1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo make a 5K monitor comfortable in Windows, change Scale, not the monitor’s resolution. Open Settings > System > Display, select the 5K screen if more than one display is connected, and start with the percentage Windows marks Recommended. Increase or decrease that value until text and applications are readable at your normal viewing distance, while leaving Display resolution at its recommended value whenever possible. Scaling changes the apparent size of interface elements; resolution changes the pixel dimensions Windows uses and can reduce sharpness when lowered.
What scaling changes on a 5K monitor
A 5K panel packs many pixels into the same physical area as a lower-resolution monitor. That can make windows, menus, pointer targets and text appear physically smaller at the same desktop resolution. Windows display scaling enlarges those interface elements so they are easier to read while preserving the panel’s high-resolution output.

Resolution and scaling are separate controls. Display resolution determines the pixel dimensions Windows renders for the desktop. Scale changes the size at which text, icons, controls and supported app content are drawn. If your goal is simply to make text larger, adjust Scale first instead of selecting a lower resolution.

Change scaling in Windows 11
- Open Start, then choose Settings.
- Select System and open Display.
- If the computer shows more than one monitor, select the 5K monitor in the display diagram before changing anything. The selected screen is the one whose settings you will edit.
- Scroll to Scale & layout.
- Open the Scale menu and choose the value marked Recommended.
- Keep Display resolution at the value marked Recommended, unless you have a specific compatibility reason to use another resolution.
- Read several windows and use the applications you normally use. If text remains difficult to read, return to the Scale menu and try the next available value. If the desktop feels unnecessarily enlarged and you need more usable workspace, try a lower available value.
Judge the result at your usual seating position rather than by comparing percentages in isolation. A setting that looks right on a large 5K display viewed from farther away may feel wrong on a smaller panel used close to your desk.
Change scaling in Windows 10
Windows 10 uses older wording, but the controls are in the same location:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select the 5K monitor in the display diagram when multiple screens are attached.
- Under Scale and layout, find Change the size of text, apps, and other items.
- Choose the value Windows marks Recommended.
- Leave Display resolution on its recommended value when possible, then test your normal applications and adjust the scale if necessary.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The settings path described above applies to existing Windows 10 installations, but security and feature support are no longer current. On a supported Windows 11 system, use the Windows 11 labels shown in the previous section.

There is no universal “5K setting.” The correct value depends on the monitor’s physical size, how far you sit from it, your eyesight and whether you prioritize larger controls or more content on the desktop. Microsoft’s support instructions identify the value marked Recommended as the starting point, but they do not prescribe one percentage for every 5K panel.
Windows can expose several scale factors. Microsoft’s display design documentation lists these examples: 100%, 125%, 150%, 200%, 250%, 300%, 400% and 500%. The list describes available Windows factors, not a recommendation that any one of them fits every 5K monitor. Your computer may show only a subset, depending on its display configuration.
| Scale factor listed by Microsoft | What changing to it does | How to treat it on a 5K display |
|---|---|---|
| 100% | Uses the smallest nominal interface size in this list. | Consider it only if normal text and controls are already comfortable and you want maximum workspace. |
| 125% | Makes supported text and interface elements larger than at 100%. | Try it when 100% is readable but slightly small. |
| 150% | Increases the apparent size further. | Useful to test when you want a clearer reading size without moving to the largest factors. |
| 200% | Provides a substantially larger interface than 100%. | Evaluate on the actual 5K panel and at your normal distance; do not assume it is automatically correct. |
| 250%, 300%, 400% and 500% | Progressively enlarge supported interface content. | These are available factors documented by Microsoft, not default advice for a typical 5K setup. |
After each change, check the same representative tasks: reading a long document, opening a settings page, using your main browser, and operating the controls in the application that matters most to you. Choose the smallest value that remains comfortable if maximizing workspace is important, or a larger value if reducing visual strain is the priority. The percentage itself is not a quality score.
How physical size, distance and workspace affect the choice
Two people can use the same 5K resolution and reasonably choose different scale values. A large panel viewed across a deeper desk may need a different apparent size from a smaller panel viewed close up. Eyesight and the type of work matter as well: reading dense text and operating small controls place different demands on the interface than viewing several windows side by side.
Compare settings using the same routine rather than relying on a quick glance at the desktop. At one value, read a long article, inspect a settings page, use your main browser and operate the controls in your most important application. Repeat those tasks at the next available value. Note both comfort and usable workspace. Increasing Scale makes supported interface elements easier to read but leaves fewer logical items visible; decreasing it exposes more content but can make controls harder to target.

Do not treat the recommended percentage as a performance rating. It is Windows’ baseline for that display configuration. If it is comfortable and sharp, leave it alone. If it is not, changing Scale is an ordinary personalization step, not evidence that the monitor or graphics hardware is defective.
Keep resolution and scaling separate when troubleshooting
Changing resolution can appear to change text size, but it does so by changing the desktop’s pixel dimensions rather than by applying display scaling. That can introduce softness, borders or stretching. If only text and controls are too small, restore the resolution marked Recommended and adjust Scale instead.
Use the resolution menu to verify the selected display has not been switched to a non-native or non-recommended value. Then use the Scale menu independently. This two-control check prevents a common mistake: lowering resolution to compensate for small text and then losing the sharpness expected from a 5K panel.

What to check before changing anything
- Confirm the physical 5K monitor is the display selected in Settings.
- Record whether the problem affects the whole desktop or only one application.
- Check that Display resolution still shows the recommended value.
- Change only Scale for the first test, so you can tell which setting affected the result.
- Evaluate the same windows at your normal viewing distance.
If the picture is sharp in Settings and most applications but one program is not, changing resolution is unlikely to be the right first move. If every window is affected, verify the selected screen and both display controls before investigating anything more specific.
Set scaling correctly with multiple monitors
Windows supports arranging multiple displays and using extended or duplicated desktops. Each physical screen can have different characteristics, so always identify the target monitor before editing its scale.
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Use Identify, when necessary, to match the numbered display in Settings with the physical monitor.
- Click the 5K monitor in the display diagram.
- Change Scale for that selected display and confirm its Display resolution remains recommended.
- Select another monitor in the diagram only when you intend to configure that monitor’s settings.
Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions cover arranging screens and choosing extend or duplicate modes. Those layout choices are independent of the percentage you assign to the 5K display, but selecting the wrong screen can make it seem as if Windows ignored your change.
In a duplicated desktop, the screens still have separate physical characteristics even though they show the same desktop content. Check which display is selected before changing Scale, and reselect the 5K panel whenever you return to Display settings. In an extended desktop, you can test the same application on each screen to see whether its size or clarity changes when it crosses monitors.
Why an app may look blurry after scaling
If the Windows desktop is crisp but one application becomes blurry, changes size unexpectedly or looks wrong after you drag it between monitors, do not immediately lower the monitor’s resolution. The issue may be the application’s handling of DPI changes.

Microsoft explains in its High DPI desktop application documentation that legacy desktop programs can appear blurry or incorrectly sized when they do not respond correctly to DPI changes. A modern, DPI-aware program can usually redraw itself for the new monitor; an older program may not.
Separate a Windows setting problem from an app problem
- Check whether the entire desktop, including Settings and other applications, is blurry. If everything is affected, verify that the 5K monitor is selected and that its resolution is still marked recommended.
- Open a second application on the same monitor. If it is sharp while one program is not, the problem is likely specific to that program’s DPI behavior.
- Move the affected program between monitors and observe whether the blur appears only after the move. That pattern is consistent with an application that does not handle a DPI transition correctly.
- Return the program to the monitor where it is clear, or use a version of the application that properly supports modern Windows DPI behavior when one is available.
The exact compatibility controls exposed for an individual program vary by Windows release and application. The important diagnostic order is to confirm the selected monitor, scale and resolution first, then treat a single-program blur as an application-compatibility issue instead of degrading the whole display.
Signs that DPI compatibility, not scaling, is the issue
- Settings and other current applications remain crisp.
- Only one older desktop application is blurry or incorrectly sized.
- The problem starts when the window moves from one monitor to another.
- Returning the window to its original monitor restores its previous appearance.
These signs do not prove a particular program’s implementation, but they help separate a per-application problem from a display-wide setting. Keep the 5K monitor at its recommended resolution while you test; otherwise a resolution change can obscure the original cause.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA practical calibration routine for readability
Use this short routine whenever you connect a 5K monitor, change desks or add another screen:
- Identify the screen. In Display settings, select the physical 5K panel you intend to configure.
- Verify output quality. Confirm its resolution is the value Windows marks recommended.
- Apply the baseline. Choose the recommended scale value.
- Test real work. Read body text, use menus, inspect notification areas and operate your most important applications.
- Change one variable. If readability is poor, alter Scale while leaving resolution unchanged.
- Recheck after moving windows. Test applications on every monitor you use, because a program may react differently when crossing displays.
This method makes the trade-off visible: larger scaling improves legibility but leaves fewer logical items on screen; smaller scaling provides more workspace but can make controls harder to read. The best choice is the one that supports your work without forcing you to squint or repeatedly zoom individual documents.
Allow enough time to use each candidate value for ordinary work. Check text in a browser, a long document, the Windows Settings interface and the application you use most. A setting that looks acceptable on an empty desktop may feel cramped when toolbars, notifications and several windows are present. Conversely, a setting that seems large at first may be preferable if it eliminates repeated zooming.

Symptom: A percentage copied from another setup feels uncomfortable. Fix: Start with your own Recommended value and evaluate size, viewing distance, eyesight and workspace needs.
Blaming Windows for one blurry legacy program
Symptom: Settings and most applications are sharp, but one desktop program is blurry or changes size between monitors. Fix: Check that program’s DPI compatibility rather than reducing the entire monitor’s resolution.
Confusing Windows 10 and Windows 11 labels
Symptom: Instructions mention a control you cannot find. Fix: On Windows 11, look for Scale under Scale & layout. On Windows 10, look for Change the size of text, apps, and other items under Scale and layout.
Changing scale and resolution at the same time
Symptom: You cannot tell why the picture became soft or why the workspace changed. Fix: Return resolution to its recommended value, then test Scale by itself. Keeping one variable unchanged makes the result easier to judge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to leave the recommended settings alone
If the recommended scale makes text comfortable and the recommended resolution is sharp, there is no technical requirement to change either setting simply because the monitor is 5K. Scaling is a comfort and workspace decision, not a benchmark. Keep the baseline when it already suits your eyesight, distance and applications.
Change Scale when the whole interface is consistently too small or too large. Investigate application DPI compatibility when only one legacy desktop program misbehaves. Change resolution only for a deliberate display-compatibility reason, understanding that Microsoft warns a lower-than-recommended value may reduce sharpness or alter the way the image is fitted to the panel.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change display scaling in Windows?
Open Start > Settings > System > Display, select the correct monitor, and choose a value under Scale & layout in Windows 11. In Windows 10, use Scale and layout and the control labeled Change the size of text, apps, and other items. Start with the value marked Recommended.
What scaling should I use on a 5K monitor?
There is no single correct percentage. Begin with Windows’ Recommended value, then compare nearby available values using your normal applications and viewing distance. Choose the smallest comfortable value for more workspace or a larger value when legibility is more important.
Best Value
Why is text so small on my 5K screen?
A 5K panel has many pixels in a given physical area, so unscaled interface elements can look smaller. Increase Scale while keeping Display resolution at its recommended value. Lowering resolution is not the normal fix because it can reduce sharpness or produce borders or stretching.
Should I use 100%, 125%, 150% or 200%?
Those are examples of Windows scale factors, not universal prescriptions. Your system may show a different subset, and the suitable choice depends on panel size, viewing distance, eyesight and desired workspace. Test the values that Windows offers on your actual display.
Why do apps look blurry when I move them to another monitor?
Some legacy desktop applications do not respond correctly to DPI changes. If Settings and other applications stay sharp while one program becomes blurry or incorrectly sized after moving between monitors, treat it as an application-compatibility issue. Confirm the selected monitor, Scale and recommended resolution before changing the whole display.
Do I need to buy a cable, dock or calibration tool to change scaling?
No. Windows display scaling is a built-in setting. The procedure requires the Display settings controls; changing the cable, dock or monitor is not part of the normal scaling adjustment.

Why do apps look blurry when I move them to another monitor?
A legacy desktop application may not handle DPI changes correctly. If other apps remain sharp, check the application’s DPI compatibility rather than lowering the monitor’s resolution.
Do I need new hardware to change Windows scaling?
No. Scaling is a built-in Windows Display setting; a new cable, dock, monitor or calibration tool is not required for this task.
The Bottom Line
Select the 5K monitor in Settings > System > Display, start with Windows’ Recommended scale, and keep its recommended resolution. Adjust Scale—not resolution—until text and controls are comfortable. If only one program is blurry when moved between monitors, investigate that application’s DPI support instead of sacrificing the sharpness of the entire display.
