Check the exact game title on its main menu before following steps. In Gears 5, open Options, go to Accessibility, and look for the violence/gore and mature-content controls. The official guide confirms these features, but does not establish a button-by-button route or identical labels on every platform.
How do I turn off gore in Gears of War?
For Gears 5, open the game’s options and look in the Accessibility section for the gore or violence control. The official Gears 5 accessibility guide says turning off gore effects removes some blood and gore effects shown during gameplay. It does not promise to remove every mature element.

How do I turn off swearing?
Campaign story
In Gears 5, find the mature-content option in Accessibility settings. The official guide says turning it off disables swearing in the campaign story. This setting concerns campaign dialogue, not received text messages.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
Received text chat
Gears 5 has a separate profanity filter for strong or mature language in received text chat. Use that filter if the concern is language in incoming chat; it is not a campaign-dialogue mute.
Where are the mature content settings?
In Gears 5, start in the game’s Options menu and open Accessibility. Look there for the gore/violence control, campaign mature-content option, and separate text-chat profanity filter. The official documentation confirms those features but does not establish that every Gears title has the same options or route.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
First verify the edition named on the game’s main menu. A support result for the broader Gears of War series has ambiguous edition scope, so it is not evidence of a shared menu path for all releases. In particular, the available official sources do not confirm the same controls for Gears of War: Reloaded or every other entry.

Do these settings change the game’s age rating?
No. These are selective in-game filters; they do not change the rating or guarantee removal of all mature content. ESRB lists Mature 17+; Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Strong Language for each of the following editions:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I block Gears of War for my child?
On Xbox, rating-based parent controls can limit which games a child can play. ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guide describes managing those restrictions, including through the Xbox Family Settings app. These platform controls govern access by rating; they do not turn off gore or filter campaign dialogue within a game.

In-game filters and parental controls: what each does
| Approach | Scope | What it changes | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-game filters | Selected effects or language within a supported game | Reduces specific content; does not change the age rating or necessarily remove all mature elements | The individual title and only the controls it provides |
| Platform parental controls | Game access by rating | Restricts which games a child account can play; does not alter a game’s content | Xbox account restrictions, rather than one game’s dialogue or effects |
