A single object usually aligns to its page or parent; a multi-selection aligns the objects to one another or to their parent context. Distribution creates even gaps, while layer order controls which object appears in front.
Start with the reference point
Alignment is always relative to something. Before clicking an icon, identify the reference:
- Page or parent: Use this for one selected object when you want it centered, left-aligned, or positioned against the boundaries of a frame, artboard, or page.
- Other selected objects: Use this for a multi-selection when you want their edges or centers to line up.
- Selection bounds: Some commands use the outer bounds of the current selection, so an object may align to the selection rather than the entire page.
Canva explicitly separates “Align to page” from “Align elements,” while Figma documents single-selection alignment to a parent and multi-layer alignment relative to the selection or parent context. See Canva’s alignment guidance and Figma’s alignment and position documentation.
A reliable alignment workflow
- Select the layer or layers. Click one object for page or parent alignment. For several objects, use Shift-click where supported. Canva documents Shift-click; Adobe Express documents Shift-click on Windows and Command-click on macOS.
- Choose the parent or page deliberately. If one object is selected, check whether the command says page, frame, artboard, or parent. In Canva, open Position and choose the page-alignment controls when that is the intended reference.
- Pick an axis. Horizontal commands include left, center, and right. Vertical commands include top, middle, and bottom. A center command aligns the relevant center lines; it does not necessarily make objects the same size.
- Check the result at the correct level. A child inside a frame may align to that frame rather than the document page. If the result is unexpected, inspect the parent, group, or frame before trying another command.
Aligning one object
For a single logo, card, or text block, alignment normally changes its position inside its parent. Centering horizontally and vertically is useful for a title card or an icon inside a button. It does not change the object’s dimensions or its stacking order.

Aligning several objects
With multiple layers selected, an edge command usually moves the selected objects so their corresponding edges share a line. Center commands line up their centers. The editor may use the selection’s outermost edge or a parent boundary as the anchor, so confirm the active reference label when available.
Distribute objects for even spacing
Alignment makes edges or centers line up; distribution makes the gaps between objects even. Select at least three repeated objects, then choose horizontal or vertical distribution.
In Figma, distribution retains the positions of the outermost selected layers and adjusts the layers between them. This means the first and last objects define the span, while the intervening gaps become equal. It is different from manually entering identical X or Y values because object widths or heights may differ.
When to use tidy-up instead
Figma’s Tidy up command does more than equalize one-dimensional spacing. It can arrange a selection into rows, columns, or a two-dimensional grid. For a grid selection, Figma places the arrangement relative to the selection’s top-left and applies additional layout logic. Use distribution when the outer objects and one axis are already correct; use tidy-up when you need the editor to form a structured row, column, or grid.
Spacing checklist
- Use horizontal distribution for cards in a row and vertical distribution for a list.
- Include only the objects that should share spacing; a stray layer changes the span.
- Account for different object widths, text wrapping, and hidden layers.
- After distributing, inspect the outermost objects to ensure they stayed where intended.
Arrange layers by changing stack order
Position and stacking are separate operations. X/Y coordinates say where an object is; stack order says which object is painted on top when their areas overlap. Figma summarizes this relationship in its Layers 101 guidance: “The layer order determines how layers overlap in the canvas.” The top item in the Layers panel is in front of items below it.

Use the Layers panel
Open the editor’s Layers panel, locate the object, and drag it up to bring it forward or down to send it backward. This is more precise than repeatedly clicking a canvas object when several layers overlap. Rename layers first if the panel is crowded.
Use forward and back commands
Most editors provide commands equivalent to:
- Bring forward: Move one step toward the front.
- Bring to front: Move above all sibling layers.
- Send backward: Move one step toward the back.
- Send to back: Move below all sibling layers.
Canva exposes Forward, Backward, To front, and To back through Position. Adobe Express provides equivalent context-menu commands as well as drag reordering in its Layers panel. Microsoft documents similar arrange concepts in its Align or arrange objects help.
Layer order is not always position-independent
In ordinary Figma frames outside auto layout, changing layer order does not change an object’s X/Y position. Auto layout is a documented exception: reordering layers also changes their position and order within the frame because the layout algorithm follows the item sequence. If an object moves after you reorder it, check whether its parent uses auto layout.

Figma
- Select a layer or multiple layers on the canvas or in the Layers panel.
- Use the alignment controls in the right sidebar for left, horizontal center, right, top, vertical center, or bottom alignment.
- For repeated objects, choose horizontal or vertical distribution. The outermost selected layers remain in place.
- Use Tidy up when you need rows, columns, or a grid rather than only equal gaps.
- Drag layers in the Layers panel or use the bring-forward/send-back commands to change overlap.
Figma lists application-specific shortcuts, including Alt+A for align left and Alt+W for align top. Shortcuts can vary by operating system, keyboard layout, or a changed interface, so verify the current shortcut list in your Figma installation before standardizing it in a team guide.
Canva
- Select an element, or Shift-click to select several.
- Choose Position in the toolbar.
- For one object, use Align to page when the page boundary is the reference.
- For a multi-selection, use Align elements to line the selected objects up.
- Use the layer controls for Forward, Backward, To front, or To back.
Grouping can make a set behave as one object, but group-level alignment is different from aligning each child. Enter the group or ungroup it when individual edges must line up.

Adobe Express
- Select an object. Use Shift-click on Windows or Command-click on macOS to add layers to the selection.
- Open the Layers panel from the right-side panel.
- Drag a layer up or down to change its order, or open its context menu for front/back commands.
- Use the layer options to lock an object that should not move while you edit nearby elements.
Locking is especially useful for backgrounds, guides, and finished branding elements. Unlock only when you need to reposition or restyle them. Adobe’s current layer instructions are available in its Adobe Express help article, updated March 25, 2026.

Why the result looks wrong
The object aligned to the wrong boundary
You may have aligned to a frame, group, or parent instead of the page. Select the parent and inspect its bounds, or move the object to the intended container before repeating the command.
Only some objects moved
Check the selection in the Layers panel. Hidden, locked, or nested layers may not be included. A mixed selection of children and their parent can also produce a result different from selecting siblings only.
Distribution produced uneven-looking gaps
Mathematical spacing is measured between bounding boxes, not necessarily between visible pixels. Transparent padding, shadows, different widths, and text boxes can make equal box gaps appear unequal. Crop or resize the assets, or distribute based on a consistent container.
Reordering moved an object
In Figma, inspect the parent for auto layout. Reordering in auto layout changes the item sequence and therefore its position; this is expected behavior rather than a failed alignment command.

The front/back command did nothing
Confirm that the selected layers overlap and share the same relevant parent. A layer cannot cover an object in a different isolated frame simply because it is higher in the document’s global list. Also check whether the layer is locked or whether another object is intercepting canvas clicks.

- Work from containers outward: Align the frame or artboard first, then its children.
- Use names and groups: Clear layer names make selection and reordering safer.
- Lock finished structure: Lock backgrounds and guides before fine-tuning foreground objects.
- Separate geometry from appearance: Shadows and strokes affect perceived edges even when the underlying bounds are aligned.
- Inspect at 100% and at final size: A one-pixel difference can be invisible when zoomed out but obvious in an export.
- Check layout mode before reordering: Auto layout, grids, and responsive containers may impose their own rules.

Only if each group should be treated as one item. Grouping hides the children from the distribution operation, so ungroup when individual elements need equal spacing.

What is the fastest way to find an overlapping object?
Use the Layers panel, select the named layer there, and move it temporarily or change its order. This avoids repeatedly clicking through stacked canvas objects.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I align objects from different frames?
Usually not as a single sibling set. Move them into a common parent or align each frame’s contents to a shared container first; the exact behavior depends on the editor.
Why do equal gaps look unequal around text?
Text boxes often include transparent or unused space, and glyph shapes do not fill their boxes. Distribute the containers, then adjust padding or text-box dimensions if visual rather than geometric spacing is required.
