To alternate Hindi and English gaming VODs in OBS, add them to one VLC Video source in the order you want them played—Hindi 1, English 1, Hindi 2, English 2—and leave Shuffle Playlist off. Install VLC first; if you want the sequence to repeat, enable Loop Playlist.
What you need before building the playlist
- OBS Studio and VLC installed. OBS’s built-in VLC Video source requires VLC, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation (January 11, 2022) covers the source requirements and settings.
- The Hindi and English gaming VOD files you want to play, saved locally and accessible to the computer running OBS.
- A YouTube stream key if you plan to broadcast the output live. Keep it private; anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel.
OBS does not automatically detect a video’s language or alternate languages for you. You create the alternation by placing the files in the desired sequence and keeping shuffle disabled.

Build an ordered Hindi-English playlist in OBS
- Install the matching VLC version. Install VLC before opening or configuring the VLC Video source. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- Open the scene for your broadcast. In OBS, use the Sources dock to add a source. Choose VLC Video rather than Media Source; Media Source is for a single local file, while VLC Video supports a playlist. OBS describes it as a playlist similar to an Image Slideshow in its Media Sources documentation.
- Add the VODs in playback order. In the VLC Video source’s playlist controls, add the files in the exact order you want. For example: Hindi VOD 1 → English VOD 1 → Hindi VOD 2 → English VOD 2. Reorder the entries if needed; the list order determines playback when shuffle is off.
- Set shuffle and looping deliberately. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for predictable Hindi-English alternation. Turn Loop Playlist on if the sequence should begin again after its final VOD; turn it off if the stream should end after the last item.
- Check visibility behavior. OBS documents options that determine whether the playlist continues, pauses, or stops when its source is not visible. The documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible. If you switch scenes or hide the source, check this setting so playback behaves as intended.
- Position overlays and other sources. OBS layers sources according to their position in the Sources list. Place overlays above the VLC Video source if they should appear over the VOD.
- Test before going live. Start a short recording or test stream. Confirm the order, language changes, audio levels, overlays, and scene layout. OBS’s Quick Start Guide (August 25, 2021) recommends running a short test instead of jumping straight into a first stream.
Settings and source choices that affect playback
VLC Video versus Media Source
Use VLC Video for a multi-file sequence. A regular Media Source handles one media file at a time; its Loop control repeats that individual file, not a playlist of alternating VODs. OBS lists supported media formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for video, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for audio. Format support does not guarantee every file will play correctly, so test your actual VODs.

The OBS forum lists Media Playlist Source 0.1.3, a separately maintained plugin with features such as editing a playlist without restarting playback, choosing files or folders, shuffle, and a current-file display. Its listing also notes that it does not provide audio-track or subtitle selection and has a folder-refresh caveat. The listing says versions from 0.1.0 onward require at least OBS 31. Check current compatibility and plugin details before installing; the built-in VLC Video source is the simpler documented choice for a static, ordered playlist. Check rights and YouTube requirements separately
Getting a VOD to play through OBS only establishes that the technical setup works; it does not establish permission to rebroadcast it, keep a resulting archive, or monetize the stream. Before broadcasting, check that you have the necessary rights for the gameplay footage, game audio, music, overlays, and any other included material, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies. Rules can depend on the game publisher, the content, and how you use it. The OBS documentation cited here explains playback setup, not YouTube policy or rights clearance.
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then restart OBS. Confirm VLC and OBS have matching architecture; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- VODs play in the wrong order: Reorder the files in the VLC Video playlist and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off.
- The playlist stops after its last file: Enable Loop Playlist if you want it to restart. If looping is off, ending after the final item is expected.
- Playback stops after changing scenes or hiding the source: Check the VLC Video source’s visibility behavior. OBS’s documented default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible.
- An overlay disappears behind the video: Move the overlay above the VLC Video source in the Sources list.
- A file will not play or its audio is missing: Test that file locally and in a short OBS recording. Confirm the file is accessible and supported, and check the source and OBS audio settings. The format list is not a guarantee that every file or track configuration will work.
- The stream does not appear on YouTube: Check that OBS is configured with the intended YouTube stream key and that your broadcast is started in the expected scene. Never share the stream key publicly.
