How to Adjust Your Portfolio Records After a Stock Split

For a routine U.S. forward split in which every new share is identical to the old shares, multiply each tax lot’s share count by the split ratio, leave that lot’s total adjusted basis unchanged, and divide the unchanged basis by the new share count. The split itself generally is not taxable, but accurate lot records are essential when you eventually sell.

What a stock split changes in your records

A stock split changes the number of shares you own and the basis assigned to each share; it does not, in the ordinary identical-share case, change the total adjusted basis of each tax lot. A 2-for-1 split turns 100 shares into 200 shares. The purchase history and total basis attached to those shares stay with the lot, while the basis per share is cut in half.

This article addresses an ordinary forward split of identical common shares for a U.S. individual investor. It does not establish the tax treatment for a reverse split, a cash payment for a fractional share, a distribution of nonidentical stock, a merger, spin-off, exchange offer, or another unusual corporate action. Those events can require different calculations.

Record Before a 2-for-1 split After a 2-for-1 split
Shares in the lot 100 200
Total adjusted basis $1,500 $1,500
Basis per share $15.00 $7.50
Acquisition date Remains the original date Remains attached to the lot

The $15-to-$7.50 example follows the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) illustration for a 2-for-1 split. Your own calculation should use the adjusted basis of each lot, not a current market quote.

The formula for an ordinary forward split

Record the split as a ratio such as 2-for-1 or 3-for-1. The first number is the number of post-split shares received for each old share; the second is the number of old shares surrendered.

  1. Post-split shares: pre-split shares × (new shares ÷ old shares).
  2. Post-split total basis: the pre-split adjusted basis of that lot.
  3. Post-split basis per share: post-split total basis ÷ post-split shares.

Keep more decimal places in your own ledger than a brokerage display may show. Rounding each share individually can create a mismatch when the lot is sold; the lot-level total is the controlling reconciliation figure in your records.

Worked calculations

2-for-1 split

You bought 100 shares for $15 per share, so the lot’s adjusted basis is $1,500. A 2-for-1 split creates 200 shares. The lot remains tied to $1,500 of basis, producing a $7.50 per-share basis.

3-for-1 split

Suppose a lot contains 12 shares with a total adjusted basis of $600 before a 3-for-1 split. Multiply 12 by 3 to obtain 36 shares. Divide $600 by 36: the post-split basis is $16.666666… per share, commonly displayed as $16.67. Preserve the unrounded amount or enough precision to make the lot total reconcile to $600.

Several lots bought at different prices

Do not combine lots merely because they are the same security. Assume you bought 40 shares for $20 each (a $800 basis) and later 60 shares for $30 each (a $1,800 basis). After a 2-for-1 split, the first lot is 80 shares at $10 per share and the second is 120 shares at $15 per share. Their acquisition dates, holding periods, and total bases remain distinct.

Lot Pre-split shares Pre-split total basis Post-split shares Post-split basis per share
A 40 $800 80 $10.00
B 60 $1,800 120 $15.00

Adjusted basis is more than the original purchase price

Use adjusted basis, not necessarily the amount on the original trade confirmation. Adjustments can include reinvested dividends, return-of-capital changes, transaction costs, and other events recorded in your tax history. If you have multiple adjustments, apply the split to the resulting lot basis after those adjustments have been accounted for.

Step-by-step reconciliation workflow

1. Collect the event documents

Save the issuer’s split announcement or corporate-action notice and the brokerage statement or transaction confirmation showing the event. The notice should identify the effective date and ratio. Keep these documents with the affected security’s transaction history.

2. Enter the effective date and ratio

Add a non-sale corporate-action entry to your ledger for the effective date. Write the ratio exactly as stated, such as “3-for-1 forward split.” Do not record the additional shares as a purchase with a new acquisition date or a zero-dollar cost.

3. Build a pre-split lot list

For every affected lot, capture the original acquisition date, pre-split quantity, total adjusted basis, per-share basis, and holding-period status. Include shares acquired through dividend reinvestment; those reinvestments generally have their own dates and cost information.

4. Multiply each lot’s quantity

Apply the ratio independently to each lot. In a 3-for-1 split, 25 shares become 75; in a 5-for-4 split, 100 shares become 125. If your arithmetic produces a fraction, stop and verify whether the event is actually an ordinary split or includes a separate cash-in-lieu provision.

5. Carry the lot basis forward

Copy the pre-split adjusted basis to the post-split lot. The split is a reallocation across more shares, not a new investment entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Recalculate the per-share figure

Divide each lot’s carried-forward basis by its new share count. Keep the original acquisition date and any lot identifier. Your ledger should show both the total and per-share amounts.

7. Compare with the broker’s records

After the broker posts the event, compare its ending quantity, acquisition dates, lot quantities, total basis, and per-share basis with your worksheet. A statement may display rounded per-share figures, so compare the underlying lot total where available.

8. Resolve discrepancies promptly

Ask the broker for the basis history or corporate-action adjustment details when a lot is missing, duplicated, assigned the wrong date, or given an implausible basis. Retain the response and your calculation. If the broker cannot reconstruct an older lot, use purchase confirmations, prior statements, dividend-reinvestment records, issuer records, and other contemporaneous evidence.

Why separate tax lots matter when you sell

A split does not erase the choices and dates that determine gain, loss, and holding period. When you later sell only some shares, the selected lots determine which basis is used. A lot bought earlier may qualify for long-term treatment while a later lot does not, subject to the applicable holding-period rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the following attached to every lot:

  • Original acquisition date and settlement or trade details available from your records.
  • Number of shares before and after the split.
  • Total adjusted basis and the calculation used to derive per-share basis.
  • Dividend-reinvestment purchases and their individual dates and amounts.
  • Any prior basis adjustments, including reinvested distributions or return-of-capital entries.
  • The issuer notice and broker confirmation for the split.

Do not average the basis of separately acquired lots unless your tax method and account records specifically permit that treatment. A single average number can hide different holding periods and produce the wrong result for a partial sale.

Tax treatment in the United States

Under the IRS treatment described for an ordinary split of identical shares, receiving the additional shares is generally not itself taxable income. The income event generally occurs when shares are sold, at which point proceeds are compared with the basis of the shares and lots sold. The split still matters because it changes the basis allocated to every share and therefore the gain or loss calculation later.

This conclusion is limited to the ordinary forward-split facts described above. A reverse split, fractional-share cash payment, nonidentical stock distribution, merger, spin-off, or other corporate action can have different consequences. Read the issuer’s notice and the broker’s confirmation before applying the formula.

Covered and noncovered securities

For covered securities, brokers generally report acquisition date, holding-period classification, basis, and other information on Form 1099-B. The IRS generally treats stock acquired after 2010 as covered, with different effective dates for mutual funds and other regulated investment companies and for shares acquired through dividend-reinvestment plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older noncovered shares may not have been subject to the same broker basis-reporting requirement. Your broker’s display can therefore be incomplete even when the account history is correct. A Form 1099-B is useful evidence, but it does not eliminate your responsibility to maintain the records needed to support the basis reported on your tax return.

Situation What to do
Covered lot with complete broker history Reconcile the broker’s post-split quantity and basis against your own lot calculation; retain the source documents.
Noncovered or very old lot Reconstruct basis from confirmations, statements, reinvestment records, issuer information, and other reliable records.
Broker shows a basis but omits an adjustment Identify the missing adjustment, ask the broker for its history, and maintain your independent calculation.

Using brokerage statements correctly

Investor.gov explains that brokerage statements can show purchase and sale dates and prices, deposits and withdrawals, dividends and reinvested dividends, realized gains or losses, transaction costs, and basis information. Use the statement as a reconciliation aid, not as the sole source of truth.

Compare the statement with confirmations and your own transaction log, especially after reinvestments, transfers between accounts, inherited holdings, return-of-capital distributions, or earlier corporate actions. Download statements while they remain available and keep them in a durable format.

When the ordinary split formula does not fit

Reverse splits

A reverse split reduces the share count rather than increasing it. Fractional shares are often created, and the issuer or broker may pay cash for those fractions. Because that cash can represent a separate disposition, do not simply divide the old basis by the new whole-share count without reviewing the event terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cash in lieu of a fractional share

If the event produces a fraction and your account receives cash instead, identify how the broker allocated basis and reported the transaction. The cash payment may require a gain or loss calculation separate from the continuing shares. The basic forward-split rule alone does not settle that calculation.

Nonidentical stock distributions

A distribution of shares that are not identical to the original holding can require basis allocation between properties. Do not assume that all basis remains with the original lot or that the new shares have zero basis.

Other corporate actions

Mergers, spin-offs, exchanges, tender offers, reorganizations, and symbol or entity changes may involve allocation formulas, holding-period rules, or taxable components that differ from a split. Follow the issuer’s tax statement and the broker’s event details; obtain professional advice for a material or unresolved position.

Troubleshooting common record errors

The share count doubled but the basis did not change

That may be correct at the lot-total level. Check whether the broker is displaying total basis or basis per share. A doubled quantity with the same total basis should produce half the per-share basis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The broker created one large lot instead of preserving several lots

Request a lot-by-lot history and compare it with your pre-split records. Re-enter the lots in your personal ledger with their original dates and bases. Do not discard the original confirmations merely because the account now shows an aggregate position.

The broker’s per-share basis differs by a cent

Compare total basis and precision before treating a one-cent display difference as an error. Brokers commonly round displayed per-share amounts. If the lot total is also wrong, ask for the calculation detail.

A pre-split lot is missing

Check archived statements, transferred-account records, and dividend-reinvestment entries. Provide the broker with the issuer notice and your purchase evidence when requesting a correction. Keep a dated record of the request and response.

The event date in your ledger differs from the posting date

Corporate actions can post after their effective date. Record both: use the issuer’s effective date for the event and note the broker’s posting date for reconciliation. Do not treat the posting date as a new purchase date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You sold shares before noticing the split

Reconstruct the post-split lots before preparing the sale records. Determine which lots were sold, their adjusted basis, and whether the broker later issued a corrected Form 1099-B. If a filed return is affected, ask a qualified tax professional how to correct it.

A durable recordkeeping system

A spreadsheet, portfolio ledger, or tax software package can help maintain the calculations, but none replaces source documents or your review. The IRS notes that partner software can import brokerage and accounting transactions to help track adjusted basis. Treat an import as a starting point: verify split ratios, dates, lot quantities, and adjustments against statements and confirmations.

Use one row per tax lot and include columns for:

  • Security name and identifier as shown on the account statement.
  • Original acquisition date and quantity.
  • Original cost and every subsequent basis adjustment.
  • Split effective date and ratio.
  • Post-split quantity, total basis, and calculated per-share basis.
  • Broker-reported quantity and basis, plus any variance.
  • Document locations for confirmations, statements, and notices.

Back up the file and export a human-readable copy after each material corporate action. Keep records for as long as they may be needed to establish basis and the tax consequences of a sale under applicable record-retention rules.

Pre-sale checklist

  • Confirm that the event was an ordinary forward split of identical shares.
  • Verify the effective date and ratio from the issuer or broker notice.
  • List every pre-split lot separately.
  • Multiply each lot’s quantity by the split ratio.
  • Carry each lot’s adjusted total basis forward unchanged.
  • Divide each lot basis by its new quantity and retain full precision.
  • Confirm acquisition dates and holding-period information.
  • Reconcile your ledger with the broker’s post-event records.
  • Investigate missing lots, unexplained basis changes, or fractional-share cash.
  • Save confirmations, statements, notices, and any broker correspondence.

Sources and scope

The IRS guidance on stocks, options, splits, and traders supplies the ordinary-split calculation, tax treatment, covered-security context, and recordkeeping duty. Investor.gov’s explanation of brokerage statements describes the transaction and basis fields investors may see and cautions that not every adjustment is necessarily reflected. IRS Publication 550 (2025) covers basis adjustments, identifying shares sold, and the role of software imports. A broker’s cost-basis FAQ illustrates automated split adjustments in that broker’s own accounts; its procedures should not be assumed to apply to every brokerage.
