarter is a short operating snapshot, not a complete investment case. Your objective is to establish what changed, why it changed, and whether the change is likely to persist. Separate evidence into five buckets:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Growth: revenue from operations, sequential growth and year-on-year growth.
  • Profitability: operating profit or the closest issuer-defined measure, margin, profit before tax and profit after tax.
  • Cash and financial position: cash generated from operations, working capital, debt, leases and investments.
  • Operating health: bookings or large-deal wins, utilization, attrition, headcount, client concentration, geography and industry mix where disclosed.
  • Execution: performance against management’s previous guidance and the assumptions attached to the next outlook.

Do not let a strong revenue number stand in for all five. A company can grow while margins contract, receivables rise, or guidance is cut. Conversely, a flat quarter can still be healthy if a temporary cost or currency effect masks stable demand and cash generation.

1. Establish exactly what is being reported

Before copying a number, write a one-line scope note containing the issuer, period end, currency, units, reporting basis and assurance status. This prevents the most common error: comparing figures that describe different things.

Record the reporting basis

  • Issuer and period: identify the legal company and the quarter-end date, not merely “Q1” or “June quarter.”
  • Currency and units: Indian issuers commonly present statements in ₹ crore, but some use ₹ million or ₹ lakh. Carry the unit beside every number in your worksheet.
  • Consolidated or standalone: consolidated statements include subsidiaries and describe the group; standalone statements show the parent entity. If subsidiaries materially contribute to revenue or profit, consolidated results are usually the operating picture, while standalone results help assess the parent’s own finances.
  • Audited, reviewed or unaudited: note whether the quarter has an audit opinion, a limited review or no external assurance.

Never add a consolidated revenue figure to a standalone profit figure. Use the same basis for every line in a comparison table. Infosys publishes both bases, and its FY26 filing provides segment information in the consolidated financial results.

Use a scope card

Field What to write Why it matters
Issuer Legal name and reporting entity A parent and a group may have different results.
Period Quarter ended date and comparison periods Seasonality and calendar differences can distort comparisons.
Basis Consolidated or standalone Determines which subsidiaries and transactions are included.
Units ₹ crore, ₹ million or another stated unit Prevents tenfold or hundredfold transcription errors.
Assurance Audited, reviewed or unaudited Indicates the level of external checking.
Accounting framework For example, Ind AS Changes in policy or estimates can affect comparability.

2. Read the audit opinion and accounting notes first

The headline release is not enough. Read the auditor’s or reviewer’s report, the basis of preparation and the notes before interpreting earnings. Look for the accounting framework, qualifications, emphasis or modified opinions, changes in estimates or policies, and material judgments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Infosys’s Q1 FY27 consolidated interim statements state that they were prepared under Ind AS and carry an unmodified audit opinion. That is a company-specific fact for that filing, not a presumption to apply to another issuer. An exchange-hosted filing for ADSL illustrates the opposite case: its statutory auditors issued a modified opinion and identified the matter underlying it. A modified opinion does not automatically make every number unusable, but it changes the questions you must ask and the weight you should place on reported profit or assets.

Questions to ask in the report

  • Is the opinion unmodified, qualified, adverse or a disclaimer?
  • Does the report identify a material uncertainty, going-concern issue or limitation on evidence?
  • Did the company change an accounting policy, estimate, useful life, impairment assumption or revenue-recognition judgment?
  • Are comparative figures restated, and is the reason explained?
  • Do the notes reconcile the face of the statement with segment, tax, lease, share-based-payment and related-party details?

Record the exact qualification and its affected line items. Do not silently treat a modified opinion as a routine footnote, and do not call an unmodified opinion a guarantee of business quality.

3. Build a like-for-like three-period table

Use the current quarter, immediately preceding quarter and same quarter a year earlier. The sequential comparison shows recent momentum and seasonality; the year-on-year comparison removes some seasonal noise. Use the statement’s own units and carry its EPS convention into your calculations.

Metric Current quarter Prior quarter Same quarter last year Sequential change Year-on-year change
Revenue from operations Enter reported value Enter reported value Enter reported value (Current ÷ prior) − 1 (Current ÷ year-ago) − 1
Operating profit or issuer measure Enter reported value Enter reported value Enter reported value (Current ÷ prior) − 1 (Current ÷ year-ago) − 1
Profit before tax Enter reported value Enter reported value Enter reported value (Current ÷ prior) − 1 (Current ÷ year-ago) − 1
Profit after tax Enter reported value Enter reported value Enter reported value (Current ÷ prior) − 1 (Current ÷ year-ago) − 1
Basic and diluted EPS Enter reported value Enter reported value Enter reported value Compare only on the same convention Compare only on the same convention

Calculate percentage changes from unrounded values where available, then present a sensible number of decimals. Mark whether each line is reported, company-defined or your own calculation. If a quarter contains a discontinued operation, acquisition, demerger or restatement, explain that before comparing it.

Check EPS annualization

EPS may be shown as a quarterly amount or annualized figure. Infosys explicitly notes that its Q1 FY27 quarterly EPS is not annualized for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Confirm the issuer’s note before comparing EPS with a full-year number or multiplying it by four. A non-annualized quarterly EPS should not be treated as a forecast of annual earnings.

4. Separate reported growth from currency effects

IT services companies often report rupee revenue while discussing growth in constant currency. These are different measures. Reported revenue includes the actual exchange rates used in the financial statements; constant-currency growth attempts to remove exchange-rate movement using the issuer’s stated methodology.

Use a two-line growth presentation

  1. State reported revenue and its sequential and year-on-year change.
  2. State constant-currency growth only with the issuer’s definition, period and reconciliation.
  3. Explain whether the difference reflects currency movement, hedging, geographic mix or another disclosed factor.
  4. Do not substitute constant-currency growth for reported revenue in profit, cash-flow or margin calculations.

The filings reviewed do not establish a single, cross-company constant-currency definition. One issuer may use average exchange rates, another may use a different baseline or exclude acquisitions. Before comparing two companies, verify that their definitions, periods and treatment of acquisitions are aligned. If a definition is not supplied, label the measure as management’s metric rather than presenting it as an industry-standard statistic.

5. Understand margins and explain their drivers

Start with the operating profit or operating-margin measure printed by the company. Do not impose your own industry definition if the issuer has not supplied one. Then read the management commentary and notes to determine what moved the margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a driver bridge

  • Wage increases: annual increments, hiring costs or changes in employee mix.
  • Utilization: the proportion of available delivery capacity deployed on billable work.
  • Subcontracting: a higher external-workforce cost can reduce margin even when revenue rises.
  • Pricing and rate realization: contract renewals, discounts and the mix of fixed-price and time-and-material work.
  • Service and geographic mix: consulting, cloud, managed services and lower- or higher-margin regions can change the blended result.
  • Foreign exchange: rupee movement and hedging can affect reported revenue and costs differently.
  • Restructuring or transition costs: identify whether the item is recurring, time-limited or classified as exceptional.

Separate what is reported from what is inferred. “Margin fell by 80 basis points” is a result. “The decline was caused by utilization” is an explanation that should be tied to management commentary or a note. If management names several factors without quantifying them, do not invent a numerical contribution.

Use margin mathematics carefully

Operating margin equals the issuer’s operating-profit measure divided by revenue from operations, expressed as a percentage. Check whether the numerator excludes stock compensation, restructuring, pass-through revenue or other items. A margin calculated from a different numerator is not directly comparable with the company’s headline margin.

6. Test profit quality instead of accepting headline PAT

Profit after tax can move for reasons unrelated to underlying delivery. Reconcile the quarter and year-to-date change through profit before tax, other income, tax, exceptional items, impairments, acquisitions, disposals and share-based compensation.

Classify each unusual item

Item What to check How to present it
Exceptional item Nature, amount, timing and whether it is legally or operationally recurring Show reported profit first; provide an adjusted view only with a clear calculation.
Other income Interest, investment gains, foreign-exchange gains or one-off receipts Do not treat financial income as operating delivery.
Impairment Asset affected, trigger and cash or non-cash character Explain the economic loss rather than deleting it automatically.
Tax movement Effective tax rate, deferred tax and discrete items Distinguish a tax-rate effect from operating improvement.
Acquisition or disposal Purchase accounting, integration costs and period included Keep organic and acquired growth separate where disclosed.
Share-based compensation Expense recognition and dilution Include the cost in reported earnings and discuss dilution separately.

Infosys’s audited FY26 results separately report a ₹1,289 crore labour-code exceptional item for the year. The same filing discusses other income and an impairment of customer-related intangible assets. Those disclosures do not justify simply removing every item from profit: present the reported result, identify the disclosed nature, and show any adjusted figure as an analytical view with the adjustment stated.

Reported versus adjusted: a safe format

  1. Quote reported profit after tax exactly as filed.
  2. Name each exceptional or unusual item and its tax treatment if disclosed.
  3. Explain whether the item affected cash, accounting profit, or both.
  4. If you calculate adjusted profit, show the formula and avoid implying that the adjusted figure is an official company measure.
  5. Use the same treatment in every comparison period.

7. Follow cash conversion and the balance sheet

Profit is an accrual measure; cash-flow from operations tests whether customers are paying and whether working capital is absorbing earnings. Compare cash generated from operations with net profit over several quarters or a full year, not one isolated period.

Inspect working-capital lines

  • Trade receivables: rising receivables can indicate collection timing or slower payment.
  • Contract assets and unbilled revenue: revenue recognized before invoicing may later convert to receivables or cash.
  • Deferred revenue and contract liabilities: customer advances can support cash before revenue recognition.
  • Payables and accrued expenses: a temporary increase can boost operating cash without improving underlying profitability.
  • Lease liabilities: distinguish lease-related cash commitments from conventional debt.

A single quarter may be distorted by billing calendars, annual bonuses, tax payments or large collections. Explain the period and direction of each movement, then seek confirmation in subsequent quarters. The reviewed filings provide the statements and notes, but they do not establish a ready-made cross-period cash-conversion statistic; calculate one only from comparable figures and label the formula.

Review financial resilience

Record cash and cash equivalents, liquid investments, borrowings, lease obligations, contingent liabilities and capital-allocation actions such as dividends or buybacks. A large cash balance is not automatically available for distribution if it is restricted, held in subsidiaries or needed for obligations. Likewise, low conventional debt does not mean low commitments when leases and long-term purchase obligations are material.

8. Read IT-services operating indicators in context

Operating metrics can explain what the financial statements may show only later, but they are not uniform across issuers. Use them as contextual evidence and preserve each company’s definition and period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Demand and backlog indicators

  • Large-deal wins or bookings: ask whether the value is total contract value, annualized contract value, bookings or revenue expected in a particular period.
  • Client concentration: identify dependence on major customers and whether growth is broad-based.
  • Industry and geographic mix: determine whether expansion comes from resilient or cyclical sectors and from which regions.

Delivery-capacity indicators

  • Utilization: check whether the measure includes trainees, subcontractors or only billable employees.
  • Attrition: note the time window, voluntary versus total attrition and whether the denominator changed.
  • Headcount: compare additions with revenue growth and utilization; a hiring surge can precede capacity needs but can also pressure margins.
  • Employee pyramid and skills: a shift toward senior specialists can raise cost while supporting complex work.

Do not imply that every company reports every metric. Management-selected indicators can be useful, but they are not audited financial outcomes and may change definition. Quote the issuer’s definition and period before drawing a trend.

9. Compare guidance with delivery

Guidance is management’s forward-looking view, not a reported result. At the start of your review, copy the previous revenue or margin outlook, its range, the assumptions and the stated risks. After the quarter, compare actual performance with that range.

  1. Record the original guidance date and period.
  2. Capture the range, currency basis, constant-currency definition and margin scope.
  3. List assumptions such as demand, foreign exchange, wage timing, utilization and large-deal conversion.
  4. Compare the quarter and year-to-date result with the guidance path, not merely the midpoint.
  5. If management changes the outlook, show the old and new ranges and quote the stated reasons in your own words.

A company can meet revenue guidance while missing margin guidance, or raise a margin outlook while demand indicators weaken. Analyze each target separately. Never present guidance as a forecast you created or as evidence that a share price will rise.

10. Compare two Indian IT services companies fairly

Cross-company analysis is valid only after you normalize reporting choices. Use a comparison table that keeps definitions visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis Company A Company B Normalization check
Revenue growth Reported and issuer-defined constant currency Reported and issuer-defined constant currency Same quarter, basis, currency and acquisition treatment
Operating margin Company’s stated measure Company’s stated measure Check exclusions and numerator definitions
Profit quality Exceptional items, other income, impairments Exceptional items, other income, impairments Apply the same reported-versus-adjusted logic
Cash conversion Operating cash flow versus profit over matched periods Operating cash flow versus profit over matched periods Account for working-capital seasonality
Demand and delivery Bookings, mix, utilization, attrition, headcount Bookings, mix, utilization, attrition, headcount Read definitions; metrics may not be equivalent
Guidance Prior outlook versus actual Prior outlook versus actual Compare ranges, dates and assumptions

A higher growth rate alone does not establish stronger performance. Weigh growth against margin direction, cash conversion, customer concentration, accounting adjustments and guidance credibility. If one company does not disclose a comparable metric, write “not stated” rather than estimating it.

11. Use a repeatable quarterly worksheet

Save the following checklist with each results release. It creates an audit trail for your conclusion and makes the next quarter comparable.

  1. Write the issuer, quarter-end date, reporting basis, units, currency and assurance status.
  2. Download the financial statements, auditor or reviewer report, notes and management commentary.
  3. Enter current, prior-quarter and year-ago revenue, operating profit measure, profit before tax, profit after tax and EPS.
  4. Calculate sequential and year-on-year changes, checking whether EPS is annualized.
  5. Record reported revenue growth and any constant-currency measure with its definition.
  6. Calculate or copy operating margin and list each disclosed driver.
  7. Reconcile profit through other income, tax, exceptional items, impairments, acquisitions and share-based compensation.
  8. Compare operating cash flow with net profit and inspect receivables, contract assets, deferred revenue, debt, leases and investments.
  9. Capture operating indicators and write their definitions and periods beside them.
  10. Compare actual results with the guidance that existed before the quarter.
  11. Write separate findings for growth, profitability, cash, operations and risks.
  12. State what future evidence would change your assessment.

12. Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mixing consolidated and standalone data

Symptom: revenue comes from the group statement while profit or EPS comes from the parent. Correction: rebuild the table on one basis; use the other basis in a separately labeled parent-company section.

Comparing unlike periods

Symptom: a June quarter is compared with a full year or a quarter with a different fiscal calendar. Correction: match quarter length, period end and fiscal year, then explain any restatement.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Treating constant currency as reported growth

Symptom: a company’s currency-adjusted percentage is used to calculate rupee profit or cash growth. Correction: keep reported and constant-currency columns separate and preserve the issuer’s definition.

Erasing exceptional items

Symptom: adjusted profit is presented as if it were the filed result. Correction: show reported profit first, identify the item, and label any adjustment as your own analytical calculation.

Calling one quarter’s cash ratio definitive

Symptom: weak cash conversion is declared from a single collection-heavy or payment-heavy quarter. Correction: inspect several periods and explain working-capital timing.

Using management metrics without definitions

Symptom: “bookings,” “utilization” or “attrition” is compared across companies as though standardized. Correction: copy each issuer’s definition and mark non-comparable measures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inferring valuation or share-price performance

Symptom: operating results are turned into a price target or recommendation. Correction: stop at the operational conclusion unless you are conducting a separate, fully supported valuation analysis.

13. Write the final assessment in a balanced form

End with five short findings rather than one impressionistic verdict:

  • Growth: state reported and, separately, issuer-defined constant-currency direction, including whether growth was broad-based.
  • Profitability: state margin movement and the disclosed drivers, distinguishing recurring from temporary effects.
  • Profit quality: identify exceptional items, other income, impairments and tax effects.
  • Cash and balance sheet: describe operating cash flow, working-capital movements, liquidity and obligations over an appropriate period.
  • Forward evidence and risks: compare guidance with delivery and name the next indicators that would confirm or weaken the assessment.

For example, an evidence-based conclusion might say that revenue improved but margin narrowed because of disclosed wage and utilization effects; reported profit included a separately identified exceptional charge; cash conversion requires another period because collections moved working capital; and guidance was maintained or changed for stated reasons. This is more informative than calling the quarter simply “good” or “bad.”
